Baronial Missive:
To all the Good and Noble People of our Barony of Andelcrag do We, Antonia and Collette send greetings. The
Yuletide season has come and gone, and we look forward to the winter and its cozy offerings.
In Our Barony, We have a few winter events that We encourage all of Our baronial members to attend:

Three Hills--St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, February 14th, 2015**
**We are encouraging the wearing of Red, Pink, or ‘Honey Garb’ to Val Day this year, as it falls directly on
Valentine’s Day**
Please let Us know if any other events need to be added to the calendar.
Winters in Our Baronial lands are harsh. The Great Lake we take care of on behalf of the Crown loves to stir up the
snow. Please be cautious when traveling to events and practices- We want all of Our populace to be safe and sound!
Winter is a wonderful time to be working on increasing our knowledge through the Arts and Sciences. Pentamere
Regional A&S Faire will be held on April 18th, 2015. If anyone has any questions regarding entrance, please contact
Us or Our Baronial Arts and Sciences Champion, THL Helena Sybilla. We would be happy to guide newcomers to
the process of entering the Faire or to offer guidance to veteran entrants. Let’s show the Midrealm the beautiful
artworks and research that the members of the Barony of Andelcrag is graced with!
As a reminder, We would like to encourage the members of the populace to attend their monthly business meetings.
All members are welcome to share their input at these meetings and the meetings offer insight into the workings of
our non-profit organization.
We are also in need of your suggestions for those whom you feel deserve awards, whether they be Baronial or
Kingdom. If you know someone whom you feel deserves an award please email Us
at: [email protected]. Please include the person’s SCA name, modern name, group, the award(s) you
think the person is deserving of and why you think they should have it. We look to our populace to help us in
finding people who are worthy of accolades.

Baronial Herald’s letter:
On this cold winter night, I send warm greetings to the Populace of Andelcrag.
Aside from being a voice of the Crown, or in our case Coronet, is to assist people in registering their names, devices,
and badges. If you have any questions about name, device, or badge registration, please feel free to contact me. I am
available on Facebook most evenings, and by email at a slightly slower rate. I run consult tables at various events
throughout the year, and am always happy to chat about heraldic matters at events. There is an event on 21 February
in Weld Lake this year called Herald's Pointe and Scribal Collegium. This is an annual event with all day heraldic
consultations with various heralds available to help. This is a good inexpensive event that covers a good variety of
Heraldic and Scribal areas.
As always for those interested in the Scribal Arts there is a Scroll Blank Challenge again this year at ValDay.

As some of you know, most of our Cantons do not have a herald. I would like to change that, and by Border War
have a pursuivant in each of our cantons. The requirements to become a herald are simple, have a love of heraldry
in any form, and file a report 4 times per year. If you are interested please contact me, and I can help. You do not
have to be well versed in book heraldry or in voice heraldry, but an interest is helpful.
A personal project I would like to do this year is to create a Roll of Arms for the Barony. A Roll of Arms is a listing
of everyone's registered names with their arms. This will eventually be linked to the Baronial Order of Precedence
so it will be easier to look up what awards people have. If you have registered heraldry, please forward me an image
I can link to the RoA so I can avoid having to draw it myself (you really do not want to see how bad my drawing
skills are).
Speaking of Order of Precedence, Their Excellencies are always looking for recommendations for awards. We are a
large Barony and although Our Excellecies are awesome, they are not able to be everywhere all the time. Please
write Them with your recommendations for local populace members. Also, it would not hurt, for you to forward
your Kingdom level award recommendations to Them, as They may have something to add to help that deserving
person receive an award.

Natural Dyes for Kids

Before there were chemical dyes, people had to make natural dyes from plants and natural materials.
What You Will Need:

Wool, silk, linen or cotton fabric to dye (pre washed)
A variety of colorful plant material (see suggestions below)
Knife, hammer (to crush shells)
Glass or steel bowl
Water
Old saucepans
Cheese cloth
Strainer
•
•
Alum (available in the spice rack at grocery stores, though dyers alum works better)
Glass jar (for solar dye method)
Note: You'll need an adult to help you with the cutting and simmering in this project. Do not try alone.
**Also note that some dyes may be toxic, pans should not be reused unless food-safe. Nor should the dye bath be
tasted or drunk.**
Step 1: Pick one dye plant to use type per pan or jar.
Step 2: Cut up your plant materials. Chop up or crush hard materials such as roots and place in cheese cloth. Tie
shut. Soak them overnight in a glass or enamel bowl with just enough water to cover them.
Step 3: Place in pan and simmer gently for about one hour. Check it frequently and add water when needed. OR
place in large glass jar with water set in the sun. Some plant dyes may be simply placed into the jar in the sun
without simmering.
Step 4: Measure the liquid. For every quart of dye, add one half ounce of alum (about one tablespoon). Alum is a
mordant. That means it helps set the dye. Add this to pan or jar and stir in.
Step 5: Wet your fabric and wring it out, then put it in the steel pan with your dye or the jar in the sun. Put the pan
on the stove and simmer slowly until the fabric is just a little darker than you want it. (The fabric will look lighter
when it dries.) Remember that natural colors may be soft, especially on linen and cotton. If dyeing in a jar leave it
in the sun a day or two.
Step 6: Move the pan or jar to the sink and pour everything through a strainer. Run a little cold water over your
fabric to cool and rinse it, wring it out, and hang it up to dry outdoors where the drips won't hurt anything.
Here are some possible dyes to try.
The color may fade more easily with some than others. The alum mordant should help the fabric take and hold the
color better.
Note: Natural blues are best noted as coming from indigo and woad, both are toxic to children and should not be
used by anyone under 18.
The best green shades come from overdyeing fabric, first blue and then with a yellow.
Adding a bit of copper or iron when dyeing will change the color, or cause interesting patterns where it touches the
fabric.
This is just a small sample of what can be done with natural dyes. Experiment, but do so safely.
