100 Grovers A v e n u e is a late e x a m p l e ot the towered Q u e e n A n n e style. Rising 2-stories from a
rubblestone basement to a gable roof.this house retains its original w o o d shingle sheathing.This
house stands with gable e n d to the street. T h e main facade features a full length fron porch which is
two thirds enclosed with the main entrance opening o n to t h e o p e n third . T h e o p e n portion exhibits
Colonial Revival T u s c a n c o l u m n s . O n either side of the main f a c a d e are t o w e r e d projections. A
2-story cylindrical tower with copper finial t o p p e d , slate shingle c o v e r e d candle snufter tower is
located at the south east corner.The north east corner features an octagonal glass panel a n d
metal?ribbed solarium or conservatory which rests atop t h e porch. In general.windows are formally
enframed with well rendered moldings and in s o m e c a s e s cornice h e a d e d lintels. Gable roofed wall
d o r m e r s rise a b o v e t h e side walls.In general.windows contain 1/1 a n d 6/1 w o o d sash.

100 Grovers A v e n u e w a s built in 1909. Its lot w a s part of the City of Boston lands from 1869-1883.lt
w a s part of the Winthrop Shore Land C o m p a n y ' s Parcel N during the 1890's. In 1906,this still-vacant
lot w a s o w n e d by Harriet E. Hartshorn. Evidently its first owner w a s M a u d e M.S. M c G a r y Tibbetts a n d
G e o r g e W. Tibbetts. His occupation is listed a s "secretary, E x c h a n g e Trust Company, Boston".They
lived here until the early 1940's. By 1947, Gertrude J . a n d R a y m o n d Sullivan,salesman lived here.
Grovers A v e n u e w a s set out by the engineering firm of W h i t m a n and Breck c. 1883-84. It w a s n a m e d
for a son - in -law of 17th century Winthrop's D e a n e Winthrop.
