Hallo Laserdisc- und DVD-Fans,
liebe Filmfreunde!
Darf ’s auch ein bisschen mehr sein? Unsere
Kunden wissen es ja schon längst, dass wir
stets bemüht sind, Ihnen Filme in den bestmöglichen (und damit längsten oder Neudeutsch “uncut”) Versionen auf DVD und
Blu-ray zu besorgen. Denn wir sind der
Meinung, dass es nichts Schlimmeres gibt,
als ein Filmwerk durch unangebrachte
Schnitte sinnlos zu entstellen. Seit Einführung der neuen Richtlinien für die FSKFreigaben vor einigen Jahren wird in deutschen Landen soviel gekürzt wie lange
nicht mehr. Und die Schere macht auch
nicht Halt vor Kinofilmen. So wird die
Twentieth Century Fox Deutschland MEIN
NAME IST KHAN, das neueste Werk von
Karan Johar, gleich mit einer um über 40
Minuten gekürzten Fassung in die bundesdeutschen Kinos bringen! Auch wenn der
deutsche Filmverleiher immer wieder betont, dass die Kurzfassung vom Regisseur
abgesegnet sei, so werden echte
Bollywood-Fans diesen Film im Kino ganz
sicher boykottieren. Und das zu recht, wie
wir meinen. Im Falle von MEIN NAME
IST KHAN wird natürlich nicht im Hinblick auf die FSK-Freigabe gekürzt, sondern um den Film auf knapp zwei Stunden
Spielzeit zu minimieren. Denn nur so lassen sich mehr Vorstellungen pro Tag in den
Kinos realisieren. Mehr Vorstellungen bedeutet letztendlich mehr Umsatz. Und so
ist diese monströsen Kürzung ausschließlich dem Profitdenken des Filmverleihs in
die Schuhe zu schieben. Darum freuen wir
uns umso mehr darüber, dass die für August in den USA angekündigte DVD den
Film in seiner vollen Lauflänge von 165
Bisher leider ohne zufriedenstellendes
DVD- oder Blu-ray-Release:
der norwegische Film TROUBLED WATER
Minuten beinhalten wird. Ob dies dann
später auch für eine deutsche DVD des
Films gilt, steht momentan noch in den
Sternen. Wer nicht so lange warten möchte
und auf Nummer Sicher gehen will, der darf
sich vertrauensvoll an uns wenden.

Erinnern Sie sich noch an unsere Ausführungen zur etwas missglückten DVD mit
den FANTASY FILMFEST SHORTS?
Dass Deutschland mit solchen Ärgernissen
nicht alleine dasteht, förderte unsere jüngste Recherche zu einem ganz anderen Film
ans Tageslicht. Es handelt sich um den
norwegischen Film TROUBLED WATER,
der mit zum Besten gehört, was unser
Filmblogger Wolfram Hannemann bislang in
diesem Jahr im Kino gesehen hat. So ein
Film gehört natürlich in die DVD-Sammlung. Ob es ein deutsches Release geben
wird, steht momentan noch nicht fest. Aber
in Skandinavien ist bereits eine DVD verfügbar. Die hat zwar den Originalton in
norwegischer Sprache in imposanten Dolby
Digital 5.1 EX auf der Scheibe, doch es gibt
weder deutsche noch englische Untertitel.
Und in Dänisch oder Finnisch sind wir
leider nicht so fit. Da kam die Botschaft,
dass es den Film auch in den USA bereits
auf DVD gibt, gerade recht. Denn dort gibt
es dankenswerterweise englische Untertitel
zum Originalton. Doch als Tonformat haben sich die Amerikaner – warum auch
immer – nur für Dolby Digital 2.0 entschieden! Bei einem Film mit einer solch
ausgefeilten und dynamischen Tonspur wie
TROUBLED WATER ein echtes “No go!”.
Warten wir also gebannt auf eine deutsche
Veröffentlichung mit perfektem Sound. Die
Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt.

Remake me, baby!
In Zürich hängen seit kurzem die ersten Poster für The
Karate Kid, das Remake mit Jaden Smith und Jackie
Chan. Meine erste Reaktion war: “Nicht schon wieder
ein Remake!” Dann sah ich den Trailer und wurde neugierig. Clash of the Titans ist dieses Jahr, dreidimensional und desaströs, wieder über die Menschheit hergefallen. Remakes – sie sind ein ewiges Streitthema unter
Filmliebhabern. Sind Remakes eine gute oder eine
schlechte Idee? Ich glaube, ob gut oder schlecht, Remakes können wir nicht entrinnen.
Dass es unter der Sonne nichts Neues gibt, ist bekannt.
Doch wenn zwei Autoren innerhalb von zwei Jahrhunderten eine ähnliche Geschichte schreiben, dann fällt das
weniger auf, als wenn King Kong zum dritten Mal innerhalb eines Jahrhunderts auf das Empire State Building
klettert. Das heißt, beim immer noch jungen Medium
Film wird das Remake besonders deutlich und ist deshalb so umstritten, weil viele Zuschauer sich an mindestens eine vorangegangene Fassung noch erinnern können. Übrigens beschleicht mich das Gefühl, dass wir
Menschen mit Filmen oft so verfahren, wie die frisch geschlüpften Gänselein: das Erste, was sie sehen, gilt als
die Mama. Auf uns bezogen bedeutet das, dass die erste Fassung einer Geschichte, die wir sehen, uns als
die einzig Richtige erscheint, als die Echte. Für mich
ist das Dawn of the Dead Remake von 2004 der Goldstandard, obwohl mir bewusst ist, dass George A.
Romero 1978 zum ersten Mal ein Shopping-Center zur
Anti-Zombie-Festung umfunktionierte. Doch sagt jemand
“Dawn of the Dead” sehe ich immer Sarah Polley, Jake
Weber und Ving Rhames vor meinem inneren Auge. Bei
den meisten erfolgreichen Filmen denken sich Hollywood-Produzenten nach einer gewissen Zeit, dass man
damit doch nochmal Geld machen könnte; besonders da
es heute so einfach geworden ist, ältere Filmstoffe visuell zu perfektionieren und dynamischer zu machen.
Dann erfahren wir noch zu unseren Lebzeiten, wie der
“echte” Film neu aufgesetzt wird. Zwangsläufig vergleichen wir mit dem “Original” und weil alle das Gefühl haben, nichts kann an ein (selbst nur gefühltes) Original
herankommen, finden wir am Remake etwas auszusetzen.
Tatsächlich gibt es seit Menschengedenken, seit die

ersten Geschichten sich von den Lippen der Einen in die
Herzen der Anderen schlichen, Remakes. Bei Geschichten herrscht Darwinismus. Jene Erzählungen, die uns
berühren, die Starken, leben weiter. Alle anderen sind
schon sehr früh ausgestorben. Deshalb heißt es, in Hollywood gebe es nur eine begrenzte Anzahl an Scripts.
Selbst Scripts, die als komplett originell gelten, wie
Juno oder Being John Malkovich (Cameron Diaz dazu:
“Es wird gesagt, dass es in Hollywood nur 14 Scripts
gibt. Dies ist Nummer 15”), lassen sich auf bekannte

Szenarien herunterbrechen. Juno ist “Teenager begibt
sich in schwierige Lage, macht das Beste daraus” und
Being John Malkovich ist “durch Magie begibt man sich
in einen anderen Körper, daraus erfolgt allerlei Schabernack”. Das Prinzip Remake entspricht demnach unserer
Natur. Manche Remakes sind so einfallsreich gestaltet,
dass sie besser werden als das Original. The Thomas
Crown Affair mit Pierce Brosnan ist spannender, virtuoser und berührender als der mit Steve McQueen, selbst
wenn nichts das sexuell geladene Schachspiel zwischen Faye Dunaway und McQueen ersetzen kann –
Remake-Regisseur John McTiernan hat es in weiser
Voraussicht dann auch bleiben lassen. Für unsere jüngeren Generationen ist es ebenfalls wichtig und legitim,
das alte, aber kraftvolle Material auf eine Art serviert zu
bekommen, die ihren Sehgewohnheiten und ihrer Welt
mehr entspricht. Wieso sich mit einer steifen, schwarzweißen, räudigen Affenpuppe zufriedengeben, wenn man
den Affenkönig beweglich, in Farbe, realistisch und ausdrucksvoll genießen kann?
Dies soll aber nicht heißen, dass es nicht Fälle gibt, in
denen ein Remake sinnlos, schädlich und einfach nur
schlechter Geschmack ist. Es gibt durchaus Filme, bei
denen die Perfektion im Original bereits erreicht wurde.
Dies trifft erstaunlich oft bei Hitchcock-Filmen zu.
Psycho, Hitchcocks bekanntester Film, wurde nicht nur
neu verfilmt, sondern auch noch mit Prequels und
Sequels versehen. Die Neuverfilmung wurde von keinem
geringeren als Gus Van Sant gedreht, hatte jedoch,
trotz Farbe und kopierter Kameraeinstellungen und
Schnitte, kaum Erfolg. Hätte Van Sant es besser oder
auch nur genauso gut wie Hitchcock gemacht, hätte
sich das an der Kinokasse bemerkbar machen müssen.
Dem war nicht so, also hat es Hitchcock so gut gemacht, wie es nur ging. Mehr oder anders funktioniert
nicht. Nun soll bis 2013 ein Remake von The Birds gedreht werden. Wieso? Naomi Watts wird in diesem Film
Tippi Hedren nie das Wasser reichen können. Oder können Sie sich Naomi “Die Mit Dem Ich-Heul-Gleich-UndBin-In-Panik-Blick” Watts als die eingebildete, gewiefte
und dann einfühlsame Melanie Daniels vorstellen? Ich
kann es nicht. The Birds ist perfekt, so wie er ist. Er
spielt in einer bestimmten Ära und ist dennoch zeitlos.
Sieht man ihn heute, sind der Suspense, die schleichende Angst, die Panik bringenden Vögel und die zurückhaltende Liebesgeschichte immer noch so wir-

kungsvoll wie im Erscheinungsjahr 1963. Diesem Film
wird ein Remake nur schaden, denn es ist unmöglich,
einen Hitchcock, besonders diesen Hitchcock, zu reproduzieren, geschweige denn zu verbessern. Was ist von
einem Remake zu erwarten? Gigantische, computergenerierte Schwärme, Splatter-Sequenzen (ich bezweifele stark, dass die Macher darauf verzichten werden, das
Auspicken von Augen mehrmals und genüsslich in Detail zu zeigen), rasantere Kamerafahrten, schnellere
Schnitte. Ich garantiere Ihnen, dass von der ursprünglichen Eleganz, der notwendigen Langsamkeit und Verhaltenheit nichts übrig bleiben wird. Doch gerade diese
Eigenschaften haben The Birds erst zum Kultfilm gemacht. Auch das diesjährige Remake von Clash of the
Titans hätte man sich sparen können. Dieser Film beweist, dass Aussehen nicht alles ist. Inhalt und schauspielerisches Können sind der Kern einer jeden Geschichte. Fehlt der, können auch tausende von CGI-Effekten die Suppe nicht mehr retten. Wenn ich mich zwischen einer spannend erzählten Geschichte mit Plastikdinosauriern und einer langweiligen, schlecht gespielten
mit CGI-Monstern entscheiden muss, dann her mit den
kultigen Spielzeug-Dinos!
Remakes – das ewige Streitthema. Wie jeder Film sind
sie mal herrlich, mal grässlich, mal fehl am Platz. Bei
jedem Remake sollten sich die Zuständigen ernsthaft
fragen, ob es nicht besser wäre, dem Motto “leave good
enough alone” zu folgen. Es ist nicht rühmlich, eine
gute Geschichte schlechter zu machen und dadurch das
Original mit in den Dreck zu ziehen. Finanziell geht das
meistens sowieso nicht auf. Eins ist aber sicher: Remakes wird es immer geben. Über ihre Daseinsberechtigung zu streiten, ist müßig.

Wie der Robin zum Hood wurde
Meine heutige Lektion: nicht nur beim
Fernsehen kann man einschlafen...

Die zwanziger Jahre in England: bei den
Whittakers herrscht pure Aufregung,
denn der Vorzeigesohn jener etablierten
und vermeintlich reichen englischen
Familie hat Hals über Kopf in Frankreich eine Amerikanerin geheiratet. Und
eine Rennfahrerin dazu! Als das frisch
getraute Paar auf Besuch in das große
Anwesen der Whittakers kommt, bringt
die kesse Amerikanerin den steifen
Engländern bei, was es heisst zu leben.
Doch das missfällt ihrer Schwiegermutter sehr... Nach dem Bühnenstück von
Noel Coward inszenierte, tiefsinnige
und geistreiche Komödie mit exzellenter Besetzung und stimmigem Ambiente. Ein Muss für England-Fans und
Freunde feinen Humors.
Bogenschütze Robin, bei König Richard Löwenherz wegen einer Schlägerei in Ungnade gefallen, nutzt die Gelegenheit zu fliehen, als der König bei
einer Schlacht in Frankreich fällt. Mit
ein paar Freunden kehrt Robin heimlich
nach England zurück, wo er in
Nottingham Unterschlupf bei Walter
Loxley findet, dessen Sohn im Krieg
getötet wurde. Schon bald findet er an
dessen Tochter Marion Gefallen. Doch
Verrat und Ungerechtigkeit droht England zu zerstören... Eigentlich ist der
Titel des Films etwas irreführend. Denn
hier geht es ausschließlich um die Geschichte des Robin Longstride, lange
bevor er zum Untergrundkämpfer Robin
Hood avancierte. Vermutlich ist es
auch genau das, was Ridley Scotts Film
so uninteressant macht. Statt des wakkeren Helden in Strumpfhosen inszeniert Scott hier mal wieder ein
Schlachtengemälde ums andere. Die
Charaktere – wenn auch historisch verbürgt – schrumpfen auf Stereotypen,
deren Handlungsweisen vollkommen
ohne Überraschungsmomente versehen
sind und dadurch langweilig wirken.
Mit etwas Glück bleibt uns eine Fortsetzung dieses überlangen Langweilers
erspart.

Als sie nach ihrem herumstreunenden
Hund Ausschau hält, findet Schaustellerin Patti ein zweijähriges Mädchen,
das von ihrer Mutter ausgesetzt wurde.
Gegen den Willen ihres Lebensgefährten nimmt sie die Kleine in der
Wohnwagensiedlung auf. Schon
schnell haben alle das kleine Mädchen
in ihr Herz geschlossen... Im Stil einer
Doku-Soap erzähltes Stück Kino, das
ganz ohne Filmmusik auskommt und
sich voll und ganz auf die authentischen Darsteller verlässt. Fraglich
bleibt allerdings, ob sich für derlei
sparsame Kost ein Publikum finden
wird.

Der Mann mit Strickpulli, Schlapphut
und Messerhandschuhen aus den
achtziger Jahren ist wieder zurück! Das
Remake des ersten Teil der überaus
erfolgreichen Horrorserie über Freddy
Krueger, der Teenagern im Traum erscheint und auch dort ermordet, hält
sich weitgehend an das Original von
Wes Craven. Es wurden sogar bestimmte Kameraeinstellungen übernommen
und auch die Filmmusik von Charles
Bernstein erklingt aufs Neue. Tricktechnisch, optisch (Freddy mordet jetzt
erstmals in CinemaScope) und akustisch (gegenüber altbackenem MonoSound wird jetzt in ansprechendem 5.1Mix erschreckt) hat der Film ein
Upgrade erfahren und dürfte insbesondere denjenigen gefallen, die das Original nie gesehen haben.

die ich vor zwei Jahren auf dem
Fantasy Filmfest bei einem Filmquiz
gewonnen hatte, durfte endlich das
Innere meines DVD-Players sehen! Das
Resultat war aber eher enttäuschend.
Wie so oft in billigen Genre-Produktionen wartet das Drehbuch mit sehr vielen Ungereimtheiten auf und verleidet
dem Betrachter den unbeschwerten
Splatter-Genuss. Davon ist in
SCHLACHTNACHT aber eine ganz
große Portion vorhanden, weswegen
mir die Freigabe ab 16 Jahren als etwas
hanebüchen erscheint. Ein 18er-Rating
wäre hier eher angebracht. Als besonders störend empfand ich in diesem
Film die Wackelkamera – das war einfach zuviel des Guten. Und was den
Cast angeht: da gibt es immerhin wenigstens einen richtigen Schauspieler:
den Bergwerksführer. Alle anderen Darsteller stecken vermutlich noch mitten
in der Schauspielausbildung – wenn
überhaupt.

Einmal Persien und zurück
Die vom Verleih für heute versprochenen “strengsten Zutrittskontrollen”
haben sich als heisse Luft erwiesen.
Der Film leider auch.
PRINCE OF PERSIA – DER SAND
DER ZEIT (1:2.35, 2k Digital, PCM 5.1)

Persien in der Antike: die drei Söhne
des Königs belagern die heilige Stadt
Alamut, weil dort angeblich Waffen für
einen Aufstand gegen den König geschmiedet werden. Zu spät erst erkennt
Prinz Dastan, dass es sich um ein abgekartetes Spiel handelt. Zusammen mit
Prinzessin Tamina muss er vor den Häschern des Königs fliehen. Noch weiß
er nicht um die Zauberkräfte jenes Dolches, den er in Alamut als Kriegsbeute
aufgelesen hat... Als ob wir nicht
schon genügend Spieleverfilmungen
auf der Leinwand gesehen hätten,
bringt uns Produzent Jerry Bruckheimer
die neueste Variante eines erfolgreichen Games in die Kinos. Hier wird orientalischer Mythos gepaart mit Indiana
Jones Action, ohne das es auch nur
halbwegs funktionieren würde. Die sich
anbahnende Liebschaft zwischen
Dastan und Tamina wird nur halbherzig
inszeniert – vermutlich, weil wir Kinogänger solch angedroschene Geschichten zur Genüge kennen und uns das
damit erst gar nicht mehr erklärt werden
muss. Und Jake Gyllenhaal in der Rolle
des Draufgängers Dastan wirkt irgendwie fehlbesetzt. Der einzige Pluspunkt
bei diesem Brachialkino: es gibt mehr
Stunts als visuelle Effekte. Doch das
rettet das Filmchen auch nicht mehr.

Sharma, Vinay Pathak
Als ihr Verlobter unmittelbar vor der
Hochzeit bei einem Unfall ums Leben
kommt, muss die junge Taani auf dem
Sterbebett ihres Vaters versprechen,
den vollkommen unscheinbaren
Surinder zu ehelichen. Surinder, der
sich Hals über Kopf in die wunderschöne Frau verliebt hat, tut alles, um
deren Liebe zu gewinnen. So schlüpft
er in die Rolle des Draufgängers Raj
Kapoor... In seiner Doppelrolle darf
Indiens Superstar Shah Rukh Khan
beweisen, dass er nicht nur gut tanzen,
sondern auch gut schauspielern kann.
Mit Bravour (und viel Selbstironie)
meistert er die beiden komplett konträren Rollen. Ihm zur Seite steht Anushka
Sharma, eine Newcomerin, von der man
ganz sicher noch viel sehen und hören
wird. Auch bildkompositorisch wie
auch akustisch lässt dieses BollywoodSpektakel keine Wünsche offen und
fasziniert natürlich ganz speziell in den
perfekt choreographierten und
gestylten Song & Dance Sequenzen,
von denen mir persönlich die Liebeserklärung an das indische Kino am besten gefallen hat. Und nicht nur, weil
es darin Cameo-Appearences berühmter Bollywood-Aktricen wie Rani
Muherjee oder Preity Zinta gibt. Da ich
den Film bislang nur von DVD kannte,
war es eine echte Wohltat, ihn jetzt auf
der großen Leinwand zu sehen. Das
allerdings birgt extreme Suchtgefahr!

Der Gute-Laune-Mittwochabend-Film
Einmal im Monat trifft sich die Stuttgarter Bollywood-Fangemeinde im besten Kino der Stadt, um sich ungestört
dem Kino großer Gefühle und explodierender Farben hinzugeben. Jetzt war es
wieder soweit.

„Nosferatu“ is one of gothic horror, sensuality and ultimately
death. Unlike Bram Stoker’s „Dracula“, the events in the
movie take place, not in London, but in Bremen, Germany
during the 1830’s. We are lucky to have „Nosferatu“. All
copies were ordered destroyed in 1923. „Nosferatu“ was
deemed the product of plagiarism an unlicensed version of
Bram Stoker’s „Dracula“. Stoker’s widow sued the movie
producers until they were out of business and the court
ordered all copies of the film to be destroyed. Fortunately for
us, copies hidden away in the dark recesses of cinemathques
and it is from these reels that we can see what is considered
the world’s first horror film. The story is familiar, however the
style and characters are rooted in German Expressionism.
Nosferatu was one of a handful of films that expanded the
language of a cinema in ways that had not been explored and
resonate influentially to the movies of today.

Stepping Up with Seasun Zieger is a fantastic new step
workout with very creative combinations that will challenge
all the steppers who like to move continuously on and around
the step without stopping. Enjoy Seasun’s fun turns, pivots
