SUNDAY MASS ON TELEVISION Sunday Mornings at 9:30 a.m. on WGN‐TV 9 Sunday Mass at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls — the “Parish of the Airways” is now seen on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m., on WGN‐TV, Channel 9, in Chicago. Sunday Mass at Mercy Home, recorded at Mercy Home for Boys & Girls in the Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, has been a source of spiritual nourishment since 1992 for those unable to leave their homes because of age or ailment to attend Mass. June 30, 2013 13th Ordinary Sunday Page Four Did you know…  Mass takes its name from the final words of the celebration, the dismissal. “Ite, missa est.” (“Go forth, the Mass is ended.”)  Pope Benedict XVI believes the abrupt ending to Mass is modeled after Luke 24, where Jesus meets with the disciples after meeting the men on the road to Emmaus. The men, not recognizing him as Christ, invited him to eat with them. It was only after he “took bread, broke it, and gave it to them” that they realized who he was. (Luke 24:30) “Then he vanished from their sight, and they were left to tell the good news to their fellow disciples. They ‘set out at once’ for Jerusalem (Luke 24:33).” The Mass ends as it begins: with the Sign of the Cross. Read Luke 24 and the scene described above, and consider our own similarities with the disciples. Do we not often enter into Mass distracted by our own concerns and burdens, only to be greeted by Christ in the Eucharist? Are we not refreshed by his presence, and then sent—almost abruptly, but no less purpose‐
fully—to tell the world of his love and forgiveness? Cardinal Wuerl says this: “What we receive in Mass we must now take into the world. The challenging thing about Christian faith is that we cannot hold on to it unless we give it away—
unless we share it with others. We have received Christ, and he as mingled his flesh with ours. His blood courses through us and gives life to our bod‐
ies—gives his life to our bodies! We become his face and voice and hands and feet as we walk out into the crowded sidewalks, as we return to our homes and neighborhoods, and we report for another workday.” May the grace and peace of Christ be with you! Go forth, the Mass is ended. With this article we conclude the Year of Sunday Mass. Starting July 1 we will focus on Year of Strong Catholic Parents (July 2013 ‐ July 2014). ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO STATEMENT FROM THE CATHOLIC STATEMENT OF FRANCIS CARDINAL GEORGE, O.M.I. REGARDING SUPREME COURT DECISIONS ON MARRIAGE June 26, 2013 This morning, in the guise of technical legal language, the United States Supreme Court advanced the project of mak‐
ing marriage in the United States a genderless institution. Since women and men are not interchangeable, the Court's action is illogical and pretentious. The Court abuses its own authority when it permits civil law to alter the definition of marriage, which is a natural institution. What is truly at stake in these decisions is not the right of adults to love whom they please, but rather the right of children to have both a mother and a father. CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS Today's decisions also bring us one step closer to the day when those who continue to distinguish between genuine marital unions and same‐sex arrangements will be regarded as "bigots." We have already seen the negative result of gender‐free unions on Catholic social services here in Illinois and other states. We can all be grateful that the Court did not create a new "right" to same‐sex marriage, allowing Illinois and other states to continue to acknowledge in law what nature and nature's God already tell us: that marriage is the union of one man and one woman for the sake of family. ON U.S. SUPREME COURT RULING ON DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE ACT CHICAGO, June 26, 2013 ‐‐ The Catholic Conference of Illinois regrets the U.S. Supreme Court’s wrong decision to invalidate the Defense of Marriage Act. Marriage comes to us through God’s nature as the union of one man and one woman. The ruling, however, does not mandate a redefinition of marriage across the nation, so the citizens of Illinois can still preserve marriage by telling their state lawmakers to honor the natural truth of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The Catholic Church in Illinois and across the world will continue to promote this truth. The Catholic Conference of Illinois will work to preserve marriage and stress the disturbing lack of religious free‐
dom protections included in Illinois’ legislative efforts to redefine marriage. The bill before the Illinois legislature lacks even the minimal protections found in other state laws authorizing the redefinition of marriage, including New York, Minnesota, Rhode Island and Connecticut. ###

It is not always easy to find the right diocesan or parish websites. Mass Times makes it much easier to search for a Mass by presenting all the possibilities in a geographical area on one page. It provides worship times, church locations, contact information, website links and maps. COR’S CORNER — The Food Pantry is open on Mondays from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Convent. The foods we give out(all non‐
perishable), cereals, rice, soups, canned vegetables and meats, tuna fish, crackers, coffee, tea, jello and puddings (the kinds to cook and ones in individual containers), canned fruits, tomato sauce and pasta. We have a freezer now and welcome any frozen foods. But they can't be left in Church and Chapel, they must be brought to the COR office at the Con‐
vent on Mondays (the office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30p.m.). People ask for toilet tissue, paper towels, shampoo and laundry and bar soap and sugar.....which when we have any, we gladly give out. Independence Day – Dzień Niepodległości USA ARISE CHICAGO Święto, które zostało ustanowione na pamiątkę ogłoszenia Deklaracji Niepodległości Stanów Zjednoczonych 4 lipca 1776 roku w Filadelfii, podczas Drugiego Kongresu Kontynentalnego. Dzień ten uważa się za datę powstania Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki Północnej. Deklaracja niepodległości – akt prawny uzasadniający prawo Trzynastu Kolonii brytyjskich w Ameryce Północnej do wolności i niezależności od króla Wielkiej Brytanii, Jerzego III. Deklaracja głosiła prawo do ustanawiania wszelkich aktów państwowych, wypowiadania wojny oraz zawierania pokoju przez dawne kolonie angielskie w Ameryce Północnej. Była pierwszym oficjalnym oświadczeniem na temat tego, czym powinien być rząd. Miała charakter uniwersalny, była czymś więcej niż prywatnym przesłaniem skierowanym do Wielkiej Brytanii, był to apel do całej ludzkości. Sygnatariusze Deklaracji Niepodległości: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams i Benjamin Franklin zostali nazwani przez kolonistów ojcami‐
założycielami. Nieoficjalnie Dzień Niepodległości obchodzono już od 1777 roku. W 1870 roku Kongres Stanów Zjednoczonych oficjalnie ustanowił 4 lipca dniem wolnym od pracy bez wynagrodzenia dla urzędników federalnych. W 1931 roku zmieniono prawo, przyznając im za ten dzień uposażenie. Należy wspomnieć, że Polacy – Kazimierz Pułaski i Tadeusz Kościuszko zapisali się na trwałe na kartach historii walcząc o niepodległość Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki. Co roku 4 lipca Ameryka hucznie świętuje swój Dzień Niepodległości. Organizowane są koncerty, parady, festyny, mecze baseballowe. Tego dnia politycy i urzędnicy państwowi wygłaszają przemówienia o tematyce patriotycznej. 4 lipca w całych Stanach Zjednoczonych odbędą się również uroczystości nadania obywatelstwa tysiącom imigrantów. Większość Amerykanów spędzi Święto Niepodległości na spotkaniach z rodziną, przyjaciółmi i na wspólnym grillowaniu. Po zmierzchu w wielu amerykańskich miastach odbędą się pokazy sztucznych ogni. There will be parades, fireworks, and certainly grand speeches in venues large and small, not to mention cookouts and lemonade. I’m not the best history buff in town, but I know that we cele‐
brate the 4th in commemoration of the day over two hundred years ago when dissatisfied colonists declared their independ‐
ence from England. Ostensibly, the Declaration of Independence was the beginning of the Revolutionary War, and in part, it had this to say about liberty: “We hold these truths to be self‐evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness…” But what does liberty mean? As Joplin sang it in Me and Bobby McGee, “Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose.” It’s one of those great rock’n roll lyrics that says everything and nothing at the same time. I get its gist given the song’s mes‐
sage, but when I really want to ponder freedom, I turn to Whit‐
man: “The shallow…consider liberty a release from all law, from every constraint. The wise see it, on the contrary, the potent Law of Laws, namely, the fusion and combination of the conscious will, or partial individual law, with the universal, eternal, uncon‐
scious ones which run through all Time, pervade history, prove immortality, give moral purpose to the entire objective world, and the last dignity to human life.” Now that’s what I’m talking about! The American journalist George Will has a similar take on free‐
dom, but by my reading, he couches it more directly in the con‐
text of faith. Per Will in Statecraft as Soulcraft, “Freedom is not only the absence of external restraints. It also is the absence of irresistible internal compulsions, unmanageable passions, and uncensorable appetites. From the need to resist, manage, and censor the passions there flows the need to do so in the interest of some ends rather than others. Hence freedom requires reflec‐
tive choice about the ends of life.” Now consider the Apostle Paul’s insight on freedom in today’s second reading: “Brothers and sisters: For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.” The slavery to which Paul refers, of course, is sin. To quote the villainess Ursula in Disney’s The Little Mermaid when Ariel is try‐
ing to decide if she want to give away her voice to gain her legs, “Life’s full of tough choices, isn’t it?” With knowledge of the faith, we can choose to embrace Christ’s teachings and his example of love, or to turn away from it to be enslaved by all the lusts the world and our very humanity throw at us. Today’s Gospel is trou‐
bling for me, especially when Christ chides a potential follower because the man first wanted to go home to bury his father. I don’t always make the right choices. Perhaps none of us do. But all we can do is the best we can. We have the freedom for it. May God give us the strength. St. Ferdinand Parish

BAPTISM:
For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first
child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each
month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of
each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the
sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday
each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the
12:30PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on
the first Saturday of the month at 6:00PM and on the third Sunday of
the month at the 3:00PM Mass. Please call the rectory to register at

For Adults: Classes are taught through the Rite of Christian Initiation
