Rep. Joe Wilson
was formally rebuked by the
House on Tuesday for his outburst during President Barack
Obama’s health care address.
The vote came after a congressional clash over civility that
showcased the deep partisan divisions in the House.
In a mainly party-line vote of
240-179, the House held that by
shouting “You lie” during the
president’s speech, the South
Carolina Republican committed
a “breach of decorum and degraded the proceedings of the
joint session,
to the discredit of the
House.”

Wilson’s surprising act. It attracted millions of dollars in political contributions to both parties and made Wilson a hero to
some and an embarrassment
and symbol of Republican disrespect to the president to others.
Seven Republicans, including
Rep. Anh “Joseph” Cao of New
Orleans, joined 233 Democrats
in approving the resolution.
Twelve Democrats joined Wilson and 166 other Republicans
in opposing it.

The family of Saints owner Tom Benson
completed its purchase of a trio of largely
idle commercial properties adjacent to the
Louisiana Superdome on Tuesday, the first
milestone in the new agreement between the
football team and the state and a deal that
should quickly deliver benefits to fans.
Through their company, Zelia LLC, Benson’s daughter and grandchildren paid the
California real estate investment firm Hertz
Investment Group $42.1 million for the 26story Dominion Tower office building, the
400,000-square foot New Orleans Centre
mall and 2,000-space parking garage in one
of the largest downtown real estate transactions since Hurricane Katrina.
In partnership with the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District, the Benson
family plans to immediately begin redeveloping the area around the Superdome into a
sports entertainment district. The Bensons
hope their efforts not only will lure future

Lt. Justin Brown said. In fact,
his passenger was a 19-year-old
man, Delair Jenkins of Franklinton, in a wig, Brown said.
After driving off, Brock realized the passenger in his back
seat was a male and kicked Jenkins out of the car, he said.
Police said that is it unclear
exactly how the sequence developed, but it is believed that at
that point Jenkins’ partner,
17-year-old Kendarrious Bautista got into the back seat of
the car, took out a gun and demanded money, Brown said. As
Brock drove off, Bautista fired
two shots, hitting Brock in the
back and the head, he said.

Former Judge William Roe,
an 18-year veteran of the 25th
Judicial District Court in Plaquemines Parish, was convicted
Tuesday of pocketing more than
$6,000 he got from the state
Supreme Court, as reimbursement for judicial expenses, instead of depositing that money in
a parish bank account.

Roe, who did not seek re-election last year amid an investigation by state Legislative Auditor
Steve Theriot that ultimately led
to a six-count indictment last
year, faces up to five years in
prison on each of the three
felony counts of unauthorized

Bayou St. John gained about a dozen new ducks this summer
near Moss Street and Grand Route St. John. Some residents

The sight of a dozen white
Pekin ducks calmly swimming
through the waters of Bayou St.
John is a beautiful thing — except to certain neighbors who
see the waterfowl as a nasty
nuisance.
These disparate views of
duckdom have had feathers flying along the historic waterway.
While most folks find the ducks a
welcome presence, some quack

— about their displeasure.
“With the new population of
ducks along the area of Bayou
St. John near Grand Rte. St.
John & Moss, I notice that there
is also a new explosion (of sorts)
of feathers and duck poop,”
wrote one neighbor in an online
neighborhood bulletin board.
Acknowledging the beauty of
“the feathered creatures,” the
writer added, “I now avoid that
area due to my doggie’s savory
appetite for feathers and duck
poop, and of course do not want
a huge vet bill.”
“The duck mess, the seeds,
the feathers, make this section
of the area dirty and to be
avoided by walkers of all ages,”
another person wrote.
