S howtime Diamonds..................................................... Champagne reception................... Joseph Bonnar Jewellers, Edinburgh Harvey Nichols and James Thomson OBE Entertainment............................................ Will Pickvance’s Jazz Band, The Box, MGA Academy and Sugartown HRH The Duchess of Cornwall Lady Goodwin –Chair A message from Barnardo’s President Barnardo’s Scotland Development Board Deputy Chair and Showtime Chair I have been involved now with Barnardo’s for the past five years and have come to understand the tremendous breadth and depth of the work they do nationally but particularly here in Scotland. We have moved on fortunately from the days of large orphanages, but there are still a tremendous number of children and young people whose lives are chaotic and unhappy, who do not have the support of a loving family or who are not equipped to deal with the pressures of everyday life. I think we are all aware that there are children and young people who are abused or neglected or who become involved with drugs, alcohol or crime, but very few of us ever have any real contact with this part of life. © Mario Testino I am struck again and again by the way in which these children are taken under the Barnardo’s wing, often when everything else has failed. We will hear tonight from Danielle whose life has taken her down this path, of the many false starts she has had in trying to sort out her life, and how the intervention of Barnardo’s has helped her to finally turn her life around. The money we raise tonight will go directly towards helping these young people with finding somewhere safe to live, with counselling or employment – whatever is needed to break the cycle. Help us to show that, like Barnardo’s, we really do ‘Believe in Children’. I would like to thank everyone involved with Showtime: our generous donors and sponsors (without whom we could do nothing), our volunteers, and our wonderful (and glamorous) Showtime Committee for all their unstinting efforts. Thank you all for being here, and for helping us to support the work of Barnardo’s tonight. Michael’s story is based on the stories of the hundreds of thousands of vulnerable children we work with across the UK. Visit www.barnardos. org.uk/lifestory to hear Barnardo’s project workers talk about how Barnardo’s helps children like Michael. At Barnardo’s, we believe in children like Michael, regardless of their circumstances, gender, race, disability or behaviour. We believe in the abused, the vulnerable, the forgotten and the neglected. We will support them, stand up for them and . bring out the best in each and every child. We do this because we believe in children. It is with. your support that we can fight for their futures and ensure their stories don’t have to end like . they began. We need to raise £3 million every year to continue running the 98 services we have across Scotland. Without donors, Barnardo’s reserves will only last for 3 months before services need to start closing. We would ask you to be generous and in return, we will assure you that for every £1 we raise tonight 95p will go directly to our work and the other 5p goes to raising the next £1. 16 What your money can buy Whilst it’s lovely to go home at the end of the night with a fabulous auction prize, there’s no better feeling than making a donation directly to Barnardo’s crucial work in Scotland. It’s very simple, you can either make a donation using the electronic bidding system or ask a volunteer for a gift aid donation envelope. Here’s an idea of what your money could buy:- £25 gets a young girl off the streets for one night. This means she’ll get a warm bed, a hot meal – and most importantly, she’ll be safe. £50 pays for one week’s running costs for a community youth group for children living in a disadvantaged area. £100 covers three sessions with a psychologist to help a young person who has been sexually abused rebuild their life. £300 buys driving lessons – a licence being essential for many jobs – for one young person. £795 puts six young people through the Construction Skills Certificate Scheme which allows them to work on a building construction site. £1,500 provides one family with therapy sessions for a year, so the family and the young person can work together to reduce the risk of continued offending. £3,000 refurbishes and re-equips two Barnardo’s Scotland supported flats for young people who have recently left care. Don’t forget to complete a gift aid form to maximize your donation. 17 IBID INSTRUCTIONS Placing a bid The Auction this evening will be in two parts: The Live Auction with nine carefully-selected lots and the Silent Auction which includes beautiful properties for a break away, unique items from sporting history and smaller items, is perfect for gifts and treats . this Christmas.
