He grew up in Berwick on a farm where draft horses were the sole source of power for the equipment. He exhibited his first steer at Acton Fair in 1953. He and his brothers exhibited 4-H steers at Acton Fair for many years, winning multiple championships. In 1954, Hurricane Carol destroyed Acton Fair and at 13 years of age, Dr. Collins spent the night under the grandstand with 4 steers when his father could not return because of downed trees in the roadways leading to the fairgrounds. This was before the era of cell phones. For many years afterwards, Dr. Collins would relay this story saying that this was a very long night for a young boy all alone on the fairgrounds. He is a graduate of Berwick High School, the University of New Hampshire, and Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. He returned to Maine upon graduation and has provided health care for 48 years to the farm animal population in the Northeast. Dr. Collins is past president of the Maine Veterinary Medical Association, was appointed by Governor James Longley to the Board of Veterinary Medicine, and for 20 years served on the committee which developed the guidelines for the control of infectious disease for the Maine Department of Agriculture. He was named to Who’s Who in Veterinary Medicine and Surgery in 1986 and in 2012 was elevated to Honor Roll status of the American Veterinary Medical Association at its national conference in San Diego, CA. Known as “Dr. Don”, he still provides veterinary medical services to the farm animals in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts. Dr. Collins’ connection to the fairs covers many years and includes various services. He was a 4H leader in York County for 10 years. He has judged most of the beef cattle shows in New England, has been Veterinarian on call at many fairs, including Acton, and is currently the resident veterinarian at the Fryeburg Fair, with 5300 animals under his care. Dr. Collins has donated his time in other areas. He was elected to the SAD 60 School Board. He coached youth baseball for 12 years. He also has given many talks to youth groups, students at the University of New Hampshire, as well as to breed associations regarding animal health. He was the featured veterinarian at the World Conference on Animal Power held through the University of Virginia. He resides in Berwick with his wife Charlotte, who is the School Nurse at Wells Junior High. They have a son and a daughter, both of whom are graduates of the University of Maine. Daniel, who is a math lecturer at Kingsborough Community College, and Valerie, who is a professor of Exercise Science at Sacred Heart University. They have one grandson, Cooper, and one granddaughter Quinn. Dr Collins is very humbled by this recognition. He states that he was merely doing the job he was trained to do; training conducted by some of the world’s premier veterinary faculty at that time. A special tribute goes to Dr. Francis Fox, his mentor at Cornell and a special man in Dr. Collins’ life. He wishes to thank everyone who has allowed him to provide health care to some of the most wonderful animals on the earth; the ones who have provided food, fiber and power to us all. Lastly, he wishes to thank Charlotte for all of the missed meals and holidays while he was away caring for animals, many of whom have no time schedule. 8 www.actonfair.net Premium List 2015 Hey Kids - want to help a farmer milk his cow, gather eggs from the chickens and help plant his garden?
