Spring 2008 - San Bernardino Community College District
Spring 2008, Volume 7, Number 2 COMMUNITY NEWS San Bernardino Valley College • Crafton Hills College • Professional Development Center • KVCR FM-TV “Enhancing Your Life With Quality Education” F rom the Chancellor After 47 years in education, I will be retiring at the end of this June. I’ve been the Chancellor of the San Bernardino Community College District for eight years. As I prepare to leave, I’m proud of accomplishments in some key areas: Donald F. Averill Accreditation – Both colleges are up for renewal of their accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in October 2008. While accreditation standards are getting tougher-with requirements for documented student learning outcomes and integration of accreditation standards into all decision making--I’m comfortable that both San Bernardino Valley College and Crafton Hills College will be ready for their visits in the fall. District Facilities – Measure M, our $500 million general obligation bond on the ballot last February, was approved by over 66 percent of the voters! This bond will ensure that the two colleges can address the top priority projects in their master plans. Valley College will begin construction on three new buildings this summer (North Hall replacement, a Media/Communications building, and a Physical Science building). Crafton Hills College is completing several infrastructure projects that will support a new Community Recreation Facility (including a swimming pool) and a new Learning Resources Center. KVCR Capital Campaign – When I joined the district in 2000, there was a federal mandate for all radio and television stations to undergo a digital conversion by 2009. KVCR-FM/TV kicked off a capital campaign in 2004 to help fund this conversion. We have now passed the $27 million mark and completed the conversion to digital. The digital conversion allows KVCR to multi-cast and develop targeted programming. In addition, KVCR has expanded its programming to the Coachella Valley and has entered a partnership with the College of the Desert that includes a broadcast program for high school and community college students in the desert. It also gives KVCR access to a larger audience and future membership for PBS programming. Technology Leadership – Our district has moved from the infancy of technology to a fully integrated system that supports leading-edge instruction and administrative applications. The District will be the depository and provider for video streaming technology for the state community colleges and has partnerships with the university system. Economic and Workforce Development – The development of workforce programs for high pay, high demand occupations in logistics, transportation, and manufacturing is a hallmark of our District. Over the last few years, San Bernardino CCD has been a leader in training for incumbent workers and emerging occupations including nano-technology. Thank you for your support of the San Bernardino Community College District as we continue to enhance our community with quality education. Donald F. Averill, Ed.D. Gustuson & Patrick Fite Fifty-four-year old Crafton Hills College (CHC) student and Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Sally Shidler says it’s never too late to go back to school. “My three babies are all grown up and I decided to go back and get my Registered Nursing (RN) license,” said Shidler of Redlands. Shidler decided to attend CHC to take a few science courses required to get into most RN programs. “I picked up schedules from CHC and used the ‘buddy system’ to get used to being back into the school environment,” she said. “My good friend Gerri (Pollard) and I enrolled together, and it’s been great.” “Gerri is also an LVN wanting to bridge into the RN program,” Shidler said. “She’s the one who encouraged me to return to college. She has been so excellent in encouraging me.” Shidler referred to the Bible to describe her friendship with Pollard: “Deep calls onto deep,” she said. “Iron sharpens iron.” Based on her experience attending CHC with her friend, Shidler recommended the “buddy system” to students returning to college later in life. She emphasized the value of a mutual support system as well as the fun they’ve had. “In fact, a ‘buddy system’ would be good for any age,” Shidler said. “The experiences with Gerri at college have Left to right, Sally Shidler, left, and her friend Gerri Pollard have returned to college later in life to further their careers. The two are Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) and are taking science courses required to bridge into Registered Nursing (RN) programs. They are attending Crafton Hills College. It’s opened our eyes to a lot of new things. We’ve learned a lot in our classes, and we’ve also learned to laugh together a lot.” Since attending CHC, Shidler has experienced positive changes in her outlook about education, most especially with math. As a young girl, Shidler struggled with math and was traumatized by an unkind teacher who told her she was never going to “get it.” It took her almost half a century to dispel that feeling. Shidler enrolled in chemistry with CHC Chemistry Professor Kimberly Salt, and it forever changed her view on math. “She made it click for me, finally,” Shidler said. “Dr. Salt used food examples to portray chemical equations, like cooking a brownie. It was so empowering to me to finally get it.” The entire college experience at CHC has been enriching for Shidler. “It has impacted me by giving me the self-confidence that I can do anything,” she said. “The atmosphere is a caring institution, and I feel that.” According to Shidler, everyone has been more than willing to assist her. Her motto is, “Just ask.” Shidler also praised the teaching of biology Professor Lisa Shimeld. “I’ve been blessed with two extremely wonderful teachers here,” Shidler said. “Lisa and Kim are great.” In addition to attending CHC, Shidler is a nursevolunteer for Rescue Task Force, a non-profit volunteer based organization that responds to natural and man made disasters all over the world. Most recently, Shidler was in the jungles of Honduras helping to provide food, medical supplies and treatments in the region. She believes everyone has something to give. Shidler encourages others, regardless of age, to go to college and have an open mind about learning. “Education helps you make the correct choices in life,” she said. “It opens doors that would otherwise never be open to you. It allows you to get out of your own head and see other people’s viewpoints.” Shidler plans on completing her classes at CHC and then pursue her Registered Nursing degree. She would like to eventually specialize in hospice.
