2010/2011 | Gratitude Report
2010/2011 | Gratitude Report
1
You’re holding in your hands a Gratitude Report that was
created just for you. As a supporter of Second Harvest, you
are hand-in-hand with us each and every day, rescuing fresh
food and using it to feed hungry people. Thank you!
Do you see the apple in Melissa’s hand on the next page?
This apple represents fresh food that is rescued by Second
Harvest and ends up in the hands of a hungry person in our
city. Now imagine 16,000 apples - and that’s what you make
possible every single day.
As you turn each page, look at your own hands. Your hands
are part of our story too. Without your support, we simply
could not do what we do.
Second Harvest was created with a simple, common-sense
approach to hunger. As you follow the apple, remember that
at the heart of what we do is a shared commitment to reach
out and lend a helping hand and feed our neighbours.
As the apple passes from one person to another, it represents
the sharing of food – and love – with our neighbours.
All because of you.

3
Melissa Dedic, Second Harvest Foodraiser
Melissa makes connections with those in the food industry and encourages them
to donate their excess food to Second Harvest, instead of letting it go to waste.
“Why are people going hungry in Toronto when
perfectly good food is going to waste every
day? We rescue excess food, which turns into
healthy meals for the many people in need of food
assistance in Toronto. For me, it doesn’t get any
better than that.”
Rosanne Longo, Chair, Longo’s Family Charitable Foundation
Rosanne leads Longo’s giving program and ensures that excess food from their
stores is donated to Second Harvest.
“At Longo’s we’re all about families helping families.
Knowing that the excess fresh and perishable
foods are being picked up and prepared for those
in need, especially when 40% of the recipients are
children, we know it’s the right thing to do.”
4
5
Blayne Walker, Second Harvest Driver
Blayne rescues excess, fresh food and delivers it to community agencies
that feed people in need all across the city.
“The work of Second Harvest crosses all
boundaries of politics, religion, age and gender.
Everybody eats – that’s a basic human right!
Second Harvest provides the link to those in
need. My customers are always happy to see me.
Second Harvest is a dynamic organization and
values me as an important person in achieving
their goal of not letting anyone in the community
go hungry. I love it.”
Jane Ross, Second Harvest Volunteer
Jane volunteers in the Second Harvest warehouse two days a week, sorting
food and getting it ready for the drivers to load it onto the trucks.
“I feel useful. I feel like we can do it. I know that
people are receiving food through the agencies
and thus able to live fuller, more productive lives.
I also know the value of food from growing my
own produce. It’s an enormous amount of work.
I feel good about rescuing the crops of other
people’s hard work and preventing it from going
to landfill sites.”
6
7
Jo-Anne Sobie, Second Harvest Executive Director
Jo-Anne leads our team in fulfilling our mission to help feed hungry people by
picking up excess fresh food and delivering it to social service agencies in Toronto.
“I feel fortunate that I have never needed food
support. I go to the supermarket, buy what I want,
and cook it in my own kitchen. I have always been
aware of the needs of those in Toronto who are not
so fortunate. It is truly an honour to be in a position
to do something that will make a difference, not
some day in the future - but today and every day for
children, youth, women escaping violence, or those
who are simply down on their luck. I take great
pride in leading this organization into the future.”
Kevin A. Li, Head of Corporate Finance, CIBC World Markets
Kevin leads CIBC World Markets’ Lunch Money Day fundraiser and is also a
personal donor.
“Hunger should be a largely solvable problem
in today’s society if we put our minds to it.”

9
Iris Bartraw, St. Felix Centre, Program Director & Kitchen Manager
Iris works in the kitchen at St. Felix Centre serving healthy, nutritious meals to
those in her community who are experiencing challenges including homelessness,
mental illness, addictions, violence, malnutrition, abuse, insufficient education and
lack of positive role models.
“Without the support of Second Harvest, we
couldn’t feed hungry kids, homeless people, seniors
living on a low income. There are so many people
in our neighbourhood who are struggling. We have
50 children coming to our meal programs five days
a week, some of them all by themselves. They need
to eat.”
Lana Lâm, St. Felix Centre Client
Lana attends community programs and helps cook in the kitchen at
St. Felix Centre.
“I go to St. Felix Centre because everyone there
is so kind. Good food, good volunteers and good
activities for me like yoga, dancing, cooking and
eating. The food I receive there makes me feel
good inside and out. It makes me feel that there is
somebody in this world that cares about me. I am
old, they make my last days on earth fulfilling.”
11
Food Donors
You’ve followed the Second Harvest apple through this
Report… and now we celebrate our Second Harvest family
of supporters who make this all possible.
You.
We are proud to list our corporate partners, community
and foundation donors, food donors, individual donors and
our monthly donors. Each and every one of you helps us
rescue fresh food and feed hungry people.
We are inspired and a little bit humbled by the names on our
list. We hope that seeing your name in such distinguished
company makes you feel good about your support of our
cause.
Thank you. So much.

Auditor’s Report
Rescuing and delivering 6.8 million pounds of food in one year takes a tremendous
group effort. It involves 600 food donors, 7,700 financial donors, 1,400 volunteers,
more than 200 community agencies, 7 trucks, and a passionate staff and Board.
Now that’s a network of Food Rescuers.
We are incredibly grateful to work with every one of our supporters. Last year, together, we:
Provided 16,000 meals each day to our most vulnerable neighbours
Started serving 4 new community agencies through our Food Rescue & Delivery
program
Introduced a new program, SHOP (Second Harvest Outreach Program), serving
fresh produce to residents of a high-demand neighbourhood through a monthly
farmer’s style market
Maintained our cost to deliver one meal at 50 cents
Conducted a review of our Board by-laws and policies
Increased awareness of food rescue in Toronto
Engaged community volunteers in over 15,000 hours of service
Over the last 26 years we have prevented more than 70 million pounds of good food from being
wasted and fed millions of hungry neighbours.
We are also grateful that there is more food out there to be rescued, because with each day that
passes, the number of people going hungry in Toronto grows. Thankfully, we also know there are
more Food Rescuers like you in our community.
In our collective efforts to feed those who are hungry, we will continue to strive for excellence,
efficiency, transparency, and social impact. Whether we donate food, fundraise or volunteer, we
can all feed it forward.
