As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. And so...please remember in your prayers: Irene Rowe Mary Ayello Florence Magro Anthony R. Almighty God, stretch forth Your mighty arm to strengthen and protect the men and women of our Armed Forces. As they face the myriad of challenges and decisions that each day is destined to bring, may they be anchored by their faith, protected by Your presence and comforted by the knowledge that they are loved by You and by this community of faith. Grant that, meeting dan‐
ger with courage, and all occasions with discipline loyalty, they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. SPC Jeffrey Foerster Page Three

ence. As we celebrate let us remember to pray that God will strengthen and bless America and make our nation a haven of liberty and justice for all — born and unborn. On April 19, 1775, American minutemen faced English sol‐
diers on the village green in Lexington, Massachusetts. Someone — no one to this day knows who — fired a shot, and a battle followed which marked the beginning of the American Revolution. After the Battle of Lexington, the desire of Americans for complete independence from England grew stronger. Less than a month after that battle, the Second Continental Con‐
gress met in Philadelphia. On July 4, 1776, the Congress issued a Declaration of Independence, announcing "that these united colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states." For a time it seemed to some that the fight for independ‐
ence was a hopeless struggle, but an important American victory at Saratoga marked a turning point in the war. After that victory the Americans gained a strong ally, France. With the help of France, the Americans went on to win a final victory over the English at Yorktown. The English Par‐
liament then decided to make peace and accept American independence. With independence won, the thirteen states set out to form a new nation. There were strong differences among the states, but Americans came to understand the need for unity, and devised a new plan for government—the Consti‐
tution. The new government, under the Constitution, was faced with many problems, both at home and abroad. How‐
ever it found ways to solve these problems, and the United States began to grow rapidly. Excerpted from American History, published by Laidlaw Brothers. MASS SCHEDULE FOR THE 4TH OF JULY There will be one morning Mass only at 9:00 a.m. (No Masses at 8:00AM and 12:00 noon) First Friday Mass in Polish at 7:00PM OFFICE SCHEDULE THE PARISH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED ON FRIDAY July 4 and SATURDAY July 5. HAPPY HOLIDAY! Page Four ‘Under God’ Our American Legacy The Knights of Columbus celebrates the 60th Anniversary of a historic amendment to the Pledge of Allegiance. On a wintry morning, January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy delivered his inaugural presidential address in which he fa‐
mously challenged his fellow Americans to “ask not what your country can do for you‐ask what you can do for your coun‐
try.” But much earlier in the oration, President Kennedy, a Fourth Degree Knight, drew attention to a theme that has been threaded throughout American history from the outset. In the second paragraph, he re‐
minded the nation that “the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God” In other words, Kennedy underscored the idea of a nation “under God.” For most of us who grew up in the United States, we heard and said those words at the beginning of every school day. June marks the 60th anniversary of the addition of “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance. And the Knights of Colum‐
bus, who played a pivotal role in the addition of those two words, continue today to defend and preserve them from forces that seek to remove them. Less than three days before Kennedy’s iconic speech, his predecessor, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, had likewise expressed the primacy of God over government in his presi‐
dential farewell address: “You and I, my fellow citizens, need to be strong in our faith that all nations, under God, will reach the goal of peace and justice.” Eisenhower was fond of the phrase “under God,” for on Flag Day, June 14, 1954, he signed into law a resolution passed by Congress that amended the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance. Later that year, he wrote a letter to the Knights for their efforts in this change. “A portion of this article appearing in Columbia Magazine of June 2014 and is reprinted with permission of the Knights of Columbus, New Haven, CT” Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pas‐
tor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishion‐
ers, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity. The Knights was formed to render financial aid to mem‐
bers and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their fami‐
lies through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works. The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 14,000 councils and 1.8 million members. Visit www.kofc.org for more information. Page Five SS. Peter & Paul Sunday Announcing Year of the Sacraments (July 2014 ‐ July 2015) In Archdiocese of Chicago The final year will focus on fostering reflection by Catholics on the purpose and meaning of all of the sacraments, with particular attention to Eucharist and Reconciliation. The theme for Year IV is: The Year of Sacraments: Pope Francis’ Vision of Healing and Communion. The fourth year will focus on the sacraments with a particular emphasis on the sacraments of healing and communion, that is, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Marriage, and Holy Orders. Pope Francis has summoned the Church to be a Church of mercy and so be an evangelizing presence in the world. As we re‐
claim the healing and reconciling power of the sacraments, we also discover our own responsibility to be sources of healing and communion in the world. In that sense, we un‐
derstand the Church herself “in the manner of a sacrament of the unity of all humanity in God.” (Lumen gentium, n. 1)
Throughout the whole year once again a series of articles “One Word at a Time” will be featured to refresh our knowledge about the sacraments, how do we understand them and how we explain them. COR’S CORNER — Please remember our Food Pantry when you shop this weekend The foods we give out (all non‐perishable), cereals, rice, soups, canned vegetables and meats, tuna fish, crackers, coffee, tea, jello and puddings (the kinds to cook and ones in individual containers), canned fruits, tomato sauce and pasta. We have a freezer now and wel‐
come any frozen foods. But they can't be left in church and chapel, they must be brought to the COR office at the Convent on Mondays (the office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30p.m.). People ask for toilet tissue, paper towels, shampoo and laundry and bar soap and sugar.....which when we have any, we gladly give out. On the first Saturday and Sunday of the month (July 5/6) please drop the purchased items when you come to the church. Of course, any time we are grateful to receive food donations. This is just to let you know, what the Food Pantry needs to give out to people who come for help. Our Food Pantry is open every Monday from 10:00‐11:00am. Always, thank you for all your sharing and thoughtfulness. God bless you. June 29, 2014 INTERNATIONAL STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM Saint Patrick High School and Notre Dame High School for Girls have more international students coming from China in August 2014. ferent cultures and languages and learn from each other. Our Chinese students are selected excellent students from China. They will be responsible for all their own expenses, such as tuition, housing, and other personal expenses. The host family will receive compensation for all expenses to host each student. We are asking for your participation and support if your fam‐
ily is interested in hosting a Chinese student. Please feel free to contact Wenjie Cosentino, Chinese Language Teacher by email: [email protected] or phone: 773 685 1351. Peter & Paul Sunday NIGHTFEVER ‐ JULY 19, 2014 – ST. ALPHONSUS St. Alphonsus Parish, located at 1429 W. Wellington in Chicago, will be hosting the next Nightfever, starting with Mass at 7:30 pm and continuing through the night. Last year Nightfever was brought to Chicago for the first time. Holy Name Cathedral was opened from 9pm to mid‐
night. With the Eucharist exposed on the altar, priests avail‐
able to talk or hear confessions, and quiet music playing, young adults stood on the streets around the Cathedral and invited people inside to simply light a candle before going on their way for the evening. Everyone is welcome to stay for as long or as short as they like, and to come and go as they please. Over 400 people came into the Cathedral to pray. Some lit a candle and left, others stayed for over an hour. Some received the sacrament of reconciliation for the first time in decades! Hearts were touched, healed, and transformed. The idea behind Nightfever is simple: Open the church, invite people in, and let Christ work. And the effect is remarkable. Nightfever is an outstanding experience of Christ’s love for all involved. Informacja i rezerwacje: Helena Lesak 773‐387‐2337 29 CZERWCA—UROCZYSTOŚĆ ŚWIĘTYCH APOSTOŁÓW PIOTRA I PAWŁA Kościół już od roku 258 obchodził święto obu Apostołów św. Piotra i św.
Piotra. Po edykcie cesarza Konstantyna Wielkiego (313) ciało św. Piotra przeniesiono do Watykanu, a ciało św. Pawła na miejsce jego męczeństwa, gdzie cesarz wystawił ku jego czci bazylikę pod wezwaniem św. Pawła. June 29, 2014 SS. & PAUL, AND BOB KRUPP
Copyright 2014 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected]) Which is not to say that Robert Mathias Krupp, who died suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack at the age of 60 on Father’s Day, is a saint just yet, but if saints are, as I read once, just people in heaven‐‐canonized or not‐‐who lived lives of great charity and heroic virtues, then Bob is destined for the honor. Maybe he’s in heaven already. Or maybe he’ll be there next week. Or next year. Or whenever. But he’s going north, this guy, no question. My daily prayer for him‐‐as it is for all my friends and family who’ve moved into the next room‐‐is that today be the day. “Father, please embrace in Paradise this day Mom and Dad, Tina, Helen, Peggy, Shirley, Dave, Joe, Stanley, Coach…” I call him Coach because he helped me with the grade school track and cross‐country teams years ago when our children ran for the St. Constance Eagles. I asked his assistance because I knew he was a fitness buff, and he was quick to say yes. He often spoke of running the Chicago Marathon back then, but a lot of guys over the years have expressed interest to me in doing this, and most of them never followed though. In truth, I didn’t think Bob would either. But I realized he was serious not long after when I came upon him on the streets at 4:30 one morning logging his miles. “Coach?” I said in the darkness. Years later, we went the 26.2 together. Bob Krupp. Bib 27575. Marathoner. At the funeral, Fr. Ted, our current pastor, said that Bob helped on the finance committee for years. Fr. Tom, our previous pastor, said that Bob came to Constance and got involved at once (“every pastor’s dream parishioner…”). A friend of the family, Fr. Bill, and the Chicago Fire Department’s chaplain both said Bob embraced his faith. All the priests spoke of how much Bob liked to help people, and a long‐time friend later said that it was Bob’s humanitarian spirit that led him to join the fire department‐‐
quite a change from his accountancy gig‐‐in 1999. I went to lunch with Bob on the occasion of his CFD induction. Other than when he spoke of his family, I never saw him prouder. Today we celebrate the Solemnity of SS. Peter and Paul, two unlikely candidates for sainthood when Peter was working his nets and Paul was persecuting the early disciples. Upon meeting the Christ, though, they were changed individuals, and millenniums later, we still look to them for inspiration. Well, now I look to my friend in sort of the same way. Bob was boisterous, gregarious, curmudgeonly at times. But he loved God and family. To the death. In every good sense of the term, he lived large, and post‐funeral, my wife said that he “was just a guy named Bob who had an amazing life.” Exactly. And another friend reminded us that when asked how he was doing, Bob often said, “Fantastic. And getting better.” Since Bob was a man of great charity and heroic virtue (he put out fires…), maybe he’s in heaven already. Or maybe he’ll be there next week. Or next year. Or whenever. But he’s going north, like I said. So when he told us all those times that he was fantastic, and getting better, his insight was spot‐on. Thanks, Coach. See you on the flipside. St. Ferdinand Parish
