A second chance

This is Precious. My husband
was driving home from work and she was
thrown out of a car in front of him in a plastic bag.
He swerved to miss the “rubbish” and the rubbish ran across
the road. She was 6 weeks old. She likes to have cuddles, sun
bathe and spend time with her great dane friend, Missy.
She is an absolute gem, we are so lucky to have her!

Viruses, Malware and Spam
Viruses, Malware and Spam have now become the
background of the internet. Because of this the people that
make the operating system of a device have to take this into
consideration. Windows 10 now has both a virus and malware
checker built in, Apple control the apps and programs so much
that it’s rare for something to get through. Even Android now
has stuff to try and clean up your phone.
All this means that nowadays installing software to do these
jobs isn’t as much of a necessity, and in some cases can
actually be worse. It’s worth checking to see if you can get rid
of yours and let the system clean its self.

Festival of the Forest
The famous Festival of the Forest Timber Display is a
free event held throughout the 2 week festivities from
Oct 1st to 15th. Every year there is something more
amazing than the last. From local School Students to
craftsmen from all over Australia, there is something
for everyone. The Festival of the Forest hosts its
Grand Opening on Saturday 1 October at midday
at the Festival Hall, Grigg St. Open throughout the

Jacaranda Festival Day
Atherton-Herberton Historic Railway will be holding
a Jacaranda Festival day to celebrate the track’s 106th
birthday at the Herberton Station, John Street. 10.30am
to 4pm on Sunday October 9. There will be train rides
on the Jacaranda Express, face painting, stalls, history
of the railway and sleeper cutters, blacksmithing, bush
poetry and great music. Food available at a sausage sizzle
and Devonshire tea stalls. Councillor Kate Eden to plant
a Jacaranda tree.

Celebrating 30 years, the 2016 Tablelands
Garden & Lifestyle Expo will be held at the
Malanda Showground on October 8 from

60 garden & lifestyle stalls, cut flower display,
scarecrow competition, giant raffle & door

25th Birthday Community Fun Day
ECHO is holding a Community Fun Day in Malanda to celebrate their 25th anniversary on Saturday October 29.The vision for the day is to celebrate ECHO’s service to the
community by creating an enjoyable and inclusive event full of things to do and see and to raise FUN in the community. Entry to the event is free as are most of the activities.
The action packed day includes old fashioned games including tunnel ball, egg and spoon, corner spry, leader ball, sack race and three legged race, a tug of war competition,
celebrity sumo suit wrestling with Cr Anthony Ball as the first celebrity entrant, thong throwing, yabbie racing, handball and goal kicking comp with Tyson Muscat from NRL,
jumping castle, Yungaburra Lion’s train, tai chi and yoga class, ballroom dancing display and class, ECHO 25th birthday cake decorating competition, children’s colouring-in
competition and much more!
Various prizes for the day include a family pass to Sugarworld, ECHO lucky door prize and ECHO quiz prize including accommodation, meal vouchers, hamper and vouchers
and items from local businesses. The day also features displays and presentations by community, businesses and service groups including Police, Fire Brigade, Malanda
Information Centre/ TRC, NBN, Girl Guides, Tablelands Youth Movement, Malanda Eels Bullride, Malanda Milk, local crafts and products and buskers. Also on the day face

The FNQ Country Music Festival is held annually in Mareeba
at Kerribee Park and is run by the Walkamin Country Music
Club Inc.

Combined Mundy-Turner Choir
Cath Mundy and Jay Turner have facilitated Instant Choir Playshops across the Globe and TFF is very
proud to be part of that process this year here on the Atherton Tablelands. The Qld Government and
TRC through the Regional Arts Development Grant have enabled the TFF to bring Mundy-Turner to
Malanda, Atherton and Herberton in a series of Instant Choir Playshops leading up to the Tablelands
Folk Festival in Yungaburra. A combined Playshop Choir will take to the stage at this year’s festival to

Held on the Saturday morning of the festival in the acoustically magical St mark’s Church, the major prize includes a fully funded recording session
with Buzz Music, Cairns.
The Poet’s Breakfast on Sunday morning at Nick’s Restaurant, hosted by Mark Both is legendary. This year a brand new event, the Saturday
morning BYO Poet’s breakfast on The Fringe Stage hosted by Charters Towers ‘Soap Box Poet’ is added to the mix. Bring your brekky and your
poem and join in the fray.
The festival runs from 6 pm Friday until 5 pm Sunday and is a jam packed family friendly event with true

What’s happening in Kuranda?
Kuranda Festival
Kuranda will become an outdoor Big Top when the Circus Comes to Town on Sunday October 23 for plenty
of free entertainment at Kuranda Festival.
Tourism Kuranda Executive Officer Marc Sleeman said Dream State Circus would give an action-packed
performance with acrobatics, juggling and incredible fire manipulation, with youth performers Diamond Duo
showcasing their amazing juggling and aerial skills.
“Any youngster who wants to join the circus should join the free Cairns Youth Circus Arts School (CYCAS)
workshops teaching circus skills including stilt walking, uni-cycling, diabolos, poi, plates, juggling, hula hoops,
acro-balance, clowning, aerial and much more,” he said.
“Celebrating the 128th anniversary of the official survey of Kuranda, Kuranda Festival emphasises the friendly,
laid-back atmosphere of the Village in the Rainforest with five solid hours of free family entertainment from
10am to 3pm.
“There will be free jumping castles and face painters, a magic show, horse and carriage rides, free mini golf,
art displays, Djabugay dance performance and lolly making demonstrations plus activities all over the village
from the two markets to Centenary Park, to the main street and down to the Barron River.
“Teams are already getting together to practise for the hotly contested Bash of the Barron River Raft Race,
and I’m sure there are plenty of kids willing to nominate for the Ice Cream Eating Competition featuring the
delicious flavours of the Kuranda Home-made Tropical Fruit Ice Cream van”.
“The popular German Sausage Eating Competition will be on again with competitors scoffing as many as
eight sausages in just 10 minutes and the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party is back this year where you can enjoy tea
and cakes in the quirky atmosphere of the Kuranda Original Rainforest Markets.
“There will be art & craft workshops for children to create their own “Mad Hat” for the tea party and four
face painters will be transforming children’s faces into clowns and Mad Hatters with the best design being
judging at the Heritage Markets.
“Kuranda Festival is a great community event celebrating the colourful lifestyle we enjoy sharing with visitors
to our village in the rainforest”.
Two textile artists from the Kuranda Arts Co-op, Dorothy Clews and Toni Rogers, will be conducting a
community weaving of banners to celebrate the Kuranda Festival from 10am outside the Arts Co-operative
Gallery on Coondoo Street, Kuranda. The community is invited to join them in this project. Materials will be
provided, but if you wish to bring your own yarn, string, tape or long fabric strips (5-8 mm wide) to add to
the weaving, you are most welcome. The finished banners will be installed in the Kuranda Library after the
festival for a short time so that everyone can enjoy them.
Poets Breakfast – Calling All Poets
If you can’t wait for Kuranda Festival to start then get started earlier by Sharing the Spoken Word at the
Poets Breakfast at 8am at Frogs Restaurant. Breakfast and coffee will be served, and you will be entertained
by Kuranda’s finest wordsmiths, songwriters and entertainers until 9.30am. It’s an open microphone format,
so if you would like to stand up with your poem or song, please contact Cathy at the Kuranda Visitor

Mike Elrington Live in Kuranda
Mike Elrington will be performing songs from his new album Two Lucky Stars at the Petite Café from 5pm for a lovely Sunday Session on
October 2. After 15 years, 7 full length albums, over 1000 shows all over the world, a beautiful 2 year-old daughter and a brand spanking
new bouncing baby boy, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Australian blues/roots musician Mike Elrington would slow things down some,
even just for a little while. But, with the release of his first completely acoustic LP, Two Lucky Stars and an East Coast Australian tour in
the works, that’s clearly not the case. Comprising of 14 tracks, Two Lucky Stars sees Elrington dig deep with trademark raw passion and a
no-holds barred honesty, delivering listeners a heartfelt and eclectic mix of blues, roots, folk & swamp-rock. The album was produced by
ARIA-award winning Peter “Reggie” Bowman, and features the talents of Chris Wilson on vocals and harmonica, Roderick McLeod on
drums/percussion, Catherine Quirk and Michelle Meehan on violin and cello and extra vocal duties from June Harrison, Chase Bowman

Blue Music Festival
The team at Kangaventure are excited to be bringing the second Rock this Country Blue
Music Festival to The Kuranda Billabong on Saturday October 15.
The Billabong is a spectacular events venue situated in the traditional Country of the Djabugay
People, The RTCB Festival team has assembled a fine day of what they think is a great cross
section of artists drawn from the three music genres of rock, country and blues.
The line up includes Adam Hole Band, Blue Tonic, George Davies, The Silktones, Folkcentric, Garrington
T-Jones, Secret Tuesday, Seems a Little Strange and Omid Master Band. So why don’t you and your friends come on up to the Billabong, set up a camp

Irish Mythen
The award winning Irish Mythen will be performing at
the Kuranda Understage at 4pm on October 16 - another
Sunday session. Irish has just wowed audiences at the
Woodford Folk Festival and at Bluesfest.
This is her only FNQ performance.
Canadian troubadour Irish Mythen has made a huge
impression on Australian audiences over the past 12
months - she’s brought the house down at festivals such
as Mullumbimbi, Small Halls, Illawarra, Woodford,
Bluesfest in Byron Bay (where organisers were so struck
by her that they named one of the resident koala after

Torimba Festival Opening – The famous
Festival of the Forest Timber Display is a

Queensland Symphony Orchestra in
Atherton – At 6.30pm presented by TACTIC (The Tablelands Arts Council), fourteen
musicians from the QSO will perform a wonderful program of music including Vivaldi’s
‘Four Seasons’, and other great works for a
string orchestra. In Vivaldi’s time, orchestras
commonly performed with a violinist directing instead of a conductor. The performance
follows this tradition with QSO’s concert
master, Warwick Adeney leading the QSO.
This will be a must see for music lovers of

Atherton-Herberton Historic Railway will
be holding a Jacaranda Festival day to
celebrate the track’s 106th Birthday at the
Herberton Station, John Street. 10.30am
to 4pm. There will be train rides on the
Jacaranda Express, face painting, stalls,
history of the railway and sleeper cutters,
blacksmithing, bush poetry and great music. Food available at a sausage sizzle and
