More women die from heart disease and stroke then cancer. However, most women fail to recognize cardiovascular disease as their major health problem and thus fail to seek medical attention when faced with symptoms and overall fail to partner with their physicians to take a proactive approach in adopting a heart healthy lifestyle. It is also well known that cardiovascular disease and risk factors are underrecognized in women thus leading to undertreatment. Cardiovascular disease presents in women differently and may not have the same risk factors as men. Emerging research shows that pregnancy complications are a unique risk factor for women. In recent times healthcare providers, policy makers and the public advocacy groups are making efforts to improve awareness, knowledge and understanding of the gender differences present in cardiovascular disease. Recognition of these differences requires communication of this information to healthcare providers to inform and guide clinical care. The 2015 Women’s Cardiovascular Symposium is intended to promote practitioner knowledge, competence and performance in this under-recognized field. Leading national and international experts will present major topics in cardiovascular health with a focus on gender differences. This one-day program is geared towards practicing clinicians across multiple disciplines including: primary care physicians, gynecologists, cardiologists, advanced practice nurses and other health care practitioners who care for female patients. The program will provide you with the most up to date practical and efficient strategies for improving your care for female patients, as well as an opportunity to speak with a leading experts in women’s cardiovascular health. cular Health Symposium Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to: •Identify the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease in women •Discuss coronary microvascular dysfunction and its role the atypical manifestation of heart disease in women •Develop a plan of care for managing cardiovascular disease in the pregnant patient •Apply emerging management strategies that recognize how stroke and gender differences effect care outcomes •Recognize the gender differences in treatment and outcomes in heart failure •Review clinical characteristics, imaging and treatment options for the female patient with valve disease with a focus on tricuspid valve disease from carcinoid •Recognize the epidemic of pre-eclampsia and gestational hypertensive disorders and its long term impact on a woman’s cardiovascular health •Share best practices in prevention, lifestyle and behavior modification to improve the adoption of a heart healthy lifestyle for both chronic and acute injuries Target Audience Cardiologists, primary care physicians, cardiothoracic surgeons, obstetricians, gynecologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, physicians assistants, residents and fellows.
