re you one of those folks who
have said to yourself, "Someday I'm going to write a book?"
Boy, I sure am. I knew from childhood that someday I would sit
down and write out a best seller. And you know what -- some
day I might actually do that.
But if you are one of those folks, and you've made the attempt,
like I have, many times over...you know what a long and difficult process that can be. That's why I admire the folks right
here in Preble County who have actually become published
authors.
This August, at the West Elkton Friends Meeting House, more
than twenty of these tenacious and gifted writers will be coming together for the first time. They will display, sign and sell
their creative works.
We have children's authors with
funny poems.
We have frightening authors of
horror tomes.
We have romantic authors to
swell your heart,
and funny mysteries to
make sides split apart.
We have authors of
inspirational stories
and local histories of
Preble's past glories.
We have authors of talent to
appeal to each taste.
Don't let this unique chance
go to waste!

The Darcy Connection / Elizabeth
Aston: Mr. Collins of Pride and Prejudice
is now the Bishop of Ripon, living with his
wife, Charlotte, and their two daughters,
who have reached marriageable age. The
elder, another Charlotte, is extraordinarily
beautiful, and her parents hope her looks
and connections will ensure a brilliant
marriage. Her sister, Eliza, while not as
handsome, possesses a lively intelligence
that, in Mr. Collins's opinion, is too like
her godmother, Mrs. Darcy.
In London, Charlotte's beauty wins her many admirers,
despite her small fortune. But Eliza's wit and attempts to
interfere in what she considers an unsuitable marriage for
her sister infuriate her family and Charlotte's suitor -- until
Eliza herself meets her match. New and old fans alike will
relish this witty, romantic, thoroughly entertaining novel
from a highly talented author. On order

Fantasy
Allan Pinkerton -A man of Fiction…and Fact
Pinkerton’s Secret / Eric
Lerner: This romantic adventure
conjures up the passionate life story
of the Civil War era's legendary
private eye, recounting dramatic
exploits and his clandestine love
affair with his female partner.
Meet the Man: Allan Pinkerton
Allan Pinkerton / James Mackay:
Though Pinkerton started the first
U.S. detective agency after successfully uncovering a counterfeit ring,
little was known about him. The author does an excellent job of tracing
Pinkerton's early life and his arrival in
the United States from Scotland.
Then he examines better-known aspects of Pinkerton's
career -- his part in Lincoln's train ride through Baltimore, investigation of the Confederate spy Rose
Greenhow, and association with Gen. George
McClellan, his mentor and hero. Mackay is perhaps too
apologetic in his treatment of Pinkerton's intelligence
reports to McClellan, which vastly overstated the number of Confederate troops, and he blames McClellan's
lack of initiative on political intrigue from Washington.
Nevertheless, Mackay's work will appeal greatly to
historians and Civil War specialists. Mark E. Ellis, Albany State
Univ. Lib., Ga. Copyright 1997 Cahners Business Information, Inc. Copyright Reed
Business Information Reed Elsevier Inc.
The phrase "private eye" can find its roots in the
Pinkerton Agency's trademark: a large, unblinking eye with the slogan "We Never Sleep."
Chow for the cowboy
The Texas Cowboy Cookbook: A History
in Recipes and Photos / Robb Walsh:
Robb Walsh digs deep into the culinary culture
of the Texas cowpunchers, beginning with the
Mexican vaqueros and their chile-based cuisine. He gives overdue credit to the largely
unsung black cowboys (one in four cowboys
was black, and many of those were cooks).
Cowgirls also played a role…
Here are a mouthwatering variety of recipes that include campfire and
chuckwagon favorites as well as the sophisticated creations of the New
Cowboy Cuisine:
• Meats and poultry: sirloin guisada, cinnamon chicken, coffeerubbed tenderloin
• Stews and one-pot meals: chili, gumbo, fideo con carne
• Sides: scalloped potatoes, onion rings, pole beans, field peas
• Desserts and breads: peach cobbler, sourdough biscuits,
old-fashioned preserves
Yee-ha!
Tame that
Texas-sized
appetite with
these hearty
recipes!
Through over a hundred evocative photos and
a hundred recipes, historical sources, and the
words of the cowboys (and cowgirls) themselves, the food lore of the Lone Star cowboy
is brought vividly to life.

The Complete Book of Garlic /
Ted Meredith: Worldwide, garlic
cultivation occupies over 2 million
acres of farmland, an area that has
more than doubled since 1970. Yet
even garlic fanciers may be unable
to tell hardneck from softneck, or
Purple Stripe from Rocambole, not to mention the
hundreds of cultivated varieties grown today, many
with distinct differences in taste and character. In
fact, the wealth of garlic varieties in nearly a dozen
horticultural groups rivals that of corn, carrots,
apples, and peaches. This book is the most comprehensive and in-depth guide available. On order

Divide, collect: for a fall swap, divide perennials that bloomed in the
spring or early summer. For a spring swap, divide late summer and fall
bloomers. When collecting seeds, store them in airtight containers and store
in a cool, dry place.
Collect your gardening friends: invitations, posters/flyers, gardening
forums, newspapers.
Determine size of swap: This will affect where you plan to hold the swap.
What to swap: perennial favorites, successful new additions to garden
Label offerings: be sure to include all information with your plants
Condition of plants: make sure that the plants you bring are healthy and
disease-free.
Pick your swap site: easily accessible, plenty of parking, alternative site
for inclement weather, access to water to keep plants fresh on hot days.
Determine trade rules before the swap: are pre -trades acceptable? Will
your exchange be first-come, first-serve? Have you made a list of plants to
be exchanged?
Do NOT propagate Trademarked or Patented plants: they are marked

Beyond Books: Your Donations are Vital
Marlene Ressler, Outreach Coordinator, would like to extend a HUGE Thank You to Eaton
McDonalds manager, Randy Blaich. The restaurant very generously donated the delicious food
that was served at March’s Beyond Books program. The theme was, of course, fast food.
It is hometown generosity like this that makes our nursing home programs possible!

Stories as told to Marlene during
nursing home visits…
I was having a conversation with one of my nursing
home ladies the other day and she began reminiscing
about how she used to go to a Carnegie Library sixty
years ago. She told me how she loved going to the
library. “Reading is one’s foundation for life,” she told
me. She also thinks of the library and reading every
time she hears my name. She told me how much she
has appreciated me for bringing
books on tape to her over the years.
It gladdens my heart to be able to
bring the library to those who are

Just Bizarre
Frontier Justice in the Wild West:
Bungled, Bizarre, and Fascinating
Executions: On the Western Frontier,
where jailhouses were few and gunslinging, cattle rustling, and stagecoach robberies were common, legal executions
served as both a deterrent and as entertainment. In some cases, invitations summoned spectators - and they came in
droves. From 1854 to 1910, in the lawless towns of the Old
West, more than one thousand men (and two women) were
executed. And while most of the punishments went off
"without a hitch," a handful of necktie parties and firing
squads stand out in the annals of history.
Tiger Force / Michael Sallah & Mitch
Weiss: At the outset of the Vietnam War, the
Army created an experimental fighting unit that
became known as "Tiger Force." The Tigers
were to be made up of the cream of the cropthe very best and bravest soldiers the American
military could offer. They would be given a long
leash, allowed to operate in the field with less
supervision. Their mission was to seek out enemy compounds and hiding places so that
bombing runs could be accurately targeted. They were to go where
no troops had gone, to become one with the jungle, to leave themselves behind and get deep inside the enemy's mind.
The experiment went terribly wrong.

he library has added a
new and important format to
its collection. Seedlings
Braille Books for Children
are books that provide mainstream popular literature to
blind and visually impaired
children who read, or who are
learning to read, Braille. All
stages of reading development
are covered, from board books
to picture books to classic juvenile literature. Braille is added
to the board books on a clear
plastic strip. Books for older
children contain Braille words
that are matched line for line.
FYI
Braille includes two systems:
Uncontracted Braille AKA Grade
One Braille or alphabet Braille uses character-by-character transcription,
substituting the equivalent
Braille character for its printed
equivalent. It is used only by
beginnings.
Contracted Braille AKA Grade Two
Braille uses a system of contractions to reduce space and to
speed the process of reading.
