Onsite Packet - Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association
See you at the next … CENTER Institute for Excellence in Ministry February 2-6, 2015 Asilomar Conference Grounds Pacific Grove, California Dear Colleagues, Welcome to the second UUMA CENTER Institute for Excellence in Ministry! We hope you have arrived full of anticipation and excitement for what we will learn and celebrate together. Two years ago our President, Bill Hamilton-Holway and the UUMA Board welcomed you to our first Institute held at a beautiful seaside setting on the California coastline. This year, as your current and future President, it is our pleasure, on behalf of the UUMA Board, to welcome you to the second Institute at another beautiful setting this time in Florida. In gratitude for the many UUMA leaders, volunteers and staff who have put hours and hours - even years - of time, dedication and dreams into making this week come true, your UUMA Board of Trustees invites you to relax, refresh and renew. The hope, and maybe even prayer, for this week is to be changed. May it be so. We thank you for your commitment to ministry and for living out our UUMA vision, to nurture excellence in ministry through continuing education, collegiality and collaboration. Yours in faith, Rev Bill Hamilton-Holway UUMA President UUMA CENTER Institute for Excellence in Ministry Rev. Linda Olson-Peebles UUMA President Designate 2 January 28-February 1, 2013 UUMA CENTER Institute for Excellence in Ministry 27 January 28-February 1, 2013 FRIDAY MORNING WORSHIP OFFERING RECIPIENTS On Friday morning our offering will be split and given to the UUMA Continuing Education Scholarship Fund and a local organization that is supported by our local congregation. Our recipient this year is the Free Clinic Beacon House in St. Petersburg. We are honored to have Yolanda Giovannetti, the Director of Beacon House, and some graduates of the program join us for breakfast and worship on Friday morning. The UUMA Continuing Education Scholarship Fund was created in 2010 to support those UUMA members for whom attendance at continuing education programs is financially challenging. Almost $20,000 was given to colleagues to assist them in coming to the 2013 Institute but many more colleagues had to stay home because we could not offer larger grants. Our goal is to grow the fund to $50,000 by the 2015 Institute. Your support on Friday and when you return home to your congregations and communities will help us help more colleagues. St. Petersburg Free Clinic, Inc. is a multi-service, independent, not-for-profit human services agency. It has been caring for the unserved and underserved families and individuals facing temporary emergency needs throughout Pinellas County, Florida for over 40 years. Founded in 1970, St. Petersburg Free Clinic began as a single walk-in medical facility that provided basic health care services to people without health insurance and without the means to provide adequate health care for themselves and their families. In subsequent years, as additional needs of the community have been identified, it has expanded its services, becoming a multi-service, multi-site agency to address the need for food, shelter and health care through six programs. Established in 1997, Free Clinic Beacon House provides safe, supportive, transitional shelter to single, homeless men, as they work toward their goal of self-sufficiency. Free Clinic Beacon House provides housing for up to 25 men. Within the same building is the Free Clinic Community Kitchen, which serves dinner six nights per week to anyone in the community who is hungry; 3,500-4,000 meals are prepared each month. Dear UUMA Colleagues, Welcome to St. Pete Beach and the second UUMA CENTER Institute for Excellence in Ministry. We on the CENTER team are delighted you have chosen to be here! We are filled with great anticipation about what is in store for all of us this week: moving and inspiring worship, provocative and insightful seminars, conversations with beloved colleagues, and hopefully some time on the beautiful beach, too. You will see that there is a wealth of opportunities for learning, collegiality and growth available to you this week. We encourage you to take as many of these opportunities as feels right to you—and we also encourage you to take the time and space you need to open yourself to the transformative possibilities of the Institute. No one is required or expected to do everything that is available. Taking time for a conversation with a treasured colleague or walking on the beach—these are as much a part of what might transform you as the seminars or the worship. Be good to yourself this week! We on CENTER as well as our UUMA staff will do our very best to be helpful this week. You will be able to identify us by our very stylish beach hats. We also have two excellent chaplains in place if you feel in need of spiritual counsel and support. We’re working also on continuing to develop our multicultural awareness and right relationship skills in ways that really work for us all– the UUMA’s Committee on Anti-Racism and Multiculturalism has taken the lead on this and are available to help. Please do not hesitate to ask any of us for assistance. As you settle into this beautiful place, we invite you to look through the contents of this packet. You will find a lot of information that will help you have a fulfilling, enjoyable and comfortable time. We wish you a transformative week! Peace, Your CENTER Team— Roger Bertschausen, Colin Bossen, Meghan Cefalu, Jennifer Channin, Alicia Forde, Sarah Gibb Millspaugh, Liz Lerner Maclay, Kent Mattheis, Aaron McEmrys, Don Southworth, Marta Valentin, Cheryl M. Walker A “graduate” of the Beacon House program said: “Not long ago, I found myself homeless. I wasn’t just homeless, I was hopeless. I asked someone else in a similar situation where to turn for help and they mentioned, “Try Beacon House.” I showed up at Beacon House with nothing but the clothes I was wearing and a tattered soul. After a brief meeting with some of the staff members, they welcomed me with open arms. They made sure I received all the various items I needed and fed me a nice, hot meal. After entrance into the program, the caring continued. The level of commitment from the Beacon House staff was astounding. Their continuous focus was always on my self-improvement. I have since moved on and am supporting myself. My heart and life, once without hope, is now full of hope; all due to the help I received at Beacon House.” UUMA CENTER Institute for Excellence in Ministry 26 January 28-February 1, 2013 UUMA CENTER Institute for Excellence in Ministry 3 January 28-February 1, 2013 Dear UUMA Members and Guests, Welcome to St. Pete Beach and the second UUMA CENTER Institute for Excellence in Ministry! In order to provide the best possible experience for all, CENTER and the Committee on Anti-Racism, Oppression and Multiculturalism ask that you read and respect it as you enjoy your time at the Institute. We adhere to the covenant of the UUMA (above) and the guidelines of professional practice. We strive to be in right relationship with one another in our daily interactions. Therefore we acknowledge: 1) We all have something to learn. We want to set and uphold the expectation that we are a learning community, in which well-intentioned mistakes are an inevitable part of the road toward growth 2) As a community, we all have the responsibility to help each other in relationship. We need each other for help in seeing what we can't see on our own. 3) We want to see, trust, and affirm one another's good intentions. We also want to have a process for working through the harm caused when there is a "miss" - when the intentions and the impact are not aligned. This accountability has three parts: to one’s self and idea/image of self/spirit (how do you set your mark? how do you know you have missed it?) to the person/persons who have been wronged Café Luna 6700 Gulf Boulevard 272-360-7500 Seafood, Pizza, Steak, Vegetarian Entrees: $14-27 The Boulevard Grille 7081 Gulf Boulevard 727-623-9995 Steak, Pasta, Pizza Entrees: $8-20 Sandra’s German Restaurant 71155 Gulf Boulevard 727-363-4414 German Entrees: $15-20 Dockside Dave’s Grill 7141 Gulf Boulevard 727-360-4200 Seafood, Sandwiches Entrees: $7-20 Woody’s Waterfront Restaurant 7308 Sunset Way 727-360-9165 Seafood, Sandwiches Entrees: $8-15 Oyster Shucker 650 Corey Avenue 727-363-4464 Burgers, Tacos, Seafood Entrees: $8-15 Sloppy Pelican 677 75th Avenue 727-360-7100 Seafood, Sandwiches, Burgers Entrees: $9-20 Verducci’s Pizzeria Trattoria 7736 Blind Pass Road 727-363-7900 Pizza, Italian Entrees: $10-15 Salty Rim 9254 Blind Pasa Road 727-861-9955 Seafood, Steak, Burgers Entrees: $9-25 Carino’s Ristorante 9524 Blind Pass Road 727-360-8502 Italian Entrees: $12-20 Sea Hags Bar and Grill 9555 Blind Pass Road 727-360-2800 Sandwiches, Pizza, Grill Entrees: $10-20 Agave Restaurant 6400 Gulf Boulevard 727-367-3448 Mexican Entrees: $11-30 UUMA CENTER Institute for Excellence in Ministry 22 January 28-February 1, 2013 to the community as a whole We take collective responsibility to embody the best of ministry. We share responsibility for group dynamics and work in service of our purpose. We are mindful and respect each other by showing up on time and being fully present. We respect one another’s privacy. We are here in service of our faith. And we have fun. UUMA CENTER Institute for Excellence in Ministry 7 January 28-February 1, 2013 A Fresh Look at Right Relations Building skills for intercultural communication and community is essential to living into the power and potential of our faith. We cannot benefit from the fullness of each person’s humanity, from the light of spirit that sparks in each of us uniquely, unless we can see and appreciate the differences among us. Those differences allow us to deepen in our knowledge of the holy as we bow to the mystery in each other. Many of those differences derive from what we have come to understand as culture. Our skill at honoring, celebrating, and working with the complexities of difference is instrumental to our ability to connect and see and know each other. It can be the foundation for discerning what shape justice should take, and what peace really looks like. As you are probably aware, the UUMA has a longstanding commitment to full inclusion, equity and antioppression, expressed most succinctly in our UUMA Code of Conduct as follows: Ethical Standards: Expectations of Conduct: I will acknowledge the reality of privilege arising from differences of social location and historical marginalization. I will exercise the power of my authority and the privileges of my social location in such a way that I do not disadvantage my colleagues on the basis of my or their race, color, class, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression, age, physical or mental ability or ethnicity. Our intentions to fulfill these standards and expectations have been good, and we have sometimes fallen short of meeting them. At the Institute this year, we are working on some new practices of personal and communal accountability. As we pursue our fulfillment of our obligations to each other and our aspirations for our selves, we are guided by these assumptions: 1. Ours is a learning community in which well-intentioned mistakes are an inevitable part of the road toward growth. 2. As members of a learning community, we each have the responsibility to help each other learn. We need help in learning what we can’t learn on our own. We need to help others learn what they cannot learn on their own. 3. We trust and affirm one another's good intentions. 4. Identity-based power dynamics are a fact of our institutional life together and will impact how we experience the Institute. 5. In the event of harmful statements or actions, we will work to respond with three priorities in mind: a) the person or persons who have been harmed; b) the person or persons who are accused of causing the harm; c) the community as a whole. Kim Crawford-Harvie is the senior minister at Arlington Street Church in Boston. She is married to Kem Morehead. After sending their third of three daughters off to college, they moved into a huge Greek Revival house in Concord (built the year Thoreau left for Walden Pond), where they live with twenty-nine high school boys. During summer vacations, they backpack in the National Parks or take to the road to camp with their Shiloh shepherds, Sierra and Obadiah. Singing Meditation Madeline Sifantus (Location: Coconut Palm) Child Care, Accessibility & Hospitality Accessibility: We have designated a few tables closest to the buffet lines as Easy Access. If you find you it would be helpful to be closer to the buffet line please take a spot here. We will also have some volunteers who will be available to navigate the line if you need an extra hand. They will be wearing special nametags – if you need help please ask! The Sirata also has multiple unisex bathrooms located throughout the hotel - in the main building, one by the Front Desk, and one inside the Royal Palm. Singing Meditation is a contemplative time which will combine singing with short periods of silence. This is not about performance for an audience but rather the blending of voices in simple song and chant interspersed with silence. Songs will be eclectic and come from a number of spiritual paths including Unitarian Universalist, Taize, earth based, and world sources. This spiritual practice is suitable for beginners as well as experienced singers and/or mediators. Maddie Sifantus is the Consulting Minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Wakefield, MA, Former Director of MUSE (Music Serving Elders), Founder and Director Emerita of the Golden Tones elder chorus, adjunct faculty at Andover Newton Theological School and a professional singer. She has been using music as a medium to connect ages and for transformation for several decades. A special note about food: We have spent a great deal of time working with the Sirata to prepare the grounds and meals so that all will be comfortable and feel welcome. We have done the best we can to accommodate different food requests but please understand that feeding over 500 people makes it difficult to gracefully provide individualized meals. To help make the buffets easier to navigate meals have been labeled so that you will know if something is Gluten Free, Corn Free, Vegan, etc. If you have concerns or find a meal where there is not sufficient food for you, please see Janette and she and the Sirata staff will do their best to address it or create a plate that you can enjoy. We ask that if you are omnivorous you save specialty items (such as Vegan dishes, Gluten-Free treats, etc) for those who requested such items. Chakra Yoga on the Beach Please note: We do our best to ensure that UUMA events are nut-free. Through singing Kirtan we explore, express and share the deepest caverns of our souls and ultimately find the eternal spring of love. For everyone who loves and practices Kirtan; or chanting the ecstatic songs of ancient India, Jai will share and demystify some of their secrets particularly the 'fact' that with just a little understanding of music and rhythm and a lot of self acceptance we all can sing and lead and share our hearts with others. The practice of chanting, itself, can become our teacher, guiding us home. Each session will include close reading of primary sources and shared reflection on the significance of history for our movement today. UUMA CENTER Institute for Excellence in Ministry 17 January 28-February 1, 2013 Institute Seminars INSTITUTE SCHEDULE Seminars have been pre-assigned. Please attend the seminar that is listed on your name badge. Ordained Ministry for A New Millennium: Theologies and Practices of Re-newal Rebecca Parker & Susan Ritchie (Location: Queen Palm) How might we reimagine a practice and theology of ordained ministry for this new millennium? The Puritan inheritance of an apocalyptic and eschatological imagination has informed our current understandings of prophetic, pastoral, and counter-oppressive ministry, but these understandings might be further evolved in light of contemporary contexts. Similarly, the historical relationships between UU identities and the roles of ordained ministers have shaped our theologies of sacramental and ritual practice—and yet, how might these theologies shift now, especially in the context of multi-religious engagement? How might a post-modern, relational understanding human interchange inform an evolving ecclesiology in an age of social networking and internet technologies? Come to think afresh about the nature, expression, and context of our calling. Reaching (and Doing) More by Being Less: Taking Theme-Based Ministry and Member Integration to the Next (Simpler) Level Scott Tayler (Location: Mediterranean Palm) There was a time when we assumed that “bigger menus” equaled greater impact, that more options meant reaching more people. Turns out it just leads to member confusion and minister burn-out. So, are there ways to both simplify our small group programming and make it more compelling at the same time? Can our small group programs provide ministers with ideas and material rather than requiring them to generate even more of it? This seminar answers with a resounding, “Yes!” Together we will look at a number of theme-based ministry models that allow us to do more with less; and then we will tweak those models to fit our own settings. Power with Love Marlin Lavanhar and Tamara Lebak (Location: Grand Plaza Imperial Ballroom) In ministerial formation, little attention is spent teaching ministers how to identify and leverage our power effectively. This workshop will offer tools and practical ways to use ministerial power and authority to reclaim the incredible promise of our free faith. Topics include leading with vision, raising the money to achieve vision, collaborative leadership, power within a multicultural community, and effective UU justice-making. Current(s): How are the shifting tides changing your church today? Carol Howard Merritt (Location: King Palm) How are congregations effectively navigating generational shifts? What are the cultural changes that should be effecting our churches? In our time together, we will explore how generational dynamics, technological advancements, and evolving communication have changed our culture and how they affect our ministries. Whether you serve a traditional congregation or you're interested in new church movements, we will discern how God is working through and with our current landscape. As a community of beloveds, we strive to create conditions that help us not only make meaning of these moments, but to use them as a opportunity to expand the boundaries of the soul. Religious leaders must pay special attention to these “moments,” especially as we work intentionally to be ever more inclusive, welcoming and loving. Come to this experiential seminar ready to explore the theories and methods that grow the boundaries of the soul.
