Fall 2009 / Issue 43 Meet Your Neighbour: Jennifer Alton by Amy Gourley J in this issue: Hawkestone Market Fall Events Uncle Winston Hawkestone Singers ... and much more! ennifer Alton: volunteer extraordinaire with energy to spare! For those of you who have been involved in any of HAACA’s events (as a volunteer, participant or both), you probably have already met Jennifer. For those of you who have not met this talented and dedicated lady, watch out! This is one person who’s not afraid to jump right in and get her feet wet. Happily married to her long time partner Ford, and mother to three children: Michael (26), Gillian (25) and Katrina (23), the Alton family moved to the Hawkestone area in 1997 from Georgetown, Ontario. After settling into their dream home which they designed and built themselves, it didn’t take long for Jennifer to get involved in her new community. She became a Director with HAACA just two weeks after they moved in and eventually was elected Treasurer, a position she still retains. unity, comm her to back g givin to With a background in catering, Jennifer took on the feeds come When it Jennifer believes that what you give you get back. ~ continued on page 6 Welcome to the Oro-Medonte Minor Sports Association by Anna Proctor H AACA and the Hawkestone community would like to welcome Sport Administrator Christine Richards and the Oro-Medonte Minor Sports Association to the Hawkestone Hall, which will be the site of the new office for this association. Thanks to an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant, the OMMSA has the funding to pay for office space at the Hall and for Christine’s salary for two years, to get this exciting venture off the ground. The OMMSA was formed to help minor sports groups in Oro-Medonte with events, registration, planning, and viability. Member groups in this association include Oro-Medonte Minor Soccer, Oro-Medonte Skating Club, Oro Minor Hockey, Vasey Minor Ball and Oro-Medonte Minor Ball. The OMMSA will be holding a fundraising group night at a Toronto Marlies game on December 30 for only $25 per ticket, with $5 of the ticket price going to support the OMSSA. Ticket price includes skating beforehand, as well as entry to the fan tunnel and fun in Marlies Alley. For more information about this event or about the OMMSA contact Christine at 353-3000 or at www.ommsa.ca. -1- OMMSA’s Sports Administrator Christine Richards. Hello and welcome to another season of activities and events for the community at the Hawkestone Hall. A special hello and welcome to all of the new families that have moved to this beautiful area. President’s Message by Paul Harris, President of HAACA O ur community User Groups return for another exciting year of activities: the Scout Beavers and Cubs; the Hawkestone Singers; the Adult Scottish Dancers; T.O.P.S. a weight-loss support group; and a new bagpipe and drum group. Also the Youth Dance group, the Youth Gourmet Club and the very popular Friday Euchre will be back again this Fall. The Library will also be adding new extended hours Wednesdays and Thursdays along with Saturday mornings. There is a lot to do for both youth and adults at your Community Hall, so check out this Hawkester for the times and contact coordinators. Hawkestone continues to be a welcoming and active volunteer driven community. Volunteers are the backbone of every community. The Hawkestone area is very fortunate to have so many folks who understand the value of volunteering. A special thank you goes out to all the individuals and businesses who helped with the Family Fun Day event at the Big Curve Acres Farm, the Hawkestone 142 Canada Day Celebration and the start-up of the new Farmers’ Market. Review your Hawkester for the calendar of new events and help support the fundraising events listed. The Community Hall is owned by the Township and is maintained and operated by the Hawkestone and Area Community Association /Hall Board, who coordinate the use of the hall and oversee policies and by-laws established by the Township. Each year the Hall Association/Board must raise funds to cover 100% of the operating costs and 50% of the capital improvements to the Hall and property. If you are new to the community or a long time resident, please come out and get involved with the Community Association/Board. You are invited to the next meeting, the first Monday of every month at 7:30 pm at the Hall. Please contact any of the Directors for more information. Effective July 1, the Hawkestone General Store changed ownership. The -2- Executive and Directors of HAACA extend a thank-you to Peter Bodle for all his support given over the years to the Association; the new owners Michael and Helen Kim are welcomed to our community. A new President will be elected at the Annual General Meeting on November 2 and I would like to take this opportunity to extend a special thank-you to all of the Executive, Directors, volunteers and local businesses for their involvement and support given over the past five years. Editor’s Note: Thank you to President Paul for the many volunteer hours he has donated to the Hall and HAACA’s activities; we really appreciate you! After a busy summer rehearsing with Roy Menagh (Music Director of the Orillia Wind Ensemble), the choir is set to perform at the Oro African Church’s 160th Anniversary celebration at Trinity United Church on Saturday October 3. For those that aren’t involved with music, dance, and sports groups, there is still a place for them to develop character and independence: Scouting! She has also catered many of HAACA’s fundraising events, including the famous Jamaican-themed Winter Dun Gone dance. In fact, many people attended these catered events with the pleasure of knowing they will enjoy scrumptious food created by Jennifer. She has offered theme-style cooking classes to local residents both young and old(er) but seems to prefer cooking with the kids. When asked why, she said, “Kids are open and creative and not afraid to make mistakes. They really have fun with it, which is fun for me.” She has inspired kids nine years of age and up with her Junior Gourmet Club which is now going into its fourth session. When it comes to giving back to her community, Jennifer believes that what you give you get back. “You meet wonderful people who share the same goals, and lasting friendships are created as a result. You also make your community a more enjoyable place for the whole family to live and play.” Volunteering her time and talents is not the only thing that keeps Jennifer busy. She also works full-time at the Speech Clinic in Barrie and runs a small business of her own called ‘Apple of My Pie’, selling her delectable homemade pies and cookies at the Farmers’ Market in Orillia as well as the new Hawkestone Farmers’ Market. You may be thinking, with all this time spent volunteering, working and running a small business when does she have time to spend with her family? No problem, they volunteer and work right alongside her. It’s definitely a family affair with the Altons. Ford has become a self-confessed master pastry maker and works the market stalls like a pro, and the kids help out when and wherever necessary and can often be seen at the markets as well as at any one of the many community events that Jennifer is involved with. Jennifer and Ford have now em- & CAMPGROUND -6- barked on a yet another business endeavour, launching a new company in 2008 called “Caribbean Concierge”. They have essentially become travel consultants and vacation planners; the destination being their home away from home, the beautiful island of Jamaica where they have been visiting Jennifer’s extended family and vacationing for many years. The idea for this business came after celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary in Jamaica with some friends from Hawkestone. Jennifer organized the whole trip including flights, rental of a beautiful villa complete with a fully staffed kitchen, and a driver for day trips and airport pick up. They realized that many people might enjoy this type of vacation; an “all-inclusive” without lining up with 500 people at the buffet. Their hope is to slowly build this business as they head into retirement. To check out their website, go to www. caribbeanconcierge.ca. Thanks Jennifer and family for all your hard work, and good luck! New Hawkestone Market A Huge Success by Anna Proctor H awkestone tried on a new event this summer- a Farmers’ Market! After the rousing success of Canada Day, someone was heard to mention that she always thought we should try having a market in Hawkestone. Around here, that’s all that’s needed to get a dynamic group of volunteers together and we did- twelve of them! Within two weeks, we had flyers distributed, an ad in the North Simcoe News, thirteen vendors and a market manager. The Hawkestone Farmers’ Market opened on July 28 with hundreds of people and all of our elected officials there to make it official! We also had the new Hawkestone Pipe Band play, and have had lots of great live music at the market ever since. Originally planned as a five week pilot project, the market was expanded (music man!), Jennifer Alton (she who to ten weeks, from July 28 to October will jump in and make it happen) 3, and has been a huge success. Lots of local and not so local farm fans came out to enjoy the petting area, a wagon ride, a barn tour, and delicious HAACA BBQ hotdogs and drinks. This event raised a nice amount for HAACA’s coffers, going towards paying expenses at our beloved Hall. Thank you especially to Henry and Rita Regelink for donating their time and beautiful farm to help HAACA out. See you next year!
