Happy Holidays all!!
Our traditional, Saint Stephan’s Day Celebration will be held December 1 at
Album Park. We will have tournaments for Heavy, Rapier and Bocce and after the
tournaments everyone is invited to our home for dinner. This is a wonderful
opportunity for new and old members of the Citadel to get to know each other
better.
On December 15th many will be traveling to either al’Barran Midwinter or Caer
Galen Midwinter. Whichever you chose to attend, be prepared for a magnificent
time.
We have chosen to suspend the Tuesday Night fighter practice until after Estrella
War. It has become to dark and cold for the fighters to continue at night.
Saturday practice will remain at Album Park.
Many of the officers are looking for deputies. If you are interested serving as an
officer please speak with us or the officer you are interested in working with.
We would like to wish you all joyous holiday season, may it be filled with family
and friends, love and laughter.

Business Meeting
Minutes
Seneschal: Old Business: A demo occurred at Gadsen Independent
School District (Anthony, NM) on November 30, 2012. 8 individuals
from the Barony attended the school-run Renaissance Fair.
At least 20 individuals from the Barony helped the Shire of Nahrun
Kabirun to have a Medieval presence at the Dona Ana County
Renaissance Fair during the first weekend of November.
New Business: With THLord Warmin’s retirement from the Baronial
Seneschallate, I assumed the role as Interim Acting Baronial
Seneschal at Fall Coronation.
My first order of business was to find a replacement Seneschal. A
call for letters of interest went out, with one response (Sir Roger), by
the deadline. Sir Roger will serve as my deputy until March 2013,
at which time he will become the Baronial Seneschal.
My second order of business is to rebuild the Financial Committee.
Lady Siobhan (Seneschal of Nahrun Kabirun) and I tallied the votes:
the members of the financial committee are Vicomte Berold (peer)
and Don Christopher (non-peer).
My next order of business is to find officers for all the vacant
positions (Seneschal, Exchequer, Herald). I am pleased to announce
that all of the greater and the lesser offices are filled. Sir Roger will
be the Baronial Seneschal in March 2013. Baroness Muirenn will be
the Baronial Exchequer, effective 1 January 2013. Lord Carlos is the
Rook Pursuivant, effective immediately. If you are interested in
helping out the Barony by serving as an officer, please speak to one
of our officers about your interests and how you can help the Citadel.
The Barony is planning for Candlemas (a simple 1-day event) in
February, run by Sir Berold. An impromptu financial committee
meeting was held on November 24, with Baroness Leah, Sir Berold
(as the interim peer representative), and Don Christopher (as the
interim non-peer representative), and a motion was made to approve
the expenses for the event. The Barony is in the planning stages for
this event, so more information will follow as particulars are
confirmed.
Chronicler: We need deputies for the Chronicler and Web Minister
positions. Seriously!

Exchequer: The Citadel is still in good shape financially.
Chiurgeon: Everyone has been good and no injuries to
report.
Scribe: Much thanks to all who came out to the demo at
Loma Linda School this Friday. The kids had a lot of
fun. And I think so did we. We even got some money out
of it, always a plus. My apologies for anyone who got
lost following my directions. Apparently the Google map
is completely gonzo. Most of the street names on the
map were wrong and the positioning marker was
completely wrong. Again thanks to all.

Norse Midwinter’s Night
Barony of Cear Galen (Boulder, CO)
When:
December 15
Where:
545 West 10th Avenue Broomfield, CO 80020
Through the frigid air and snowy landscape, Lies a small village. From this village rings the joyful sound of Yule tide
cheer and the sent of delicious food. Festive decorations about the village brings warmth and good feelings all around.
Bellowing laughter and merriment come from the Great Hall at the edge of town.
You fling open the great doors of the hall and you see the most splendid revel your eyes have ever gazed upon. You see
warriors fighting over the last wheel of cheese.
You marvel at small children playing with a dragon. On the table you see a feast so vast and scrumptious, that your mouth
waters. Lastly you view men and women chasing each other around a stump. Which is quite peculiar. You are welcomed
in to join the festivities and joy that only Caer Galen can provide.
We will raise our glass and celebrate with good friends and family. There will be combat (Fencing, and Heavy Suit The
Last Wheel Cheese), dancing, games, delicious food, festive Norse garb contest, silent auction for Royal Tavel Fund. and
of course Caer Galen Musical chairs! We will also hold the Captain of the Guard tournament and the Harp of Caer Galen.

From the Kingdom Seneschal
Greetings to the good populace of the Barony of the Citadel of Southern Pass from Thorvald Thorolfsson, Seneschal of the Kingdom of
the Outlands,
Earlier this year, Mistress Maimuna representing the Kingdom Seneschal’s office visited the Barony to discuss its future. A report of
this meeting was presented to Their Majesties with conclusions and recommendations for the future. It was discovered that the Barony
had strong support from the populace to remain a Barony instead of reverting to Shire status. The report recommended that the
Kingdom recognize the will of the populace in this matter and keep its status as a Barony.
Another recommendation in this report was to recognize His Lordship Warmin’s long and faithful service to the Barony as its
Seneschal but to ask for him to seek out a successor to the office so that someone with new energy and fresh ideas could lead the
Barony toward finding ways toward improving the state of the Barony.
In the subsequent months, there has been much discussion regarding the office of Seneschal to include going back and forth over how
best to proceed. I therefore decided to hold a meeting at Coronation where I sat down with the Baroness, the Citadel Seneschal, my
Southern Regional Deputies, along with a couple of other representatives of the Baronial populace.
During this meeting there was much discussion regarding the current state of the Barony with a focus on the Baronial Seneschal’s role.
At the conclusion of this meeting, I regretfully had no other recourse than to remove Warmin from the office of Seneschal.
Effective immediately Mistress Maimuna, the interim Southern Regional Deputy Kingdom Seneschal, is the acting Seneschal of the
Barony of the Citadel of the Southern Pass. This is a temporary appointment. Mistress Maimuna will be working directly with
members of the populace and with the Coronet toward rebuilding the Baronial offices to include seeking out potential candidates for the
office of Seneschal.
While it is regrettable that the state of the Barony has come to the point of removing the Seneschal, all of the responsibility should not
be solely laid at the feet of the outgoing Seneschal. Throughout this situation, Her Excellency Leah has taken upon herself to accept
full responsibility for the current state of the Barony. While the Coronet does have a strong role to play in the Barony, I categorically
reject the idea that this situation is her sole responsibility. Above all, I know for certain that Her Excellency has given her heart and
soul to the Barony. She truly loves the Barony with all of her heart and serves the Barony from that love. I ask the populace to support
Their Excellencies as there is only so much that they can do personally without support from the populace.
For my part, I take some responsibility for not adequately addressing this situation sooner. It was my sincere hope that following
Mistress Maimuna’s visit there would be a resurgence of activity and improvement such as happened following visits from our office to
the Shires of Nahrun Kabirun and Hinterlands. Their Excellencies have repeated asked for help from the Kingdom offices and little has
been done in fear of seeming to be micro-managing the Barony. This is about to change. While the Kingdom officers will not
micromanage the Barony, Maimuna and I will be asking them to take a stronger role in supporting their various aspects of the Society
within the Barony.
Sadly, much responsibility of the Barony’s current state is due to the unfortunate lack of volunteerism from the populace to include
volunteering to hold office and run events. While it was clear that the populace wished to remain a Barony there has been a sad lack of
volunteers to work toward improving the state of the Barony. There are a number of offices within the Barony that are in dire need of
someone who will actively work toward improving the state of the Barony. It is my understanding that a number of the Baronial
offices are filled with people who are burnt-out and even those Baronial offices that are currently filled can use help with dedicated
deputies. If you would like to help the Barony reclaim its former glory then I call upon you to speak to Their Excellencies and/or
Mistress Maimuna about how you can help.
If you are interested in serving the Barony as its next Seneschal please send a letter of interest to myself ([email protected]),
Mistress Maimuna ([email protected]), and Their Excellency’s. These letters should include your experiences that you feel
would benefit the Barony along with ideas that you have toward its improvement.
I look forward to the Barony of the Citadel of the Southern Pass reclaiming its role as a strong Barony in our Southernmost lands on the
gateway to Argonia and a shining example to our small far Southern Shires.
In Service to the Society and Stag,
THL Thorvald Thorolfsson
Kingdom Seneschal of the Outlands
From the Acting Citadel Seneschal
Unto the Populace of the Barony of the Citadel of the Southern Pass does Mistress Maimuna, Temporary Acting Baronial
Seneschal, send greetings.
I am the Emergency Deputy Kingdom Seneschal and am filling the role as Southern Regional Deputy Seneschal until
January, at which time, Baroness Wu will be filling this role. One of the job requirements of the Southern Regional
Deputy Seneschal is to work to strengthen the groups in the Southern Outlands and to provide oversight and
administration assistance to these groups.
THLord Warmin stepped down as Baronial Seneschal at Fall Coronation, and, as a result of his retirement and not having
a deputy, THLord Thorvald, Kingdom Seneschal, asked me to serve as the Baronial Seneschal until a replacement for
THLord Warmin is found. I thank THLord Warmin for his years of steadfast service to the Barony, and I wish to His
Lordship that his retirement be filled with days of rest and relaxation and that the Barony will again see him active in the
SCA once his “batteries have recharged.”
The Barony has, for my entire SCA career, occupied a dear place in my heart, and I wish fervently that the Barony finds
its strength again and is re-born as the keystone of the deep South of the Kingdom, guarding the gates to Argonia and
fostering aid to the small Shires in the South (Gleann Medonach and Nahrun Kabirun). I began playing in the SCA in
Nahrun Kabirun in the mid 1990s, and Citadel was the “mother Barony” to our group. I have known Sir Conrade and
Mistress Leah for as long as I have played in the SCA and have, many times, reaped the benefit of their kindness and love
and guidance. The Citadel is where I was elevated as a Peer. I am proud to be a member of the Southern rapier guard, Le
Gard d’Azure, stationed in the Citadel. I am deeply proud of my Citadel service award, given for service to a Barony in
which I have never lived but have always happily served.
My primary goals for my temporary role as the Baronial Seneschal are to find an appropriate Baronial Seneschal for the 2year warrant of office, to fill vacant required Baronial offices, to find deputies for the required Baronial offices, and to
ensure that reporting is timely for each of the greater offices. Once a suitable candidate for Baronial Seneschal is found, I
will cede the reins of the Barony to that individual.
That being said, the requirements for a Baronial Seneschal are to submit timely and informative monthly reports to the
Southern Regional Deputy Seneschal, to coordinate and collaborate with the Coronet on the administration of the Barony
and her activities, to serve on the Baronial financial committee with four people (the Baronial Exchequer and three
members-at-large), and to foster volunteerism and fill the required Baronial offices with suitable volunteers. In a Barony,
all the greater offices of state must be filled: Seneschallate, Exchequer, Knight Marshal, Herald, A&S Minister,
Chronicler, and Chirurgeon. It is my expectation that each of these offices will also have a deputy officer who is willing
and capable to take over that office, if need be. Lesser offices of state may be filled, but if not, the reporting and duty
requirements must be fulfilled by the greater officer of state under which that office falls.
I am requesting letters of interest for the Baronial Seneschallate. If interested in the position, please send a letter of
interest to the Kingdom Seneschal ([email protected]), to the Coronet ([email protected]), and to me
([email protected]). Within the letter of interest, please outline your experience pertinent to the role of Seneschal
(you may include both SCA and modern-day experience), your plan for the future and the strengthening of the Barony,
and your plan on how to recruit suitable officers and deputies for the greater officers of the Barony. Please submit your
letter of interest by Friday, November 30, 2012.
It is the Kingdom Seneschal’s expectation that the next Baronial Seneschal will serve as the deputy Baronial Seneschal for
a few months before transitioning into the role as the Baronial Seneschal. The individual selected for this role will be
working closely with me and with Baroness Wu (as the incoming Southern Regional Deputy Seneschal) throughout this
transition period.
I look forward to seeing the Citadel grow in strength and in volunteerism, and I thank the Barony for the opportunity to
serve Her once again.
Long live the Baron! Long live the Baroness! Long live the Citadel! In glad and faithful service to the Barony and Her
Coronet, do I remain,
Mistress Maimuna, OP

*The Grant of Arms*
There is no 'charter' per se for the simple Grant of Arms in the Society. The simple or 'naked' Grant of Arms is awarded by
the Crown to individuals for excellence in ANY field of endeavor. It may be bestowed by itself or with a lower level
award, such as a Court Barony, to elevate the lower award in the order of precedence and / or give the award more weight
in it's bestowal from the Crown.
As the History of the Barony goes, these are the recipients of simple Grants of Arms (those NOT associated with Kingdom
Level Awards) elevated while they resided here in the Barony;
Baron Rutor Rotbart von Rottenburg
3-19-88
(Received with his elevation to the Baronial Coronet)
Duchess Morgana of Land's End
3-19-88
(Received with her elevation to the Baronial Coronet)
Countess Claudia Lisabetta Senatori de Firenze
1-15-00
(Received with her Court Barony)
Vicomte Berold de Gilbert
4-28-01
(Received with his retiring Court Barony)
Naquiba Bahiyyah bint Suhayl
4-28-01
THL Warmin of Belshire
11-9-02
Sheik Omar Mohammud Mirzazadeh
4-13-03
Banbharun Muirenn Glas ingen Fháeláin
3-29-08
(Received with her retiring Court Barony)
(Received with his Court Barony)
(Received with her retiring Court Barony)
Baron Ordög Magyar Béla
1-16-10
(Received with his Court Barony)
Baron Nikolaus von Stahlburg
10-2-10
(Received with his retiring Court Barony)
***A note on titles...***
The more one gets used to the various differences in titles used from different parts of the world, the more one is apt to
know them when they hear them and the more realistic our Society sounds.
The oddites in the list of titles above include;
1) Vicomte Berold - since His Excellencies' persona is that of the Norman French, his noble title is also of that region of
the world; Vicomte - Viscount.
2) Naquiba Bahiyyah - since Her Excellencies' persona is that of the Middle East; Naquiba - Viscountess.
3) Banbharun Muirenn - since Her Excellencies' persona is that of the Gaelic Isles; Banbharun - Baroness.
***General Trivia*** - The Grants bestowed on Their Excellencies Rutor and Morgana were given on the day they
stepped up as the Second Coronets of the Citadel. It is most unusual and almost unknown for the bestowing of a Grant to a
new Coronet when they begin a reign, but it was performed by King Hagen and Queen Beatrix, 4th Crown of the Outlands.
***Title Trivia*** - It is a trend among some with Grant level awards (be they simple or attached to kingdom level
awards) to refer to themselves in naval terms since the honorific is lord / lady"ship". One grant or lord / lady"ship" makes
one a Captain. Two"ships" makes one a Commodore. Three "ships" makes one an Admiral. I suppose that after that the
various degrees of the Admiralty would be invoked - Rear, Vice, Fleet etc... At this time, Naquiba Bahiyyah bint Suhayl
and Baron Roger de Gilbert hold more 'ships' than any other members of the Barony, giving them each the rank of
'Admiral'.
This is the Baronial history of the simple Grant of Arms as I know it.
