Annual Report 2011-2012 - St Charles Borromeo School
Annual Report 2011-2012 Inspired by Christ, our common vision at St. Charles is to prepare students to be responsible individuals with Catholic values and a lifelong love of learning. In partnership with parents and community, we provide opportunities for intellectual, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual growth within a secure and supportive environment. It gratefully acknowledges gifts received between July 1, 2011, and June 30, 2012. Our donors are important to us! This variation of a quote from Tryon Edwards, an American theologian who wrote in the 1800’s, contains a good deal of wisdom. Today our children live in world awash with information and images. So much so that it is often challenging to find some consistency. Perhaps this overload of information contributes to the withdrawal of so many from participating in our country as voters and in our churches as active members. One of the reasons the Catholic Church is Good News for us is that it presents a powerful, consistent message through its teaching and the images of our religion. Think for a moment of the Christmas crib and the birth of Jesus. The message of Christmas is Good News for all people, and the Christian images of Christmas are touching and powerful. It is the same for Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday. Study after study shows that Catholic schools effectively support parents in their efforts to raise their children as Catholics, committed citizens, and lifelong learners. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, this does not occur, but this does not take away from the fact that Catholic Schools in general and St. Charles in particular accomplish their purpose more often than not. This past year we celebrated Pat Feist’s retirement after his 26th year as our school principal. We are grateful to him for his many years of loving dedicated care to our children. He would be the first to say that he was simply overseeing one small part of the growth and education of all those who came to school here. Parents, teachers, staff, alumni, and parishioners were his partners. Indeed it is the entire parish that makes our parish school so successful. It is our continuing goal. I know that Mr. Dan Hill, our new principal, is dedicated to this. A friend of mine once said, “Past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior.” I believe this is a good rule of thumb and most often will be true. What is true of our school is also true of each child. That’s why it’s so important for young children to develop good habits right from the beginning. It is true with regard to eating, exercising, and studying. It is also true in terms of putting into practice what they are learning about their faith and religion. When children are baptized, parents are reminded that they are the “first and best teachers of the Faith.” By word and example, they are to teach their children to make Love of God their first priority so that they will know how to love their neighbor. Our school exists to assist parents in this role regarding their religion; in helping to educate their children and instilling in them a love for lifelong learning. The most powerful image for our children is the living image of their parents putting into practice the love of God and neighbor. The next most powerful image is that of their teachers both in and out of school and the members of the community in which they grow up. We pray that God will bring to fruition the good work that God has begun with us. God’s Peace, Fr. Michael McDermottDan Hill PastorPrincipal Patrick Feist Principal 1986-2012 On the evening of June 19, 2012 the St. Charles Borromeo community celebrated the many successes of Principal Patrick Feist as he retired from St. Charles Borromeo School. Each year, the Archdiocese of Seattle Catholic Schools Department identifies outstanding seventh grade students who exemplify the identity and excellence of Catholic education in four categories. In addition, the Light of Christ Award is presented to graduating eighth grade students who best exemplify the values we work to instill within all students: knowledge and practice of their faith, active involvement in community service, reflecting Christ as a positive role model to others, being a Christian leader in school, and consistently exhibiting a joyous attitude. St. Charles is proud of our 2011-2012 student leaders. Mr. Feist joined the community in 1986 with his wife, Deb, and two daughters, Laura and Robin. One of his first and most significant decisions was to create an endowment for the school. Today, the St. Charles endowment is at $2.6 million dollars and provides on average $120,000 a year to the school in tuition scholarship funds. Mr. Feist believes in a Catholic education for all. He has worked hard to ensure that no child would be denied a Catholic education at St. Charles due to family finances. He states, “My proudest achievement at St. Charles is in knowing we have had a positive impact in the lives of so many students and families.” 2 Natalie Light of Christ Award Tommy Leadership in Academic Achievement Molly Leadership in Community Building and Service Mallory Leadership in Academic Achievement John Leadership in Community Building and Service Dominique Light of Christ Award Kendall Leadership in Co-Curricular Participation Amanda Leadership in Faith Collin Leadership in Co-Curricular Participation Peter Leadership in Faith Photo by VINCE KOKICH; Student Portraits by Yearwood Studio, Inc. This year’s Fund-a-Need solicitation allowed St. Charles’ families an opportunity to provide for Catholic school children in a small village in Tanzania, Africa. Through generous and loving donations, Sr. Redempta will be able to provide her students with school supplies and give her teachers current resources. Sr. Redempta was an administrative intern with St. Charles Borromeo for the 201112 school year. She became principal at St. Agnes Catholic School in Tanzania, Africa when she returned home in June of 2012. Sr. Redempta came from Tanzania to learn English and study in the United States. She was a college student at St. Martin’s in Lacey before coming to intern at St. Charles. Our school families, faculty, and staff quickly became fond of Sister and wanted to help her students in Tanzania. At the 2012 school auction, a special Fund-a-Need raised funds to enable Sister to ship school supplies back to her school. 12 Roy and Carrie Cupler * Charles and Tracy Cuthbert Louis and Kari Dainty Charles Borromeo Catholic School was founded in 1958 by Father E. F. McCallion, along with the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. The school opened with six sisters teaching 200 students in first through sixth grade. Tremendous growth and development have taken place over the years, demonstrating the parish’s faithful support of quality Catholic education. The school is named for St. Charles Borromeo, who was ordained Archbishop of Milan. Even though he was from a very wealthy family, he insisted on living a simple life helping and educating the poor. He used his fortune to found seminaries, schools, and hospitals believing the future of the Church was rooted in Catholic education and service to others. St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School began small with only one classroom per grade. The school building was enlarged in 1963, doubling the size of each grade. Today the school has two classes per grade level in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Our campus offers a state-of-the-art library, a music room, a computer lab, a full kitchen, and additional classrooms for specialized programs. Technology used throughout the school includes SMART™ Boards, document cameras, LCD projectors, and video-streaming capability, as well as laptops for use in the junior high classrooms. We are preparing our students for the future with an emphasis on 21st century skills. 7112 S. 12th Street, Tacoma, Washington 98465 253.564.5185 www.stcharlesb.org
