Hardman In the 1920’s Dubose Heyward wrote, “Summertime and the livin’ is easy.” Hopefully that was the case for most of you and your families. In order to make that happen, however, there are a lot of people working hard around the City of Sharonville. Many of you spent time at our two local pools, our city parks and our ball fields over the past months. I offer my thanks to the permanent staff of our recreation department and the influx of seasonal workers who provided safe, clean and welcoming environments for your summertime play. A special thanks to all of our city employees and the Sharonville Sharks swim team who made Sharonville shine as the City hosted the Northern Suburban Swim League Swim Team Championships in mid-July. Kudos also to Festivals of Sharonville -- with collaboration from many City departments, they threw a fantastic “party with a purpose” for our entire community. Nothing easy about the orange barrels, though. Work will continue into the fall on Wyscarver Road, Reading Road, and several of your residential streets. As Princeton welcomes students into their brand new high school this fall, the City finishes up our first phase of work on making Chester Road a more inviting thoroughfare to our many regional visitors. Please drive with caution and join me in looking forward to the improved road conditions that will result. The City bid a farewell this summer to three of our long-time employees. Sergeant Brian Phillips and Officer James Levo celebrated their retirement from the Police Department and Denise Hinson retired from her post programming for our seniors at the Community Center. Their dedication to Sharonville, our residents and business community was appropriately commended with days named in their honor. Health Commissioner Dennis Propes also left Sharonville to pursue a new opportunity with the Miami County Public Health Department. With his departure, my administration began an inquiry of how the City provides public health services to our community. You can read more about the status of this review and how you can be involved in that discussion on our city website – www. sharonville.org. Of course, all of this is only a small part of what your City does in one season. I haven’t mentioned the weekly Cruise-Ins on the Loop, our Fourth of July Parade, Fair on the Square, Police Department sponsored neighborhood watch meetings, the Sharonville Fire Department Club golf outing, our new City of Sharonville entry signs, and the list could go on. But that’s what the pages of this booklet are for. Read up, see what we’ve done and what we are doing, and please feel free to offer your suggestions and comments to myself, our city staff, or any of your elected officials. I hope you enjoyed your summer and have a very pleasant autumn. Elected Officials Kevin M. Hardman, Mayor 769-4170 [email protected] Mark Piepmeier, Auditor 733-8276 [email protected] Vicki Hoppe, President of Council 478-2891 [email protected] Al Ledbetter, Treasurer 563-8513 [email protected] Ed Cunningham, Council Ward 1 405-6399 [email protected] Tom Keating, Law Director 234-7020 [email protected] David Koch, Council Ward 2 247-0146 [email protected] Matt Eggenberger, Council at Large 563-2079 [email protected] Kerry Rabe, Council Ward 3 702-8759 [email protected] Rob Tankersley, Council Ward 4 383-6580 [email protected] Greg Pugh, Council at Large 328-0349 [email protected] Paul Schmidt, Council at Large 563-4361 [email protected] The City’s Truck Loan Program for 2014 ends on October 31st. This program helps residents keep their property clean and gives them the ability to dispose of unwanted items from their property. Please call 563-1177 for information or to reserve a truck. There is a nominal fee for the use of the truck. Along with fall comes the chore of raking leaves. Public Works reminds Sharonville residents to bag their leaves and set them out for Rumpke to pick up. (Remember Rumpke has a 10 item limit) There is NO leaf pick up program for residents of Sharonville. RAKING LEAVES INTO THE STREET GUTTERS IS NOT PERMITTED because it will cause catch basins to back up and flood streets. Please rake leaves and put them in trash bags for pick up and disposal. If you have a storm culvert that runs along your property line or under your driveway, please remember that it is the homeowner’s responsibility to keep these culverts and the inlets clear of leaves and debris. Clogged culverts affect drainage upstream and flooding on roadways and surrounding areas. Winter snow and ice will be here before you know it. There are a few guidelines that residents can follow that will help our department maintain our roads in the best condition possible. During a snowstorm, please remove vehicles from the roadways, to allow for snow removal. The Public Works crew has very limited time to remove the snow in a major snowstorm and cars parked out in the roadway create additional obstacles and restrict visibility. We apologize for any inconvenience that the build-up of plowed snow causes along the road leading into driveways. Wherever practical, we will attempt to keep the snow build-up to a minimum. Unfortunately, due to limitations of time and manpower, we will not be able to remove plowed snow from in front of driveways. Ultimately, this is the responsibility of the homeowner. Please shovel snow responsibly, by not shoveling your snow into the roadway. Older residents and those with health problems are reminded to avoid the extreme physical activity associated with shoveling snow. Stay at least two car lengths behind a snow plow for every 10 mph you are traveling. Never cut in between a caravan of plows clearing a road. Beware of “black ice” (roads that look wet but actually are glazed with ice). Ramps and bridges freeze first. WINTER www.sharonville.org FALL Public Works REMINDER: As a result of winter snow, ice and salt comes the inevitable appearance of potholes and other unsafe conditions. Please notify Public Works of any curb, street, sidewalk or storm drainage problems in the City. The Public Works Department will attempt to correct the safety problems in a timely manner. The number to call is 563-1177. For more information, please visit the City’s website at http://www.sharonville.org/202/Snow-Removal 563-1177 4 BRUSH & SPECIAL PICKUP SERVICE Residents must call the Public Works office at 563-1177 before noon on Friday to have their name put on a list in order to have their items picked up the following week. Curbside Brush and Special Pickup is a year round program unless it is snowing and we are treating the roads. Have the materials out for removal on Sunday evening of the requested service week. Public Works will come to your address one day of the service week to remove the materials. Twigs cannot be picked up; they are yard waste and must be disposed of with your regular trash collection. Refrigerators, freezers and other appliances that contain chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerants must have the CFC removed from the appliance by a Certified Technician and have documentation attached to the appliance verifying that the CFC has been safely removed. Rumpke will then pick up the appliance on your normal trash pickup day. For more information, please visit the City’s website at http://www.sharonville.org/200/Garbage-Pickup RECYCLING: The City of Sharonville now provides FREE curbside recycling to home and condominium owners. Rumpke will collect recyclables every two weeks (trash collection remains at every week) on the same day as your trash collection. Please use the recycling container supplied by Rumpke. If you have not received a 96 gallon recycling cart or you are interested in upgrading your Rumpke container to a 96 gallon recycling cart, please call Rumpke Recycling at 513-851-0122 ext. 5176. Let’s all pitch in but pitch the right items. Recycling helps save the environment, create jobs, conserve resources, and save energy - Please help Sharonville by recycling!! For more information on recycling, please visit the city’s website at http://www.sharonville.org/203/Recycling Golden View Acres is a Senior Citizen Retirement Village. This 52 unit apartment complex is located on Greensfelder Lane off Thornview Drive. In order to be eligible for tenancy, a person must be at least 57 years of age and a Sharonville resident for at least one year; or be a parent, grandparent, brother or sister of a Sharonville resident who has resided in the City for one year. Golden View Acres has both first and second floor units and one and two bedroom apartments. Each apartment has an equipped kitchen with stove and refrigerator, gas heat, hot water, and air conditioning. Tenants pay their own utilities except water. There are coin operated laundry facilities in each of the three buildings. When renting an apartment an initial security deposit equaling one month's rent is required. After signing the lease, THE RENT WILL NOT BE RAISED unless an additional tenant occupies the same apartment or the current tenant moves to another apartment in the complex. At that time, a new rental agreement is then drawn up at the current rate. To be placed on a WAITING LIST to rent an apartment, written application must be made and a $50 fee deposited. This fee is refundable when you rent an apartment or request, in writing, to be taken from the Waiting List. 563-1177 GOLDEN VIEW ACRES: For additional information, contact the Public Works Department at 513-563-1177 week days between 8:30 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. 5 Community Fire Department Center www.sharonville.org www.sharonville.org 563-2895 563-0252 6 Chief Robert J. Yeager Memorial Scholarship Winners Hanna Schlaack, daughter of Holly and Ed Schlaack of Sharonville and Conner Osborne, son of Brad and Penny Osborne of Sycamore Township were each awarded the $2500 Robert J. Yeager Memorial Scholarship established by the Sahronville Fire Department Club. Hanna, a 2014 graduate of Ursuline Academy plans to attend The Ohio State University to major in Physics. Conner, a 2014 graduate of Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy plans to attend the University of South Carolina to major in International Business. The annual scholarship is open to residents of Sharonville and children of Sharonville firefighters. Applications for the 2015 scholarship will be available January 15, 2015 at the mail firehouse on Chester Road. Questions regarding the scholarship should be directed to Cherly Brown at (513) 379-6050. Every year the Sharonville Fire Department hosts an Open House and a Chili Cook off at all three of our fire stations. This is done to allow people to come and tour our fire stations, look at our equipment, and meet our members. There are activities for the kids, also. The firefighters make the chili and there will also be hot dogs to go along with it. Please plan on stopping by to meet the members of the fire department and enjoy the activities. 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. each night STATION 86 – 11637 CHESTER RD – MONDAY, OCTOBER 6 STATION 87 – 11210 READING RD – WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8 STATION 88 – 7150 FIELDS-ERTEL RD – FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10 The Sharonville Fire Department continues to offer our Smoke Detector Installation and Maintenance Program at no cost to all Sharonville Residents. The fire service recommends having smoke detectors on each level of your house. The smoke detectors we install were purchased through a Fire Safety Grant and are the wireless interconnected type. This means that if a detector is activated in any part of the house, it will automatically activate the others without having to wait for the fire and smoke to reach them individually. These operate on 3 AA batter- ies, so they will also work in times of power outages as well. Please call 563-0252 to set up an appointment to have new smoke detectors installed or to have your batteries changed. The Fire Department has also purchased a Fire Extinguisher Simulator for teaching citizens and employees of businesses in the community the correct way to use a fire extinguisher. This simulator was also purchased through a Fire Safety Grant. It is powered by propane, and has refillable water extinguishers that are more environmentally friendly to teach with. Classes can be scheduled for any number of people. We teach the P.A.S.S. method: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep. Please call 563-0252 to set up an appointment for a class to teach your group how to properly use a fire extinguisher. With Fall approaching, it is a great time to remind our residents that they should have a Carbon Monoxide Detector in their home. Any home appliance that runs on natural gas has the potential, if malfunctioning, to release a dangerous and poten- tially fatal gas into the home. Carbon Monoxide is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that can affect you without you knowing it. Let’s do everything we can to ensure our homes are safe by installing Smoke Detectors and a Carbon Monoxide Detector. The Sharonville Police Department would like to thank two of our veteran officers for their years of service and their dedication to the City and the citizens they served. Officer James Levo retired this past May with 25 years of service and Sgt. Brian Phillips retired in July with 24 years of service. Both Officer Levo and Sgt. Phillips served in the military prior to working for the City of Sharonville. We want to thank them both for their devotion to our country and to our city. Due to Officer Levo’s retirement, we welcome a new member to our team, Officer Andrew Filak. Officer Filak is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. After graduating from UC, Officer Filak received his commission in the U.S. Marine Corp Reserves and is currently a 2nd Lieutenant, serving as an Infantry Platoon Commander. • Always roll up your windows and lock the doors when you leave your vehicle, even when it’s parked in the driveway or you are away for a short time. • NEVER leave the keys in your vehicle. • Set any alarm or anti-theft device. • NEVER leave your vehicle running unattended. • Place items out of sight before you reach your destination. For more information call the Sharonville City Health Department Hotline at (513) 588-3973 or visit our website at www.sharonville.org For 47 years the Sharonville HEALTH DEPARTMENT has managed and nurtured the SHARONVILLE CHRISTMAS FUND. Established in 1967 as a non-profit 501(c)(3), the Sharonville Christmas Fund was created to support the Health Department’s mission to assess and support the medical and physical needs of the Sharonville community. Offering year-round emergency food and support, the Christmas Fund has provided assistance to residents and transients in need through donations from individuals, businesses and organizations in Sharonville and the surrounding area. In October the Health Department begins planning the annual Christmas Fund ADOPT-A-FAMILY PROGRAM. Through the generous donations of businesses, organizations and individuals, needy families are identified, evaluated, and paired together to create a festive holiday for those who would otherwise have very little. Gifts of clothing, toys, household goods and food are collected and distributed to the “adopted” families just before Christmas. If you, your company or organization have participated in Christmas Fund programs in the past… thank you! We sincerely hope you choose to participate again this year. If you have not taken part before, please consider adopting a family, holding a canned food, personal care or toy drive, or contributing financially. In these challenging economic times, the needy truly appreciate any help you can give. Christmas Fund Drive and Adopt-a-Family details will be available starting in October. If you have any questions, please call the Health Department at (513) 563-1722. Food Facility and Swimming Pool and Spa Inspections are now online! The City of Sharonville now has inspections for two types of facilities available online. Recreational Water Inspections conducted in September 2013 and beyond are available. Food facility inspections conducted October 2013 and beyond are available. Please call the Health Department at 563-1722 if you have any questions regarding the inspections. You can access food facility inspections by visiting http://www.sharonville.org/332/Inspections and swimming pool and spa inspections by visiting http://www.sharonville.org/324/Swimming-Pools 563-1722 In September 2013, the City of Sharonville Health Department began using an electronic inspection system offered by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH). The purpose of this system is to help standardize public health inspection reports and allow the reports to be viewed online by the public. Once online, anyone can look up the inspection reports of any food facility or public recreational water facility (swimming pools and spas) within the City of Sharonville. It is, however, important to remember the inspections are a snapshot of the conditions of a facility at the time of inspection. Reviewing multiple inspections over a period of time will give you a better idea of how the facility complies with the regulations. www.sharonville.org The annual Sharonville CHRISTMAS FUND DRIVE raises the money used to purchase non-perishable food for the food pantry throughout the year. Whether you choose to Adopt A Family or make a Cash Contribution, your generous gift will be greatly appreciated by the many needy people helped by Christmas Fund services all year long. Health Department Sharonville Christmas Fund 9 Convention Center www.sharonvilleconventioncenter.com 771-7744 10 Did you know that Sharonville is home to the region’s only LEED-certified, state-of the-art events facility? In fact, local, national, and even international visitors come to Sharonville each year to take part in public shows, conventions, trade shows and meetings, at the Sharonville Convention Center. Guests are attracted to the center’s modern amenities, contemporary décor, and food prepared by Ovation’s Cordon Bleu trained chef. Recently, the Sharonville Convention Center hosted a number of professional conventions, meetings and banquets for leading organizations including The Council on Aging, School Nutrition Association, the Ohio Ophthalmological Association, and the OKI Regional Council of Governments (OKI), who welcomed Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley as a keynote speaker. The center is also a regional destination for major public shows and informative events, like the Autism Expo and the Hiring our Hero’s Job Fair for Veterans. In fact, no day is the same at the convention center. In April the center opened its doors to both four and two legged visitors for the SPCA Fur Ball and in June we welcomed bridge players from all over the world at Cincinnati Bridge Association’s Regional Tournament. There’s more good news on the horizon. In 2013, the center underwent a major expansion and renovation that helped secure its place as the regional leader for events and meetings. Now, the center and the City of Sharonville are in the process of bringing a $14 million, 120 room, first class, select service onsite anchor hotel. The development will bring additional economic impact to the region by attracting more conventions and tradeshows. Whether you’re seeking a venue for an important convention or meeting, a beautiful space to host a celebration, or an exhibit hall for a major public show, the Sharonville Convention Center has room for everyone. Check out our public event calendar and come visit us soon. We’re your center for inspiration. The new program will be presented to City Council late this year or early next year for full implementation in the summer of 2015. Residential, commercial, and other types of properties will be considered for beautification awards. Information on the final program details will be made available to the general public and a link to the program will be added to the city website. Below are samples of residential, commercial and development properties that exemplify the spirit of the all new Beautify Sharonville Beautification Awards program. 2014 Residential Property #1: 11160 Oak Street This was a bank owned property that was purchased and improved by the owners, Anthony and Chelsea Boutelle, to stand proud as a gem of the downtown area. Increased property values and community pride are byproducts of tasteful and quality property improvement as demonstrated here. 2014 Residential Property #2: 3913 Kemper Road Each and every year the owners of this property, Al and Kay Ledbetter, demonstrate keen landscaping skills and attention to detail as shown in this photo. This property is the eastbound gateway on Kemper Road as land uses transition from industrial and commercial to primarily single family residential. 2014 Commercial property: Alreddy Café, 11083 Reading Another downtown gem in the Depot Square area, Alreddy Café serves excellent food and coffee, and they have a wonderful sense of landscape and outdoor area design. Anchored in the heart of the central business district, Alreddy Café helps provide residents and businesses a sense of place and community pride. 2014 Development Property: Tennyson Drive Mixed Residential Beautification and community pride can also come in the form of collective attention to detail and sense of beauty. We believe very few large organizations or associations can come close to what the City of Sharonville Recreation and Public Works Departments accomplish, but Tennyson gives us a run for our money. It is clear they take great pride in their property and it is the entire city that benefits from it. We expect the new beautification awards program to include special recognition in the form of a small yard sign or flag. We anticipate annual recognition of all award winners during a City Council meeting. We want to publicly recognize and honor those owners who take exceptional pride in their property. But most of all, we want to help raise the level of community pride in Sharonville one beautification award at a time. COMING ATTRACTIONS Mail Address: P. O. The exercises are performed seated or standing, with added resistance through the use of Therabands, hand weights, medicine balls, tubing, and step benches. Major muscle groups of the upper body, core area, and lower body are targeted for building overall strength while improving your posture, balance, agility, and flexibility. *Each class session will last 4 weeks, always beginning on a Wednesday. Residents or Members only. We ask that you call #563-2895 to register for this class prior to the start of each session. Space is limited to 15. Cardio intervals are an amazing way to speed up one’s metabolism and increase calories burned. The class will consist of short bursts of cardio followed by strength training. Cardio intervals require more physical activity than cardio exercises being performed at a consistent rate. Therefore, the first 15 minutes of class will be warming up our bodies and preparing for our powerful workout with flowing Yoga. If time is an issue you are welcome to join in at 5:15 for the Cardio Interval portion only. As always, I will perform all activities (including cardio) at a basic level as well as a high level. Beginners are welcome! Each workshop includes a custom mini-figure that the kids will create, use during the camp, and then take home! All four of the workshops will be unique, with all new models and lessons each time. Your kids have never had so much fun learning. ** Please note, our supplies are reused from class to class. Students will not take home completed models as that would make our program costs unaffordable for most. * LEGO® is a registered trademark of the LEGO® Group of Companies and is not affiliated with Bricks 4 Kidz.
