Jean Staniszewski A Prayer for the Armed Forces Almighty God, stretch forth Your mighty arm to strengthen and protect the men and women of our Armed Forces. As they face the myriad of challenges and decisions that each day is destined to bring, may they be anchored by their faith, protected by Your presence and comforted by the knowledge that they are loved by You and by this community of faith. Grant that, meeting danger with courage, and all occasions with discipline loyalty, they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. March 6, 2011 Ninth Ordinary Sunday Page Four ASH WEDNESDAY MARCH 9, 2011 Ashes will be distributed at the following Masses: 6:30 a.m. 8:00 a.m. 9:30 a.m. (Polish) 12:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. (Polish) Prayer Service: 3:00 p.m. A Day of Repentance: The distribution of ashes reminds us of our own mortality and calls us to repentance. In the early Church, Ash Wednesday was the day on which those who had sinned, and who wished to be readmitted to the Church, would begin their public penance. The ashes that we receive are a reminder of our own sinfulness, and many Catholics leave them on their foreheads all day as a sign of humility. Fasting and Abstinence Are Required: The Church emphasizes the penitential nature of Ash Wednesday by calling us to fast and abstain from meat. Catholics who are over the age of 18 and under the age of 60 are required to fast, which means that they can eat only one complete meal and two smaller ones during the day, with no food in between. Catholics who are over the age of 14 are required to refrain from eating any meat, or any food made with meat, on Ash Wednesday. Taking Stock of Our Spiritual Life: This fasting and abstinence is not simply a form of penance, however; it is also a call for us to take stock of our spiritual lives. As Lent begins, we should set out specific spiritual goals we would like to reach before Easter and decide how we will pursue them—for instance, by going to daily Mass when we can and receiving the Sacrament of Confession more often. LENTEN SCHEDULE Fridays 2:00 p.m. – Stations of the Cross in English (with school students) 4:00 p.m. – Fish Fry 6:00 p.m. – Stations of the Cross in English 7:00 p.m. – Stations of the Cross in Polish Sunday 6:15 p.m. — Lenten Lamentations in Polish BAPTISM DURING LENT One of the disciplines of Lent is fasting. As Catholics, we fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. As individuals, we may “give up” a food or an activity for Lent. The Church fasts even at liturgy: we omit the Gloria and the singing of the “Alleluia”. In this spirit of fasting, it is our custom at St. Ferdinand to seal the baptismal font as a reminder of the simplification called for during the season. It further points us to Easter, when we all renew our baptismal promises and are sprinkled with “baptismal water” blessed a the most important liturgy of the Church’s year, the Easter Vigil. We, therefore, encourage parents who seek the baptism of their infant in the upcoming months to plan for a celebration after Easter Sunday, rather than during Lent. There is no better time to celebrate Baptism than within the Easter Season. To schedule a Baptism, please call the Parish Office at 622-5900. Page Seven Ninth Ordinary Sunday BRING A BOTTLE HOME! FILL IT WITH YOUR CHANGE! BRING IT BACK TO CHURCH! HELP SAVE LIVES! Beginning the weekend of March 12 and 13 our parish will be participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, material and monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God’s Grace, The Women’s Centers have saved over 33,000 babies—and their mothers—from abortion since opening in 1984. Please take a Baby Bottle home with you after Mass on March 12 or 13, fill it with your spare change, and return it the weekend of March 26 and 27. This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women’s Centers. Thank you for helping defend life. Please remember to keep all pro-life activities in your prayers! March 6, 2011 Ninth Ordinary Sunday Build Your House on Rock M oses and the evangelist Matthew lived thousands of years apart, yet their message to God’s people in today’s readings is remarkably the same: listen to the word of God, live by those words, and you’re on unshakable ground. These continue to be wise words for us almost 2,000 years later. The two parts of that teaching are 1) reading the word of God and 2) allowing it to seep into everyday actions. This is how the words of Scripture become more than lines of text in an unopened book. If you haven’t read a Bible in a long time, try these simple suggestions: Do check to see if you have a Catholic Bible and preferably the New American translation. The readings proclaimed at Mass come from this translation and the words and phrasing will sound familiar to you. Don’t start on page one of Genesis and expect to read the Bible page by page to the end of Revelations. This works for a novel, but the Bible is more like a library of books, each with their own story and purpose. Do choose one of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) as your first experience of reading a book of the Bible. As you know more about the life and teachings of Jesus the rest of the Bible will be more meaningful. Don’t hurry! While one Gospel could be read easily in an evening, you’re looking for transformation rather than completion of an assignment. Do read slowly and prayerfully, spending time with each verse. Consider spending a few minutes each day during the Season of Lent to read just one Gospel. As you read, pay attention to words or sentences that strike you as interesting or fill you with emotion, then close the book and sit in silence. This is God speaking to you. Enjoy the conversation! W Kościele pierwszych wieków biskup naznaczał w ten sposób jedynie tych, którzy czynili publiczną pokutę i aż do Wielkiego Czwartku byli wyłączeni ze wspólnoty. Każdy wers czytaj powoli i modlitewnie. Centrum Kobiet służy doradą, pomocą i modlitwą. March 6, 2011 Ninth Ordinary Sunday Page Thirteen ON THE HOUSE THAT CHARLES BUILT, GOOD STOCK, AND STRONG FOUNDATIONS Copyright 2011 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected]) Decades ago, I met a guy named Charles from Tennessee. He died years later, but I think of him now as I consider today’s Gospel passage. My company wanted to buy product from Charles--he sold those little glass jars of diced red peppers--so I actually met him on a business trip to his pimiento cannery. I turned the plant down initially because of some housekeeping issues, but Charles said he’d address the problems, and he did. I remember the man’s house, though, way more than his factory, for he had built the home himself, and it was perfect. I even wrote a poem about it and sent it to Charles later on. He said he liked the verse, but the words didn’t do the place justice. Charles built the house on a wooded tract of land between Nashville and Knoxville. First he cleared the trees from the road back to the actual construction site. Then, using much of his own lumber and stones found in the area, he built his home. I told Charles that were I ever dropped in the middle of the forest, I’d die, whereas were he ever dropped in the middle of the forest--and essentially, he was--he would just build a house and stay a while. Charles said it wasn’t always smooth sailing, however, explaining that early on, when the concrete foundation he’d poured a few days earlier totally collapsed, he sat at the job site all alone and cried. In houses and in life, a good foundation is everything. My folks always told me that I came from good stock. I didn’t even know what they meant initially, but with time, the meaning became apparent. Whenever I did anything worthwhile, Mom or Dad gave me the good stock speech. Put differently, of course, they had given me a good foundation, a foundation which now, on my best days, I honor them with. In “Forever Young,” Joan Baez sings, “May you have a strong foundation, when the winds of changes shift.” Come the storm, we all need something to ground us, to anchor us, to keep us from just blowing in the wind. A good foundation does all of these things. And sometimes, as Carl Sandburg notes in “Prayers of Steel,” we need a good foundation to raze other foundations: “Lay me on an anvil, O God/ Beat me and hammer me into a crowbar/ Let me pry loose old walls/ Let me lift and loosen old foundations.” Proposing a Kingdom built on love, Jesus challenged the foundations of his time, just as he challenges us now to do the same. But per today’s Gospel, he doesn’t want people who just call out, “Lord, Lord!” He wants doers who do the Father’s will. “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock,” Jesus says, adding that when weather comes, the house remains standing, for “…it had been set solidly on rock.” I don’t know if the house that Charles built is still standing, but in my memory it will always be so. And our own houses will always be standing, too. As God’s children, we come from the ultimate stock, after all, and in Jesus the Christ, our foundation is forever secure.
