PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Warringah Australia Remembers Trust - On Friday 27 May 2016 the Warringah Australia Remembers Trust
conducted its annual Commemorative Service at North Head to mark the night World War ll came to Sydney as
Japanese submarines entered Sydney Harbour. The Hon. Tony Abbott, MP and his office organise the event.
Our Year 12 Hospitality students, with Ms Mills and Ms Halford, contributed enormously to the event in catering
for and serving afternoon tea to the 750 guests, while our School Prefects laid a wreath.
I have had numerous reports, including from Mr Abbott himself, about how excellently our girls presented
themselves, bringing great credit to the school. Our girls were well-mannered, respectful of the occasion, positive,
highly competent and utterly delightful. They should feel very proud of themselves.
School Trivia Night - The school Trivia Night was a truly wonderful night. The parents who came along had great
fun, while supporting the school in its fundraising endeavour. The night raised $11 000 for the education of your
daughters. These funds will contribute to the purchase of new technology for our flexible learning spaces.
It was a great success due to the amazing teamwork of the P&C Executive and other parents who sought
donations from local businesses and organised and ran the night, our MCs, and our local businesses, local
Council members Michael Regan and Jean Hay, the NSW Premier Mike Baird and the Hon. Tony Abbott who
donated and contributed so generously to our school. Mr Abbott, Mr Baird, Mr Regan and Ms Hay all donated
prizes to the auctions, raising $1 500, with Mr Abbott’s raising $750 for the school. Mr Abbott’s supportive
attendance on the night was appreciated.

School Movie Night - The P&C has organised a movie night for the school and its families at Warriewood. It is
the Australian Premiere of Me Before You on Wednesday 15 June, the day before the movie’s release. Come
along with your daughter for a good night and support your school. There is a flyer with details later in the
newsletter.
National Reconciliation Week 27 May – 3 Jun - Each year National Reconciliation Week celebrates the rich
culture and history of indigenous Australians. It is the ideal time for everyone to join the reconciliation conversation
and to think about how we can help turn around the disadvantage experienced by many Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander people.
The theme for National Reconciliation Week is ‘our History, our Story, Our Future”; which asks all Australians to
reflect on our national identity, and the place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, cultures and rights in
our nation’s story.
It is also a time to reflect on the apology to the Stolen Generations by the Australian Parliament on 13 February
2008, a powerful and memorable moment in the nation’s history. Saying sorry inspired Australians to believe we
really can build the kind of respectful relationships needed for positive, long term outcomes. A group of our Biala
students and girls studying Aboriginal Studies attended the Manly Warringah Sorry Day Commemoration and
were actively involved in the ceremony.
School Contributions for Years 7 – 12 - Parents, earlier this term, received invoices for any payments due.
These indicate the payments that are applicable to all students, as well as the costs involved in studying elective
subjects in Years 9 -12.
We really appreciate that so many parents have already made their payments. It allows us to purchase teaching
and learning resources for use for the whole year. Parents, please realise that the only thing we do with your
financial contribution to your children’s learning is spend it on their learning.

Student Responsibility - Please make your daughter responsible for her own belongings and commitments,
including bringing her lunch and homework. This year there has been a notable increase in parents dropping off
items to the school office for their daughter to pick up, and this is to stop. Our girls need to take responsibility for
themselves and the office staff cannot be constantly interrupted dealing with forgotten items or interrupt classes.
Fundraising - Our students, often led by the Prefects, do enormous amounts of fundraising for charity
organisations throughout the year. One of the values we treasure at Mackellar is that of appreciating what you
have, giving back and giving to the community in a selfless manner.
There is also regular fundraising carried out by students because they have been selected for School state or
national sports teams, where large expenses have to be met to compete overseas.
However, the school cannot manage any further fundraising for individuals. We cannot accommodate families,
parents or students wanting to fundraise at school for any out-of-school endeavour or to lessen the financial
commitment of parents for their daughter’s co-curricula activities.
NSW Health Survey of adolescents - In late 2014 Mackellar was part of the NSW Health extensive survey on
the health and behaviours of 12-17 year olds in NSW. Because we were part of the sampling, I have received the
results of the survey. The main findings of statewide patterns can be summarised as:
Smoking continues to decline among students – rates have dropped from 27% in 1984 to 7% in 2014
21% of students are overweight or obese ; 78% eat adequate daily fruit; 10% eat adequate daily vegetables; 21%
engage in adequate levels of physical activity
More students are abstaining from alcohol – 17% had never had alcohol in 2005, compared to 35% in 2014.
New WWCC facts for parents hiring private tutors - There are new arrangements for parents or carers who
engage the services of a private tutor or coach and have an important role to play in helping to keep their children
safe.
From 1 April 2016 adults who provide private tuition or coaching services to children need to obtain a new
Working With Children Check (WWCC).
Principals should ensure that parents, carers and P&C Associations are made aware of these new arrangements.

Trivia Night 2016
Last Saturday night saw another very successful Trivia night organised by your P&C, with 200 in attendance
(including the Hon.Tony Abbott enjoying Quiz Master Trevor’s skills in putting together 3 rounds of diverse questions interspersed with games. There were also raffles and silent and live auctions. A French Provincial style dining
table donated by Best Price Furniture, Balgowlah sold for $1,100 , a canapé party donated by Catering Northern
Beaches (Vicky Harris) was bought for $1,000 and spirited bidding for 2 premier Coldplay concert tickets donated
by Warner Music brought in $750. A special thanks must go to the Hon Tony Abbott (Member for Warringah), the
Hon Mike Baird (NSW Premier and Member for Manly), Jean Hay and Michael Regan of the Northern Beaches
Council for their personalised live auction donations that raised $1,500.There was also a Parliamentary wine and
cheese set donated by Greg Donnelly MLC for the Northern Beaches and signed books by local award winning
authors Jo Riccioni (The Italians at Cleat’s Corner Store) and Tim Elliott (Farewell to the Father).
Please remember to support the local businesses (list below) who have contributed to supporting your daughters’
school.
So why did we do it? To support and enhance our daughters' education. Overall $11,000 was raised. So thanks
to all who came along and supported this event. If you didn’t make it this time, think about it for the next Trivia
Night, and in the meantime ….
The next event P&C event is Movie Night for the Australian Premier of “Me Before You” on Wednesday 15 June at
Warriewood Cinema. Plan to be there (see separate article in the Newsletter for more information).

W@M REPORT - 3 JUNE 2016
The prefects would like to thank everyone who participated in the Pastoral Care coin line challenge, a
competition between year groups to create the longest line of coins to raise money for Bear Cottage. Thanks to
your enthusiasm and motivation to support those in need, we managed to raise over $1000 for sick and
terminally ill children.
As nominations for the 2016-2017 prefects begin, we are humbled to say that we can look back upon our time as
leaders with pride and honour. One of our biggest achievements was organising our Year 11 charity breakfast for
the Mahbobah’s Promise Foundation, raising over $1300 for girls education in Afghanistan. Another proud
moment for us was running Multicultural Day, which brought together the school community in celebration of the
diverse cultures at Mackellar, while raising $5000 for the Syrian Refugee Crisis. We recently established an
Environmental Club, which will hopefully continue successfully after we are gone as our legacy to the school.
Being prefects has taught us the value in teamwork, cooperation and negotiation. Most importantly, we learned
the value in time management and the importance of not leaving things to the last minute, a skill which will
hopefully translate across to our school work and help us through the HSC.
Our journey is not yet over, and we are currently organising the annual Bally Macka dance, which we are
incredibly excited about. We wish all the best to the Year 11s who are currently applying to become prefect. We
can assure you that this will be a year you will not be quick to forget.

EMERGENCY + SMARTPHONE APP
The NSW Police Force, as part of Australia’s Triple Zero Awareness Working Group, has assisted to develop the
smartphone app Emergency+ for iOS and Android devices.
With 65% of calls to Triple Zero (000) made from mobile phones, often callers cannot provide emergency operators with their exact location. The Emergency+ app overcomes this problem by using the caller’s smartphone’s
GPS functionality to provide latitude and longitude/GPS coordinates.
Emergency+ also provides users with information about who to call in various non-emergency situations:

SORRY DAY COMMEMORATION On Sunday 29th May the Manly Warringah Aboriginal Support Group held a Sorry Day Commemoration event at
Bilarong Reserve as a part of the annual Guringai Festival. A number of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students
from Mackellar attended the event which included a commemoration walk, didgeridoo music, boomerang
painting, and men’s and women’s traditional dancing and singing.
Three of our students were asked to contribute to the event. Ashlinn (Year 10) read poetry from Aunty Nancy
Wood's book "Nobody's Child". As part of Ashlinn’s Preliminary Aboriginal Studies Major Work, she spoke with
Aunty Nancy about her experiences as a part of the Stolen Generations.
Ella and Erin (Year 12) were asked to give an address about how they see Aboriginal people and history. Ella
and Erin, along with other members of their Aboriginal Studies class, have developed an excellent relationship
with their local community over the last two years through the consultation they have undertaken for the
Aboriginal Studies HSC Major Project. Their speech was moving and appreciated by everyone in attendance.
The event was fantastic and reflected the wonderful bond the school has with our local Aboriginal community.

MUSIC NEWS BANDS AT THE SYDNEY EISTEDDFOD - By the printing of this newsletter the Concert Band and
Performance Band will have performed at the Sydney Eisteddfod at The Concourse,
Chatswood. This is the first time for many years that we have entered this Eisteddfod.
Approximate session times:

Performance Band – Tuesday May 31st, 3pm Premier Secondary

Concert Band– Wednesday June 1st, 1pm Intermediate Secondary

NORTHERN BEACHES INSTRUMENTAL FESTIVAL - The Performance and Concert Bands will be performing in the
Northern Beaches Festival this year along will almost every other school on the Northern Beaches. The event
goes over several days and is held at Pittwater High School. The Mackellar bands will be performing on Friday
17th June. This festival is about celebrating music and hearing local bands. Performances are broken up into
sessions where the performers in each session are required to be in the audience and listen to others in that
session. Each session goes for approximately 80 minutes.



Concert Band - Session 1: 5:00pm – 6:35pm, 17th June
Performance Band - Session 2: 6:45pm – 8:30pm, 17th June
The Stage Band will be performing in this festival later in Term 3 on 14th August
MUSIC NIGHT TERM 2 WEEK 7 MONDAY 6TH JUNE - 7PM PERFORMANCE SPACE All ensembles will be performing along with solo items from Year 11 and 12 music class students. The Year 11
Entertainment class will be doing sound and lighting. Refreshments will be served from the kiosk from 6:30pm.
Students are to arrive at 6:30pm. It would be appreciated for parents to stay for the whole evening and not leave
in the middle of performances. The evening will finish at approximately 8:45pm.
MUSICAL – “HAIRSPRAY” The Mackellar Musical is coming up in Week 9 this term. Performance dates for evening performances are:

The school athletics carnival will be held on FRIDAY 10th June 2016 at the Sydney Academy of Sport, Narrabeen.
Girls need to bring a hat, sunscreen, a water bottle, lunch, and warm sports clothes in house colours. Girls may
wear PE uniform and joggers. Canteen facilities at the venue are available. Parents are most welcome to attend.
This carnival will be on rain, hail or shine as the Zone carnival is on Tuesday 28th June at Sydney Olympic
Park (just for this year) and we have no other track booking.
THIS IS A REGULAR SCHOOL DAY AND SO ATTENDANCE IS COMPULSORY as for any other day. We do encourage girls to
participate in as many events as possible, as it ensures a fun day and points for your house.
TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS - One bus will leave school at 8.00am for all girls wishing to participate in the 1500
metres and HURDLES events. We would appreciate girls letting us know if they will be catching this earlier bus.
Everyone else will have normal roll call at school at 8.42 am and then buses will take the girls to Narrabeen at
9am. If your daughter lives near to Narrabeen and wants to go straight to the carnival, she must make sure she
goes to the recording room to have her name marked off by 9.20am.
There will be roll call before the buses leave the venue in the afternoon at 2pm. If you wish to take your
daughter home directly from the venue, it would assist greatly if you were able to wait until after this roll call. Any
girl who needs to leave during the day for an appointment etc must report to the announcer with a note or a parent
to have their name marked off.

As Ski Camp approaches there are a number of things to start preparing.
Second payment of $350 should now have been paid.
The on-line medical form should also have been completed.
The final payment is due by the 10th June. Below is the medical form link.
You will need clothing for skiing which can be hired at the Sport and Rec Centre in Jindabyne.
You will need waterproof pants and jacket, which costs $33 to hire at the centre (all prices are from 2014 – will
confirm if they have increased). Gloves and goggles can be hired for $11 per item for the 4 days. If you want to
purchase goggles, beanie and gloves, the centre has a deal for $50 for the lot. You will also need some layers to
wear under your ski gear and some ski socks (not too thick, and they should not have ridges in them).
You do not need “après” boots (if you have them that’s okay).

SPORTS NEWS ALL SCHOOLS SWIMMING CARNIVAL - A very big congratulations to two Year 12 Students for their amazing
achievements at the 2016 All Schools Swimming Carnival.
Tahlia (holding the program!) swam in the 6 x 50m All Age Relay and proudly led the girls to a top 10 finish!
Christine swam in 5 individual events earning herself podium finishes!
These girls have swum and represented Mackellar for the past 6 years and will be terribly missed.
Thank you girls for your effort, enthusiasm and dedication to our Mackellar Swimming Team for the past 6 Years.

TOUCH FOOTBALL - Years 9/10 Touch Team are Number One in NSW.
The Year 9/10 Touch Football travelled to St Mary's on Thursday 26th May to play in the NSW Touch All Schools
Finals.
The team qualified for the quarter finals after being undefeated in their pool. They went on to win both the quarter
final and semi final in wonderful style. These comprehensive wins ensured a berth in the Grand Final against
Benowa State High School from Queensland.
The tightly contested match that ended in a draw, sent the game into extra time and a drop off situation. The girls
were exhausted after a full day's play and held on until there was only 4 players left on each team. In a last ditch
effort, the Benowa team dived over the line to score the final try of the match, finalising the result as a win to
Benowa SHS 3-2.
In this State of Origin style match, the Mackellar team representing New South Wales were outstanding. We are
able to come away from this match claiming the title as the best touch football team across all schools in New
South Wales. It also qualified the team to compete in the National Championships during September in
Queensland. An enormous thank you must go to Tua and Jodie Marsters for the wonderful assistance they
provided the team. Thank you also to Sabrina of Year 8 for joining the team as the referee.

KO TENNIS - Congratulations to the knock out Tennis team who beat Willoughby girls 4 sets to 2 on May 17.
The team is Gaby Y8, Bella Y9, Sophie Y10, Tylah Y11 and Ms Bayliss (team manager).
ZONE CROSS COUNTRY RESULTS - Congratulations to all of the students who competed at the Zone Cross
Country Carnival last Thursday 26th May at Pittwater Rugby Park. Mackellar girls were crowned the overall school
point winners on the day! The following Mackellar Girls were Zone Age Champions: 12 Years: Kahli Johnson, 14
years: Piper, 16 years: Jasmine and 18 years: Frida.
Good luck to all Mackellar students who will be competing at the Sydney North Cross Country Carnival in Gosford
on Friday 24th June.

DANCE NEWS Our Dance Ensembles are all working hard at the moment in preparation for various upcoming performances. Our
Junior, Intermediate and Senior Contemporary Ensembles will be representing the school at the 2016 Sydney
North Public Schools Dance Festival at Glen St Theatre which runs from June 20th – July 1st.
Congratulations are due to our Jazz Ensemble who had their first performance of 2016 on Saturday 28th May at
the eisteddfod I’d Rather Be Dancing, held at Pittwater House. This ensemble, whose item is choreographed by
Year 12 students Jacinta and Ashleigh, received 3rd Place. This is an outstanding achievement not only in itself,
but especially for a student-choreographed item. Their performance was fantastic – well done Jacinta, Ashleigh
and the ensemble made up of students from Years 8-12.
Another congratulations, this time for the Mackellar dancers’ selection to be part of the 2016 Schools
Spectacular, Dream Big. The Schools Spectacular is an outstanding showcase of the talent in NSW public
schools, involving a 2700 strong choir, 2300 diverse dancers, an 80 piece symphony orchestra, a world-class
stage band and a huge number of outstanding solo performers. The 2016 Schools Spectacular will be held at
Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney Olympic Park on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th November and rehearsals will
commence in September. Tickets for the 2016 Schools Spectacular will be available later this year through
Ticketek.
The following students participated in an Aboriginal Dance Workshop run by Bangarra Dance Theatre.
Congratulations to the following dancers who proudly represented Mackellar Girls on this day - Mia, Danielle,
Beverley, Christina , Charly, Sunny and Djirri.
Year 10 dancers Erika and Indiana were fortunate to be part of an exciting collaboration as part of their
commitment to the NSW State Senior Dance Company. During the April school holidays, they had the chance to
work closely with dancer/choreographer Josef Brown to create a re-interpretation of composer Igor Stravinsky’s
Firebird. The dancers performed alongside student musicians who worked with composer and animater Paul
Rissman and the culminating performance took place at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music on Saturday 16th
April.
Jasmyn (Year 8) will perform as a selected Musical Theatre artist as part of the Pulse Arts Initiative. This
performance will take place on Thursday 30th June at the Sydney Opera House. We wish Jasmyn all the best with
her upcoming show.
