Supply Vessel Market Report – May 2014 Market Overview Tug supply boats officially on the market for sale decreased from 179 to 138 vessels since May 2013 with the biggest changes being 14 fewer 8-9000HP, 11 less 5-6,000HP and 6 fewer 12,000HP+ AHTSs offered. Seven additional AHTSs are now for sale after a five year low was hit in February 2014. Although there was continued activity in other horsepower ranges, the greatest change in the last three months was 4 more 6-7,000HP and 3 more 3-4,000HP boats now on the market. The good news is that with exception of 3-4,000HP AHTSs, vessels now offered generally average several years newer than those last May due to continued scrapping of older tonnage. At the time of this report, 58 tug supply boats for sale were either built within the last 10 years or are newbuilding re-sales. Still, over half (50.72%) of tug supply boats currently for sale are 25 years of age or over. Counter-balancing these “old ladies” are eight newbuilding resales, in the 4,400-8,400BHP range, scheduled for delivery in 2014, with additional newbuilding resales shortly expected through 2016. One year ago, 63.13% of AHTSs for sale were built before 1988. In addition to our published listings, other vessels not officially on the market may be developed on a private and confidential basis. Supply Vessel Market Report – May 2014 Although there was a lot of activity with all sizes of PSVs coming on and off the market, the number of platform supply vessels for sale actually only increased by one boat since May 2013. There is though generally a greater selection of larger and younger PSVs available than one year ago. The greatest changes are 12 more 240’+ vessels with an average year built of 2007 vs. 1999 last year, 8 fewer 180-190 footers (1982 vs. 1979), 7 fewer & older 220-240’ (1989 vs. 1992) PSVs presently on the market. The number of PSVs dipped to a low of 108 for sale in November 2013. Numbers started climbing again, ending up with a 13 vessel increase in platform supply boats on the S&P market since our last report in February – notably adding four each relatively younger 240’+ and 170-180’ PSVs. Like the anchor handling tug supply boats, the PSVs now being offered are generally several years newer than those offered back in May 2013. As of the time of this latest report, Marcon International has available 35 supply boats built within the last ten years, which includes 12 newbuilding resales scheduled for delivery in 2014 and 2015. 58 PSVs, or 47.15%, are 25 years of age or older, with the oldest PSV listed built in 1969 compared to one year ago when 77 PSVs (63.11%) were older than 25 years, and the oldest was built in 1966. As with the AHTSs, this reflects the scrapping of older tonnage by some of the major players in this market worldwide. The dominant location for second-hand tonnage on the market is the Far East with 21.5% (up from 11.0% one year ago which reflects many newbuilding resales coming out of China), followed by the U.S. with 18.0%, Southeast Asia with 15.7% (note last year we combined Southeast Asia and Southwest Asia) and the Mid-East with 10.3%. Where location is unknown is 7.3%. The rest of the globe makes up the final 27.2% of locations. CAT is the principal main engine suppliers to this sector powering 47 of the supply & tug supply vessels listed for sale, followed by EMDs in 27, Cummins in 19 and GM in 14 vessels. MaK (also owned by CAT) and Niigata tie leading foreign manufacturers with 16 each, then 15 Wartsila, 11 Bergen and 70 units powered by various other manufacturers. In addition to those for sale, Marcon has 142 straight supply and tug supply vessels listed for charter worldwide, down seven from February 2014. Marcon’s Market Comments The offshore vessel sale and purchase market remains fairly active. Units of different varieties and ages are changing hands; however there still remains a large overhang of units for sale built pre-1985 that buyers are becoming increasingly reluctant to look at. But sales of a couple of older units have been reported with Seacor disposing of the “WAO Ethiope” and “Seacor Pennington” to two separate Nigerian buyers and Swire offloading “Pacific Lance” to Comarco. That East African seam has been quite profitable to Swire in recent asset disposals. Fairmount (recently bought out by Boskalis) finally sold their 1997 Japanese built support vessel “Fairmount Fuji” after six years on the market; whilst Toisa finally shifted from the lot their 1982 built DSV “Toisa Sentinel” after it had been laid up in Malaysia for several years after coming off a Petrobras contract. In the U.S., the very active Freedom Marine Services have now bought four vessels this past 12 months, the most recent pair being the “Clint Jett” and “JF Jett” after securing the former AHTSs San Miguel” and “Santa Cruz”. www.marcon.com Details believed correct, not guaranteed. Supply Vessel Market Report – May 2014 Havyard has signed a contract for the construction of a hybrid batterypowered Havyard 833 WE ICE PSV with Fafnir Offshore HF. The vessel is going to be designed by Havyard Design and Solutions in Fosnavaag and will be constructed at Havyard Ship Technology`s yard in Leirvik as newbuild number 126. Contract value is just above NOK 350 million and vessel is due to be delivered in July 2015. This latest contract is the second Havyard signed with the Icelandic offshore shipping company Fafnir. It will measure 89.7m x 19.6m and deadweight of 4,250T. Havyard 833 WE ICE is a newly developed design based on most recent technology within fuel economy and environmental friendliness. This PSV is designed to operate as efficiently as possible and with the least amount of influence from exposed waters, in say, the Arctic region. Hull lines that have recently been employed in a smaller PSV design (Havyard 832 L WE) and for windmill service vessels are developed for reduction of fuel consumption and increased comfort for crew both in calm and heavy seas. Design of the superstructure makes it easy to maintain an ice-free ship in Arctic areas. The vessel is designed according to the latest environmental demands such as Clean Design class; it has low emission engines and is prepared for catalysts. The greatest innovation onboard this vessel is that it is equipped with a hybrid battery powered diesel-electric propulsion system. “When we develop a new ship design we have two main focal points”, says Arve Helsem Leine, Design Manager of Havyard Design & Solutions as he continues; “Those are the customer`s demands in relation to the ship`s operational needs and area of operation and also to use the latest accessible technology and research tools in order to make the ship as efficient as possible. We have invested a lot in our design philosophy and in our calculation tools and methods for testing. We also work closely with key suppliers in developing good solutions for our designs and hybrid battery power is a good example of this.” The idea of hybrid battery diesel-electric propulsion system is the same as for hybrid cars, namely to produce energy as efficiently as possible while also having access to necessary power whenever it is needed. A typical PSV has large variations within its energy needs depending on the operation being carried out. Going from A to B demands a certain need for energy and a different need is created when it is operating by an oil rig. Weather and wind conditions, waves and currents, also play their part in the swift variations of energy requirements. In traditional diesel-electric propulsion systems the diesel generators` load will vary according to the alternating energy needs. This means that diesel engines cannot constantly operate within a load area where these engines have the lowest possible fuel consumption. With hybrid battery power you can constantly operate diesel generators at an optimal level. When energy demands vary you can either charge or discharge batteries, depending on whether the energy demands are lower or higher than the capacity of diesel generators in operation. Response time in relation to variation in power demands is also a lot shorter, so there is a quicker transfer of power to the ship`s thrusters which ensures a more precise and secure positioning, for example in operations by an offshore rig. The hybrid system for this ship is developed in close cooperation with Norwegian Electric Systems and shows how important cooperation within the value chain is, in order to bring forth the best products. This hull design combined with hybrid battery power ensure that a PSV in given operations uses 30 to 40% less fuel compared to a traditional PSV. This latest contract is the second Havyard has signed with the Icelandic offshore shipping company Fafnir Offshore. On 4th April the hull of Havyard`s newbuild 120, Fafnir`s first newbuild, arrived the Leirvik shipyard in Sogn, Norway. In April, BP on behalf of the Shah Deniz consortium signed a contract with Baku Shipyard worth $378 million to design and build a Subsea Construction Vessel (SCV). When completed, the SCV will be deployed for the Stage 2 development of the Shah Deniz field, which lies some 70km offshore in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea. The Shah Deniz Stage 2 project requires a subsea installation vessel to install the subsea structures over eleven years between 2017 and 2027. The vessel will include dynamic positioning to allow working in 2.5m significant wave height, a 750 metric tonne main crane for 600m subsea operation, an 18-man two-bell diving system, two work-class ROVs, a strengthened moon pool, two engine rooms with 6x4.4MW + 2x3.2MW engines and a deadweight of 5,000 metric tonnes at 6.5m draft. The SCV will be designed by Marine Technology Development, the ship design and development arm of Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M). The vessel is expected to be completed in April 2017. www.marcon.com Details believed correct, not guaranteed. Offered subject to prior sale or charter. 10 Marcon International, Inc. The PSVs will be diesel-electric, with Clean Design class and Damen’s wave piercing bow design. The first of the new PSVs will be delivered in 2016. Deliveries PSV “Juanita” was delivered from Kleven Verft, Ulsteinvik on 16 April 2014. Owners Ugland Offshore AS were awarded a charter contract by Statoil Petroleum AS for the vessel for two years with two additional one-year options. “Juanita” is a state-of-the-art PSV of the innovative SALT 100 design, integrating safety with environmentally friendly propulsion and operational flexibility. The vessel has a very unique feature. This ship was designed by Salt Ship Design in Norway and is powered by a pair of in-line contra-rotating propellers which are controlled independently by two highly efficient permanent magnet motors. This propulsion system was designed as a joint effort between Salt Ship Design and Scana Propulsion. Salt Ship Design notes, “Contra rotating propellers are in their nature more efficient than similar single propellers. Motors directly connected to the propellers gives fewer components, and improved energy conversion make the solution more efficient and safer compared to alternative solutions.” The permanent magnet motors feature an integrated electrical motor and gearbox which Scana says, “eliminates mechanical efficiency losses in the gearbox while simultaneously increasing the efficiency of the electrical motor.” Salt anticipates a 25 percent savings on fuel costs with this propulsion system as compared to conventional designs. The ship is also powered by a pair of thrusters located in the bow and stern. Deliveries in brief: AHTS “Far Sirius” (a UT 731 CD design ) delivered in April from Vard Langsten to Farstad Supply AS, a wholly owned subsidiary of Farstad Shipping ASA. The vessel will trade the spot market in the North Sea. The long-term financing of the vessel is arranged by Eksportkreditt Norge AS in cooperation with GIEK and Sparebank 1 SMN. Ulstein Verft AS delivered the seismic vessel “Polar Onyx” to GC Rieber Shipping. The vessel a 425’ Ulstein SX 121 deign construction vessel. www.marcon.com Details believed correct, not guaranteed. New Construction, Shipyard and Conversion News According to “Fairplay”, as of May 23, 2014, there were 7,001 ships over 299GRT on the World Orderbook. This is down 115 or 1.62% from 7,116 in February and up 808 or 13.05% over the last year. Of the 7,001 ships recorded on order, 759 (down 21) are Offshore Supply Vessels and 333 (down 9) are designated as “Offshore – Other” compared to February. In May 2013, there were 735 OSVs and 280 “Offshore-Other” vessels under construction. Of the 759 OSVs under construction, China leads the Orderbook with a total of 317 (down 3) OSVs being built. They are followed by USA 83, Brazil and India 54 each, Malaysia 39, Indonesia 34, 25 Singapore, 23 Vietnam, 21 the Netherlands, the UAE 17, Poland 16, 14 Japan, Romania 10, 8 each Norway and South Korea, Turkey 7, Spain and Sri Lanka 4 each, 3 each Russia and Thailand, 2 each Chile, Philippines and South Africa and 1 each Australia, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, Greece, Italy, Lanka, Malawi and Saudi Arabia. The 759 OSVs on the order books represents 10.55% of the global OSV fleet of “sea-going” vessels over 100GRT which now has an average age of 15 years compared to an average age of 16 years during second quarter 2013. www.marcon.com Details believed correct, not guaranteed. Once again, CAT power leads by far the propulsion packages, with engines in 199 OSVs followed by Cummins in 91, Niigata in 65, MaK 54, Wartsila 41, 27 MAN/MAN-B&W, Yanmar 26, MTU 18, Daihatsu 13, Bergens 9, 5 Rolls Royce, GE Marine 4, 3 Mitsubishi, Scania 2 and 1 each ABC, Chinese “Standard Type”, Non-propelled and Pielstick. Engines were not listed for 198 OSVs. The demand is increasing for higher horsepower. The highest portion of OSVs over 299GRT being built worldwide are now in the 4-5,000BHP with 103 OSVs or 13.6% of those OSVs where the horsepower is listed, followed by 76 OSVs or 10.0% and 73 or 9.6% being built in the 7-8,000HP and 5-6,000HP categories, respectively. No OSVs are shown under 1,000BHP, but this is most likely because most of the OSVs being built in this horsepower range will be under 299GRT. Last year at this time 12.0% each of the OSVs on the world order book were 3-4,000BHP and 7-8,000BHP vessels.
