An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons: in thanksgiving, for the inten ons of another person or as is most common, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died for the souls in purgatory. One must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one’s soul. We find not only the origins of this prac ce da ng to the early Church but we also clearly recognize its importance. Offering Mass for a special Inten on is a long standing tradi on in the Catholic Church. It is usually considered that special graces are obtained for whom the Mass is said. If you would like to have a Mass said for someone, please contact the Parish Office 773-622-5900 ex. 225. We s ll have Masses available for 2015 and now for 2016. You may also request the Sanctuary Light in the name of your loved one living or deceased. November 8, 2015 32nd Ordinary Sunday Remember in Prayer Our Stewardship of Treasure As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Kass, E. Camara H. Syodia; M Syodia J .Zarate, M. Madrano November 8, 2015 32nd Ordinary Sunday Praying for the Dead ByFr.RonaldRolheiser,OMI Why pray for the dead? Does this make any sense? What possible difference can our prayers make to a person once he or she has died? These are valid ques ons. A number of objec ons can be raised against the prac ce of praying for the dead: Do we need to call God to mercy? Does God need to be reminded that the person who died was in fact a decent, warm-hearted, person? God already knows this, is already as merciful as mercy allows, and needs no nudging from us to be understanding and forgiving. Cynically, the objec on might be put this way: If the person is already in heaven he doesn’t need our prayers and if he is in hell, our prayers won’t help anyway! So why pray for the dead? We pray for the dead for the same reason we pray for anything, we feel the need and that is reason enough. Moreover the objec ons raised against praying for the dead are just as easily raised against all prayer of pe on. God already knows everyone one of our desires, everyone of our sins, and all of our good will. So why remind God of these? Because prayer builds us up, changes us, not God. This is the first, though not foremost, reason why we pray for the dead. Prayer is meant to change and console us. We pray for the dead to comfort ourselves, to s r and celebrate our own faith, and assuage our own guilt about our less than perfect rela onship to the one who has died. In praying for the dead we do two things: We highlight our faith in the power of God and we hold up the life of the person who has died so as to let God take care of things, let God wash things clean. That is one of the purposes of a funeral liturgy, to clearly put the dead person and our rela onship to him or her into God’s hands. Page Four But this is not the most important reason why we have funeral liturgies and why we pray for the dead. We pray for the dead because we believe (and this a doctrine, the communion of saints) that we are s ll in vital communion with them. There is, death notwithstanding, s ll a vital flow of life between them and us. Love, presence, and communica on reach even through death. We and they can s ll feel each other, know each other, love each other, console each other, and influence each other. Our lives are s ll joined. Hence we pray for the dead in order to remain in contact with them. Just as we can hold someone’s hand as they are dying, and this can be an immense consola on to them and to us, so too, figura vely but really, we can hold that person’s hand through and beyond death. Perhaps the words and prayer forms we use seem to indicate something else, since they are addressed to God and not directly to the person for whom we are praying. Thus, for example, in praying for the dead we use words like: “Lord, have mercy on her soul!” “Lord, we place her in your hands!” “She loved you in life, radiated your gentleness, Lord, give her peace!” The words are addressed to God because it is in and through God that our communica on with our loved one who is deceased now takes place: God’s bosom is the venue for our communica on, God’s power is what is holding both of us in life, and God’s mercy is what is washing things clean between us. We can of course also talk directly to the person who has died, that too is valid enough within the doctrine of the communion of saints, but given the cri cal place of God’s love, power, and mercy in this situa on, our prayer is generally addressed to God so as to highlight that it is within the heart of God that we have contact with our loved ones who are deceased. Hence, our prayers for the dead generally take this par cular form. And classically, within Roman Catholic theology at least, we have believed that our prayers help release this person from purgatory. What’s to be said about this? Purgatory, properly understood, is not a punishment for any imperfec on nor indeed a place dis nct from heaven. The pains of purgatory are the pains of adjus ng to a new life (which includes the pain of le ng go of this one) and the pains of being embraced by perfect love when we ourselves are far from perfect. By praying for the dead, we support them in their pain of adjustment, adjustment to a new life and to living in full light. Purga on eventually leads to ecstasy, but the birth that produces that ecstasy requires first a series of painful deaths. Thus, just as we tried to hold their hands as they died, so now, in praying for loved ones who have died, we con nue to hold their hands, and they ours, beyond the chasm of death itself. Reynolds ([email protected]) I heard a story on the radio the other day of a young man who proposes to a man’s daughter, and of course, the father wants to know about the young man’s plans for the future. I don’t have this verba m, but the father asks the young man a series of ques ons, and to each, the young man replies, “God will provide.” For example, the man asks something like, “What kind of work do you do?” and the young man answers, “I don’t have a job right now, but God will provide.” Later the man’s wife asks her husband how the talk went with the future son-in-law. “Not good,” the man answered. “He doesn’t have any plans, and he thinks I’m God…” In today’s Gospel--the story of the widow’s mite--Jesus cau ons the crowds to be mindful of the scribes: “They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext, recite lengthy prayers…” Then Jesus gathers his disciples a er watching several rich people put large sums of money into the synagogue treasury and a widow put in two small coins. I’m not sure what the value of the coins would be today, but it’s not much. Which is why Jesus tells his disciples, “Amen I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.” I don’t know about you, but I feel both good and bad about this reading. Good in the sense that I don’t think I fit the descrip on of the scribes as Jesus paints them. I haven’t devoured any widows’ houses, a er all, or recited lengthy prayers in the public square. This is really, good, actually, because per Jesus, these scribes “will receive a very severe condemna on.” But I feel bad about the reading in the sense that the widow out-gives me, too, in the context Jesus places her contribu on. When I contribute to my home parish or to the larger Church or to Illinois Special Olympics or to any of the other worthy causes asking me for financial assistance, I don’t exactly contribute all I have, my “whole livelihood.” So where does this leave me? In truth, I’m not sure. There’s something to be said for working hard and saving, certainly. I mean, check out the Book of Proverbs: “The slack hand impoverishes, but the hand of the diligent enriches.” And: “Wealth quickly go en dwindles away, but amassed li le by li le, it grows.” And even: “The rich man’s wealth is his strong city; the ruina on of the lowly is their poverty.” And yet the widow surpasses me--and I suspect many of us--when it comes to giving all she has to God. But I’m not just talking cash. And perhaps this is key to understanding what this reading is really about. Trust in the Lord. Appreciate--daily--that God is God, and we are not. Be thankful. Be generous. Live the Bea tudes we heard last week. Ponder the widow’s mite (is she crazy? or does she have the faith that moves mountains?). Ponder the Na ve American saying, “Wealth is not measured by what you have but by what you’ve given away.” Ponder, also, “God will provide.” St. Ferdinand Parish Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary: Marcia Codak Ladies of St. Anne: Mrs. Violet DelVecchio, President Legion of Mary: Miss Aurora Almeida — President Legion of Mary, Juniors: Mrs. Emma Camara, President Irving Park Catholic Woman’s Club: Mrs. Dolores Schoewe Market Day: Ms. Pat DelBoccio, Coordinator Polish Altar Servers — Fr.
