September 22, 2013 25th Ordinary Sunday Remember in Prayer As members of the parish faith community, it is our respon‐ sibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. The number of good things we can do far exceeds the time avail‐ able to accomplish them. Some things are better than good, and these are the things that should command priority attention in our lives. Jesus taught this principle in the home of Martha. While she was “cumbered about much serving” (Luke 10:40), her sister, Mary, “sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word”. As we consider various choices, we should remember that it is not enough that something is good. Other choices are better, and still others are best. Even though a particular choice is more costly, its far greater value may make it the best choice of all. Some of our most important choices concern family activities. Many breadwinners worry that their occupa‐ tions leave too little time for their families. There is no easy formula for that contest of priorities. In choosing how we spend time as a family, we should be careful not to exhaust our available time on things that are merely good and leave little time for that which is better or best. A friend took his young family on a series of summer vacation trips, including visits to memorable historic sites. At the end of the summer he asked his teenage son which of these good summer activities he enjoyed most. The father learned from the reply, and so did those he told of it. “The thing I liked best this summer,” the boy replied, “was the night you and I laid on the lawn and looked at the stars and talked.” Super family activities may be good for children, but they are not always better than one‐on‐ one time with a loving parent. The amount of children‐and‐parent time absorbed in the good activities of private lessons, team sports, and other school and club activities also needs to be care‐ fully regulated. Otherwise, children will be oversched‐ uled, and parents will be frazzled and frustrated. Par‐ ents should act to preserve time for family prayer, family scripture study, family home evening, and the other precious togetherness and individual one‐on‐one time that binds a family together and fixes children’s values on things of eternal worth. Parents should teach gospel priorities through what they do with their children. Family experts have warned against what they call “the overscheduling of children.” In the last generation children are far busier and families spend far less time together. Among many measures of this disturbing trend are the reports that structured sports time has doubled, but children’s free time has declined by 12 hours per week, and unstructured outdoor activities have fallen by 50 percent. The number of those who report that their “whole family usually eats dinner together” has declined 33 percent. This is most concerning because the time a family spends together “eating meals at home [is] the strongest predictor of children’s academic achievement and psy‐ chological adjustment.” Family mealtimes have also been shown to be a strong bulwark against children’s smoking, drinking, or using drugs. There is inspired wisdom in this advice to parents: what your children really want for dinner is you. Some uses of individual and family time are better, and others are best. We have to forego some good things in order to choose others that are better or best because they develop faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and strengthen our families. Reynolds ([email protected]) So I just finished reading Mathew Kelly’s book The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic. A friend loaned me her copy. She said she thought I’d enjoy it. She was right. I’ve read Kelly before, and a favorite Kelly theme‐‐the notion that all of us should strive to be‐ come the best possible persons we are called to be‐‐runs through‐ out this book just as I’ve seen it in some of his other works. In fact, Matthew Kelly is the inspiration behind the small sticky note tacked to my computer monitor at work. All it says is “Point B.” It’s where I’m trying to get to. My best self. I haven’t made it yet, but life’s a journey, you know? Anyway, in Dynamic Catholic, Kelly determines through his re‐ search that only a very small percentage (just under 7%) of regis‐ tered Catholics account for 80% of the volunteer hours in a parish and for 80% of the parish’s financial contributions. Additionally, there’s an 80%+ overlap between these two groups. Who are these people, and what do they have in common? I don’t think I’m spill‐ ing too many beans if I give you Kelly’s high‐level view. These folks have a daily commitment to prayer, they are continuous learners, they are generous, and they evangelize the love of God to others. The third point‐‐generosity‐‐comes to mind as I consider today’s readings. The message Jesus delivers is familiar to all of us. “No servant can serve two masters,” he says. “He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon.” Where our hearts are, there will our treasures be. Or something like that. And I love the first reading about unscrupulous merchants who rob from God and the poor to profit themselves. As Amos tells us, “The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Never will I forget a thing they have done.” Scripture tells us that God loves a cheerful giver, and giving in Church‐talk means being generous with our time, talents, and re‐ sources. So…how are we doing? When I was a kid, my mom showed me the logbook of her Sunday contributions. She tracked them. Religiously. In truth, I found it a bit boastful of her, but fifty years later, along comes Matthew Kelly, and after asking his read‐ ers to take a self‐assessment quiz on the generosity front, he says this about keeping track of our giving‐ness: “Measurement creates awareness, awareness leads to intentionality, and intentionality drives behavior.” So maybe Mom wasn’t being boastful after all. Maybe she was keeping track of the dollars to build awareness, which led to her intentionality, which drove her behavior. Or maybe she was just trying to teach her son something about generosity that he could‐ n’t grasp at the time. “Mammon,” as I understand the term, en‐ compasses money, property, and possessions. How much is enough? How much is too much? In his chapter on generosity, Kelly quotes Leo XIII: “Once necessity and propriety are taken care of, everything else belongs to the poor.” Kelly quotes Fulton Sheen, too: “Never measure your generosity by what you give, but rather by what you have left.” Hmmmm… St. Ferdinand Parish Support Staff Mrs. Dorota Gołda, Parish Secretary Sr. Bernadetta Gościniak, Administrative Assistant Ms. Elizabeth Ceisel-Mikowska, Bulletin Editor Mr. Kamil Duda, Website Designer/Editor Liturgical Bro.
