L
ast year, an 8th
grader on our staff
named Altug Delen
held two very popular
treasure hunts. He is in the
high school now, but I am
here to continue what he
started.
I have hidden three
different small cardboard
boxes with a list of prizes
in each one.
One box has been hid-
den in the Rogers Building,
one in the LAC Building,
and one in the Upper
School Building.
None of the RAVIN’
TIMES editors can help
you! I am the only one who
knows where the boxes are,
and our staff cannot even
compete with you today.
They have to wait until tomorrow!
I will give you clues that
contain hints about where
they are hidden. Once you
find a box, you have to
bring it to ME — Brian
McSweeney — to redeem
your prizes.
ONLY ONE MIDDLE
SCHOOL STUDENT will get
the stuff listed in each box
unless the finder wants to
share. After all, they won so
they get the reward.
Posters labeled
“Treasure Hunt” will be
placed in all three buildings
so you can see which boxes
have already been found
and by whom.
READY, SET, GO!!!
Read the poems below for clues to find the treasures:

Who is your favorite Mario character?
By Ryan Faubert
6TH GRADE
I
asked some Riverfield
Middle School students and even some
teachers, “Who is your
favorite Mario character?”
Here is what they said.
Most people chose
good-guy characters. Several people chose Mario
himself. “He is the leader,”
said Teddy Ames.
Brian McSweeney noted that “Mario is one of the
famous figures.”
Ray Siegfried likes him
because “his colors are red
and blue, and those are my
favorites.”
Several other people
chose Luigi.
Brendan Paul likes Luigi “because I like green,
and his hat is green.”
Gabe Feather thinks
Luigi “is better than Mario
in every which way.”
Robert Hale picked
Yoshi “because he is a dinosaur.”
Hampton Gold chose
Donkey Kong “because he
is muscular and fat.”
Not everyone picked
one of the good guys,
though.
Miles Capehart picked
Waluigi, “because he is
cool and fast and has good
accuracy.”
Mitchell Scott chose
Boo “because he is a
ghost.”
And Mr. Clark likes

Bowser “because he is funny.”
Which character is your
favorite?
An interview with Izzy Bliss
I
zzy is a junior in the
Upper School, and she
is an interesting person.
I decided to interview her
because she is my sister’s
friend, and my sister
Izzy is a new student at Riverfield. She takes Rock Band and Art.

wanted me to interview her
for Ravin’ Times.
Ryan: How long have you
been going to Riverfield?
Izzy: I have been going to
RCDS for almost a year
now.
R: What grade are you in?
I: I’m a junior in the high
school.
R: What is your favorite
thing about Riverfield?
I: I just really like how
unique all the people here
are.
R: What’s your favorite
subject at school?
I: I really like Art and History.
R: What do you want to do
when you’re all grown up?
I: Maybe own a bakery.
R: When did you start
singing?
I: I started singing this
year in Rock Band.
R: What is your favorite
kind of music?
I: Indie rock and all that
good alternative stuff.
R: Do you get nervous singing up on stage?
I: Yes! I get insanely nervous, it’s so bad.
R: What are your hobbies?
I: I like art and baking.
R: Who is your favorite
friend that does not go to
Riverfield?
I: I have two who aren’t
here: Morgan Kramer and
your sister, Marie Faubert.
R: Do you ever sing your
name in a song, like “Iggy”?
I: There was one time at
camp where we did a spoof
of “Fancy” and used my
name instead of “Iggy,” so
yeah.
R: Thanks for taking the
time for this!
I: No problem, Ryan.
Thanks for asking!

Two new iPhones, 6 and 6 Plus
By Elias Lavanhar
8TH GRADE
O
n September 19, two
new iPhones hit the
market, and more
than 10 million were sold
within the first three days.
The iPhone 6 is the second largest iPhone Apple
has made. Its 4.7 inch screen
size is .7 inches larger than
the iPhone 5. The iPhone 6
Plus has the largest screen
size of any iPhone at 5.5
inches.
The bodies of both
phones are made of aluminum and stainless steel, the
same materials as the latest
iPod Touch.
The phones run Apple’s
new iOS 8 operating system,
which can also be download-
ed on older versions of the
iPhone.
The camera on the back
of the new phones is better
than on previous iPhones,
but strangely enough, the
front cameras are worse
than on some older models.
The biggest issue that
has come up so far is that
the phones may bend in
users’ pockets. There are
reports that say the iPhone
6 Plus bends when enough
pressure is applied to its
weak spot, located directly
under the volume buttons.
I suggest you stay away
from the iPhone 6 Plus
until Apple fixes this problem.
The smaller iPhone 6 is
not very likely to bend, but
if you would like to test
your luck, you can purchase both phones at many
stores now.
I have messed around
with the phones at the
AT&T store, but I do not
plan on upgrading anytime
soon. I would rate the new
iPhones at 7.5 Steve Jobs’
glasses out of 10 Steve Jobs’
glasses.

Let’s talk Halloween candy
E
very year on October 31, children of
all ages go trick-ortreating and get lots of
candy.
There are always many
different kinds of candy
offered. For example, there
are chocolate bars, fruit
candies, candy corn, sour
candy, and many other
kinds.
Since most of us probably have a big pile of Hal-

loween candy at home
right now, I asked around
the RCDS Middle School
for students’ opinions on
trick-or-treating and Halloween candy.
Shashu Singh, 7th
grade, says, “Halloween
candy tastes OK.”
But 8th grader Drake
Daubert is more enthusiastic. “Halloween candy is
the essence of life, and I
wouldn’t be here today
without it,” he says. “Halloween candy gets me up
in the morning.” Drake
likes milk chocolate best.
His classmate, John
Goodenberger, says Halloween candy “is pretty
swag.”
Mrs. Dickey says she
likes “anything chocolate.”
Grace Gunderson, an
8th grader, isn’t that picky.
She says, “I like anything
sweet.”
Most people have their
limits, though. Eighth
grader Aubrey Adaire says,
“I don’t like anything with
caramel.”
And 6th grader Miles
Capehart says, “I eat corn
out of a pot, not a kettle.”
Some people don’t eat
Halloween candy at all.
Mitchell Scott, a 7th
grader, says, “I got food
poisoning from it once, so
I’ve never eaten it again.”
Jake O’Shaughnessy,
also a 7th grader, says, “I
like Kit Kats — they are
delicious.”
I also like chocolate
best. My goal on Halloween is always to get as
much candy as I can. I
want it to last until Easter,
but I always eat it too fast.

„Forza Horizon 2‟ vs. „Driveclub‟
By Hampton Gold
6TH GRADE
“D
riveclub” has
amazing graphics
but a couple of
flaws. It is not an open world
game, which I think will
bring the revenue way down.
There is no real purpose if
you can’t go out and do
whatever you want.
And this new game by
Sony is exclusive to PS4. I
had a firsthand experience
with this game when it was
released on Tuesday, October 7.
It has a very quick intro.
It just loads you in, and then
you’re racing. This is cool,
but then the game goes into
much more depth with a
campaign.
Overall, I would give
this game a modest rating
of 7 out of 10 for its lack of
free roam.
“Forza Horizon 2” is an
open world game with over
200 different cars. Wow!
Published by Microsoft, it
is exclusive to Xbox 360
and Xbox One. I had a
firsthand experience with
this game on Wednesday,
October 1 (the day after it
was released), and I will
say it had great handling.
Many people love this
new game because it is set
in Europe, and you get to
tour around. In the first
Forza Horizon, you only
toured Colorado. That is a
little small for touring, so
No. 2 was a big step up for
the franchise.
Overall, I would give
this game a nice 10 out of
10 for its great graphics, a
major step-up in cars, and
its amazing free roam.
So it looks like “Forza
Horizon 2” wins this review
competition!
Are these two all of the
new car games, or will there
be more games coming out?
Find out in my next review!

Their next and current
leader is Abu Bakr alBaghdadi. Al-Baghdadi has
led ISIS since 2010. His
followers call him “alKhalifah Ibrahim.”
ISIS has been a huge
threat ever since they began. They have been chasing down citizens all over
the Middle East, killing
groups of people at a time,
holding public executions,
and other terrorist actions.
Their aim is “to create
an Islamic state across
Sunni areas of Iraq and in
Syria,” according to CNN.
They control hundreds of
square miles in the region
and are fighting for more
territory.
In an episode of 60
Minutes, they showed ISIS
members yelling, “We’re
coming for you, Obama!”
I doubt that President
Obama gets distracted by
stuff like that because
there is physically no way
ISIS can get to the West or
East Coast of the United
States. They don’t have any
boats like our Navy, and
they don’t have any jets
like our Air Force. The
only way they could attack
the U.S. is by doing what al
Qaeda did about 13 years
ago on 9/11. Al-Qaeda hijacked four planes on that
day and used them to attack targets in New York
City and Washington D.C.
But our security is better now, and we are on
guard. Beginning on September 23 of this year, the
U.S. has been carrying out
airstrikes against ISIS in
Syria.
That’s an update on
what’s going on in that
part of the world now.

A smashing game ...

he newest Super
Smash Bros. game is
already out for the
Nintendo 3DS and the Wii
U. When I wrote this article, I didn’t know it was
coming out the very next
day! I only played the
demo, but it was awesome.
I really liked this game.
I had never played a Smash
Bros. game before, so this
was a new experience for
me. The demo is really
cool, and I’m sure the final
product is great as well.
Villager is my favorite
character. He can pocket
items by pressing B, and
then you press B again to
shoot. I also like that he
can plant a tree by pressing his down smash button
(Ⓑ + ↓) four or five times,
and it does a good amount
of damage.
His comebacks are very
strong, too. He cannot get
knocked out of the map
very easily. He can come
back by rocket by using his
side smash (Ⓑ+ →) or
(Ⓑ+←). He can also get
carried by balloons by using his up smash button
(Ⓑ+ ↑).
I have also seen people
play as Pac-Man, and I
might have to reconsider
my favorite.
Super Smash Bros.
usually is not on a
handheld console, so I’m
excited about how this
game will turn out. There

Don’t tell anyone, but you
are probably going to get
this game, so ... There are
Sheik, Link, Little Mac,
Zelda, Samus, Zero Suit
Samus, Pac-Man, Mario,
and many more!
I think the game is
awesome and will turn out
to be great! Will you get
Super Smash Bros.?
POLL: Favorite game company

vorite video game company. The three choices were
Microsoft (Xbox), Nintendo (Wii, Wii U, 3DS), and
Sony (PlayStation).
People gave me many
different answers, and I
was surprised when I
found out the results. My
fellow Ravin’ Times editors
were surprised, too.
Nintendo wins, but just
barely. Out of 59 responses,
Nintendo got 21 votes, Microsoft got 20 votes, and
Sony got 18 votes. It was
VERY close!
I wanted either Nintendo
or Sony to win, mainly because I don’t have an Xbox.
In truth, all of these companies have at least one
thing about them that I hate.
For instance, Microsoft always releases games on the
Xbox 360 first before any
other console. I really hate
that! Why don’t they release
their games on all consoles
at the same time?
Anyway, in case you
weren’t there for the poll,
which company is your favorite?

Which is your favorite NFL team?
By Ray Siegfried
6TH GRADE
O
n October 7, Mrs.
Dickey and I asked a
total of 56 middle
school students, “Which is
your favorite NFL team?”
I had a list of popular
teams for everyone to
choose from. Since we are
now in the middle of football
season, I thought it would be
interesting to see which
teams you like best.
I polled the whole middle school during lunch.
Mrs. Dickey did half of the
room, and I did half of the
room. A lot of the girls did
not answer, but the ones
that were talking about it
had strong opinions.
Sam Brown said, “I like
the Jets.”
Erik Overgaard said, “I
like the New York Giants,”
but the Giants were not on
the list.
I was expecting nobody
to vote for the Redskins
because, being in Oklahoma, many people consider
that team’s name racist.
I was expecting maybe
ten people to vote for the
Cowboys. I was surprised
that the Cowboys are still
“America’s Team.” They
got a fourth of the votes!

appy is an emotion you feel when you do something good or you are having a good
time. What makes the Ravin’ Times editors happy? Let’s hear what some of them
had to say.
Brian McSweeney says, “Playing basketball makes me happy.” Ryan Faubert and Ray
Siegfried both say “playing baseball.” Brenden Paul said, “playing football with my friends.”
Elias Lavanhar likes “playing games with my friends.” This works for Bryan Tran, too.
Gabe Feather said, “Hanging out with my friends.”
As you can see, a lot of things make people happy. So go out there and play football, or
just hang with your friends. Just remember to smile!

GAME REVIEW: „Five Nights at Freddy‟s
By Gabe Feather
6TH GRADE
T
here is a new game
in the horror genre
that is better than
“Slender,” “Outlast,”
“Amnesia,” or “SCP —
Containment Breach.” It’s
“Five Nights at Freddy’s.”
In this game, you’re
stuck inside a pizza place
overnight with animatronic characters. The point of
the game is to survive for
five nights, from 1 a.m. to
6 a.m., without dying.
There are four animatronics in this game: Foxy
the Pirate Fox, Freddy
Fazbear the bear, Chica
the Chicken, and Bonnie
the Bunny.
Now you may wonder,
“What are the animatronics going to do?”
Here’s what. They think
you are simply another
robot that is not in costume yet. So they stuff you
into an animatronic, killing
you in the process.
They seem harmless
when they are exposed to
security cameras because
they freeze. So you may
think you will just leave the
lights on and the doors
closed the whole time.
But, SURPRISE!
You have limited battery power, so you can’t do
Chica the Chicken (at left) and Bonnie the Bunny (at right) …
PHOTOS: 2PARAGRAPHS.COM and FIVE-NIGHTS-AT-FREDDYS.WIKIA.COM
that. If you try, the power
will eventually run out and
the animatronics will be
able to roam free without
stopping.
It may seem like a boring game if you die frequently and never get past
a certain round, but once
you pass Round 3, Foxy
awakens. Foxy is the most
dangerous character because it moves even when
you’re watching it.
It is said there is a sequel to this game coming
in 2015 that will be even
scarier. There are hints of
it on the game’s official
website. Rated 12+.

involvement with animals. I’ve always wanted to learn more about
her, so I asked her a few questions.
Gabe Feather: How long have you been teaching?
Mrs. O’Halloran-Blevins: 42 years.
G: What is your favorite animal?
Mrs. O: All of them!
G: If you could have one extinct animal come back to life, which one
would you choose?
Mrs. O: I would like the Passenger pigeon back.
G: How many pets would you like to have?
Mrs. O: I have animals in the lab and at my home, but I think two animals of the same species is good because they can have a friend.
G: Thanks, Mrs. O!

Opinion: PS3 OR XBOX 360?
By Brenden Paul

hey are not the
newest game systems, but right now
more people own the PS3
and the Xbox 360 than
any other systems.
The Playstation 3 was a
new console released by
Sony in 2006, whereas the
Xbox 360 was released by
Microsoft in 2005.
I went around and
asked a few of my fellow
6th graders which game
system they liked best and
why.
Erik Overgaard said
“Xbox 360, because you
can make your own avatar.”
Ryan Faubert chose it
too, because “it has way
more games.”
PHOTOS: KIDDIESCORNERDEALS.COM
and GALLERYHIP.COM
Ray Siegfried said “it is
just better.”
But the PS3 also had its
fans. Robert Hale thinks “it
is awesome.”
Gabe Feather says “it is
way better.”
Bryan Tran chose the
PS3 “because I own one.”
Hampton Gold likes the
fact that it has several generations: the original PlayStation, the PS2, the PS3,
and the PS4.
I like the PS3 better because it has different styles
like the PlayStation Portable
and PlayStation Vita. Both
are portable game systems,
which I prefer.
Xbox doesn’t offer any
portable systems, but I wish
they did.
So, which do you prefer?
The Xbox 360 or the PS3?
Or do you like both?
What is your favorite Halloween creature?
I
t’s the season for Halloween! Out of curiosity, I asked a few people, “What is your favorite
Halloween creature?”
A lot of people chose
skeletons. “They are cool,”
said Bryan Tran and Miles
Capehart agreed. Ryan
Faubert likes skeletons
best because “they are really scary.” Robert Hale likes
them because “they are
spooky.”
Ghosts were popular,
too. Mr. Clark prefers them
“because they scare you,
but they don’t hurt you.”
Jack Jones agreed, saying
“YOLO.”
But some people chose
certain creatures because
they were dangerously
scary. Gabe Feather picked
werewolves “because they
November 2014
RAVIN‟ TIMES
have giant claws and sharp
fangs.”
Ms. Elliott picked zombies “because they are
gross.”
Brian McSweeney
chose “bats, because they
can fly.”
Hampton Gold likes
vampires “because they do
so many cool things.”
Senora Phillips said,
“black cats, because I used
to have one, and they are
scary!”
Mrs. Dickey likes seeing
people dressed up as gypsies. “I love the costumes,”
she said.
Two people said witches were their favorite Halloween creatures, but for
very different reasons.
Teddy Ames likes them
“because they can vaporize
stuff.” Mrs. Waddel likes
them because “they are
strong women.”
Everybody has a different favorite, but more people said “skeletons” than
any other creature.
What is your favorite?
I hope you enjoyed
your Halloween, and I
hope this article reminds
you of it.

How do social media
affect your mood?
By Robert Hale
6TH GRADE
I
nstagram, Facebook,
and Twitter are now
very popular, especially among teenagers. But
what do these sites do to
your mood? Which one has
the biggest effect?
A study earlier this year
by Rebtel, the world's largest mobile VoIP company
after Skype, has shown
that Facebook has the biggest effect.
In 2012, another study
showed that other people’s
online emotions can rub
off on you! Some of the
people participating in the
study were exposed to positive posts, some were exposed to negative posts,
and the rest were exposed
to neither positive nor negative (emotionless) posts.
Those who saw the positive posts then posted
their own positive comments, those who read
negative posts posted negative comments, and the
people who saw “emotionless” posts posted emo-
tionless comments.
But Facebook is not
the only culprit. More
studies show that Instagram could be lowering
your self-esteem.
Hanna Krasnov, coauthor of a study on Facebook and envy, says
that “you get more explicit and implicit cues of
people being happy, rich,
and succesful from a
photo than from a status
update. A photo can very
powerfully provoke immediate social comparison, and that can trigger
feelings of inferiority.
You don’t envy a news
story.”
Many people will
spend hours looking
through their phone or
laptop files to find one
good picture to post on
Instagram. But they don’t
realize everyone does the
same thing!
Because of this, everyone perceives that others’ lives are more beautiful and happier than
their own. That just isn’t
the case.
Many teenagers use some form of social media today, as Robert
demonstrates.

Dilly Deli, El Guapo’s Mexican Cantina, Mary’s Italian Trattoria, Mod’s Coffee
& Crepes, Pie Hole Pizzeria, Spaghetti Warehouse,
Umberto’s Pizzaria, and
Yokozuna.
I picked Yokozuna because they have really good
Japanese food.
“I like Mod’s because
they have good S’mores
crepes,” said Gabe Feather.

Dilly Deli because “it is a
creative restaurant.”
Bryan Tran said, “I like
Spaghetti Warehouse. It is
one of the only places I eat
downtown.”
There are ten of us on
the staff this semester, and
here are the results: Chimi’s
and Spaghetti Warehouse
tied for first place with three
votes each! Umberto’s, Dilly
Deli, Mod’s, and Yokozuna
each got one vote.
I was surprised that no
one chose Mary’s Italian
Trattoria, El Guapo’s, or the
Pie Hole, because they are
all good restaurants, too.
I believe that Chimi’s is a
little bit better than Spaghetti Warehouse, but that’s
just my opinion. If you want
to know which one is really
the best, head downtown
and try a couple of these
restaurants! You’ll be glad
you did.
