We relaxed in cooler weather and witnessed HL Rachael elevated to the Order of the Pelican. Court Night this month had a great turn out despite the oppressive heat. Tournaments were fought and artistic endeavors were displayed. Lady Catherine, Lady Aueline and Lord Spellsinger were the voters' choice for Arts & Sciences with an amazing quilt depicting the virtues of knighthood. The victor on the Rapier field was Lord Mercurio who did not have an easy victory. Lord Argo shined as the inspiration. Sir Cael bested the fierce competitors in the hard suit tourney and Lord Tristan inspired all that witnessed the examples of prowess and chivalry in the eric. If the stardust were not enough, Lord Tristan in turn, presented the Dagger of Inspiration to Master Kaiilla of Terra as he was his inspiration. What an amazing populace We have the privilege of working and playing with. We would also like to thank HL Kirsten Marie Matz for doing a beautiful job resetting the points on the Coronets. HE Seelos will be bringing the bling to show off at Pennsic, We would also like to remind everyone of the archery and thrown weapons practices. Both the archery and the thrown weapons c ommunity are full of amazing, talented people who love to share their martial art. For more information, check the Tome of Faces pages for each of these groups. Have you ever wanted to own a piece of Barony of Atenveldt? Maybe have a baronial relic this is impregnated to its very core with stardust? A symbol of the dream? Something that has witnessed Baronial History for over 14 years? Then today you are truly in luck. I have for sale pieces of the original perimeter poles from Big Red, the Atenveldt Baronial Pavilion. These poles have been supporting the baronial pavilion for 14 years. In that time they have seen laughter, tears, awards, elevation ceremonies, and heard the words from 4 different sets for Barons and Baronesses. They have seen wedding, bardics, and revels. They have provided shelter in times of storm and shade from the brutal Atenveldt Sun. At this point, they are almost literally pure concentrated stardust. Now how much would you pay to take a sample of this dream home with you? Would you pay 5 dollars, 10 dollars 20 dollars? More? Well my friends I have received special dispensation from their Excellencies to let you have a piece of this stardust impregnated poles from Big Red. And the cost, not 10 dollars, not 5 dollars. By Aoife inghean Oisin Before the invasion of the Angles and the Saxons, the jewelry and personal adornments of Britain were a fusion of Celtic and Roman characteristics. However, in the 5th Century, Germanic settlers from Northwest Germany and Denmark arrived on the shores of Britain and brought with them their unique jewelry designs. These designs included rolling scrolls, geometric patterns and zoomorphic motifs which became dominant elements in not only British but also Continental European and Viking art for the next 500 years. Early Anglo-Saxon jewelry, called Style I, contained very analytical animal forms with barely legible, abbreviated components and dense textures. It is thought to be the visual equivalent of Anglo-Saxon poetry, with visual games and riddling images. For example, a brooch found in a 6th Century woman’s grave had a heavy covering of animal ornamentation on the body and the running scroll pattern around the borders. The brooch would have been worn to fasten a cloak or outer garment. Over the years, there was a gradual shift to a more elegant and legible ornamentation, known as Style II. Its prominent feature was interlaced animal bodies in a regular pattern. This style of jewelry became widely popular all over Europe; from Scandinavia to Lombard, Italy; from Middle Danube to England. Viking raids and trade brought large masses of silver when they began settling in the British Isles during the 9th and 10th Centuries. This brought on a shift to silver as the predominant metal of jewelry. As gold became increasingly scarce, it was used only for finger rings, gilding and inlay. With silver as the principal metal, the size of brooches became larger and their function was Palm Prints 12 July 2011 to display the wealth and status of the wearer as much as to embellish and fasten garments. A hoard of six brooches was found in a churchyard in Pentney, Norfolk. All but one of the brooches is silver, with the sixth a gilt bronze base with an openwork silver design on top. They are late 8th Century to 9th Century Anglo-Saxon designs and are in very good condition. The intricate, elaborate designs display the excellent craftsmanship of their makers. While some jewelry, such as neck and arm rings, were made of unadorned bullion, the love of the animal motif and highly decorated surfaces continued through the end of the Anglo-Saxon period. Because of hoards and gravesite, we are able to learn and appreciate the exquisite craftsmanship of the Anglo-Saxon artists who created these treasures. Silver brooch made of gilded silver, with square head and animal motifs throughout. Found in the Isle of Wight, England 5th century to early 6th century AD.
