A family from Stokke in Vestfold
A family from Stokke in Vestfold Anne Marie Hansdatter and Anders Hansen On these pages we give the story of Anne Marie Hansdatter (1849 – 1920) and Anders Hansen (1841 – 1880). Attempts are made to find both ancestors and descendents. Anne Marie and Anders, as well as their ancestors lived in Stokke, between Tønsberg and Sandefjord. They are connected to farms like Skarpeborge, Tufte, Korsane, Husum and others (see map on next page). The descendents however, are found both in Norway and in USA – mainly on the west coast around Seattle. Anne Marie Hansdatter We have no picture of Anders Anne Marie (daughter of Hans Larsen Tufte and Berthe Marie Johnsdatter) was born 22. February 1849. She married Anders Hansen (son of Hans Christian Andersen and Inger Marie Nielsdatter). He was born 16. December 1841 and died 22. August 1880. As a widow Anne Marie married again with the 14 year younger Halvor Hansen (1863 – 1940). Anne Marie had all together 6 children; Olga Marie, Hans Hartvig, Klarius Adolf, Jenny Matilde, Haldis and Harald. The latter two are from her second marriage – and will not be mentioned more. We have introduced a coding system in order to help you with generations and family relationship. The coding system All descendents of Anne Marie and Anders Hansen is given the letter S (implying the Stokke connection). The first generation, that is the children, is given by S and one number. Thus S 1 is the oldest child Olga Marie, S 2 is Hans Hartvig – and so on. The grandchildren (2nd generation) are given by S and two numbers – divided by a dot. The greatgrandchildren (3rd generation) by S and three numbers divided by two dots – and so on. All descendents are coded with S and numbers. You can easily see the family relations between the individuals and the generations. We have now 5 generations after Anne Marie and Anders. They are coded by S and 5 numbers – divided by 4 dots. The author of these pages, Thormod Henriksen, is married into this family. I have attained information from Finn Setlo – one of the great-grandchildren to Anne Marie and Anders. He has in turn had important help from his friend Osvald Rydjord. I am also thankful for all information from my wife Målfrid Maukon Henriksen (also one of the great-grandchildren). I would also thank Oddvar Ruud for some recent information on the family of S 3 Klarius Adolf. Furthermore, I have used the “Stokke” book as well as the church books – as well as the census from 1801, 1865 and 1900. Målfrid Henriksen Finn Setlo 1 Stokke and places in Vestfold In order to give some information about places and farms in Stokke, we include a road map of the area. We have marked with red dots the farms Husum and Tufte and have made a red ring around Skarpeborge. Skarpeborge Tufte Skarpeborge, Sagrønningen and other places where we find some of the family members is west of E18. Thus, Anne Marie Hansdatter lived in Sagrønningen the last part of her life. Furthermore, we believe that her daughter Jenny Mathilde and Aino Onni Maukon lived in a house in this area. Husum Five of the great-grandchildren to Anne Marie Hansdatter and Anders Hansen gathered in front of Sagrønningen in June 2006. From left Reidar Leifson, Finn Setlo, Karen Hosking, Målfrid Henriksen and Gudrun (Rose) Holtet. 2 The ancesters As far as we know, the ancestors to Anne Marie Hansdatter and Anders Hansen all lived in Stokke. The information we have is the following: Anne Marie Hansdatter: Annes father was Hans Larsen Tufte. He is presumably from Tufte in Stokke. Anne Maries mother is Berthe Marie Johnsdatter. They married in 1841. At present we have no information about brothers and sisters to Anne Marie. Anne Marie had all together 6 children – and we shall mention the descendents to four of them. Hans Larsen Tufte 18? Presumably from Tufte – born on Skjersnes. + 1841 Berthe Marie Johansdatter 1820 Anne Marie (Hansdatter) Hansen (1849 – 1920) To the right is a picture from 1911. Here you can see Anne Marie (with the cat) on a visit to Jenny Mathilde and Aino Onni Maukonen. The people on the picture is from left; unknown woman, Arthur Maukon (11 years), Olga (the oldest of Anne Maries children) with John Maukon (1 year old), Rut (Maukon) Gabrielsen (5 years), Jenny Mathilde, Anne Marie, Aino Onni Maukon (son in law) and Andreas Maukon (3 years old). The picture above is from 1911 and the picture to the left is from 2006. We believe it is the same house – which can be found quite near the farm Skarpe-borge in Stokke. The windows as well as the framing of the windows are the same (see below the windows). The 1911-picture is from the other side of the house. 3 Ancestors to Anders Hansen (1841 – 1880). We have a lot more information about the ancestors to Anders Hansen. We can make a family tree that goes 6 generations backwards. As you will see we have up until today 5 generations after Anders – which implies that from 1650 we have 11 generations. The family tree we can give is the following (start with Anders at the bottom); Jens Olssøn was the son of Ola Hanssøn Øde-Brøholt. He leased the farm Husum in 1690. The farm was given to his son and Jens moved back to Øde-Brøholt where he died in 1741, 90 years old. Peder Toressøn Jens Olssøn Hans Jenssøn From Sandar No further information Olene Pederdatter Anders Perderssøn (1731 – ?) Born on Stubberød, Stokke No further information Hans Christian Andersen 1814 – ? Hans married 3 times. The first one is the mother of Anders + Anders Hansen (1841 – 1880) 4 Inger Marie Nielsdatter From Korsane Anders was twin with Niels The descendents For all the descendents of Anne Marie and Anders we use the coding system starting with S to denote the Stokke family. Anne Marie had 4 children with Anders and 2 with Halvor. All descendents are given the letter S (implying the Stokke family) and numbers. S 1 Olga Marie (Fagerstad) (1871 – 1960) S 2 Hans Hartvig Andersen (1873 – 1942) S 3 Klarius Adolf Hansen (1878 – 1936) S 4 Jenny Mathilde (Maukon) (1880 – 1912) S 5 Haldis Amanda Halvorsdatter (1888 – ?) S 6 Harald Hjalmar Halvorsen (1894 – ?) The oldest one Olga is denoted S 1, the second Hans Hartvig has the coding S 2 and so on. The great-grandchildren (those met in Stokke – and all others) are given by S and three numbers with two dots in between. The coding follows each person and makes it rather easy to see the family relation between the people and the generations. See the example below. Here are five great-grandchildren gathered outside Skjee church on June 8. 2006. From left; Finn Setlo (S 2.3.2), Reidar Leifson (S 1.4.1), Karen Hosking (S 2.5.1) Målfrid Henriksen (S 4.3.1) and Gudrun Karoline (Rose) Holtet (S 2.3.1). All 5 have S and 3 numbers and are therefore second cousins. Finn, Karen and Rose have S 2 in common and has a closer relationship – being cousins. Finally Finn and Rose have S 2.3 in common – they are brother and sister. 5 S 1 Olga Marie S 1 Olga Marie (Fagerstad) (4/3 1871 – 1960). Olga was born in Stokke and she married Mathias Hanssen (1867 – ?). He was a farmer and steward in whaling – and worked at a “Torvstrøfabrikk”. They changed the name from Hanssen to Fagerstad. They had together 7 children. However, the oldest one died only 14 years old. S 1 Olga S 1.1. Then follows Karen (daughter of Karoline Sofie) and finally Karoline Sofie. 9 Hans Hartvig Andersens unusual life story We mentioned that Hans Hartvig Andersen was a seaman. When he was 35 years old he was steward on S/S Tellus that was wrecked outside the west coast of America – and the family back home assumed he died since they never heard or saw him again. However, the crew on the boat all survived and Hans Hartvig met the two year older Helga Sofie Hansen (1871 – 1931). She was a Norwegian girl from Holtereie, Nes on Øvre Romerike. Helga Sofie got pregnant and she and Hans Hartvig married in Vancouver in October 1908. They lived most of the time in Seattle and got 3 children together. Helga Sofie died in 1931 and Hans Hartvig died in 1942. They are both buried at Washelli Cemetery in Seattle (see the picture below). Karoline Sofie survived them both (died in 1945), and is buried in Sandefjord. The newspaper from 1907 Astoria Daily Budget WRECKED OFF GRAYS HARBOR Steamship Tellus With Cargo of Coal for Portland ‘ Hoquiam, Wash., Sept. 23--The Norwegian steamer Tellus, coal-laden from Nanaimo for Portland, which went ashore on the North Spit, at the entrance to Grays Harbor Saturday forenoon, broke in two at 7 o’clock Sunday morning and with her cargo will be a total loss. The steamer is now fast going to pieces. The stranded vessel rested easily up to midnight, when in a heavy swell, she began pounding terrifically. Shortly afterwards she began leaking, her pumps broke, and the engines shifted over a foot. At 6 o’clock Sunday morning, water was pouring into the engine room and seven feet of water was in the hold. At seven o’clock with a report like a cannon the steel steamer broke in two at number two hatch. Three mates, three engineers, and the steward, who remained on the wreck, were taken off by the tug Cudahy, which stood by during the night. The tug Traveler, with Second Mate Nelson of the Tellus, is standing by the wreck. Captain Berg believes the Tellus will go to pieces entirely within a few days. The Tellus carried nearly 4000 tons of coal, valued at $20,000, for the Independent Coal and Ice Company, of Portland. She is breaking up rapidly and apparently will not last long. Tellus was owned by W. Wilhelmsen. I have made efforts to find the names of the crew – but after so long time all these details were gone. Therefore, we assume Hans Hartvig was the above mentioned steward. 10 The American family S 2.5 Eugene Andersen (1909 – 1991) S 2.6 Dorothy Andersen (1910 – 1990) S 2.7 Margaret Andersen (1915 – 2000) It is of interest to note that the Norwegian children used the family name Hansen (usually meaning the son of Hans), whereas the American children used the name Andersen. Here is a picture from about 1917 showing Hans Hartvig and his American family. From left S 2.5 Eugene, Hans Hartvig with S 2.7 Margaret, Helga Sofie and S 2.6 Dorothy. Jenny Mathilde was the youngest of the four children after Anne Marie Hansdatter and Anders Hansen. She had a rather short life since she died only 31 years old. She married Aino Onni Maukonen from Finland – and they had together 4 children, 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. We have recently discovered the large Maukonen family in Finland with a branch to USA. Those interested in Aino Onni Maukon and his family can find information on the web adress: www.maukon.com An English version is found by downloading the document “Maukon family in Norway”. Here we shall give Jenny Mathilde`s descendents in Norway. Aino Onni was a sea captain and spent a lot of time away from the home in Stokke. Due to this, Jenny Mathilde and their first child, Arthur Otmar lived together with Anne Marie and Halvor (her second husband) for some years. They then bought a small farm at Skarpeborge (see page 3) where they lived – at least until Jenny Mathilde died in 1912. Jenny Mathilde and Aino Onni Maukon had 4 children: S 4.1.
