JUNE 2013
A Message from the ED
First 5 San
Bernardino wishes
all families a safe
and
happy
summer!
With the end of the
school year fast
approaching, some
parents across San Bernardino County
will proudly attend their children's
preschool graduations while far too
many families and their children will
miss out on this important milestone.
As First 5 San Bernardino strives to
strengthen the County’s positioning for
receiving additional early education
funding, technical assistance for
childhood development specialists and
overall support for the Countywide
Vision and its Cradle to Career
continuum, we continue to be hopeful
that the movement to prioritize and
promote quality early education in
every sector remains strong, despite
t he seemingly insur mountable
obstacles, like apathy, lack of money
and political clout.
In San Bernardino County and all of
California, half of all low-income
children lack access to State Preschool
or Head Start, and too many lowincome infants and toddlers lack any
access to evidence-based programs
and other supportive services such as
voluntary home visiting programs.
There was plenty of buzz related to a
recent op-ed piece in the New York
Times by columnist Gail Collin’s
related to President Obama’s
Preschool for All proposal. She stated
that "...nothing major is going to
happen for early-childhood education
without an enormous groundswell of
June
public demand," Collins went on to say
that “This is a cause that's extremely
popular in theory. But its advocates have
no power to reward or punish.
Lawmakers who labor on behalf of
preschool programs may get stars in
heaven, but they don't get squat in
campaign contributions. And the ones
who eliminate money for infant care
programs have no fear whatsoever...”
Pretty sobering! This illustrates why it is
more important than ever that First 5
advocates for what we know is crucial to
the optimum development of our
children ages prenatal through five –
quality education beginning at the
earliest possible years to prepare
children for success in school and in life.

Rethink Your Drink!
As the weather heats up, stay
hydrated and healthy with these
tips:
• Try infusing your water with
fruit! Watermelon, lemon and
other fruits can make a glass
of water tasty!
San Bernardino – First 5 San Bernardino in partnership with Safe
Kids Inland Empire, Drowning Prevention Network and County of
San Bernardino Regional Parks presented the 2nd Annual Summer
Swimfest – Operation Splash on Friday, June 7, 2013 from
12:00pm to 5:30pm at Jerry Lewis Swim Center-Perris Hill Park.
Water safety was the key message to the event, bringing families
with children together to be aware of the preventable danger of
drowning. Participants were provided tools and information to
swim safe this summer.
In order to attend the free swim session, attendees had to visit the
ABC’s of Water Safety booth for information on how to swim
safely with proper supervision. Family members stepped up to be
supervisors, wearing their “Water Watcher” tags provided by
First 5 San Bernardino, reminding the individual to stay attentive
with their children while in or around water. Over 20 agencies
participated in the resource fair, with 99.1FM KGGI, 101.5FM
LAZER Radio and magician duo, Rafael & Katia as featured
entertainment at the event.
Check out our Facebook page for more photos of the event at

• Two juice boxes can have
more sugar than one can of
soda. Substitute those choices
with milk or water instead.
• Keep your child’s added sugar
intake to less than 4 teaspoons
per day.
Families practiced CPR tactics at the Swimfest
with San Bernardino American Emergency
Response.
Attendees wait for the first swim session at
Jerry Lewis Family Swim Center.

Capacity Building Academy: Third-Annual
Funders Forum to be held June 24, 2013
First 5 San Bernardino will host the Third Annual
Funders Forum for its Capacity Building Academy
(CBA) program on Monday, June 24, 2013. This
year’s forum will provide five agencies the
opportunity to gain insight on their capacity
building goals from a panel including
representatives of San Manuel Band of Mission
Indians, Citizens Business Bank and Kaiser
Permanente. The event will be held at First 5 San
Bernardino’s Large Conference Room, 330 N. D
Street - 5th Floor, San Bernardino, CA 92415 from
12:00pm-3:00pm.
In an effort to engage and empower non-profit
agencies to meet the needs of children age zero
to 5 as identified in the Strategic Plan for First 5
San Bernardino, Social Entrepreneurs, Inc. was
selected to provide capacity building services in
the initiative, which formed the Capacity Building
Academy program.
Cedar House Life Change Center held the Before You Were Born
Perinatal Program Graduation on May 23, 2013, celebrating
women who taken steps to better their lives for their unborn
children.
San Bernardino Adult School Parent
Education Graduation
CBA was implemented following Commission
approval of the contract on May 5, 2010. It’s a
structured 10 month, team-building based
curriculum in which agencies plan how they will
build internal capacity to pursue and secure
resources to address their agency’s long term
needs. The Academy culminates with a Funder’s
Forum which brings participating agencies
together with local private and corporate
foundations to experience a funder’s perspective
of their efforts to reach sustainability.

Academy, visit Social Entrepreneurs, Inc. at

The San Bernardino Adult School Parenting Center celebrated
parents and their children as participants in the preschool program

youngest learners. She stated that as a former teacher, she
knows firsthand that when a child starts school already
behind, it is extremely difficult to catch up. She is working
hard to ensure that California seizes the new federal
momentum around investing in high-quality early education in
those crucial years before the child enters kindergarten.

And finally, with summer upon us, First 5 San Bernardino
would like to share that the Nutrition Network of CDPH funds
the Summer Meals Coalition. Summer Meal programs present
an untapped opportunity to combat childhood hunger and
obesity when school is out and ensure that all children should
have access to good nutrition throughout the year.

A father’s presence in a child’s life can significantly impact their
development as they become adults. First 5 San Bernardino
encourages fathers to take time with their children to reduce the risk
of adversities a child can experience in their future. Here’s a few
activities you can do with your child:
• Reading to your child is a great way to bond and
build your child’s literacy skills for preschool.
•Playing and running with a child keeps them fit, builds
their confidence and develops their motor skills.
