“LEARNING TO LIVE IS
THE ULTIMATE AIM OF ALL
EDUCATION.”
Heinrich Pestalozzi (Swiss Educator and Visionary, 1746 – 1827)
www . dreamscapeluxurytravel . com
I
consider myself a late bloomer when it comes to
nurturing my adventurous side. As a child I was fragile,
easily sick, afraid of many things. At 11 years old,
thinking I was “good enough,” I tried to rollerblade downhill in
San Francisco and ended up with a severely broken kneecap.
By the time I had outgrown my childhood sickness and injury,
my studies and taking care of life's responsibilities had taken
a toll, and I always managed to find an excuse not to embark on any adventures. Does this sound
familiar?
When I finally turned 30, I realized that time is indeed a luxury. And the only way to have time is to
make time. I idealized a more balanced lifestyle where working hard means finding time and outlets
to let off steam. This is the inspiration behind our latest edition, Adventure Travel. A special theme for
hardworking readers who need a holiday with as much adrenaline as their working life.
Our team and travel designers around the world have come up with different levels of adventures for
both beginners and advanced to tick off for your next adventurous dREAM holiday.
Ski lovers with a taste for the luxurious and adventurous will love our introduction to Courchevel, part
of one of the largest ski parks globally, with 600 kilometres of skiing across three valleys. In particular
Courchevel 1850 is one of the most expensive and exclusive world class ski venues in the world, with
its amazing slopes and six Michelin star restaurants, clubs, shopping and resorts, it truly has something
for everyone.
For a more laid back and relaxing adventure, Amanwana in Indonesia is a soft adventure camping
under the stars in absolute luxury. Or, if you're looking to add a little adventure to the education of
your children, our feature on the extra-curricula activities at the world's most exclusive boarding
school, Institut auf dem Rosenberg in Switzerland, will have you rushing to sign up. And then there's
luxury cycling in Portugal, exploring all it has to offer on two wheels, then, when you need a break,
relaxing in a luxury AC cabin while your personal chef prepares your meal and drinks.
Immerse yourself in the
hidden escape of a sacred land.
I hope you share my desire for adventure travel. Not only will you see the world beyond your
doorstep, it will also make your mind more positive and your body healthier. Adventures give us
great memories that we often come back to, an especially valuable exercise these days when we’re
so perpetually busy that most of what we do passes by in a flash and is gone forever. Reliving our
adventures allows us the time — and capability — to learn something from them.
No matter how many steps it takes to get there, the one thing that’s certain about travelling to
spectacular spots is that it soon becomes addictive. Experiencing one wilderness just doesn’t seem
enough; your soul quickly calls for more. And each time you go, you find yourself changing. With
each adventure, you challenge yourself just a little bit more and bring yourself one step closer to your
dreams.

Ms. Ivonne
I have heard that Cuba is now
open to visit. How do you get
there? What are its best signature activities? And what
are the travel requirements
for Indonesian passport holders?
Dear Ibu Ivonne,
In the spirit of the latin
phrase, meaning something
for something, we at
dREAMSCAPE welcome
your input and observations,
and are more than happy to
answer any questions you
should have.
Travelling to Cuba has just got a little
easier. However, you will still need
to visit with a licensed tour operator
due to a few restrictions still applying.
That said, and with liberalization
unfolding in the country, it’s an
especially exciting time to be there.
Let the dREAMSCAPE team help you
to interact with local Cuban musicians,
businesspeople, students, artists at
studios, museums, restaurants, and
schools, gaining valuable insights
into the progression of Cuban art and
politics through the country’s history.
Then venture into the beautiful,
multiethnic Viñales Valley, a World
Heritage Site, experience life on a
family tobacco farm, and sample
traditional Cuban dishes in the homes
of welcoming locals. Indonesian
passport holders must apply for a
Cuban tourist visa valid for one single
entrance for a 30-day trip. While
commercial flights with US airlines to
Cuba will be open only from summer
2016, the best way to travel to Cuba is
still via the chartered flights available.
Please let us know if we can have the
pleasure of arranging your exciting trip
to Cuba.
Mr. Benny P
Would a cruise be an interesting
option to take my wife for a holiday?
We are both in our 30s and I have
heard that cruises are often for
retirees. What do you think?
Dear Mr. Benny P,
Interestingly, this is also the question I asked
myself before I fell in love with cruises. As I
discovered, cruises are fun for all ages. The first
thing to consider before taking a cruise is the
duration. For younger travellers I would suggest
a maximum of seven nights sailing. This is the
perfect number as you will have enough time to
explore as the cruise ship takes you from one
stop to another. Less than seven nights and you
will have fewer places to visit, unless you’re
heading for a nearer destination, or cruising on
a river. The secondly thing to consider is the
destination. Sometimes unique experiences
can be found in unexpected destinations.
Cruise itineraries offer calls at major cities
and picturesque villages, all of which will be
regional highlights, so you don't have to do
the research on the best places to visit in an
unfamiliar destination. Try to find exotic places
such as sailing on the Amazon River, or openwater snorkelling and boating in the Galapagos
Islands. Last but not least, avoid the standard
city tours unless they offer VIP access as a
privilege to places it is hard to access on your
own. Several cruises offer shore excursions
as an additional tour, and if you are not sure
what to choose do not hesitate to consult your
travel advisor to ask what is an authentic thing
to do or what should not be missed. Collect as
many experience as possible from the offered
activities during your free time. Unless you
choose the cruises with activities included in
the price, make sure that you are choosing a
cruise offering authentic experiences.

and, on top of that, Ubud is a convenient
location for kids to try cycling on the numerous
paths.
Where should I go and what should
we do as a family with small children
aged six and eight to introduce soft
adventure into the children’s lives
Another memorable choice is encounters
with animals and wildlife. Visiting orangutans
in Kalimantan offers a chance to see the
endangered animals close by in their natural
habitat, and many opportunities to get to know
other wildlife, from birds to plants.
for a long weekend?
Dear Ms. Ratna Indri
As young kids have a lot of energy, I would
recommend a place where there is enough
space and a variety of activities available – all
kids are different! Domestic destinations in
Indonesia have lots to offer, but I wouldn’t be
afraid of longer international travel as well.
Hands-on activities, such as planting trees or
making food from vegetables and herbs they
have picked from the local gardens, give the
children the chance to learn by doing while
engaging just as much as they feel like.
The Green School in Bali is one great example
Water activities are widespread, and the
best beach resorts around Indonesia offer
supervised snorkelling and the first step to
diving – bubble making!
Once the kids are used to such activities and
enjoy spending time in the open air, I would
also encourage you to try longer travels:
unforgettable boat and sea life experiences in
the calm waters of the Maldives, skiing on the
powdery snow of Hokkaido in Japan, or real
adventures in South Africa that have specially
designed kid safaris in Malaria free areas!

CANVAS DREAMS AT AMANWANA
CANVAS DREAMS AT AMANWANA
A luxury tent resort in Indonesia? The off
the wall description definitely captured my
imagination. As an Aman resort - a brand that
represents both quality and luxury - I imagine
being delightfully secluded, set in a wilderness
hideaway while sipping champagne and being
truly pampered. But the big question was:
would I get enough adventure or would this be
a “veg and do nothing” style of journey?
GLORIOUS ISOLATION CAMPING
UNDER THE STARS IN THE LAP
OF LUXURY
Untitled map
Untitled layer
Mojo Island
Feeling adventurous, when I first caught a
glimpse of the tent from afar as the boat
gradually approached, part of me wanted to
jump into the ocean and swim straight to it.
After all, this is an Aman resort, famous for its
“we do what we can to make our guest happy”
attitude. So why not let the Aman team deal
with all my bags while I say hello to my natural
home for the next days? See you at my tent,
and please bring a bottle of wine with you I
fantasized. Ah, maybe next time!
Greeted by the General Manager of the resort,
another signature of the Aman style, I finally
Amanwana - a peaceful forest - first opened
in 1993 on the island of Moyo. Getting to the
remote island is quite an experience: after an
overnight stop in Bali, I took a one-hour flight
to Sumbawa island with Transnusa, before
finally boarding the Aman luxury cruise to
plough across the sea for another 45 minutes.
On the boat I expected, and received, nothing
less than the quintessential Aman service travelling in luxury with free flow drinks and
snacks.
The mood was very pleasant; each second of
the journey fuelled my imagination, piquing my
excitement to try this one of a kind luxury tent
resort, the only one in Indonesia. The guests
were all smiling, laughing, definitely feeling the
same!
22
www . dreamscapeluxurytravel . com
meet the tent that has been haunting my
imagination for the past few weeks, days and
nights. And yes, technically it was a tent, with
a canopy roof. But it also had a shower and
electricity, and a small fridge, two basins, a
beautiful double bed, a couple of sofas and a
bowl of succulent tropical fruit, just like you
would find in a luxury hotel.
Lounging in my luxury tent, I gazed across the
crystal water of the Flores Sea. Camping has
surely changed from my early days. Far away
from the incessant drumbeat of work and urban
life, it was how a camp should be. Amanwana
has no swimming pool, no loud jet-skis, no cars
or motorbikes exist on the isle and there are no
daily routines or set mealtimes to stick to.
My new friends, the lizards, the monkeys,
and the deer found their way to greet me.
Although the natural setting is definitely at its
best, for the adventurous freak like myself, I
pondered whether without activities to keep
me occupied; this exotic holiday could turn into
mind-numbing boredom.
Gladly, Amanwana allayed all my fears, and it
is definitely worthy of the cover story of the
dREAMSCAPE adventure edition. The pace of
life at this resort can be as fast or as slow as
you want it to be - enough to yearn to return
and fulfil some of the unfinished fantasies
flowing through my head during my stay. Until
next time, Amanwana!

Macao International
Fireworks Display Contest
Naadam Festival 2016
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
La Tomatina. Valencia, Spain
The legendary Film Festival de Cannes,
considered the most prestigious film festival
in the world, celebrates its 69th incarnation
presided over by Australian director George
Miller, creator of the Mad Max films and director
of their recent reboot, the multiple Oscarwinning Fury Road.
Every July, Mongolians come together to
measure their strength and skill during
Naadam, or the Manly Games, pitting men
(and women) against each other in “The Three
Games of Men” - wrestling (men only), horse
racing, and archery. Reward yourself with a
unique glimpse into the past of a Nomadic
society.
La Tomatina is a festival held in the
Valencian town of Buñol, 19 miles from
the Mediterranean, in which participants
throw tomatoes at each other as a form of
entertainment rather than aggression. Since
1945 it has been held on the last Wednesday of
August, during the week of festivities at Buñol.
For fans of colourful pyrotechnics, whizbangs
and explosions of a myriad of colours in the sky
(plus plenty of ear-splitting bangs) the annual
Macao International Fireworks Display Contest
is one of the best of its kind, and takes place on
the Macau Tower Shorefront. More than 100
international teams from China, the Philippines,
Thailand, Chinese Taiwan, Japan, Korea,
Australia, the UK, Switzerland, France, Germany,
Portugal and Spain have participated in this
world-class pyrotechnic shoot-out.
Although the Film Festival de Cannes is
reserved for film industry professionals, limited
access can still be available if you have the right
channel. Watch the screening of films out of
competition and Cannes Classics under the
stars.
Join the Mongols to enjoy the most widely
watched festival, Naadam. The festival kicks
off in Ulaanbaatar’s Sukhbaatar Square on July
11, with an elaborate introduction ceremony
featuring dancers, athletes, horse riders, and
musicians. Then have a taste of the activities
with locals outside the capital city.
Crazy enough for Spain’s messiest party? The
blood red battle lasts for an hour, after which
the whole town square is covered with tomato
paste. The Tomatina is basically about throwing
tomatoes at each other. Five bulbous, tomatopacked rockets are sent whistling into the sky to
start the festival of La Tomatina. Pick some of
the “squashed” tomatoes and just throw them.
It´s fun and, after all, you only live once!
Take a front seat with your love ones in your
suite to watch the colourful showcase in the sky
with VIP hospitality included - private butler,

Most of the luxury hotels during the Cannes
Film Festival have been reserved for a who’s
who of Hollywood’s best and brightest
stars. Although it is not impossible to get a
room - if money is no object - an alternative
recommendation is to book a luxury apartment
or villa nearby - and let dREAMSCAPE’s VIP
chauffeur take you to the venue in style.
Book early for 2016 Naadam festival. The
Mongolia Government is hosting the ASEM
11 (Asia-European Meeting) on July 10-18,
with over 50 heads of state, and most of the
hotels and roads have been blocked to secure
the international event. Give the rural Naadam
festival outside of Ulaanbaatar a try. It’s less
people and you will have better opportunities
to mingle with the locals. Check with
dREAMSCAPE’s consultant team for the fixed
schedule of the events, near your travel dates.
Arrive one day prior to La Tomatina, as
international visitors party all night before the
event once they arrive in town. Wear closed
shoes that you do not mind throwing away
afterwards. Do not wear flip-flops. You may find
goggles useful. Do not miss the Palojabon - a
greased pole with a Spanish ham at the top.
Whoever can climb the pole and get the ham
can keep it!
Every long weekend starting September 3 until
October 1 for the 2016 schedule. The annual
Fireworks Carnival, running on each of the five
days during the Macau fireworks festivities, is
spiced up further with traditional music, food
and drink. The best vantage points for this
explosions of colour include: The Macau Tower
and the waterfront at its base; The Peninsula
side, especially Penha Hill; the Macau-Taipa
bridge; and parts of Taipa itself. Or book
your VIP deluxe and suite rooms, watch the
explosions first class.
Walk the famous red carpet as the stars come
out to celebrate the movie that opens the
annual film festival. Last year’s film, The Great
Gatsby, saw Director Baz Luhrmann and stars
like Leonardo DiCaprio, Amitabh Bachchan
and Jay-Z walk the carpet. Price starts IDR
264,160,000/US$20,100 per person for the
opening ceremony and one VIP party. Package
excludes accommodation and other VIP travel
logistics.
11 days/10 nights, luxury private journeys
with an experienced Mongolian guide

family, sing and dance with the locals during
the Naadam festival, ride a horse, and much
more.

totally crazy. It is totally wild. It's out of control
and an unbelievably fun experience. Quality 5*

carnage that is the fiesta La Tomatina with a

An awesome aquatic
adventure in New Zealand
and Australia mixing
rafting, jet boats, deep-sea
fishing at the Great Barrier
Reef, sailing and taking to
the skies with an actionpacked helicopter ride
Did the adventure in New Zealand
exceed what you imagined ?
Yes, I had never, ever imagined riding in a
helicopter or rafting in New Zealand.
What did you like most
during your visit in New Zealand?
Bagus Pekik, is the General Manager
Marketing of Charoen Pokphand Indonesia
based in Jakarta, a company who entertains
its top clients with dREAMSCAPE services.
He says their clients are into adventures, "so
dREAMSCAPE just solely gives us that - an
adventurous time of our lives."
34
www . dreamscapeluxurytravel . com
The most interesting adventures in New
Zealand for me were the rafting and the jet
boats. The rafting was so good, I can highly
recommended it. We went through caves, a
high difficulty waterfall, and the water was so
cold.
But I was impressed that safety is a very, very
top priority - before we went to the waterfall
the team checked from the top of the hill that
everything was safe. We felt very secure and
safe, without losing any of the challenges to our
sense of adventure.
You went deep-sea fishing at the
Great Barrier Reef.
Have you experience deep-sea
fishing before?
Yes, but only in in the ocean around Indonesia
at Pulau Seribu – Pelabuhan Ratu.
What was the hardest thing to learn
about fishing?
Deep sea fishing is quite challenging, because if
you catch a big fish, it takes some effort to reel
the fish in and pull it out of the water. You must
have excellent physical strength.

What was the highlight of your trip
to the Great Barrier Reef?
The Great Barrier Reef has huge fish, but if
we caught a small fish the regulations say we
should release it again. It’s very different in
Indonesia, where we can catch and keep big or
small fish.
Is there anything you experienced
that you would not like to repeat?
Well, I will never forget the experience where
we reeled in only the fish head. The captain
said that a bigger fish must have already eaten
the rest. I can’t imagine what that bigger fish
was and if we could catch one. Perhaps it was a
shark.
You went sailing off Sydney. Have
you ever experienced deep-sea
sailing before?
Never, sailing there was my first time sailing.
Describe your feelings sailing for
the first time?
I just had this feeling that when sleeping my
position could go from laying down to standing
up to upside down!
What is the highlight of the sailing
trip?
The boat can tilt by 45 degrees, and it did! It
was awesome. It’s not easy to be a sailor (like
Popeye), even it’s only wind power. Perhaps,
that’s why Popeye has big arms…

ARTS AND FASHION DESIGN
Music and singing
At the school’s purpose-built Art Centre with specialist classrooms, and an art and design studio, highly qualified teachers
encourage and instruct the students to express themselves
through drawing, painting and sculpture.
The music courses help students unlock their
potential, whatever their musical background
and whatever part they wish music to play in

“Enjoyment through achievement” is a phrase
Students interested in fashion design have the opportunity to
participate in design courses that teach the idea development
process from inspiration to a complete design project, including
sketch-books, mood boards and fashion illustration.
For those interested in developing their projects into actual
garments, students can develop their pattern cutting and sewing
skills with teachers available to provide one-to-one support
throughout the process.
that sums up the philosophy of the courses,
and earning an ABRSM (Associated Board of
the Royal College of Music) certificate is indeed
perceived as a rewarding experience, providing
students with a real sense of accomplishment.
Clubs and Committees
Joining a club or a committee has many benefits - from finding new friends who
share the same passions and developing one's social skills, to discovering new
interests or even working on one's leadership abilities.
While the list of clubs on offer vary with our pupils' special interests and
commitment three are at the heart of the Rosenberg club “culture” – the Student
Committee; the Culture Club; and the Charity Committee.
These clubs, assisted by competent advisors, generate ideas, organise programmes
and implement projects which all serve good causes.
Many extra-curricular activities are offered free of charge as part of the school’s
programme and include all on-campus sport activities. Private lessons, e.g. in special
sports disciplines or music lessons at the request of a student, as well as larger
excursions like skiing trips will be charged extra.

The Rosenberg Ball
The annual Rosenberg Ball is one of the
highlights in the school’s social calendar, and
serves not only as a creative outlet for students,
but an opportunity to practice public speaking,
perform in front of a large audience, work in
teams and experience group and leadership
dynamics outside the classroom.
Parents, family members, friends and alumni
from all over the world travel to St. Gallen each
year to witness inspiring student performances
and acknowledge their achievements.
Coached by professionals, most students
participate in demanding rehearsals from
September to November following their daily
academic lessons. Setting aside the glamorous
aspect of the ball, it is a platform for the Institut’s
students to gather life-learning experiences in a
safe and controlled environment.

Competitions
The school holds seasonal competitions - tennis
tournaments in the summer and skiing races in
the winter. On dedicated sports days, students
compete against each other in various athletic
track and field disciplines. The school’s football
team regularly plays “friendlies’ against the team
from St. Gallen University.
Orienteering, where students need to work in
teams and find their way by using maps, is another competition which is hugely popular with the
Rosenberg students.
A rather more Swiss adventure and fun event
takes the students to the countryside where they
sleep in the hay and compete against each other
the next day during cow races.
Famous Instructors
‘Gallus Fish’
Every year, around 200 students (from grade
1 to grade 9) from the city of St. Gallen and
surrounding areas compete against each
other for the title of fastest swimmer. The
competition covers two distances - 25m and
50m, respectively. The five fastest students in
each category compete for the title in the grand
final. Students from Institut auf dem Rosenberg
proudly represent their school on an annual basis
and have managed to bring home the coveted
trophy twice already.

The sports coaches include a former rowing

INSIDE THE LUXURY TRAVEL
INSIDE THE LUXURY TRAVEL
The routes are checked on a regular basis,
mostly to guarantee the conditions of the
terrain and if any changes have been made.
How fit do your customers have to be?
Our clients don’t need to be extremely fit. For
our leisure, family tours one only needs to be
used to doing just regular exercise. Otherwise
they will feel obviously tired! If you’re planning
on active vacations, a walk or bike ride for half
an hour or an hour two days a week before your

the exercise and will make you a lot happier!
We have a lot of couples where the husband is

52
www . dreamscapeluxurytravel . com
Founded in 2012 by André Martins and Ricardo Gonzalez,
Bike Tours Portugal was born out of the desire to explore
something that was lacking in Portugal: a luxury approach
to bike tours. Where once there were just entry-level
options, today there are locally managed, true-to-roots
premium experiences for bike lovers from all around the
globe.
What sort of support services
do you offer?
From the moment the client arrives at Portugal
for our bike tours, we take care of all details,
starting at the airport pick up, and, if necessary,
we also take care of pre- and post-tour days.
What makes "Luxury on two wheels"
special and unforgettable for your
customers?
Besides the equipment that we have,
our customized trailer with restroom and
kitchen, the fact that we can organize a
picnic with proper tableware in the middle
of the countryside as if you were sitting at a
restaurant. What makes it so “Luxury on Two
Wheels” is the special team we work with, from
the backoffice to the attention of our guides.
We are always available to our clients and we
give all the attention to every detail or special
request that we need to consider. If our guide
sees someone biking with a lower back, they
go and check with them to adjust the bike. If
they’re not feeling confortable with the terrain
or want extra or less miles, we are also able to
change the itinerary on the spot and adjust it.
If the client wants to visit a special place, or
needs help in other aspects of their trip to
Portugal that no longer include bikes (buying
train tickets, booking a hotel or restaurant),
we end up providing a true concierge service
making every client feel unique.
What inspired you to come up with the Luxury on
Two Wheels concept?
What inspired us was our passion for biking and the
idea of knowing the country in such a honest and true
way, truly connected with nature, but at the same time,
wanting to finish off the day in a nice atmosphere,
enjoying good food and exceptional accommodation. We
felt the need to blend in the passion of both of them: for
the country, for cycling and for the food and the cooking
and slowly the concept evolved to “Luxury on Two
Wheels.”
How do you come up with the routes, and are
they checked regularly?
We design the routes considering a number of interests:
the beauty of the region itself (points of interest, culture,
gastronomy, views); the type of terrain and difficulty; the
quality of the hotels nearby.

What length of stay would you
recommend for visitors to truly
experience South Africa?
With the world class facilities South Africa
offers, the fact that you’ll find it easy to get
around, and the ease with which you can
connect between major cities and regional
towns, for a well-deserved holiday with all the
thrills and fun, I would advised two weeks.
What do you think would be most
rewarding and stimulating for
visitors from Southeast Asia and
Indonesia?
Diverse experiences of the ultimate
combination of nature, wildlife, culture,
adventure, heritage and vibe. We can guarantee
that you’re spoilt for choice. In South Africa,
you can enjoy world-class luxury facilities,
whether you opt for Afro-chic or authentic
Africa. Great weather invites you to enjoy the
outdoors, play golf all year round and take
advantage of the nearly 3,000 kilometres of
coastline.

For a two week trip, you can: enjoy stunning
views across Cape Town from the top of Table
Mountain; explore the Cape Peninsula and the
Winelands on two full day private escorted
tours; search for the Big Five on a luxury safari
in a private game reserve; view the incredible
natural wonder of Victoria Falls; take a tour
around Soweto and the Apartheid Museum
in Johannesburg to learn more about South
Africa's history.
What other destinations would you
recommend?
South Africa is blessed with spectacular scenery
and natural landscapes - soaring mountain
peaks and passes, dense and ancient forests,
miles of unspoiled coastline, rivers to sooth
or thrill you, and rolling flower fields and
grasslands of every hue. Places to be still,
places to inspire you, places to explore or to
simply revel in the joyous gift of nature.
uKhahlamba-Drakensberg houses a treasure
trove of an estimated 35,000 examples of
San rock paintings, is home to protected
plant and animal species, and contains a highaltitude, RAMSAR-accredited wetland system.
There are many mountain ranges, none more
impressive than KwaZulu-Natal's 200km-long
uKhahlamba-Drakensberg escarpment.
Magnificent marine life. Whether you
visit South Africa’s whale-watching capital
Hermanus or choose a scenic spot along the
Garden Route or Wild Coast, seeing these
marine giants in their natural environment
wither from land or a boat is an experience
that you won’t want to miss. From June until
November, southern white whales are highly
visible along the Cape south coast, making this
the perfect time of year for a whale-watching
trip.
Cultural encounters. Whether you spend a
day in a Zulu village or a city township; a week
in a Xhosa household or escape to a typical
South African farm, you’ll find South Africans
are friendly and their day-to-day lifestyles and
customs accessible. Short or long stay – you’re
welcome!
Wine tasting. With wine regions stretching
from the western to the far northern Cape and
the edge of the Karoo you can almost taste
your way around South Africa. Sample at wellknown estates or seek out little-known gems
– our Port and Brandy routes are renowned
too. Where there’s fabulous wine, great food is
never far behind. Oenophiles, gastronomes and
sybarites – don’t miss our winelands.
What about other cultural aspects –
can you recommend any particular
festivals and events?
Relax and enjoy the lifestyle, South Africa has
a lively cultural life and many opportunities
to meet the locals, be it at a jazz festival, in
nightclubs or at our premier horse race. For
those who want a more relaxed holiday, there
are plenty of places to wind down and be
pampered.

Malay cooks, who arrived in the Cape colony
as slaves from the mid-17th century onwards,
created what is arguably one of South Africa’s
most popular meat dishes in the form of

egg custard and baked).
Durban in Kwa-Zulu Natal is renowned for its

indentured Indian labourers were brought

Durban without tasting a bunny chow (a half
loaf of bread hollowed out and filled with curry)
is almost unthinkable.
What about adventure tourism?
Table Mountain.
Adventure Tourism in South Africa means to
take your adrenalin glands on a joyride whether

and there are numerous activities on offer
in Graskop, Hazyview and Sabie, including

quad biking in the forests and canoeing on the

There is lots of choice in the Western Cape –
go diving with great white sharks in Gansbaai,
mountain-biking in the Cedarberg or hiking up
The Northern Cape offers 4x4 trails in
the Richtersveld, extreme activities at the
Augrabies Falls and shipwreck diving along the
desolate coastline. For those visiting Gauteng
you can bridge swing at the Orlando Cooling
Towers, sand board down a mine dump or go
caving at the Cradle of Humankind.
Limpopo is known for its challenging Ivory
Route 4x4 trail and numerous outdoor
activities in the bush, while the Free State is
home to the Golden Gate Highlands National

safaris in the Maluti Mountains on offer close

Township cuisine features dishes like shisa
nyama (braaied meat), chakalaka (hot pickle),
and mngqusho (samp and beans).
Boerewors, a coiled sausage usually made of
beef and pork and spiced with coriander, is
another iconic South African food with as many
regional and cultural variations as there are
braai (barbecue) fires on which to sizzle it. In
fact, cooking over the coals of an open fire is
something that unites all cultural groups in this
country.
Other iconic South African foods retain a strong
sense of place. The Western Cape is the place
to sample dishes like smoorsnoek (a kind of
kedgeree made from snoek, a line fish common
in Cape waters) and waterblommetjiebredie
(a stew of lamb and flowers of an indigenous
pondweed).

Chill out and relax
in style cruising
Kalimantan’s rivers on
a traditional phinisi boat
while the boat departs and cruises along the
river. Relaxing with a view and a breath of fresh
air gets you in the holiday mood fast after the
early morning flight.
Overall tip: The best experience of the
river cruise is during the rainy season when
the water levels are high and the real jungle
experience comes through. A good guide is
key for orangutan spotting and getting the
most out of local villager encounters, as most
only speak local languages. The food options
are limited, thus the cook on board will make
a big difference. Good for a family or group of
friends to get away for a long weekend.
There are three types of cabin on the boat, two
with air-conditioning, but space is limited. The
best choice is the large ensuite with private
bathroom so there is enough space to move
around after unpacking your luggage. Having
warm water in the shower is a definite plus!

Palangka Raya harbour to start your journey.

In the early evening, take a canoe through the
shimmering black water lakes. Keep an eye out
for proboscis monkeys, hornbills, and Brahmini
kites. Return to the boat for a quiet dinner in
the midst of the jungle.

you board the boat, don’t forget to greet the
curious local crowd who gather to watch the

Tip: The first thing you should do on
arriving, even before unpacking, is spend some
time on the sundeck sipping morning coffee
Comment: The canoe ride is an adventure
in itself! At first we thought our weight would
sink the boat, but it held nicely. We passed
local villagers going about their daily routines
in floating houses, and local fishermen in
similar boats close by. Although there were no
other tourists around, we received a cheerful

were expecting to see the orangutans close up
and perhaps even have the chance to touch

invited to be part of a local wedding celebration
with the whole village! All the food and the
warm welcome would have kept us there for
hours. The dancers wore traditional clothes
and the drumming meant we soon joined in
for some of the more simple moves. We will
definitely be going back for the annual Dayak

Tip: Keep an eye out for the illegal gold
mining on the river - local people have very few
industries to rely on for income.
The boat moves up the Rungan River as
you enjoy breakfast. On arrival at Bapallas

orangutans.
Comment: Finally, we went to see the
orangutans! Since they are being introduced
back to the wild on inhabited river islands, we
had to wait in the boat for a while to detect
their locations by movements in the trees and
sounds. Luckily, our guide had a professional
eye and we were able to get a look at them
while they climbed the trees. One of them

stopped and stared at us for half an hour
through the bush! They were obviously as
curious of us as we were of them.
Later, the trip continued to the other islands
for feeding time. The newer hosted primates
that were still being schooled to hunt for food
came for the bananas on the beach. The first
to come was the alpha-male, escorted by a
couple of others and small monkeys. Luckily he
took his time and we got to admire the majestic
figure and take photos. What followed was a
game of hide-and-seek between the rest of the
orangutans and the monkeys, all trying to get
their share.
Tip: It can get quite hot while waiting for the
orangutans, so make sure you have a hat with
you or ask for one from the boat crew.
Then continue to the BOSF Education Centre
where adult orangutans are waiting to be
placed on the pre-release islands. Learn about
the BOSF’s rehabilitation programs.
Comment: This was the closest we got to
the orangutans. It was really astonishing to see
how similar their expressions and behaviours
are to humans. They were making faces at the
Tip: When changing locations in the village,
opt for a half an hour of walking instead of a
car. On the way you will see more local village
life and learn about the plants that grow around
the area. To our surprise we found some wild
pineapple bushes and “kacang mede” (cashew)
trees.
Comment: This was another highlight
of the trip. Aside from the elder’s house we
had a chat with probably one of the oldest
ladies in the village at her home – talking
about her hobby of crafting bamboo baskets
and traditional patterned carpets. We couldn’t
believe all the work, patience and precision
that goes into basket making. We gave it a try
ourselves, but despite her teaching we did not
progress nearly as fast, and it would take us a
month to produce a basket.

TO THE TOP
OF THE WORLD
• Fly in to one of the most remote and extraordinary expedition base camps in the world
• Reach the top of the world by Antonov AN-74 aircraft and Mi8 helicopter
dREAMSCAPE VIP HANDPICKED
One of the unique thrills of this expedition is
landing on the ice runway at Barneo, a temporary
air strip constructed on the polar ice cap each
year, and the only facility that allows external
access to the base. Shortly after arriving at camp,
lunch will be served and an introductory briefing
will be given. Barneo is a functioning research
base for scientists and it's always a hive of
activity with fascinating guests.
North Pole
Destination - North Pole. After breakfast,
prepare for the 30 minute helicopter flight to
the northernmost point on earth. At the North
Pole there is only ice and the Arctic Ocean is
approximately 2.5 miles (4 km) deep at this point.
Weather conditions are closely monitored, and
the flight will be scheduled accordingly. The
aim will be to land at 90° north. Once there,
it is time to savour the moment. You will have
approximately an hour to have a celebratory
drink, walk around the world, and take photos
before returning to camp.
Back at base there will be lectures about polar
exploration, North Pole expeditions and climate
science. Feast on a hearty hot lunch. Later this
evening, after a celebration dinner, learn more
about the history, geography and wildlife of the
area. Presentation topics range from the first
intentional drifting ice station, to arctic mammals
including walrus, ringed seals, ribbon seals and
polar bears. Tonight, receive a certificate from
the Russian Geographical Society Expedition
Centre, certifying you have reached the
Geographic North Pole.
• Learn first-hand about the scientific and research activities being conducted at this research station
• Explore the unique culture of Longyearbyen, Norway before the base camp

THERE’S

by Philippe Capezzone
So, what’s the attraction of
Courchevel, and Hotel Kilimandjaro
and K2, for travellers?
As part of our adventure theme, we
sat down with Philippe Capezzone,
the owner and developing force
behind the K1 and K2 hotels in
Courchevel - one of the most
expensive skiing areas in the world
- to discover his vision and learn
why he builds and runs his luxury
adventure experiences.
74
www . dreamscapeluxurytravel . com
I think it’s a mistake to sell the ski resorts
solely only for advanced skiers. Today you
want to target people who don’t know how to
ski, but then learn to ski, and find the beauty
of skiing, and combine this with gastronomic
delights - there are six Michelin two stars in
Courchevel. I think there are many clients who
want to travel like this. Another important
factor is the shopping. If you don’t know how
to ski, it doesn’t matter. Outside of skiing, we
sell fresh air and nature. We combine skiing,
lifestyle and food.

OWNER POTRAIT
OWNER POTRAIT
You specialize in chalets, how did
that come about?
I never liked big buildings. Chalets have a
human size. And the materials play around
rocks and wood - you have to adjust to
nature. A chalet has roots for a family. Before
becoming a ski chalet, people used to live
here, a family. People have a chalet, with the
animals, they farm, it’s a way of life. I didn’t
feel it was interesting to build big buildings like
apartments. Family and nature are important as
they give you quality of life.
How did you end up with Tibet as
your main theme for K2?
How long did it take you to learn
the hotel business?
How did you get into the hotel
business?
I was a property developer, building many chalets.
We have roughly 60 chalets in Courchevel. I
developed chalet concepts and had my own
construction company. Some 18 years after it
was first built, the whole Kilimandjaro Hotel
was for sale, and my company bought it. We
bought it because we wanted to build chalets,
but in the end we decided to be a hotel. Back
then we didn’t know the hotel business when
we started, but our concept was chalets which
are run like hotel bedrooms.
I surrounded myself with fantastic people in
the beginning, trusted people, people from the
hotel business. This is where I learned to be a
hotelier. I didn’t want to go into hotels to copy,
I wanted to develop, decorate, be an architect,
and make my own service. When you build
something, you need to build your soul. When
you start something, you need to make it your
signature.
76
www . dreamscapeluxurytravel . com
The hotel business, you never learn totally. You
need to improve all the time. I love another of
my hobbies. I fly helicopters. I compare it to the
hotel business. After 10 years of being a pilot, I
still learn new things everyday. You have to be
humble and be open to new things, you need to
learn new things, you need to learn forever. The
day you don’t learn new things, you’re finished.
If something is too easy, I don’t want to go into
it.
My first hotel is K1 – Kilimandjaro, from Africa.
The name was already there. So, for the second
hotel, I thought, which name is not too far
from that? K2 is a mountain in Tibet. If you
build an apartment on a mountain, you don’t
want it to look like it’s in New York. Tibet is
on a high summit, in a mountain area, so K2
and Tibet seemed perfect for the second hotel
at Courchevel. We then started to develop
the concept of Tibet, did the research, hired a
designer – a French designer. The décor is more
of my wife’s concern, the designer and the
team.
I met one of my clients who is one of the UK’s
top richest. He wanted to buy a chalet, but at
55 he was not sure if he could continue to ski.
He asked me if I had anything, so I told him
that in few months I would let him know. Then
I sold him two chalets at Courchevel. There,
even when he is 80 years old, he can still ski,
because Courchevel has that flat easy going
area up to advanced. Plenty of space to move
and ski to everyone’s skills.
When you build something, you need to feel
the energy of the area. When I bought the K2,
it was a forest. I knew this place was a good
place. I feel the energy; I feel I’m at the right
place. People told me that the area is on the
side of the mountain, so you don’t have the sun
the whole day. But I don’t care; it’s the view
that counts. You will be outdoors anyway. You
have the energy, that was the blessing. The
view is the most important thing.
I saw the mountain turn orange, and felt
“WOW!” In the morning you see the sun.
I feel it’s the right place to develop a project.

which constantly strives to satisfy and amaze
its visitors.
The Fun Park - a fun and easy natural canyon to
be enjoyed without reserve (level: 1st star); The
Stop Zone - an area to learn about speed and
stopping distances; The Indian Trail - activities
around an Indian camp with Grey Wolf and
his tribe (tepees, archery, face painting, etc.);
Snake Park - fun and accessible boarder-cross
run; Avalanche Park - an area to raise skiers’
awareness of avalanches and techniques for
searching for victims beneath avalanches;
Wood Park: an area equipped with wooden
modules (rails, tables) for discovering freestyle;
and the Family Park – a snowpark equipped
with a boardercross run, rails, tables and jumps.
Courchevel should be discovered village by
village. There are five of them, which reveal
themselves to visitors as they wind their way up
the pretty mountain road.
Courchevel is multi-faceted with five villages,
and five distinct atmospheres. The resort is
spread over five altitudes and each village
presents a different face, offers a different
view and a different way of approaching
the mountain. The vast array of non-skiing
activities is another plus point for a resort
Saint Bon, the birthplace of Courchevel, and the
original village, at an altitude of 1,100m. The
Lac Bleu, the first hotel to be built in the resort,
has been welcoming guests since 1925. While
there are no ski lifts leaving from the village, a
free shuttle service runs every 20 minutes to
the heart of the ski area from where skiers can
return to Saint Bon along a red ski run.
Courchevel 1300 (Le Praz), has a discreet
charm as an authentic mountain village with its
traditional houses, chalets and narrow streets,
preserving its incredible charm and real village
life village feel which is very much in evidence
365 days a year. It is the bastion of ski jumping
with its majestic Olympic jumps. As for alpine
skiing, those who enjoy skiing through forests
will love the run linking Le Praz directly with
Courchevel 1850.
Courchevel 1550, a young spirit which is the
most family oriented offering excellent value
for money, fast and direct access to Courchevel
1850, as well as the whole of Les Trois Vallees
ski area. The toboggan run, which leaves from
1850 and finishes in 1550, is a thrilling ride for
adults and children alike!
Courchevel 1650 (Moriond). The first ski tow
was created in Moriond (the original name of
this level of the resort), a sector which basks
in the sun thanks to its location on a ledge set
back from the relief. The ski area of Courchevel
1650 is predominantly made up of green
and blue runs. The combination of these two
features makes the resort particularly popular
with families. Conviviality is the order of the
day and the après-ski is particularly appreciated
thanks to the wide variety of activities on offer!
Courchevel 1850, is one big superlative. The
rich and famous flock to this most exclusive
level which has sealed the resort’s international
reputation, with luxury hotels whose excellence
has imbued the whole resort.

A Finer Touch
at Mandapa,
A Ritz-Carlton

M
assage is best known for healing and
reinvigorating the mind and body. But
what is not commonly known is that
some of the best massage therapists in the
industry are actually blind.
Losing the ability to see most often enhances
and magnifies other senses, especially touch.
But finding a good blind therapist among all the
qualified professionals available is not so easy.
Without the ability to see, a blind massage
therapist channels his or her energy to the
client. You feel their attention is solely given
to you. And amazingly, it feels like they are
transmitting their energy to the massage
recipient.
A blind therapist also focuses more on using
pressure points, including the body's ligaments,
tendons, muscles, joints, skin and some
connective tissue for greater effectiveness.
But dREAMSCAPE is pleased to reveal massage
by the blind at Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve
in Ubud, Bali.
In theory, a blind masseur or masseuse does
not work any differently from those who can
see, they use the same technique. The key
difference is not in the treatment method, but
the sensitivity of their hands.
The therapist cannot rely on visual cues to
see if a patient is flinching, instead they sense
it through how the body reacts, which is
much more instantaneous. And it makes a big
difference.

ADVENTURE
TRAVEL INSURANCE
People who go on adventure trips are a whole different breed of traveller. So, if you are a seeker of
adrenaline-fuelled outdoor challenges, you will need to look again the risk that comes with your
standard health and travel insurance.
Standard health and travel insurance policies will often cover some level of outdoor activity
- for example, camping, easy trekking and modest sports such as archery. But anything
slightly more extreme than this, such as climbing, jet skiing, scuba diving and zip lines
between trees (even with a safety harness) may often not be covered. And most
adventure operators will ask you to sign a disclaimer before undertaking any activity
– and this relinquishes the firm from responsibility rather than providing insurance
to protect you.
If, on reading the small print, you discover that your health and travel
insurance policy in terms of its risk does not fit your needs, our advice is
that you may also need to supplement your travel insurance plan with a
hazardous sports rider. The purpose is to provide you with coverage for
injuries sustained during activities that would otherwise be excluded
on your policy.
While it is always good practice to shop around for all kinds
of travel insurance - including sports adventure and extreme
sports travel insurance - your priority should be making sure
you are fully covered for all adventure activities, rather
than just snapping up the cheapest quote.
