Mike Tran [email protected] Monday - Friday 8:30 am—4:30PM Pastor Deacon Raymond Bourg, Jr. Mrs. Heather Hartwell Secretary/Records Keeper Mrs. Lisa Levron Director of Religious Education Safe Environment Supervisor Mrs. Dora Delancey Receptionist A Look at Today’s Gospel Mr. David Babin Mark 9: 30-37: Jesus teaches his disciples that the greatest are those who serve all. Mrs. Gayle Domangue In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus again predict his passion, death and Resurrection to his disciples. The setting here is important, Jesus and his disciples are preparing to journey through Galilee, a Jewish territory in which Jesus has already encountered problems with the Pharisees. In predicting his passion, Jesus is acknowledging the danger they will face and is trying to prepare his disciples for it. Yet Mark tells us that the disciples did not understand what Jesus was saying and were afraid to ask what he meant. Peter had no fear about rebuking Jesus in last week’s Gospel. Perhaps this is an indication that the disciples were aware that a new situation was emerging. Mark paints a vivid picture in today’s Gospel. Having arrived at Capernaum, Jesus and his disciples enter a house. In this private place, Jesus asks his disciples about the argument they had while they were journeying. Again the disciples are uncharacteristically silent and afraid to answer. Jesus then summons the Twelve and teaches that those who would be first in God’s kingdom must be servants to all. Jesus then calls forward a child and teaches the Twelve that to receive a child in Jesus’ name is to receive both Jesus and the One who sent him. We might easily fail to understand the significance of this action. Children were without status or power. In this action Jesus is teaching his disciples and us that when we serve the least ones among us, we serve Jesus himself. Do we do so willingly? Jesus teaches that God’s judgement of us will be based on this criterion alone. Maintenance R.C.I.A. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” Mark 8:27-35 and James 2:14-18 Jesus seems to be hard on Peter, about whom he will later declare, “Upon this rock I will build my church” and to whom he will give the Keys to the Kingdom of God. Also, when Jesus asked his disciples “Who do you say that I am?” it is Peter who answers, “You are the Christ.” Peter believed in Jesus. He loved Jesus. So when Jesus said he would “suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days,” it is not surprising that Peter would want to prevent that from happening to his friend that he believed was the “the Christ.” Jesus tells Peter not to tempt him to abandon what he knew he must do to fulfill his mission as “the Christ.” He teaches his disciples that they must be detached from the things of this world, including our earthly life, in order to imitate him. Eventually, they would understand what Jesus meant. They would suffer much and sacrifice all to imitate Jesus. They eventually thought like God, not like men. Who do we think like?
