Ryan McDaniel
Our New Worship Leader/Praise Band Director
Ryan McDaniel grew up going to church at Lakewood UMC north of
Houston. It was there that God first began to develop his heart and talents
as a worship leader. Ryan went on to study and lead worship while at the
University of Texas at Austin. In his senior year, he met his wife Jessica
who he married in July 2006.
Their shared passion to see others experience the love of Christ and be healed led Ryan and
Jessica to move to Colorado to study at Denver Seminary. There Ryan had the opportunity to lead
at a church celebrating its centennial year of existence as well as a small church plant just getting
started. In the Spring of 2009 they each received their M.A.'s in Community Counseling. Their love
of Texas and family led them back to Austin where they had their daughter Melody on December
22, 2010.
Ryan, now a licensed professional counselor, currently works at Austin Travis County Integral Care
where he counsels and supervises a team of specialists in a community based practice. His wife
Jessica works at the Austin Stone Counseling Center where she does both individual, premarital,
and martial counseling.
Through the years God has continued to develop Ryan as a worshiper and a worship leader. Ryan
has a passion for worshiping God and seeing others proclaim
his name through song.
His favorite verse is Romans 12:1, "I appeal to you therefore,
brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a
living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your
spiritual worship."
NOTE:: Due to a recent difficulty we had with publishing someone's name and medical condition in the newsletter and
thereby making that information available on the web, we have decided to only include in the newsletter the names of
those in need of prayer. We trust that God already knows the specifics of each need. Other solutions to this problem
are being investigated. Thanks for your understanding. Pastor Kathryn

means of communicating with God, yet most Christians join the church
and only learn how to pray by listening to others. If they are ever called
on to pray in public, it becomes a real test of faith for most people. After all, isn't this better left in the
hands of the "professionals"? This short course on public prayer will help you grow in confidence
and skill, while encouraging a deeper and more vital prayer life in your personal life.
Leading, Caring, Communicating
These three words found in the lay speaking logo describe the ministry of Lay Speakers as the
United Methodist Church engages the world of the twenty-first century. The Lay Speaking program
prepares candidates for certification within the United Methodist Church to perform sermons and
work as an advocate for Jesus Christ. The Austin District Lay Speaking Committee offers classes to
train laypersons to preach and to serve in their own church and in other churches.
To become a Local Church Lay Speaker, you must complete the Basic Lay Speaking Course.
You must also complete an Annual Report and submit it to your Charge Conference. They must
vote to approve your application. As a Local Church Lay Speaker, you are authorized to preach, if
asked by your pastor, at your own church.
To become a Certified Lay Speaker, you must also complete one of the many Advanced Lay
Speaker Courses. As such, by filing an Annual Report and being approved annually by your
Charge Conference, you are authorized to preach at any United Methodist Church at which you may
be asked. You must take at least one Advanced Class every three years to maintain your Certified
Lay Speaker status.
The Austin District Lay Speaking Committee offers a Basic Class every spring and one of the Advanced Classes every
fall. The Southwest Texas Conference offers an Advanced Class is Kerrville in early March each year. You may take an
Advanced Class before taking the Basic Class to satisfy the training requirements for being a Certified Lay
Speaker. There are several possible topics for advanced classes.

FOOD PANTRY NEWS
History of the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB)
In 1981, a small group of concerned Austinites from the United Urban Council
(the predecessor of today' Interfaith Action of Central Texas (iACT)) and
individuals from several community organizations formed the Capital Area Food
Bank of Texas, Inc. They recognized the need for emergency food assistance, as
well as the availability of surplus food from various food companies and grocery
stores that might otherwise go to waste.
In March 1982, CAFB was incorporated under the Texas Non-Profit Corporation
Act, and in 1983 CAFB became a certified member of Feeding America. The
Capital Area Food Bank of Texas is a tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization.
CAFB was the second food bank in Texas; the first opened in San Antonio in
1979. One month after CAFB opened, a third Texas food bank opened in Dallas.
In CAFB's first year (1982), about 330,000 pounds of food were provided.
In 2006, CAFB added an important public role – leader and public advocate for
hungry Central Texans. CAFB supports anti-hunger local, state and federal
legislation, and provides leadership to mobilize community action.
Food and grocery products provided by CAFB go to human and social service
agencies. These Partner Agencies provide hot meals served on-site or groceries
to Central Texans in need.

Attention Ladies
Get looking in your jewelry boxes! The Servant Angels are asking you all to donate
any costume jewelry you no longer wear for
our Pfamily Pfall Pfestival booth.
You can drop it off in the ‘workroom’ in the
administration building, just put the jewelry
in a Ziploc baggie and place in the box
marked Angels Jewelry Donations. Then in
October stop by our booth and see if you
see anything ‘new’ catches your eye.
Thank you!

Maybe it’s just what you’ve been looking for.
Our mirrors reflect the outward appearance;
God’s mirror reveals the inward condition.
Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
— 1 Samuel 16:7
During the first few hours of their 30th college reunion, Mary Schmich and her
friends talked mostly about how old their classmates looked. But as the event progressed, their focus began to change. Later, in her Chicago Tribune column, Mary
wrote: “Once you get used to the fact that time has robbed every single one of you of
something—or added it in the wrong places . . . you stop thinking about looks [and]
start talking about life.”
So much of our time and attention are devoted to physical appearance that it’s easy
to consider it the most important aspect of our lives. But the Bible reminds us that
God wants us to see ourselves and others differently.
When the Lord sent Samuel to anoint a new king over Israel (1 Samuel 16:1), God
reminded him to look deeper than physical characteristics: “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature . . . . For the Lord does not see as man sees; for
man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (v.7).
God’s Word has some harsh condemnation for those who show favoritism based on
appearances:
My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism. Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and
fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. If you show
special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, "Here's a good
seat for you," but say to the poor man, "You stand there" or "Sit on the floor
by my feet," have you not discriminated among yourselves and become
judges with evil thoughts? — James 2:1-4
When we begin to see people through God’s eyes, our focus will change from looks
to life.
-- David C. McCasland
As printed in Our Daily Bread Devotionals
God looks not at the outward form
But what is in the heart;
The beauty He is pleased to see,
His Spirit can impart. —Hess
