The Lamplighter
Perrysville United Methodist Church
Millissa Hartson, Pastor
November 2013
He made the night a little
brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago
His snowy hair was so much
whiter
Beneath the candle glow
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago
You'd hear the patter of his feet
As he came toddling down the
street
His smile would cheer a lonely
heart you see
If there were sweethearts in the
park
He'd pass a lamp and leave it
dark
Remembering the days that used
to be
For he recalled when things were
new
He loved someone who loved
him too
Who walks with him alone in
memories
He made the night a little
brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago
His snowy hair was so much
whiter
Beneath the candle glow
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago
Now if you look up in the sky
You'll understand the reason why
The little stars at night are all
aglow
He turns them on when night is
near
He turns them off when dawn is
here
The little man we left so long ago
He made the night a little
brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter of long, long
ago

God Doesn’t Call the Equipped, He Equips the Called
Have you felt God calling you to use
your teaching and leadership skills
within your church? This is the season
within the church when the Lay
Leadership
Committee
prayerful
identifies gifts and talents among the
congregation.
Have you been
approached?
Are you prayerfully
considering the request? Thoughtful
contemplation may center around
God calling you from your comfort
zone into active service. Romans 12: 1
-2 from the Message states: “So
here’s what I want you to do, God
helping you: Take your everyday,
ordinary life—your sleeping, eating,
going-to-work, and walking-around
life—and place it before God as an
offering. Embracing what God does
for you is the best thing you can do for
him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to
your culture that you fit into it without
even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on
God. You’ll be changed from the inside out.
Readily recognize what he wants from you,
and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture
around you, always dragging you down to
its level of immaturity, God brings the best
out of you, develops well-formed maturity in
you.” Remember, God doesn’t call the
equipped, He equips the called.
Secondly, if your calling involves service to
the larger community, then the invitation to
explore Lay Servant/Lay Speaking Ministries
is a first step from the local congregation to
the district-at-large. Trainings are provided
on an annual basis to provide you with the
development of your skills for whatever
ministry God may be leading you toward. In
March of 2014, trainings will be held at
Millersburg UMC for basic and certified lay
servant/lay
speakers.
The
Mission
Statement of the UMC says it best: “The
mission of the Church is to make disciples of
Jesus Christ for the transformation of
the world.” Joining the ranks with
likeminded lay leaders from the district may be just the first step for you
to begin to make disciples of Jesus
Christ for the transformation of the
world.
If your passion is to serve Christ then
contact Janet Boyd, the Three Rivers
District Director of Lay Servant Ministries, to discuss the options available
to you for active service in the ministry of the laity. Janet can be reach at
740-504-2238 or email her at missionjeb2003yahoo.com. Follow us on
our Facebook page Lay servant Ministries of EOC and Three Rivers District.

lives and transform us in the process.
Looking to the future, there are many reasons to praise God as we continue to worship, grow and serve in the love of Christ here in Perrysville.
Thanksgiving is just around the corner and it is so much more that a big
meal with family and friends. It is a time to reflect on and to be thankful
for all of the good things we have been received from our Lord and Savior. Even with all of the uncertainty and turmoil in the world, we have so
much to be thankful for. Instead of lamenting what you feel is lacking in
your life why not begin each new day by developing an attitude of gratitude. Friends, if we have enough to eat, a place to live, a way to get
around, people who care about us, people we care about than we are truly
blessed and very wealthy. Make everyday a day of Thanksgiving!
I am thankful for being able to celebrate another thanksgiving with the
Perrysville Church family. Memories of the past nine years will be with
me forever and I am looking forward to creating many more with my brothers and sisters in Christ.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Pastor Millissa
Let’s talk turkey!
Thanksgiving is the first holiday established in the United States.
Which of the founding fathers suggested
the turkey be the American national bird?
George Washington John Adams Benjamin Franklin John Hancock
Answer: Benjamin Franklin he thought the
turkey although “vain and silly” was a better choice than the bald eagle. Which he
felt was a “coward” Thomas Jefferson
wanted the symbol to be a dove.
Thanks to John Adams the national symbol/bird is the eagle.
Why should we never talk like a turkey?
Because it’s bad to use fowl language!
What did
the American Indian
call the
Pilgrim
with a
bucket over
his head?
Paleface.
What’s the
key to a
great
Thanksgiving?
A tur-key!
What would you get if you crossed a famous Giant with Indian corn?
Willie Maize
MIDWEST Mission Trip August 5-9, 2013
Four first timers joined 17 seasoned volunteers on their annual pilgrim to the Midwest Mission Distribution Center (MMDC). The team represented five churches:
Galion Christ UMC, Fredericktown UMC, Cardington First UMC, Salem UMC,
Trinity UMC-Mt Gilead, and Perrysville UMC, all traveling to Chatham ILL. They
took with them six hundred plus pounds of book bags, sewing machines, school
supplies, hospital gowns, receiving blankets, diapers, boys/girls shorts and tops,
bicycle, treadle sewing machine and flood buckets.
The group did a variety of activities. There were a variety of kits counted, packed
and readied for shipment. They emptied, quality checked and repacked cleaning
buckets, built desks for an inner city school in Springfield, painted signs for
MMDC, mowed grass, cut patterns, cut and sewed school bags, Haitian school uniforms/hospital gowns/outfits for the children in the orphanage. We worshiped,
laughed, ate great meals (prepared by none other than our Pastor Millissa), ate icecream, went sightseeing and felt blessed for the work we did. On Friday our last
assignment for MMDC was to pray a blessing a shipment that was ready to be sent
out of the country to various parts of the world. We laid our hands on the shipment
praying for safe delivery, praying for those individuals delivering/distributing, and
those receiving. This was truly the high point of the week for many of us.
On April 27, 2014 Mark Freeman, Warehouse Supervisor for MMDC and his wife
Pat will be guest of Trinity UMC in Mt Gilead for United Methodist Women Sunday. They are inviting others to join them in worship at 8:30 or 10:30 to hear about
the destinations Midwest Mission Distribution sends the items that the teams from
all over America work on.
Pastor Millissa has a DVD of this year’s team in action if anyone has an interest in
participating on a mission team.
