Rainforest Zipline Adventure
The languid, laidback rhythms of ‘Fiji Time’ are truly addictive, but every now and then you
get the urge to speed things up a bit. Like flying through the rainforest at up to 60km/h and
up to 30m off the ground.
Once I’m trussed up in a super-strong harness and safety gear, I follow guides Kitione and
Atu through a jungle path to the first of eight platforms perched in sturdy trees. The first
slender cable disappears into the dappled shade of the rainforest, and I lean back in my
harness and let gravity take over.
I soon realise that some natural forces are somewhat beyond my control. As I accidentally perform a slow spin midway through the first 200m expanse, I begin to approach the
target platform – backwards. A last-second twist of my torso corrects my orientation, and
I squeeze softly on the cable to halt my trajectory. After a few lazy days melting into Fiji
Time, the compressed thrills of a zipline adventure are providing perfect balance.
The remaining seven stretches soon assume their own energetic rhythm. With a whoop
Kitione heads off first, flying upside down at will like a circus trapeze performer, or securing
photographic evidence of my efforts to avoid slamming into a statuesque Fijian kauri tree
like a mistimed Tarzan.
There’s time for one more short, sharp thrill from the penultimate platform, which is
guarded by a plump millipede. Safely through all eight sections, I settle back into Fiji Time,
with the promise of a well-earned Vonu Lager at sunset.
