President’s Message
T
his FOCUS issue is devoted to the 2011 National. We
want to thank again, the Working Dobermanns of the
Carolinas for hosting this wonderful event. Special thanks
go to Chris Rasmussen, Lindsay Davis and Jason Dohse.
In addition to the usual national events, the WDC also
hosted a ZTP whose results are recognized by the DV.
Congratulations go to Debbie Hartzel and her dog, Cruisey
for taking home the “Best ZTP” award.
The UDC IPO Classic, held in conjunction with the DPCA
national in Fitchburg, MA is now history. We were delighted by the turn out. We appreciate the financial support of
the DPCA for our working trial as this will guarantee that
UDC is less likely to suffer a financial loss. We now need to
turn our attention to the next IPO Classic to be held in Ft.
Mitchell, KY. We have many working teams in the Midwest
and we expect a good turnout there.
The BOD recently passed a revision of the litter registration program. I am working on designing the forms and
these will be available within the next few months. A regular litter registration will be available to all UDC members,
having signed our COE. A litter registration will cost only
$15 and the certificates issued will be accompanied by a
packet containing the UDC brochure (thank you Linda Lindic) UDC membership and registration applications. Dogs
with an UDC litter registration will be able to obtain a
scorebook and upgrade to a regular UDC dog registration

for a discounted price of $25. In addition, the implementation of the Bred for Working litter registration will also
take place. To be eligible for this registration (with colored
papers in the European working dog tradition), the sire
and dam must have a breed survey earned by an approved
registry or a working title. At least one parent must have
the health testing currently required by the UDC breed
survey. This program is meant to serve two purposes. One
is to honor those breeders who have gone the extra step to
produce the total Doberman, a fundamental UDC goal.
Finally, there has been substantial progress in preventing
and treating DCM. We have a genetic test for at least one
causative mutation. Dr. Richard Vulliet, D.V.M., a Professor in the Department of Veterinary Molecular Biosciences
at the University of California, Davis, has been using stem
cell therapy to treat Doberman Pinschers with dilated
cardiomyopathy (DCM). In early results, his research team
has found that allogenic bone marrow stromal cells (MSCs)
appear to provide an effective treatment for DCM. Treated
dogs demonstrated improvement in activity, attitude and/or
cardiac parameters.

Memorial — Cota 2001-2011
A
fter over ten months of fighting osteosarcoma, Cota let
us know it was time to set him free to run with all his
old friends.
Cota came to us after spending the first year of his life
mostly in a crate. I always said he was learning delayed
because it took him longer to learn new tasks, but once
he learned them he never forgot them. I’ll never forget
how, during his early training, if the victim was quite a
ways from where I was, he’d come running back, give me
his indication then stand there looking at me as if to say
‘why did I do that?’ We worked really hard on helping him
remember where he’d left the ‘’victim’. But he excelled
at boat work - one task we didn’t have to teach him. He
seemed to instinctively understand what was needed when
he was working on a boat.
Scared of puppies and not especially interested in meeting
other dogs up close and personal, Cota loved people. On
the scene of a missing person he would make the rounds
and stand stoically while relatives and friends of the missing
person would pet and hug him. He always seemed to just
know who needed a fur-fix the most. At demos he would
disappear behind a wall of children. Becoming Delta Society Pet Partner, he had a great time having children read to
him, again seeming to know which struggling child needed
him to flip their book and lighten the mood.
Cota was the 2010 United Doberman Club Service Dog
of the Year and was also awarded the Doberman Pinscher
Club of America’s Medal of Loyalty for ‘Accomplishment
by a Rescue’. I was always so proud of the fact that he was
such a great ambassador for the Doberman breed.
Losing Cota has left a hole in my life. He was a tireless
worker, a great friend and a great protector - so long as
he could do it from behind me! He taught me much, but
mostly he was my partner - a dog I trusted in every aspect
of his life. A dog I loved.
Run strong and free Cota. We’ll meet again some day.

UDC & UKC Ch Cara’s Hot Mamma “Schotzie” BH, TR-1, WAC,
ATTS-TT, CGC, Versatility Companion Excellent (VCX)
T
his quarter our Versatility Spotlight shines on UDC &
UKC Ch Cara’s Hot Mamma, BH, TR-1, WAC, ATTTT, CGC, and proud owners Linda and Pete Lindic.
Schotzie qualified for her VCX title by earning her UDC
Championship at the 2011 UDC Nationals hosted by the
Working Dobermanns of the Carolinas; a UDC Member Club
Linda writes “It has an awesome Nationals made even better by having Schotzie acquire her third Challenge Certificate and thereby earning her UDC Championship. Schotzie now joins her house-mate Jack in earning a VCX title.
We got Schotzie at 16 months of age from Ray Carlisle at
Cara Dobermans and we were so pleased to have this little
girl join our family. She is such a joy to own and work with.
In September we took her to the 9/11 Recognition Event
in Jersey City, New Jersey where along with husband Pete
she was a flag-bearer honoring the processional of the
Search & Rescue Dobermans who served during the World
Trade Center Disaster.
Schotzie is training at the Northeast Ohio Schutzhund Association in Diamond, OH. and is working on her Schutzhund

to training and working with her in the years to come.”
Congratulations to Schotzie and Pete and Linda for earning the UDC Versatility Companion Excellent (VCX) title
by demonstrating conformance to the breed standard,
genetic soundness, stable temperament, trainability, and
working drives appropriate to the Total Doberman!

My Trip to the 2011 United Doberman Club National

I
live in northern Ohio and the winter of 2010 - 2011
seemed to me to be a particularly unpleasant one. Cold
temperatures, snow on the ground most of the winter and
to make it worse, it seemed like spring would never arrive.
I was so looking forward to going to the 2011 Nationals
hosted by the Working Dobermanns of the Carolinas –
going south meant warmer weather. I was ready! As we
headed south down I-77, I could see spring arriving – it was
like watching time lapse photography. By the time we arrived at the host hotel – the Radisson at Research Triangle
Park – it was as though summer had arrived.
The hotel was located well off the road in a very large parklike setting with lots of trees and green area for the dogs.
The hotel was fabulous; I could hardly believe the luxurious
accommodations. The rooms were large and bright with
thick puffy comforters. The rooms all had “sleep-number”
beds which use a hand-held control to adjust the firmness
of the mattress – and as Nancy Christensen commented
they were fun to play with. The lay-out of the hotel was very
convenient; the rooms were laid out in long corridors like
spokes on a wheel with parking on each side of the corridor.

You could park your car right outside your window where
you could keep an eye on your dog. All the events with the
exception of the IPO events were set up right outside our
rooms – so convenient. You just walked out the door and
entered your event. Nice for us and nice for our dogs.
When we arrived on Tuesday, they were in the process of
taking the dogs through the Temperament Testing and you
could hear them barking at the “bad guy”. We caught up
with Sharon Marinelli who was giving conformation classes
for us novice handlers. There really is an art to putting your
best foot forward when you present your dog in the ring.
That evening we went to the “Meet & Greet Mixer” in the
hotel lounge. It was great to meet up with old friends that
we had not seen since the last UDC Nationals and talk
“dog talk”. Chris Rasmussen had a great assortment of
yummy hot and cold hors d’oeuvres for us to enjoy. That
finished up our day of arrival.
We woke up on Wednesday to a lovely sunny day and
Conformation Show #1 with Judge Judy Smith. It was fun
to watch the dogs strut their stuff in the conformation ring.
There were a lot of young up-and coming dogs to watch.
The Judge was very complimentary on the structure and
condition of our dogs. The club had purchased awesome
trophies and medallions from Germany – they were beautiful to behold. After the show was over, we want back to
the room to freshen up for the Banquet, Silent Auction and
Annual General Meeting.
The number and quality of the Silent Auction items was
amazing. My only regret was that I had a limited budget!
Jim Toman, Trophy Chair had a trailer filled with items
for the auction. There were high end pieces of Doberman
art worth several hundred dollars. There were also a lot of
antique and vintage Doberman items. These one-of-a-kind
items were donated by Karen Moore, co-author of “The
History of the Doberman Pinscher as depicted through collectibles, art and literature”. There were placards with each
item providing background information. They were truly
unique. If you appreciate these types of items like I do, take

After we placed our bids, we were seated for dinner. The
hotel provided a delicious buffet dinner with several choices
of entrees and side dishes – it had something for everyone.
They had an awesome “to die for” desert table with tortes,
mousses, cakes, pies, and tarts. After dinner we had the
Annual General Meeting. At the conclusion of the meeting,
the winners of the silent auction items were announced.
I actually won a tug for my dog because I had the reddest
sunburn at the banquet. That particular tug has turned out
to be my Schotzie’s favorite tug.
The next morning we were up bright and early to get
ready for the second conformation show with Judge Fred
Schmidtke. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had something
to say about that. There were Tornado Warnings issued
for the area. Chris Rasmussen, President of the Working
Dobermanns of the Carolinas made a decision to postpone

Baby Class – Age 3 to 6 months. Rebholzer Iron Butterfly
a.k.a. “Doozie” won Best Baby. She was adorable! It was so
much fun watching breeder/owner Traci Mulligan stack her
and take her around the ring. Doozie was a crowd favorite.
That evening we drove out to the Raleigh Schutzhund Club
training field to watch the dogs practice for the upcoming
IPO Trial on Friday and Saturday. This was the first time
we used our car since arriving. They had a real Southern
BBQ buffet with pulled pork, beans, corn, and a food item
I did not recognize – I asked what it was and was told it was
a hush-puppy! Again, there were more silent auction items
to bid on and a raffle for an I-Pad. It was a fun, relaxing
evening, and we enjoyed the outdoor location.

the show until the weather alert had cleared. Fortunately,
the rain stopped and out popped the sun, and as they say
the “show went on” and so did the wind, we finally gave
up trying to keep the ring upright and just let it stay on the
ground rather than risk it flopping over on a dog. Judge,
Fred Schmidtke was very big on movement and our dogs
and their handlers made their laps around the show ring.
This was the first show where we had an entry in the new

On Friday we packed up our bags and loaded our car for our
trip back home. However, on the way out, we drove to the
Raleigh Schutzhund Field to watch the competitors compete
for the BH. You could just feel the tension in the air as the
competitors and their dogs got ready to compete. I seriously
think that some held their breath during the entire routine!
We congratulated the BH competitors, said our good-byes,
and headed back up north. As we neared home, the weather got remarkably cooler and the foliage got sparser and it
was several weeks before I got to enjoy warm weather again.
At least I had my sunburn to keep me warm!
My thanks go out to The Working Dobermanns of the
Carolinas for putting on a top-notch UDC National with a
beautiful venue, great food and awesome trophies.

F
irst of all I’d like to thank your Club for inviting me to
judge this wonderful assignment.
It’s quite an honor and it was an “educational” event for me as
I proceeded down the road in judging our wonderful breed.
I’ll refer to the dogs and bitches in some generalities and
then be more specific about a couple of issues that came to
mind when I finally could get to the catalog and look up a
few sires and dams and look at the working titles. I commend this Club on the performance venue that the dogs
compete in as this breed has a good mind and can do the
work they were developed for. If you ever got to see the
CD prepared for the Doberman
National in honor of the Centennial, these animals, even
minimally trained, were truly devoted to the handler when
they worked in the Pacific area during the war. The breed
made a lasting impact on our soldiers and their lives . . . .
I was most anxious to get started in the morning and found
the ring to be limiting in a way in which to move the animals down and back and then around for the side gait. So
I decided not to grade them on the initial downhill part of
the go around, but wait for a side look and a more upward
gait which made the better made dogs dig in and drive and
open up their rear hocks. I was impressed even with the
male puppies that the first eye contact they made with me,
I knew most of them would stand their ground. I found
wonderful round bone, beautiful dark rust markings and for
the most part short backed dogs. I loved most of the male
heads as they were “very” male with lots of fill under eyes
to complete that beautiful wedge you hold in your hands to
examine the mouths. I found my bitch heads to be lacking in comparison to the males. I like that I saw on some
plenty of underjaw, thus giving me “big strong white teeth.”
Wonderful almond eyes and some very dark and alluring.
Neck placements on some were a problem but that comes
with a forward set of the front assembly. I still found nice
shapes to necks and none of this stovepipe stuff which I’m
beginning to see more of. I found good straight legs holding up that front fulcrum which is the balance of the fronts
when laid back properly thus allowing the dogs to run with
heads forward not cranked up like Poodles!
Short backs, short loins and enough depth to elbows – not
too deep so that elbows bang on bone instead of cartilage
thus allowing tight fitting elbows. Enough tuck up but not
so much as to be herring gutted and good strong croups
to hold the pelvic bones in place and allow good tail sets.
Rears were proportionately good with enough “matching”
angulations to allow for opening of the hock when moving
without “sparking” (too close in rear to touch and cross). I
liked some of the width of the lower thigh allowing room
for good muscle/ligament placement. Feet for the most
part were very nice with that very slight slope in front pas-

terns allowing these to be the shock absorbers when moving instead of being so upright they bang into the ground
causing undo pounding on those shoulders blades and
upper arms. I was particularly concerned about the bitches
and the depth of quality. I worry as they need to be strong
for their maternal duties down the road. On this day I saw
more quality in the males and my WD was an exceptional
standard dog –- one I’d breed a bitch to in a minute. Then
referring to catalog, saw a dog I’m familiar with. A dog
who was quite a large dog, but beautifully put together and
now I’ve seen puppies bearing the bone and regal air this
dog possessed. I believe the stallion presence of this dog
is due to the strong mind the dog possesses. It has come
through on some of the puppies I judged. My breed class I
thought was going to be easy but when I got down to it, I
gave it considerable thought. My BOB bitch was absolutely
my cup of tea. She’s in one piece, standard, good bone,

Baby Class: Bitch
1. Rebholzer Iron Butterfly: VG (2 months old):
square, nice topline, not overdone, nice under
jaw, good bite, good back skull, tight elbows,
good pastern, good feet, balanced forequarters, lower croup, movement good for age.
Puppy Dogs:
1. Mako Mehetabel’s Righteous Aggression:
(VG) Best Opposite Sex Puppy: Very nice outline, square, good bone, smooth. Nice neckset,
heavy backskull, good underjaw, good topline,
good bone and pasterns, balanced rear, good
feeet, moves well.
2. Bullet von Amberhaus: (VG): short back, good
bone, excellent size, masculine, muscular neck,
dark eye, good tailset, depth of chest correct,
balanced, nice shoulder, good feet, good rear
angle, nice movement.
3. Cara’s Sunshine Clemenzo: (VG): good outline, slightly long, exc bone, good marking, eye
should be darker, slightly shallow chest, good
tailset, good feet, slightly straight in the front,
longer hocks, good feet, decent movement
4. Cabo von Moeller Hof: (G): nice outline, moderate, square, super markings, good head and
teeth, good tailset, good bone, straight front,
slightly shallow chest, rear balanced, users rear
well in movement.
5. Daddy’s Smokin Aces De Britton: (G): high on
leg, lacks depth of chest, beautiful markings, narrow skull, nice big teeth, slightly downfaced, long
loin, roach back, narrow chest, short upper arm,
nice feet, straight rear quarters, needs muscle.

and beautifully headed. The sum of the parts added up to
balance, good movement and when I approached her she
gave me a “snotty little” look. . . that’s a bitch! A little soft
in topline, but given overall quality I couldn’t deny her. My
BOS was my true dilemma as my WD was so close to being awarded that ribbon. In the end the dog displaying his
“working abilities” as well as in cranking this dog into the
working “mode” made for a beautifully put together animal
when he stood on his own.
I’d like to also thank Nancy Christensen and my ring stewards for keeping me straight.
They worked very hard and kept things moving smoothly
and efficiently. I’m glad Nancy was my scribe as my handwriting looks like a 3 yr old and you people deserved to be
able to read your critiques . . . .
Puppy Bitches:
1. Sharjets Shooting Starr CGC: (VG); Best
Puppy - feminine, smooth, tight, great neck
set, short loin, very balanced, balanced front
quarters, nice width, strong rear quarters, very
good movement.
2. Sharjets Starr Catcher: (VG): Nice outline,
moderate bone, feminine, nice head, needs
underjaw, slight ewe neck, smooth body,
good pasterns, slight over angle, very good
movement.
3. Sharjets Starr of the East: (VG): Nice outline,
moderate substance, square, lighter eye,
narrow head, downfaced, short loin, correct
tailset, good bone, good feet/pasterns, elbows
out, good croup, ok movement.
Youth 12 -18-Month Dogs
1. Foxfire’s Divine Madness: (E-CC): Best
Youth: good bone, masculine, right size, good
head and expression, dark eye, slightly wet,
depth of chest to leg correct, smooth, tight
elbows, great pasterns and feet, balanced rear
quarters, short hocks, clean movement/holds
topline.
2. Sunnybrooks XXX Vom Kriegshund Zug: (VG):
decent outline, leggy, masculine head, slightly
narrow muzzle, lighter eye, heavier skull, narrow
body, good croup, good bone, shorter upper
arm, good pastern, over-angled rear, longer
hocks, holds topline ok during movement.
Youth 12-18 Month Bitches
1. Sant Kreal Shocolate: (G): good outline, correct
size, nice head, lighter eye, good markings, smooth
body, good topline, slight elbows out, slightly
straight front, nice rear, balanced, ok movement.
2. Enchanted v haus Do’Urden: (G): ok outline,
lacks bone, pretty markings, ewe neck, snipy
skull, round eye, short back, shallow chest,
forward/straight front, rear balances with front,
fair movement.
Open Dogs
1. Sharjets Court Vision CGC RN: (E,CC): Nice
square outline, masculine, pretty picture, exc
head, dark eye, arched neck, good tailset, short
loin, elbows not tight, straighter upper arm,
good feet, straight rear but balanced, clean
movement.
2. Pablito Von Sachsen-Anhalt WAC: (E): Very
male, great bone, square, super markings, exc
head and eye, exc underjaw, deep chest, good
depth/leg ratio, beautiful shoulder, sloping
croup, very good clean movement.
3. Flint von der Wudritz: (VG): Outline good,
moderate substance, good head, dark eye,
good expression, lacks some chest depth,
pronounced wither, slightly straight upper
arm, more angulation in rear than front, good
movement.

21st Annual United Doberman Club National Specialty

I
would like to thank the United Doberman Club for allowing me to judge their 21st Annual National Show. The
show was held in Cary, North Carolina. Although we had
storms throughout a couple of days, the rain did subside
during the judging.
The overall quality of the dogs was a pleasant surprise.
The dogs were all in very good condition (which is due,
in my opinion, to the working aspects of the exhibitors in
the club versus those who only show in AKC conformation shows). The movement of the dogs was to be commended. There were very few movement faults in the
dogs shown during the day. The vast majority of the dogs
were clean coming and going which was remarkable.
There were no extreme movers, by that I mean, there
were no extreme “drive from the rear or reaching from
the fore” assembly. The balance was there and all of the
dogs exhibited that sufficient reach from the front and
drive from the rear when they pushed off from a standing start when gaited. The majority of the dogs were true
coming and going and also single tracked (a lost component in most of the larger breeds).
I would like to thank all of the exhibitors for their sportsmanship and their love for their breed. It is always a

Baby Class: Bitch
1. Rebholzer Iron Butterfly: VG (2 months old):
What a delightful puppy. Very playful and enjoyed the ring. She exhibited bitch characteristics, showing excellent quality at this age. Well
defined outline and head. Nice reach when
gaiting with sufficient rear drive. At this age,
the front was more pronounced than the rear.
Puppy Dogs:
1. Mako Mehetabel’s Righteous Aggression:
(VG) Best Opposite Sex Puppy: Nice size, masculine male puppy. He was nice to watch in motion
with an excellent top line. Clean coming and
going and sufficient reach and drive at this age.
Nice standing, showing good definition of body
and depth of ribs and fore assembly.
2. Cara’s Sunshine Clemenzo: (VG): Nice male
with excellent male characteristics. Good in
motion and clean coming and going. Top line
was good and well defined. Not as much depth
of body as the first place male, yet this should
come with maturity.

male puppy. Not extreme at either end and
nice. Clean movement. Nice feet and turn of
stifle and excellent hocks which attributed to
his movement.
4. Bullet von Amberhaus: (G): Nice puppy.
Sufficient movement, slightly high in the
rear which can be attributed to age. Slightly
choppy in movement which was the puppy
coming out. Clean coming and going. Solid
head, ‘the Doberman look’.
Puppy Bitches:
1. Sharjets Starr Catcher: (VG): Best Puppy:
Really nice bitch puppy. Excellent movement, clean coming and going, exhibited the
suspension in motion that is difficult to find.
Single tracked and had more reach than rear
drive which is acceptable at this age. Typical
outline of a Doberman bitch, exhibiting all
bitch characteristics at this age.
2. Sharjets Starr of the East: (VG): Litter mate
to the Best Puppy. Very similar type and
movement of her sister. Shows great depth of
body with well defined angles. Clean in movement although choppy when pulling too hard.
3. Sharjets Shooting Starr CGC: (VG); The third
Litter mate. The type of these littermates is to
be commended. As with her sisters, she moved
cleanly at both ends, although she had a tendency today to pull too hard which caused her to
sidle too much. She only single tracked at a walking pace. Her exuberance was nice to see. Her
structure is that of a well defined bitch puppy.
(Comment: It is great to see a breeder/owner show
multiple litter mates at any show. It allows the public
to see the consistency or inconsistency of the sire and
dam.)
Youth 12 -18-Month Dogs
1. Foxfire’s Divine Madness: (E-CC): Best Youth:
Nice, solid male. Good size, excellent bone
structure. Presented a good male outline when
standing. Good movement, clean coming and
going, clean angles, good shoulder and turn of
stifle which allowed him to cover ground with
an easy gait.
Youth 12-18 Month Bitches
1. Sant Kreal Shocolate: (VG): Nice bitch. Clean
coming and going with good reach and push
from the rear. Single tracked and exhibited solid
top line when in motion. Nice layback of shoulder
and good angles. Nice picture when standing.
2. Enchanted v haus Do’Urden:(G): Nice bitch,
sufficient bone with good markings. Bitch
head, could have been deeper, good expression when viewed from the front. Clean in
movement, nice drive. Could have used more
reach in the front.
Open Dogs

Below R02 RAE CGC: (E): Nice male. Great
conditioning, beautiful outline when standing
and in motion, clean coming and going, single
tracked at any speed. Excellent reach and drive.
Top Line was solid in motion. Excellent head

2. Navistar’s Cruise Control WAC: (E-CC): Reserve
Winner’s Dog: Nice male. Good male characteristics, shows as a young male, good structure
and depth of body. Clean in movement, single
tracks. Good angles, excellent rear drive when in
motion. Good hocks and turn of stifle.
3. Pablito Von Sachsen-Anhalt WAC: (VG): Nice
male characteristics with good solid head. Good
markings. Sufficient movement, clean at both
ends. Good top line in motion and good ring
sense. Better front reach due to excellent should
opening than rear drive. Good angulation.
4. Sharjets Court Vision CGC RN: (VG): Nice
substantial male. Good structure, head and
body. Clean in motion. Somewhat straight in
shoulder which caused lack of reach. The rear
compensated for the front and created a nice
constant flow when gaiting.
5. Int. Ch First Stryk’s Deadliest Catch CGC
WAC ATT BH Certified EOD: (G): Nice substantial male with good male characteristics. Good
head and chest. Neck showed compactness unless alert. Nice movement, clean at both ends.
Top Line was somewhat weak in motion.
6. Flint von der Wudritz: (G): Nice overall male.
Difficult to see total attributes due to indifferent
attitude in the ring. Has a better front than rear.

Debbie Zappia Obedience Seminar

everal days ago, I opened my email and found a note
from Linda Kurz asking me if I’d be willing to write
a short article about the Obedience Seminar I attended
at the UDC National, back in April. Being the optimist,
I was flattered and said I would give it a try, and sitting
here about to start writing, I thought to myself, this is
September, the seminar was back in April. What was I
thinking, but here goes!
Debbie started the seminar with a brief introduction of herself and then asked each of us to introduce both ourselves
and our dogs, specifically in regards to what training our
dogs already had and what we intended to do, Whether it
was Schutzhund , Obedience competition or another venue.
She asked each of us, in turn, to heel our dogs around
the seminar area so she could assess where we were in
terms of our training, the dog’s drive and attention and our
footwork. As each of us moved our dogs, Debbie provided
commentary on what she was seeing. In my case, my dog
was heeling correctly but to Debbie, he lacked a focused attentive drive. She recommended using treats that required
him to maintain his focus toward me and to “pick up the
pace”, so he would have to stay on his toes. Her focus was
“Building Drive” which several of us needed to do. She did
comment that with proper focused drive, our Dobermans
really loved “showing off”.
One item in particular seemed to be that we were all moving too slowly to show off our dogs’ movement and to keep
them interested. Debbie demonstrated to each of us what a
correct picture looked like by heeling each of our dogs and
using the motivation of either food or toy to get the dog
excited to be heeling correctly. One of her comments was
that many of us were a bit to slow in rewarding the dog for
a correct performance. She also told us to keep our training short between rewards.
Many of the things Debbie talked about were things I had
heard before in various classes, but given her experience
with Dobermans, Debbie got the points across differently
as they related to Dobermans and in a way that I understood very clearly.
I really enjoyed the seminar for two very distinct reasons:
First, Debbie talked to us almost continuously before, during and after our individual work. Second , she answered
all questions asked of her enthusiastically and in detail
sufficient to get her points across. I would not hesitate to
attend another seminar led by Debbie and would encourage anyone that has the opportunity to attend one of her
seminars to do so. You will learn a lot that will help you in
any obedience type competition venue!
In watching and listening to Debbie
assist and critique each of the other
students, I realized that most of us in
the seminar did not have a clear picture
in our mind as to what we wanted, and
I also realized that while one or two
people did seem to have that “picture”
in their minds, we didn’t necessarily
know how to get to that picture. The
seminar was very informative in how
to use various training aids, whether
it was food or toys to bring our dogs’
motivation level up to a higher level of
performance.
The energy and enthusiasm that Debbie
displayed , while working each of our
dogs, was readily apparent. I believe that
energy was felt by each of the dogs and
was motivation in and of itself.

My Observations on the UDC IPO Trial

day of the draw party. We
started out by finding the practice
tracking fields. The fields were
very nice, easy to find and wellmarked. Cinders missed an article

as I have been told that I am not
a very good track layer. Cinders

someone else lays her track. After
our practice track we headed to

realizing her mistake, so she had to be set up again. This
time things went well. The rest of the routine was clean. A
little foraging on the back transport and we finished with a

Overall, the trial was very well organized. Working Dobermanns of the Carolinas did an excellent job. The grounds
were excellent, beautiful tracking fields, wonderful trophies
and great people. Thank you to everyone who helped

2011 UDC Service Dog of the Year: Questwood’s Kisatchie Man,
CD aka “Jäger” owned by Irene Korotev
J
äger has been a member of Missouri Search and
Rescue K-9 since he was 3 months of age. He became
operational in 2005, and earned a C.D. in the AKC obedience ring the same month. He’s operational in area search,
land and water cadaver, light disaster, and trailing. He also
certified in 2009 with the North American Police Working
Dog Association, in Cadaver.
During the past 3 years he’s been part of the heavy rescue
task force with the area fire departments, and is currently
working toward certification under SUSAR (State Urban
Search and Rescue) standards.
Jäger has had a very productive working life, working
on close to 150 searches. Unfortunately, because of our
geographical location in a metropolitan area, most of our
searches are not for live persons, but rather for human
remains, usually as a result of a tragic encounter with
another person.
In March, 2009, Jager assisted the Kansas City, KS Fire
Department in locating the remains of a man who had
perished in a fire which totally destroyed his home. Jäger
and another Doberman found the remains within a few
minutes of entering the burned building. In May of 2009
Jäger assisted the Kansas Bureau of Investigation with the
recovery of a man who had been murdered and buried on
a farm, five feet deep in clay.In Nov. of 2009 he was able
to assist the Atchison County Sheriff’s Dept. by providing
a direction of travel for a woman abducted from her home.
He trailed her west from her home for close to 2 miles
before the high winds and heavy contamination (traffic)
from other searchers made it impossible to continue. When
her remains were located months later, they were approximately 50 miles west of her home. In Feb.2010, he located
the remains of a man missing for seven months for the
Jackson County Sheriff’s Dept. The mummified remains
were in a heavily wooded area on a rock outcropping. In
Nov., 2010 he assisted the Jackson County Sheriff’s Dept.
in locating a woman who had been killed by her grandson.
The remains were buried under a large pile of chat.
In Jan. 2011, Jager assisted in the recovery of a missing
airman at Knob Noster State Park. The airman had been
missing for six days and when found was deceased and
partially covered by a blanket of snow. In August , 2008,
he was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the
Lee’s Summit Police Dept., for locating a suicidal man
before he could harm himself. The PD had been searching
for the man for several hours prior to our arrival. Jäger was
lucky and found him within 15 minutes. In 2008, Jäger

was selected as the DPCA SAR Doberman of the year. In
addition to his search work, of interest was his social side
as attested to at the 2004 UDC temperament test where
he was rated as highly social and highly protective.
Jäger has participated in scores of demos for the general
public as well as for law enforcement. Even with the police
officers he’ll walk up to them and insist they pet him. Always a “people dog”, Jager was entered in a local pet contest, and in a field of 10 other dogs --- all little, cute, cuddly
and fluffy--- he won the Friendliest Dog contest, no mean
feat for a 77-lb Doberman! All these serious examples belie
his usual happy go lucky personality. As a highly social
dog with humans and animals alike, he usually shows his
clownish side. He delights in stealing whatever has human
scent on it and parading in front of you to get your attention so you can chase him. Or sneaking behind your back
and helping himself to any food which is within reach even
if he has to open a duffel bag for treats, or get into the car
to snatch up an unsecured kong or bumper.
At the present time Jäger is perfecting his trailing skills, running trails, which are aged for up to a week, across all kinds
of terrain and all kinds of weather extremes. I do believe he’s
hoping Lexie will take over the Human Remains work so he
can concentrate on trailing. He certainly loves the challenge.

here was a record entry for the International Dobermann Club (IDC) Congress and World Championship
Dog Show held on the beautiful grounds of Károlyi Castle
in Fehérvárcsurgó, Hungary a small hamlet about an hour
by car outside of Budapest. There was a record entry of
666 dogs from 35 countries. The top 10 largest entries
came from the following countries:
On Friday, the opening day of the weekend, is the IDC
Congress business meeting. There were 25 member
countries represented with additional new membership
applications from Dobermann Clubs in Latvia, Cyprus,
and Macedonia. I attended the meeting as the representative from United Doberman Club and my trip was partially
funded for this effort. I presented a full report of the meeting to the UDC board. A condensed version of the report
is included here. During his address to the delegates, Mr.
Hans Wiblishauser (vom Bavaria), President of IDC and the
German DV, made a reference to breeders that live in one
country, but register their puppies in another country. This
is being done to circumvent the breeding rules in the country of residence. He is concerned that puppies are being
registered in one country with tattoo or microchip identification from another country or with no identification at
all. He also raised the issue that the DV may eliminate the
option for cropping and docking in the DV standard which
is used by all FCI countries since Germany is the country
of origin. This could have a big impact on the Dobermann
around the world. However, several insiders that I spoke
with seemed to think that this was more of a trial balloon
than any serious movement to change the standard any
time soon.
It was noted that earlier in 2011 that the breeding and exhibition of cropped and docked dogs was stopped in Italy.
However, it was announced that as of September 1, 2011
that cropped and docked dogs would once again be al-

lowed in Italy primarily due to the work of AIAD President,
Dr. Pierluigi Pezzano (del Citone). Bravo, Dr. Pezzano!!!!
It was noted that in some countries the Dobermann has
almost entirely disappeared because of the ban on cropping and docking.
The German Breed Warden, Norbert Daube (Russheide)
gave a report on the breed statistics from 2010 in Germany. There were a total of 49 litters produced and 29 of
these were produced with foreign sires for a total of 418
puppies. During 2010 582 Dobermanns had official hip assessments with the rating results: 520 – A; 31 – B; 11 – C;
3 – D. There are 12 countries that the DV will accept hip
certifications from, but presently none in the US. However,
I am working as a conduit between the DV and OFA to
try to get OFA certifications accepted. There were 49 ZTP
evaluations held totaling over 400 dogs evaluated.
The IDC Working Trials Warden, Rainer Friedrich (Bodenheim), reported that the entry at this year’s IDC Meisterschaft Working Trial was 36 dogs from 13 countries. This is
less than the 50 dogs that are desired as a minimum entry.
During a discussion with the president of the Serbian
Dobermann Club, Mr. Jovica Golubovic, it was noted that
there was a disproportionately large number of Dobermanns being registered in Serbia compared to the number
of club members and size of entry at their shows.
IDC is proposing to establish a Commission On The
Future Of The Healthy Genetic Orientated Dobermann.
The Commission will consist of: IDC President – Hans
Wiblishauser (Germany); IDC Vice-President – Dr. Pierluigi Pezzano (Italy); IDC Treasurer – Roland Buenekins
(Belgium – van Roveline); a yet to be named International
Geneticist; and a representative from the VDH. The goal
of the project is to determine % of dogs affected by DCM
and the affects of inbreeding on this population.

I would like to encourage any that can to attend these
events. It is a very educational experience.
The following morning the conformation show began.
Babies, Puppies, and Youth dogs were judged in 5 rings on
Saturday and the adult classes judged on Sunday in 6 rings
with each dog receiving a written critique from the judge.
The judge selects the top four from each class, but does not
place them. They return to the finals ring later in the afternoon for final placement by the judging body as a group.

As with any large show where there are six rings of dogs
judging all at the same time, it was very difficult to take in
all of what there was to observe. There were many dogs
of very high quality to be found within the entry and also
many dogs of mediocre and variable quality. Numerous still

around the finals judging ring was several people deep and
standing room only. Aside from the finals rings the podiums were set up and most of the winners came over for a
photo op, but it was difficult to get a good position for the
photos because of the large crowd of Dobermann paparazzi fighting for position.
One of the more controversial aspects of the dog show
was the matching of microchip numbers with the registration papers of the dogs. The situation was more than just
verification of the microchip numbers. Apparently, all of
the exhibitors were contacted a couple of weeks before the
show to submit copies of their dog’s registration papers
which in Europe will normally include the microchip stickers. Questions were raised when some of the entries had
registrations papers from one country and a microchip
from another. This issue ties in with those discussed at the
business meeting earlier. If the microchip numbers could
not be verified against the registration papers or they were
from a country other than where the registration papers
were issued then the entry was excused. From what I
understand most of the excused entries were from Serbia,
but I cannot verify this information. However, as would
be expected, the exhibitors with the excused entries were
unhappy and some very vocal about it.
One of the more pleasant observations of the dog show
was the obvious family atmosphere. Many of the exhibitors had their children along and it was apparent that their
involvement with the dogs was definitely a family affair.
The sun was setting as the final photos were being taken
and everyone was saying their good byes. Friends from
many cultures with the Dobermann in common were packing up for their trip home as another IDC drew to a close.

Shirley Hammond Special 9/11 Recognition

F
inding One Another (FOA) is an organization dedicated
to support the needs of the Search & Rescue field, the
individual canines and their first responder human partners.
More information on Finding One Another can be found on
their web site www.findingoneanother.org. FOA honored
the canine working teams on the 10th anniversary of the
9/11 attacks by organizing a recognition ceremony that was
held on Sunday, September 11, 2011 at Liberty State Park,
Jersey City, NJ. Over 1,000 canine working dog teams who
served at the 9/11 sites were invited to attend the ceremony
along with current working dog teams that lined the processional route honoring the 9/11 teams.
Among the honorees at the 9/11 Ceremony were Shirley
Hammond and Tiffany Mahaffey who were deployed to the
World Trade Center site. Ray Carlisle of Cara Dobermans
along with the United Doberman Club donated funds to
cover the expenses of sending Shirley and Tiffany to the
9/11 event. Shirley’s 9/11 dog, Sunny has passed on and
Shirley attended without a dog. Tiffany attended the event
with her current SAR Doberman – Styx.
Shirley Hammond is the “grand dame” of the Doberman
Search & Rescue community. Since 1977, Shirley has
been reuniting loved ones and bringing closure to families.
Without this dynamic and focused woman, search and
rescue in the United States wouldn’t be where it is today.
Her expertise and experience crosses all the disciplines of
search and rescue – trailing, wilderness, human remains,
evidence and disaster. Throughout her career, Shirley has
worked five Dobermans in a variety of disciplines. Nina,
her first search dog, was a pet prior to being certified in
wilderness, human remains and evidence. Then came
Cinnamon – the first of her dogs specifically destined to
be a search and rescue dog, the dog who responded with
her to Mexico City – the dog who changed it all. Following Cinnamon was Spice a beautiful little girl certified in
wilderness, human remains, water remains, evidence and
FEMA disaster response. Then came Spice’s son, Sunny
Boy – Sunny was a very special dog who was certified as a
Type I FEMA dog and who worked tirelessly with Shirley at
the World Trade Center in 2001.
At the 9/11 Ceremony, Ray Carlisle presented Shirley with
a remarkable stained glass portrait of Shirley and Sunny
Boy copied from a photo taken of Shirley and Sunny on
top of a pile of rubble at the WTC disaster site. The stained
glass portrait was created and donated by Gay Ann Wayne
of Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League MAGDRL
(NY). Gay uses her artistic skills to create stained glass
pieces of art that she donates to raise funds for various
charitable canine events. Gay created not only the portrait
of Shirley and Sunny Boy, but another portrait of Randy
Gross and his partner Dusty which is featured prominently
on the FOA website. Gay is a dynamo who worked tirelessly in assisting Linda Blick of FOA, Jeff Helsdon of the

DPCA, and Ray Carlisle and his group of volunteers in
making this special recognition of canines that served at
9/11 a success. Upon being presented with this remarkable
work of art, in typical Shirley fashion, Shirley thanked all
the canines and handlers that worked during the horrendous disaster and accepted the honor on their behalf.
For me, it was such an honor to meet this petite woman
who I had heard so much about and who had done such
great things, and to be able to participate in this very moving and emotional event to honor those Dog Heroes of
9/11. My thanks to the FOA, and all the sponsors, contributors, canine organizations, and volunteers too numerous
to mention that made this event possible.
