Remember in Prayer
Our Stewardship
of Treasure
As members of the parish faith community, it is our
responsibility to remember both in concrete and
spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each
week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn,
remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings.
We experience many blessings because of their remembering
us. And so...please remember in your prayers:

A Quick Reflec on On Marriage.
Jonathan Doyle
In his culture changing book Love and Responsibility,
John Paul II said that a young man is never more vulnerable than when he is on his knees asking a young
woman to marry him. If you think about that moment
there is so much taking place. With a single word of a
single syllable, his en re future hangs in the balance.
‘Yes’ or ‘No’. The en re path of his life stretches out
before him in a moment. He is at the mercy of another
human person’s radical freedom to choose.
Ge ng down to it.
Let’s get down to it. Marriage is about the Trinity. It is
about bringing into the world the witness of the eternal, stable, perfect Trinity. Just as the Trinity is a community of persons whose perfect love overflows in
abundant life that holds the very universe in being, so
is marriage a community of persons that, when open
to the grace of the sacrament which it reveals, becomes a life giving community of love that sustains the
socie es in which it flourishes. Even more simply; no
marriage, no culture.
Marriage is a voca on because the root of that word
vocare means to draw forth from within. Marriage
calls us out of our terrible isola on and selfishness. It
draws forth the life of grace from within if we will but
slowly and humbly mirror the pa ern of Christ himself, who came to serve and not to be served. As one
friend, recently said to me in an email, “Marriage is a
race to be the first loser.”
Christ poured himself out on Calvary. My wife and I are
called to pour ourselves out daily in love and service
for each other and our children. And if I have learned one thing so far in twelve years it is that I cannot do this if my inner life is
not hidden in Christ and in the heart of the Church. The sacraments bring Christ to me and Christ is slowly and pa ently making
me the husband and father I could never have been by willpower alone.
Witness changes the world.
It was the witness of Chris an marriages and families that arguably had the single greatest impact on Imperial Rome. At the
me of Christ there was massive issues with divorce, infan cide, immorality and social breakdown. Sounds like the pages of any
paper you could pick up today. However, in many ways it was the witness of Chris an marriage and family life that transformed
the Roman Empire.
God is the God of small things. He is the God of the mustard seed. A single marriage, lived under grace, sustained by the sacraments, embedded in the Church, can change the neighbors, the neighborhood, the na on. The grace is always there. All we
have to do is cooperate.

God is the Giver of Every Good Gi
Principles of Stewardship
Stewardship is based on the spiritual principles of the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus. It is a way of thanking God for
all the blessing God has given us by returning to God a por on of our me, talent, and treasure. Stewardship is based on our
need to give back to God our of gra tude, not on the Church’s need to receive. It is based on the premise that all that we have
and all that we are comes from God and, as a way of thanking God for all our blessings, we return a por on of the me, talent,
and treasure that has been allo ed to us Please con nue to give prayerful thought to your commitment of me talent and
treasure to the Church and community.
From March 2015, St. Ferdinand set up an online giving pla orm which allows our parishioners and
guests to make an "e-dona on" which can be deducted from any type of account (checking, saving,
credit). You can set up online giving either as a one- me dona on (guest dona on), or set up an online
account which will can be connected with your parish ID number where you can manage, and record
your dona ons. The online giving is not only easy, it's also safe and secure. This op on helps individuals
and families remain faithful in their giving even when they are out of town or unable to a end a
weekend service.
Go to the St. Ferdinand Parish website at www.s erdinandchurch.com and click on the link to Online Giving, follow the simple
steps to set up your account and make payments.
If you do not have internet access, please call the parish office at 773.622.5900 ext. 222 or 225

Z przyjemnością pragniemy poinformować naszych parafian i tych którzy korzystają z posługi
duszpasterskiej w naszym kościele, iż od marca 2015 nasza parafia założyła pla ormę "Ez Giving Online"
firmy Compuwerx, dzięki której można składać ofiarę droga elektroniczna. Aby się zarejstrować prosimy
wejść na stronę Parafii św. Ferdynanda www.s erdinandchurch.com i wybrać link Online Giving,
Mszy świętej przebywając poza miejscem zamieszkania, a chcą pozostać wiernymi ofiarodawcami wspierającymi swoją
wspólnotę parafialną.

ON THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT, A GUY NAMED KEN, AND LENT
Copyright 2015 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])
A long-term employee at my workplace died suddenly last week.
Ken Guy had been at Topco for 41 years when he re red a couple of
years back. At that me, Topco itself was pushing 70 years old, and
Ken was 67 when he passed away. As our president put it in a
shared le er to Ken’s wife Jennifer, Ken was the face of Topco. I
started in 1978, so I grew up there as well, and Ken and I occasionally traveled to our member-owners to tell the Topco story. He gave
the overview; I did the Quality Assurance por on. Ken o en began
with the same message, and I can hear him saying it even now: “The
only trouble with drawing a en on to yourself is…you draw a enon to yourself.”
Like me, Ken was proud to speak of our Topco work. I learned at
the memorial service, however, that this work barely had a place in
Ken’s away-from-work conversa ons. Perhaps this is why I didn’t
hear “Topco” men oned once. I heard from so many though--and
over and over--about what a good and kind man Ken was. I knew
that. Before the service, I bumped into a friend I hadn’t seen in decades. Anne started Topco in 1978 too, and we laughed much about
the old days. Back then, we used to “go on tour” around the building to visit colleagues, and because Ken was such a good and kind
man, he was a usual stop. And even though he was a big shot, he
never turned us away.
Music was a major part of Ken’s life. In fact, the website that the
family put together in his honor carries this headline: Life is a song.
Love is the music. I didn’t know the depth of Ken’s musical immer-
sion un l the memorial service, but when I took guitar classes years
ago at Chicago’s Old Town School, I learned through some work
colleagues that Ken was connected with the place and that he was
an accomplished guitarist. I had wri en a song for my wife back
then but at that point, I didn’t know which chords went with the
melody in my head. I asked Ken if he’d help me. He said sure, so I
gave him the lyrics and a tape of me singing. He gave me the
chords. His C’s and G’s are s ll on my music stand, and looking at
them now brings both smiles and tears.
Which is precisely how the memorial service--a thanks-giving for
Ken’s life--played out. Smiles and tears all night long. Per Jennifer
on the website, “…the most generous, loving man I have ever
known has le us.” Per son Mac that night, referencing his father’s
ways, “Make sure those that you love know that you love them.”
And per daughter Suzanne, “Let’s all live with a li le more Ken Guy
in our lives.” Hmmmm… Lent’s half over. Old school Catholics o en
give things up for the season. New school Catholics o en say they
will strive to be be er persons, but the details go lacking. Well, one
of the Scripture readings at the service has the details: “The fruit of
the Spirit is love, joy, peace, pa ence, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” Very Ken Guy-esque. As we discussed in this space weeks ago, we all want to have a good Lent,
and now Suzanne--without even knowing it--has given us the path.
Yeah. Let’s all just put a li le more Ken Guy in our lives.
