Independence is also something that bikers celebrate, and not just once a year but every time they hop on their scoots to head down the roads. Independence is also probably yet another reason you have embraced us; we are the only independent free magazine in the area. We use local vendors and support local businesses whenever possible and prudent. This helps to keep jobs in the region. Others though support out of the region headquarters. This kind of brings us to a philosophy of business. The Biking Life has always strived to provide a service to our readers. Since our inception, we have supported your charities and benefits, and enjoyed doing it. We want to be the people’s magazine. Many times businesses and organizations have approached us about placing their ads on our cover, and offered substantial financial benefits for doing this. I looked at other magazines, most of a national scope, some local, and it appeared to me that no legitimate publication sold its cover. I wanted The Biking Life to be a legitimate magazine, not just an ad rag, so I resisted this. I believe it is important to maintain integrity—knowing there is a right thing and doing it, regardless of personal gain or loss. Many times I have been approached to do a written ad, in order to get a print ad. During my research of legitimate magazines, I saw that they didn’t just write an ad to get an ad. It is true that we highlight our advertisers wherever possible because we owe it to those that support us to support them as much as we can. However, we do not sell articles although we do try to let our readers get to know some of our advertisers by occasionally featuring their successes and events of interest. However, we also print these same sorts of articles about businesses that do not advertise in The Biking Life. We support local and national charities, organizations and benefits often giving them ad space for free or at greatly reduced prices. We do this to help them out, but also because we believe in helping the biking community and those causes you support. I have an office full of things we have been given for supporting your causes. Thank you. We often get letters and emails either thanking us or praising the things we do. I choose not to print these for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that I don’t have to convince you that we are something you should read as businesses frequently tell me that many people read all free publications, but there is one in particular they ask for—The Biking Life. Another reason I don’t print these is space in the magazine is at a premium. If I use it to tell you how someone thinks we are doing a good job, we lose space that can be used to tell about things that are important to you, and the bottom line is this, the magazine is about you. I ask you to please continue to patronize our advertisers, without them we cannot bring this publication to you. I also look forward to seeing you out and about; we can be found most evenings at one of the events in the magazine, and on the weekends we run. If you are web savvy and haven’t checked out my blog, I invite you to come visit with me and share your opinion because I will sure as hell share mine. We are now in the prime of the riding season and I ask you all to be safe, to be responsible when you are out on your bike. This doesn’t mean you can’t have fun, you can and should since that’s why we ride, but I want you to be around so I can either meet you or see you again. 5 music provided by Keith Karban and KSHE radio. Of course there were additional ways to donate more money to the cause. You could take a shot at hitting a home run and winning prizes. Hadn’t swung a bat in forever and was fortunate not to hurt myself taking a few swings. Made it out of the infield a couple of times. There was a bunch of silent auctions with some really nice gifts. The H.O.G. Chapter had been selling raffle tickets and one lucky person won a trip to Cancun. The 50-50 drawing netted someone a tidy sum, not going to mention how much, too many free loaders around. Belleville HOG Cancer Ride by Gary Moser What an amazing day to go for a ride, so we did. It was the 12th Annual Cancer benefit ride put on by the Belleville H.O.G. chapter and chaired by Guillermo Rodriguez Jr. Over the preceding 11 years they donated over $145,000 and added almost another $27,000 this year. In conjunction with the Cancer Benefit they also raffled off a new HarleyDavidson to help the John Brough Fund. John is the Belleville Police Officer who was severely injured in a SWAT raid trying to apprehend a murder suspect. This being the 12th time the event has started at Frieze Harley-Davidson, the registration is down to a fine art and relatively hassle free. Pre-registration had been going on for several weeks and a lot of people took advantage of it. This was quite helpful as approximately 876 people were signed up. The first stop was found at the end of a pleasant ride to the VFW in Sparta. It’s a good thing they have a large parking lot, it was full of motorcycles. With two bars going strong and some bargain priced food, they were kept busy. We proceeded to the second stop in Red Bud. Fortunately the route took us through Evansville and Just Mary’s became the “unofficial” second stop. Seeing as how we were unexpected, we soon overwhelmed the bar staff. And they ran out of bloody mary mix, what a tragedy. The real stop at the Silver Spur in Red Bud met us with open arms and as usual were fully prepared for the riders. Continuing on to the third stop at the Columbia Bowling Alley. This is a nice place and if you’re into bowling you ought to check it out. It’s hard to find a place that can handle this many bikers at once, good thing we ended up at the Grizzlies Stadium. Ample room for parking and plenty of seats to rest your weary bones on. Free food and liquid refreshment with Perfect weather, good friends, nice ride and helping out a great cause, doesn’t get much better. In memory of Cindy Haege, Russell Frieze, and Glen Jacob. Thank you Doc Rod, keep up the good work. Can’t wait till next year. We Are Not On Main Street But We Are A Nice Ride From Anywhere Iron Hog has great financing plans available regardless of history. First of all let me introduce myself, my name is Tequila Sheila, and I’m a newby to the Biking Life family. My husband, kids, and I moved to the lake area in August of ’06 because my husband {Shaggy} landed a wonderful job at Lake of the Ozarks Harley-Davidson as their Service Consultant. And just let me say, that he LOVES his job! The people we have met here are great and the biking community is awesome too. We have been made to feel very welcome here. I am here to keep you readers updated on all of the happenings and special events that are coming to Lake of the Ozarks. The first thing I want to mention is the Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest which runs September 13 thru 17. I don’t have a lot of details at this moment, but what I do know sounds like a lot of fun. There will be some killer concerts being held at the HorneyToad during this event. Bands like Jimmy Van Zant, Marshal Tucker Band, Foghat, and the legendary Flirtin’ with freakin’ Disaster, Molly Hatchet! OH YEAH!! On July 21st there will be a “Million $ Bike Show” & police raffle, hosted by Mid-America H -D at 5704 Freedom Dr. Columbia, Mo. There will be games, food and vendors beginning at 11 am. Hope to see you there. Well folks, I’ll be back next month with more info on these and other events coming to the lake area. So until then, “God bless and Keep the Shiny side up!” And remember when you’re out for a putt, stop in at Lake of the Ozarks Harley-Davidson and give Shaggy and the rest of the gang a big HOWDY! Peace Out! Tequila Sheila Swearengin July 7th - the band Flashback is getting back together after years and will play at 7:30PM in the Biergarten. This is at the end of a Warrior Brotherhood fundraising run for the veterans home. I would like to welcome Tequila Sheila and Shaggy to our family. I am very confident that they will continue the tradition of being the magazine that keeps you informed about what is going on at the Lake and shows the rest our readership that there is a ton of fun to be had on your scoot in the Central Missouri area. I am a firm believer in covering stories throughout the region to help keep you informed as to what is going on in other places and thank Sheila and Shaggy for helping us to accomplish that. This is a great thing these brothers do every year. Lots of them were in the Service, and they remember that you never forget a fellow soldier, so good for them. Statesmen Helping Vets by Killer Miller On what finally turned out to be a nice day after a week of rain, the Statesmen MC (along with Chuck’s Boots and numerous VFW and American Legion halls) held their poker run. Ray, Gary, and I as well as numerous others went on this extremely well-laid-out run that started at Chuck’s Boots in Fenton, Missouri, and ended at the Fenton VFW Hall. It was a great day to take in the wonderful scenery along Highways 21 and 32, as well as the other roads that led the large group of riders (well over a hundred) on the winding route to Desoto, Ste. Genevieve, Farmington, and back to the twin cities. It was a great ride that featured food (not just hot dogs, but real food) and drink and a good time with good friends. On the Tuesday before Memorial Day, a bunch of the Statesmen gathered in Pevely, Missouri, along with some of the Brothers Keepers MC and some other free riders for the ride to Jefferson Barracks. There they met up with riders going to the Wall in Washington DC. It made for a real nice show up at the Home and a bunch of really thankful fellow soldiers. Remember, no matter what you think, one thing is for certain: Freedom isn’t free. We should never forget those who keep the world that way.— My hand wasn’t worth a dang (do we sense a theme here?), so I boogied up to TJ’s anniversary party, which means I don’t know who won the gift certificate from Chuck’s. Still, the real winners were the veterans that will benefit from the money raised and the riders (good job to the girl on the sporty with the rocket bike guys: you might not get there first, but you get there in style). The Statesmen MC did a heck of a great job, and if next year’s is this good, count me in. 11 2nd Annual 100 Miles for Arthritis by Stephanie Stangl Public Relations Coordinator Eastern MO Chapter Arthritis Foundation Nearly 200 motorcycle enthusiasts enjoying a 100-mile ride through beautiful Missouri wine country helped the Eastern Missouri Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation to raise almost $20,000 for the 1 in 5 Missourians, including thousands of children, with arthritis. The 2nd Annual “100 Miles for Arthritis” Motorcycle Ride, held June 3 in Weldon Springs at Twister’s Pub and Grill was themed “Smash and Twist’s Excellent Adventure” and featured music by The Smash Band, a silent auction, and food and drink sponsored by Twister’s. Through registration fees, personal fundraising efforts, sponsorships and a silent auction, participants helped raise awareness about the No. 1 cause of disability in the United States. friends, “Spanky’s” time was consumed by doctor’s visit s and pain medications. He is currently on Methotrexate, the same cell-growth inhibitor many cancer patients are on. Through attending Cabin Fever, the Eastern Missouri Chapter’s Juvenile Arthritis event, he realized he was not alone and learned how to manage his disease so he could be a kid again.Funds raised go towards funding research, programs and services and patient advocacy efforts. Sponsors for the event included: The Biking Life, Wyeth, Charter Media, Mayhem Custom Paint & Airbrush, Laborers Local 110, 97.1 Talk radio, Twister’s Pub and Grill, The Smash Band, and the American Motorcyclist Association. The Chapter would like to thank the O’Fallon and Cottleville Fire Departments for displaying the American flag at the event. The Arthritis Foundation is the only nationwide, non-profit health organization helping people take greater control of arthritis by leading efforts to prevent, control and cure arthritis and related diseases. The Foundation is the largest non-governmental funder of arthritis research in the world. Since 1948, the Foundation has provided nearly $350 million to arthritis-related research through its nationally recognized peer-review research award program. For free information on improving health and limiting the impact of arthritis, contact the Eastern Missouri Chapter at (314) 991-9333 or www.arthritis.org keyword Eastern Missouri. For more pictures of the ride and information for the next ride go to www.ride4arthritis.com. In attendance was 2007 Honoree 10-year-old Adam “Spanky” Zobrist who proves arthritis is an equal opportunity disease. “Spanky” was diagnosed with Systemic Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at just 5-years-old, showing that arthritis can affect anyone, regardless of age. Instead of playing baseball or riding his bicycle with his 13 Run What Ya Brung by Jim Furey The weekend of May 19th and 20th found me outside of Lesterville, MO, at SEMO, the Annual Run What YA Brung field events. This was my first trip to SEMO, so yes, I was truly a SEMO virgin. I had heard so many good things about the new site for this event but I truly could not believe how fantastic a setting this area provides. The old site was either a mud pit or a dust bowl depending on the weather. This site is on top of a rise, so if it rains the water runs off which is a bonus in the Ozarks. Lesterville is a small community on the Black River and is renowned for camping and floating. In fact, this whole area was a tourist haven until the Taum Sauk Reservoir disaster of a couple of years ago. Since then, the hard working residents of this area have had to toil even more to make ends meet, while the company responsible has profited. That is one reason why the residents embrace SEMO; the organizers give back to the community. This year they requested that all who attended bring some canned goods with them for those in need and they also donated a portion of the proceeds to the local fire department so that they can purchase some much needed equipment. A lot of people might not expect such actions, but this is yet another example of the generosity of the biker community. This year’s site is probably closer than the previous location and, if you are riding down, definitely a more enjoyable ride. In fact in my mind, the ride to get here makes this one of the best places to party I have been to in a while. I arrived on Saturday afternoon and spent time visiting with friends. There was live music during the day and it provided a nice background while talking with friends. Kindly, I was offered a booth at SEMO, but decided against it since I much prefer to walk around and check out the sights. I ran into several of my friends from the Salty Dawgs—boy this group does a lot of riding. The 100 MPH Club also had a crew there, the Tribe of Judah was well represented, and Terry from TJ’s Bar and Grill was there with his sound system entertaining the crowd when bands weren’t playing and announcing during the field events.. The site for the field events was really nice, you could tell that the organizers put in many hours preparing for the event. There were a lot of participants in the games, and all of them were very hotly contested. Almost as hot as the two trophy girls who were coaxed out of the crowd and were very eye pleasing. The contestants in the tire drag get my admiration; they do put life and limb on the line and you definitely need somewhere to rinse off the dust after you re done. But as at all events we attend, our hats are off to all the participants because they don’t this for “fortune and glory” as Indiana Jones would say. No, rather I think they do it to entertain us. The chopper show had some very nice pieces entered it. The winner was an awesome bike, but while I left a card on this bike and asked them to contact me, I haven’t heard from them yet. As always the judging was very difficult, but I think all who participated were satisfied by the decision. Of course, everyone thinks their bike is best and I respect that. As the sun went down, it was time for the Night Owls to take the stage. This bad ass band has been laying down classic rock at motorcycle events and parties for a while and they never fail to please the crowd. If you see these guys are playing somewhere, you owe it to yourself to check them out. They rocked well into the morning hours. Between their sets was the contest all the guys were waiting for, the wet t-shirt event or in most cases what t-shirt. Unfortunately by this the time this started, I was on the road to be somewhere the next day, but I heard from friends cont on pg 16 weekend here, you are sure to see a lot of your friends while still having some space for yourself if you want it. I look forward to seeing you there next year. that the entrants were all darn cute and it was one hell of a good time. In fact that was my opinion of the entire time I spent at SEMO and that opinion was echoed by everyone I talked to. This is an event you need to check out. If you went to SEMO at the old site, you need to see the new one. During the 19th Annual Run For The Wall Stops in Wentzville by John Skala What started as a couple of Vietnam Veterans traveling across the country on motorcycles to call attention to the thousands of men and women still unaccounted for from our wars, has grown into an annual tradition. Each May hundreds of veterans and supporters ride their bikes from California to Washington D.C. The riders split up and the run takes two routes with hundreds more riders joining the ride along the way as the groups make the 10 day journey to coincide with Rolling Thunder over the Memorial Day weekend. Rolling Thunder takes place each year on the Sunday before Memorial Day. Hundreds of thousands of riders and supporters participate each year in the ride from the Pentagon to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, also known as The Wall. The purpose of this rally is to also call attention to the POW’s and MIA’s of all current and previous wars. On the Monday the week before Memorial Day each year the riders on the central route of Run For The Wall stops overnight at the Wentzville VFW where they are welcomed by hundreds of supporters. The riders are treated to dinner that night at the VFW. Tuesday morning after breakfast at the VFW, the group visits the first Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the country in Wentzville and the Veterans Hospital at Jefferson Barracks. Each year the Wentzville stop is one of the favorites along the ride. In addition to the scouts and local area residents who turn out to welcome the riders, the O’Fallon fire department brings out a ladder truck to fly the large American flag over the riders path as they arrive at the VFW. There are a few people from the St Louis area that ride out to California to make the entire trip with the group including the Missouri state coordinator, Jim “Sidecar” David. Riders come from the surrounding states to join with local riders and become part of the ride. This year there were riders from Iowa and Nebraska that came to Wentzville to become part of the Run For The Wall. A number of people and organizations make donations each year to support the run but the greatest cost of the trip is borne by the riders. While some of the riders stay in hotels along the way, a large number of the participants camp at the various stops along the route. Regardless of how you feel about current or past wars, you can’t help but feel moved by the dedication of the riders and the admirable cause. For more information visit the Run For The Wall, web site at www.rftw.org or Rolling Thunder at www.rollingthundermotorcyclerally.com. I have been to many, but I was just blown away by the scope and size of the Customer Appreciation Days hosted during the weekend of May 19th and 20th at Niehaus Cycle Sales in Litchfield, IL. Actually this event goes on even longer than that, but those are the best attended days. And attended they definitely are! The road in front of Niehaus Cycles is blocked off for the crowds and the parking lots surrounding the business are filled to capacity. Joy, her daughter, Sarah, and her grandkids enjoyed walking around the parking lots and observing all the different kinds of motorcycles, paint jobs and other interesting add-ons like pet carriers and enclosed sidecars. Brad Niehaus, the host for this event, throws one heck of a party with the help of his staff. There are vendors, and a lot of you are saying yeah, so what, lots of places have vendors. Well, let me tell you, I have been to rallies that were much smaller and didn’t have nearly the amount of vendors this gala does. It is also a motorcycle celebration for families, so you could see young and old alike participating and checking out all the fine machines the dealership has as well as the wares of the vendors. Tired folks were able to sit and listen to some pretty good karaoke since we did not sing! We saw friends like John Bauer, or Van Gogh as some know him, pin striping bikes. Steve Lowe from Diamond Trailer Sales was there and had some nice toy haulers on display. The fine folks at Diamond Trailer Sales are riders and Steve is a founding member of the Fatboys. If you are in the market for a toy hauler or a trailer for your bike you should check them out. We also saw some of our friends from the Road Riders for Jesus and many more whom we may have forgotten to mention, but definitely enjoyed seeing. There are events going on throughout this festival of motorcycles. There is the Show of Lights Parade on Saturday night, bike show, poker run and many other small parties in the Litchfield, IL area. Located in the heartland of Illinois, there is a lot of fun riding here like historic Route. 66. This famous highway features many businesses exhibiting pieces of Americana that are sure to bring back some fond memories to those of us lucky enough to have traveled it. As a matter of fact, you will be on a bit of old Route 66 when riding to Niehaus Cycle Sales. If you enjoy a good time with lots of friendly people, keep an eye out for next year’s ads about their customer appreciation days, come on out to the party and get your kicks on Route 66. Racing Motocross Bikes With Slick Tires By John Skala event. In addition to the dirt motocross section there was a section called urbancross made of steel ramps and jumps. How do you compare motorcycle racers across the different series to determine who is the best overall? In the late 70s someone came up with the idea of having the road racers, off road racers and flat trackers compete on a course made up of sections road course, motocross jumps, whoops and turns along with a dirt flat track section. This original race was called Superbikers. Before there were specific bikes made for this race, they took motocross bikes and put slick tires on them. Some riders/mechanics would optionally cut some grooves in the tires. Superbikers lasted for a while then disappeared from the U.S., but it caught on in Europe. In 2003 it was revived back in America with involvement from the AMA as a series of races named Supermoto. As the sport caught on, manufactures started making Supermoto bikes and the AMA has expanded the series adding more races and more cities to the schedule. In 2007 this expansion added St Louis as the opening round for the championship series. The track for the St Louis Supermoto was setup in the parking lot of the Verizon Amphitheater (formerly known as Riverport). The road course section was defined by cones and hay bales with a long straight away and plenty of twisting turns. The flat track and motocross sections were sculpted from truck loads of dirt that was hauled in for the The St Louis Supermoto was a two day event. The pros had practice and races on Saturday and the amateurs on Sunday. In between the practice session, heat races and the main event the crowd was entertained by some great riding and jumping exhibitions. The Streetfighterz showed off their extreme riding talents doing stunts riding on one wheel. While some of the stunts were done on only the rear wheel others were done on only the front. They rode the bikes standing and sitting anywhere on the bike but the normal place you would ride. They exhibit more skill and control on one wheel than a lot of people have on two. Back in town for a repeat performance were Jack and Jason Rowe and J.J. Romans showing off their considerable jumping skills in a freestyle motocross exhibition. The outdoor environment added a new challenge they did not have when they appeared at the Scottrade Center. The air was calm and still on the ground when they hit the ramp and launched high into the sky. However, once they cleared the height of the nearby levee the winds were a lot stronger adding an greater level of difficulty. In addition to the standards like the Heal Clicker, Cliffhanger, Superman Seat Grab, Indian Air and others they did the Back Flip. Until just a few years ago it was thought that it wasn’t possible to do a back flip on a motorcycle, now J.J. Romans made it look effortless as he executed a flawless jump, flip and stuck a smooth landing. in the turns and flying off the jumps.. The different sections showed where each rider most proficient. With passing and close racing on all sections of the course there wasn’t a bad spot to watch from.. In the end Brandon Currie took the win in the Lites class with hometown favorite Matt Pursley coming in 7th. In the Supermoto Unlimited class, reigning champion, Benny Carlson took the win on his factory Aprilia 550cc twin.. This was the first AMA Supercross for the factory Aprilia. Benny jumped out in the lead from the pole and pulled away from the competition to finish almost 12 seconds before the next closest rider. The Supermoto Premier/450cc class is where the more familiar motocross racers could be found. However, Doug Henry, who finished the season in second place last year, was out with a back injury he suffered earlier this year. From the start it was Yamaha, Kawasaki, Husqvarna and Honda all battling for the lead. Fifteen laps and a lot of hard racing later, it was Jeff Ward on his Troy Lee Designs/ Red Bull Honda Taking the win. Unlike the previous race, the time between first and third place finishers was less than a second and a half. At 45 years old, Jeff showed the new kids that the old guys can still get it done. After the exhibition riding it was the main event starting with the Supermoto Lites. The Lites class is made up of 200 – 250cc 4-stroke single cylinder bikes with a minimum 220 pound weight limit. Although those of you riding the large 1400cc plus cruisers may not think they could do it, these bikes really move on the road course section and get plenty of air on the motocross and urbancross sections. Local pro rider Matt Pursley was there on his #343 Donelson Cycles supported Yamaha. Matt was easy to spot with his Cardinals T-shirt over his riding gear. The riding was intense with the bikes roaring down the straight, sliding The promoters of this event, Live Nation, bring Supercross to St Louis each year and this year have also brought freestyle motocross back to St Louis. Hopefully all the racing fans in the area will support these events and we will continue to see world class competition right here in our hometown. One final note, although Matt did not make it to the podium in the Supermoto Lites, he did take the trophy girl home with him. Of course it was his wife Natalie Jackson and mother of their son Colton. In addition to being co-founder of Umbrella Girls USA, Natalie is also an accomplished motorcycle rider and racer. THE ROAD TRIP One of the things I love the most about motorcycling is taking road trips. The movie “Wild Hogs” was about a group of guys going across country on Harleys and all the problems and fun they have. Most of us can relate to these. I personally have not seen the movie yet (I’m waiting for the DVD), but a lot of our friends have talked about it. Kathy and I love to ride across the country. I love the places we visit and the people we meet. Riding across country with friends and sharing all the adventures and new experiences brings you a lot closer and you really get to know each other when you live and travel as a family. During a recent Bible study I realized I was reading a lot of stories about road trips: Moses went on a road trip: he led the Israelites on a trip for 40 years. During his trip, he met God on a mountaintop. God changed his life and our on that mountaintop. (Kathy and I rode to the top of Pike’s Peak last year and God was on top of that mountain too, even in a snow blizzard. I know God was with us there!) David also took a few road trips; some of the times he was running from people who were trying to kill him. He hid in a cave and God met him there and protected him. Paul was on a road trip to Damascus with papers to arrest Christians and take them to be imprisoned; he had hated Christians and what they represented. It was on this road that Christ called out to him, and Paul came to know the true Christ and was converted to Christianity. He went on to teach, preach and established churches and communities. There are many people, like the young Paul, who have never given Christianity a chance. All of us hate someone or something – sometimes for no really good reasons – just like Paul did. After Christ talked with Paul, Paul became a new person. Paul wrote a big part of the Bible’s New Testament that we read today. Paul’s road trip changed his life and also all of ours by the guidance he gives us in his writings. If your life seems to be going down a bad road, maybe you need to ask God to go on a road trip with you. It will be a totally different and exciting experience. I wrote the pastor’s name down somewhere but right now it escapes me however what didn’t escape me was the powerful message she gave to all in attendance. Well that and some of the fine food her congregation was serving up. Bike Blessing Association Style This past May the Missouri & Illinois Association had their Annual Bike Blessing. This very well attended event was held at the Sin City Deciples MC Clubhouse on the East Side. This place has a long history of being a biker hangout and its current residents know how to keep the party going. While there was a good amount of partying going on Friday night when I rolled in, the purpose of the weekend was much more serious. There was some great barbecue and other foods available and whatever you wanted to drink you could get as well. I was under the impression that the Sundance Riders were putting this on because Lonesome Child played a prominent role but when I stopped by the clubhouse the other night to check my facts. I was set straight by G.J. of the Lawless MC. I came back on Saturday for the blessing of the bikes. I missed the parade of bikes though but some of the good folks were kind After her sermon, I guess that is what you would call it; she and some of the other church members came out to the street to actually bless the Bikes. I had the opportunity to meet King Deo of the Drifters MC and he told me that he had set up this portion of the weekend’s activities but somehow there had been some misinformation as to when the parade was going to leave the Sin City Deciples Club House. After the blessing, most of the participants headed back to the clubhouse to finish off the weekend partying Deciple Style. 110 Mascoutah Ave, Belleville, IL (618) 234 - 7400 or (877) 754 - 3777 Gene D Gove Master Mechanic owners gary and Jewel Scott We are your v-twin service headquarters no matter what make or model we service them all Also offering parts, Service, apparel and consignment sales Tues - Friday * 10 AM to 7 PM ** Saturday * 9 AM to 4:30 PM If we are not here visit us on the web www.metrocyclesinc.com Verizon Supermoto by Killer Miler In May, Live Nation, Doc’s Harley-Davidson, the AMA, and the Verizon Amphitheatre teamed up to hold the opening round of the 2007 season of Supermoto. This sport is a mixture of pavement and dirt racing, usually done on highly modified MX bikes (although more and more companies are making sport-specific models) with road race slicks and redone suspensions. This form of racing has been popular in Europe for decades, but it started in the USA with an event called “Superbikers.” This event, back in the late 1970s, featured the best riders from all forms of racing on different bikes at the raceway in Carlsbad, California. One of the premier racers back then was a young rider named Jeff Ward. Well, Ward is still going strong: the former MX and SX rider and Indy car driver (he was once rookie of the year at the 500) went out and won the expert class at the age of 45 on his Red Bull, Troy Lee-designed Honda CRF 450. Ward fought a tight battle with Frenchman Adrian Chareyre on the Yamaha, Graves Yamaha rider Mark Burkhart sat on the pole, but Monster Energy Drink sponsored Kawasaki rider Fillmore got the hole shot. At the end of the long straightaway, some of the riders were hitting 90 mph. Chareyre took over at the end of Lap two and held off Ward (who started fourth) until Lap 16, at which point Ward outbraked Chareyre at the end of the long front straight and held him off for four more laps for the win. Last year’s lights champion, Cassidy Anderson, was third on his Honda. On Sunday, the amateurs took the field and put on a great show for the crowd. Pisgullira, a young Husky rider, led the day, winning both the 450 and the 250 class. This boy is just bad fast; look for him in the future. On a different note, this is great racing, folks. I know having the Pro Main on a Saturday night wasn’t the best idea. Heck, I had to race back to BET to see my son race. I know there’s a lot more to do (ride to the bar and have a beer, go to the St. Louis moto fest, etc.). Still, the attendance in my opinion was dismal, especially on Sunday. This was a national event with the best riders in the world. Come on, St. Louis—step it up, race fans. I hope that if the event comes back next year that the race fans of the area will come watch. You missed something great this year: try not to do the same next time. Killer, loaded up and ready to go. 31 Two Sides To A Very Different Coin by Killer Miller Blast (a fun little turn-hugging machine that’s great to get started on or to use as an around-town ride) to a factory 12 RR roadracer. I recently had the chance to test ride the Buell Lightning and Ulysses. Buells are different—they are the Americanmade brianchild of former roadracer and roadrace bike builder Erik Buell. They are one of the most sophisticated motorcycles made today, they use (for the most part) a very modified 1200 V twin Sporty motor, and they’re sold through most Harley-Davidson dealerships. Buell The two bikes I test rode were a Hooligan naked bike (the Lightning) and an all-arounder (the Ulysses). The Lightning is a Six Flags amusement ride disguised as a motorcycle. It’s a big hunk of throbbing muscle bike, and I was warned by Surdyke Buell guru Todd Schepker to not launch in low gear with a handful of throttle unless I wanted to look at the sky for the first three gears. Well, I launched sort of easy, and as the test ride proceeded I found the bike to be a willling conspirator to any trouble you would want to get into. It’s fun, fast, and focused, and although it’s not as fast or focused as a GSXR it is every bit as fun. That big motor has torque everywhere (84 foot pounds) and plenty of giddyup to get to 100 mph as quick as you need to as well as the best brakes in the industry to stop you when others think you’re having too much fun. The only fault I could find is that the Prellis takes a little while to warm up so it can be skittish if pushed hard cold. The suspension was set up for a bigger man, so it was kind of rigid for my liking. It’s not a bike a passenger can ride on. Still, when you buy a Lightning uses the best technology and parts available to make one you know that ahead of time and you just throttle up for rockin’ bike. The bikes range all the way from the 500 cc the ride. The flip side of that coin is the Ulysses. This is the bike to get if you need one bike that can go anywhere. Much like the BMW GS, this bike makes you love it for function, not form. It allows you to go down that gravel road without fear, and it dares you to explore the world around you. Although it’s not as dirt-oriented as the Kawasaki KLR series, it is a far better all-around ride because of the V Twin. That engine makes it a much better urban warrior: think of it as an SUV that gets better mileage and is easier to park. Although I wouldn’t sign up to do a hard scramble with it, I wouldn’t mind getting on one and exploring the back roads on my next vacation, knowing full well that if the road turns to horse stuff I can get through it. For the money (and equipped with the right accessories), this could be the only bike you’ll need. Both Buells are great for all-around fun, and they prove once again that good old American know-how and ingenuity can build bikes to take on the world. Thanks to Buell and the crew at Surdyke Harley-Davidson Buell (especially Todd the Guru and Doug Eisenhauer) for all the help. When you’re thinking about buying, don’t forget Buell—to do so might short change you of a ride you won’t soon forget. Shadow Riders Club of St. Louis The explosion of interest in the sport of motorcycling in recent years has resulted in a similar growth of motorcycle clubs in the St. Louis area. Whereas a few years back there were only a handful, now dozens of clubs have sprung up, catering to every area of interest for local riders. One of the older riding clubs in the area is the Shadow Riders Club of St. Louis. Formed in 1995 by a small group of riders who owned Honda Shadow motorcycles, the club quickly became an all-brand club, welcoming owners of all makes and models of bikes. The club expanded over the years and now has around 125 members. The Shadow Riders Club’s pride and joy is its Sunday Group Ride Program, a series of 35 carefully planned and routed rides that take place every Sunday from April through November. Members and guests showing up on any given Sunday can enjoy a scenic ride ranging from 80 to 100 miles to the lunch stop. Destinations are literally all over the map, covering some of the best roads in the Eastern Missouri-Southern Illinois area. Among this year’s destinations are Augusta, Bixby, Brussels, Hannibal, Hermann, Sikeston, and Springfield. And you can be sure that the route will take you on a twisty ride through some of this area’s most beautiful countryside. Safety is a priority of the Shadow Riders Club, and over the years they’ve crafted a set of Group Riding Guidelines to ensure a smooth, safe, and fun ride each week. Unique among riding clubs in the area, the Shadow Riders organize their rides into groups of eight riders, with a Road Captain leading and dragging each group. They’ve found that this makes navigating traffic on the way to the countryside much easier. The Shadow Riders Club welcomes riders of all makes and models of bikes, from all walks of life, of any age or gender — anybody who loves to ride and lives to ride. Windtramp I Ride to Live and Live to Ride Blasting down the highway, with nothing to hide. Born to be free, learned to be wild. I started this early, I was just a child. The broads, drugs, bikes, and booze. Nothing compared to a midnight cruise. Twist the wick and feel the power roar. In less than a minute, I began to soar. Flying so high like an eagle in the sky. But I knew someday, this dream was going to die. And that is why I know, it’s meant to be. I was born to be wild and I’ll die to be free! T.S. 01-10-2001 The poem above was writen by Tim Wall and we thank him much as we thank Ken from A.I.M. for his poem Hardtail Humor A redneck farm hand radios back to his boss, the farm manager: “Boss, I gotta big problem here. I hit a pig with the pickup. The pig’s ok but he’s stuck in the bull bar at the front of my pickup and is wriggling and squealing so much I can’t get him out”. The manager says, “OK there’s a 303 behind the seat, take it out and shoot the pig in the head and you’ll be able to remove him”. Five minutes later the farm hand calls back. “I did as you said, Boss. Took the 303 and shot the pig in the head and removed him from the bull-bars. No problem there, but I still can’t go on.” “Now what’s the problem?” raged the manager........... “Well Boss, it’s his motor bike. The flashing blue light is stuck under the right front wheel. You still there Boss?” bIKER bIZ bITS We welcome Kenn White the area’s newest AMSOIL dealer.
