THE PREMIERS PLANS FESTIVAL
Dedicating itself to the discovery of new talent in European cinema and allowing others to discover European film heritage since 1989, the Angers Premiers Plans Festival has become an emblematic cultural
meeting that is recognized by film professionals, followed by a large inquisitive audience, and supported
by many big names.
The Aims of the festival
To convey new European directors through a selection of a hundred first films presented in seven competitive sections.
To discover film history and heritage thanks to retrospectives on national cinematographies, tributes to
major and unrecognized authors and actors, programs on specific themes.
Highlighting the diversity of European cinema by gathering professionals on questions relative to the
production and circulation of European films.
To educate a new public on European cinema by favoring the young public to participate to the Festival.
To support scriptwriters and directors in their writing work by inviting professional actors to read scripts
of first short and feature films in public before shooting the film.

THE OFFICIAL SELECTION
Young European filmmakers, invited in Angers, come to present their first films to the audience, industry
professionals and press.
Almost 100 films will be screened, made by around 100 new European directors:
- More than 80 films in the 6 sections of the Official Selection. More than 200 000 Euros in awards are
givent out by juries and the public at the end of the Festival.
- More than 20 other films are screened out of competition in Free Form, Next Shots and Beijing First Film

Robert Bresson
When you ask filmmakers about their major influences, the name Robert Bresson is the one that is most
often brought up. The same answer is also given by a large number of critics whose vocation came from
seeing the grace of Pickpocket or the tribulations of the donkey in Au hasard Balthazar (Balthazar)...
This retrospective provides an opportunity to see, again or for the first time, the master’s films on the big
screen and to explore the legacy of someone who, in only 13 feature-length films, (from Les Anges du
péché (Angels of Sin) to L’Argent (Money)) distilled an idea of the quintessence of cinema.

Lars von Trier
No introduction is needed for Lars von Trier, who is one of the most radical, audacious and innovative
directors in Europe (a continent which casts a heavy shadow over his first films). For more than 30 years
he has built up a dense body of work, made up of obsessional motifs, narrative explorations, (successful)
pictorial endeavours and breaks… Film after film, and film against film… Each new project is a minor revolution, sometimes in contradiction with the previous one. From the aesthetic and technical experiments
of his first films (The Element of Crime, Europa), documentary pastiches (The Boss of it All), and incursions
into series (the sublime Kingdom), Lars von Trier has explored and invented all kinds of ideas; a simple video camera to film The Idiots, a hand-held camera to reinvent melodrama in Breaking the Waves,
hundreds of other for the choreographies of Dancer in the Dark, a few props and some chalk marks on
the ground for the studio sets in his recreation of America (Dogville, Manderlay)… only a few rare filmmakers have taken such risks and gone as far in constantly exploring the language of cinema, in inventing
new narratives… Lars von Trier’s films have often been contentious, and this is also the case for his latest
film released in France in January, which no-one has yet seen but which is nevertheless controversial:
Nymphomaniac. This retrospective is an opportunity to (re)discover all the aspects of his work and to
confirm his stimulating and unique place in modern cinema.

Tribute to Patrice Chéreau
Premiers Plans will be paying tribute this year to Patrice Chéreau, who died in October. A theatre director
at 22, he worked tirelessly for a decade on directing stage plays and operas before moving into film. In
1974 he made his first film, The Flesh of the Orchid an adaptation of a novel by James Hadley Chase. In
parallel to his flourishing theatrical career, Patrice Chéreau gave French cinema ten films, from Judith
Therpauve to Intimacy, The Wounded Man to Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train. Ten dark works,
which speak of death and the breakdown of romantic relationships. Showered with prizes, Patrice Chéreau had his first public success in 1994 with Queen Margot, a bloody incursion into the France of the
Wars of Religion. Patrice Chéreau made no more films after Persécution in 2009; he was present at last
year’s Aix en Provence Festival, where he triumphed directing Elektra. An extremely generous man, Patrice Chéreau came to Premiers Plans on many occasions; a very loyal director, he forged long-lasting
relationships with his technicians and actors, the first of which being Dominique Blanc, Jean-Hugues
Anglade, Pascal Greggory and Bruno Todeschini.

Bo Widerberg
Bo Widerberg (1930-1997) burst into the world of cinema in 1962 with his book A Vision of Swedish
Cinema, in which he criticised the elitism and rigidity of Swedish cinema. Ever loyal to this confession of
faith, he went on to make humanist film focussing on everyday life (The Baby Carriage, Raven’s End) and
class struggle (Ådalen Riots). Later he successfully moved into costume dramas with Elvira Madigan and
detective films with The Man on the Roof, while still keeping the free, spontaneous tone which made him
the forerunner of the Swedish new wave.

After Isabelle Carré, Jacques Gamblin and Denis Lavant, this year Denis Podalydès will be the guest of
Premiers Plans and the Nouveau Théâtre d’Angers. He will perfom Le Cas Jekyll on stage and will present
several films.
Le Cas Jekyll : Alone on stage, Denis Podalydès embodies alternately Dr. Jekyll and his evil twin, Mr. Hyde,
created to statisfy his least acceptable urges. An amazing acting performance by a great member of the
Comédie Française…

Metamorphosis
Cinema likes to frighten us. There is nothing more disturbing than the transformation of a body,
the moment when it changes shape. This can be highlighted by special effects. But it is also an opportunity to rethink our own metamorphoses, those of childhood with Alice, those of psychological of moral
changes in the world around us (District 9), and changes in relation to ourselves (Beauty and the Beast, Dr

the Forum of Le Quai.
