Our History
1864
In 1864, the German Methodist Church founded a home in
Warrenton, MO for orphan children; specifically the orphans of
deceased soldiers.
4
1865
Mr. William H. Markham financed the first of the Methodist
Children’s homes in Saint Louis in 1865. Rev. W. W. Prottsman
and his wife established the home to care for children who were
torn from their families by disease and disaster of the Civil War.
1867
The Methodist Orphan Home Association was incorporated
and Mr. William H. Markham was elected the first President of
the Association of Trustees.
1870
The first Methodist Orphan Home was constructed at
3533 Laclede with the occupancy of 35 children.
5
1884
After operating under the name of Western Orphan Asylum and Educational Institute,
the Warrenton Home changed its name to Central Wesleyan Orphan Home.
1876-1914
Mrs. John J. O’Fallon began an
unprecedented service record of 38
years with the Methodist Orphan Home
Association as President of the Board of
Lady Managers.
6
1896
Mr. Samuel Cupples presented a new
building to Methodist Orphan Home
at 4385 Maryland Avenue in memory
of his wife, Mrs. Martha Kells
Cupples. She was an active member
of the Board of Directresses.
7
1909

Deaconesses from the Epworth Evangelistic
Institute were ministering in Saint Louis and
found two girls needing medical care and
protection. They appealed to the St. Louis
Juvenile Court for permission to take care
1910
of the girls and from this came the vision of
their leader, Miss Horton, for opening a home After Mrs. Emil Willbrandt visited the
Methodist Episcopal Emergency Home,
to care for other girls.
she organized to prove to the courts
the home was qualified to care for girls.
She developed a managerial board and
changed the name to Methodist Episcopal
Home for Girls and Miss Ida Bentley was
hired as the matron of the home.
1913
Improvements led to the incorporation of the
Methodist Episcopal Home for Girls under the
Saint Louis Deaconess Association. This same
year, they moved to a house at 4310 Morgan
Street that had a capacity of 26 girls.
??????? ASK DIANNE
1913-1927
The Methodist Orphan Home opened a new building for boys at
Bonhomme Avenue and continued to run the home on Maryland Avenue.
The average number served in the two institutions was 100 children.
1915
The Methodist Episcopal Home for Girls changed its
name to Epworth School for Girls. Miss Ella Stanard,
who became Mrs. Fred Shoemaker after they met
on the first Board and married, was instrumental
in getting the home incorporated into the Woman’s
Home Missionary Society of the Saint Louis
Conference.
9
1919
Epworth School for Girls was received
into full membership of the Woman’s
National Home Missionary Society
of the Methodist Episcopal Church
and their first Woman’s Board of
Managers was organized. That same
year, Epworth graduated its first class
of girls from the eighth grade.
10
1920’s-1930’s
The Central Wesleyan Home reached
its peak occupancy with two modern
cottages that created a home-like
environment.
1922
Epworth School for Girls moved to a
beautiful estate on Elm Avenue with a
capacity of 50 girls. They elected Mrs. Henby
president of the Board of Managers and
became one of the charter agencies of the
St. Louis Community Council and the St.
Louis Community Fund, later known as the
St. Louis Planning Council and the United
Charities of St. Louis and St. Louis County.

League of America. They followed
recommendations to close the boys’ home
in Clayton, and moved younger boys to
their Maryland home.

and established a diagnostic health center known as the
Washington University Dispensary.

that led to the consolidation of the Central
Wesleyan Orphanage and the Methodist
Orphan Home in 1939.
1947
After the merge, the Methodist
Orphan Home moved to a
temporary home on Waterman
Avenue, placing 75 children in
foster care and housing 25 until a
new facility was built.
13

The new Methodist Orphan
Home was completed in 1951
on Jamieson Avenue. It received
national attention for its
innovation as the ‘first apartment
style system.’
14
1953
The Methodist Orphan’s
Home Association legally
changed its name to the
Methodist Children’s Home
of Missouri.

After a community-wide study, Methodist
Orphan’s Home shifted its care from adoption
services to care for children who were
emotionally disturbed.

In the 1960’s, Epworth School for Girls
shifted its focus from home-making and
vocational skills to the individual needs
of troubled girls.

Children’s Home of Missouri was dissolved
and the Board of Trustees and Executive
Board were consolidated.

services, Epworth created Street
Outreach Services to encourage
homeless youth to choose safe
and stable housing.
After thirty years of abuse prevention, Family
Support Network merged with Epworth to
provide in-home therapy to families at risk of
abuse or neglect.
2013

character education program, merged with
