Offers Free “Feline Fix” for Feral Cats

fix the feral cats in your neck of the woods at no cost to you with
their Feline Fix program.
Stipulations for the Feline Fix:
• Cats must come to the clinic IN a live humane trap. The trap needs
to be covered, and we prefer the cats be trapped the morning before
coming in (not the night before)
• We accept feral cats from 7:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Monday to Friday
with no appointment needed
• The Feline Fix will cover the surgery and rabies vaccine for the cats.
Additional things needed or requested will be at the responsibility
of the trapper
SOS of Ohio Spay and Neuter Clinic is located at 3121 West
Broad Street, near Broad and Westgate Avenue. You can contact them

F.A.N.’s Featured Franklintonian: Artie Lee Skaggs
Arthur (Artie) Lee Skaggs rushed into the world December 1, 1954
as a 7-months preemie in the elevator of Mercy Hospital on South
High Street. Shortly thereafter, he was named after his grandfather,
Arthur Lee Fultz the pastor of Church of Christ in Christian Union
at the NE corner of North Central Avenue and Gay Street (now
located at South Central Avenue and Town Street). The Skaggs lived
directly across the street from the church on North Central Avenue
at the time.
Franklinton has always been home. Artie has many memories of
classic Franklinton organizations and landmarks. He often went to
the Boys (and Girls) Club to play pool and basketball. Summertime
found him at Sunshine Pool (Dodge Recreation Center) when it was
a 10 cents admission. In those days he could sell two pop bottles to
go swimming. Every June he ate cotton candy at the Westside Jubilee
also held at Sunshine Park with his brother, Jim, and sister, Candy.
He attended Chicago Avenue, West Broad Street, Franklinton, and
Starling schools.
Artie was brought up by his Mother, Eileen, and her husband Ed
Underwood, who he called “Dad.” Ed was involved with his kids
and surprised them when he decided to build a boat. Artie said,
“I laughed, because when Dad said that, he had about three 2 x 4
boards in the back yard. But, sure enough, a year later we hauled
the houseboat called “Stormy” off to Buckeye Lake almost every
weekend for three years—from about the time I was 13 to 16 years
old. ” Artie was a strong swimmer and liked to dive from the boat
roof to go under it and resurface on the other side. He is not sure
he would try that today.
Ever in a hurry… Artie left school at 15 years old to marry his
sweetheart, Robin Smith from Jones Avenue, as they were expecting
their only child, Tina. Artie fondly recalls their small family wedding
in Wise, Virginia. Just as they started down the chapel aisle Robin
shoved a pickle and a lemon into his suit coat pocket -- in case she
needed a snack during the ceremony. They divorced years later and
each remarried. Even so, the couple remained best friends until
Robin’s untimely death in July 2012.
Artie went to work at Josie’s Pizza in 1971 for as many hours as
he could get to support his young family and still works there today.
Now, he enjoys time with his grandchildren, spoiling his two very
large dogs, sometimes fishing as well as watching 1960s westerns
and cooking shows on TV. He learned to cook watching the best, his
Mom and Grandmother, as a kid. Aside from making EXCELLENT
pizza pies at Josie’s Artie says that everyone loves his chili and beef
and noodles.
Artie is loyal to his family, Josie’s Pizza, his employer for 44
years, and his neighborhood, never leaving any of them for long.
This native advises Franklinton kids to “stay off drugs; stay out of
trouble; and stay in school to get an education – especially these days.”
He also would like more residents to fix up the vacant houses to live
in and work to get the dope dealers out of here so people can live
decently.

presents
Most of the calls the historical society gets are questions or
requests for our publications. In mid- September we received a
phone call from Martha Southard. She donated a letter about the
1913 flood that a relative sent to a sister, Anna E. Southland in Akron,
Ohio. It is on the family business letterhead –The Southard Novelty
Co. –with offices at 240 North Third Street and a factory at 237-241
North Lazelle Street.
Have you seen this neat sign a local property owner had made
by a local artist? It’s on State Street across from the Boys & Girls
Club.

Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Secret Ocean 3D. Narrated by renowned
oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Secret Ocean
3D brings to the stunning giant 3D screen a breakthrough look at
a secret world within the ocean that is perhaps the biggest story of
all—that the smallest life in the sea is the mightiest force on which
we all depend. Alongside marine biologist Holly Lohuis, Jean-Michel
Cousteau invites audiences to dive into this whole new world that
will leave them in awe of the beauty and diversity of the oceans – the
source of all life on our planet – and inspire an even stronger desire
to protect what they have either seen for the first time or perhaps
re-discovered along the journey. (Running time: 40 minutes)

understand a new and fascinating natural history. (Running time:

mausoleum for the Columbus Volunteer Challenge: Picture It. Twenty
volunteers weeded, fertilized, mulched, divided plants, edged, planted a tree & cleaned out the basement. It’s worth a drive by to
see how nice the grounds look!
And our most popular adult event, Tales from the Crypt is coming
soon. Each year several of our “residents” return to share the story
of their lives. Dress warmly as the Abbey has no heat.
Tales From the Crypt. Friday, October 23 at 7 pm and 8:30 pm;
Saturday, October 24 at 7:30 pm. $20 advance ticket price. Tickets
are recommended as the program is usually a sell out. If available,
