PRESIDENTS’’:
How can it be November already? With all of the events and activities in full swing at Jackson, it is hard to believe
that the 2013-14 school year is only two months old! As Thanksgiving approaches, we want to take time to share
our heartfelt THANKS to our amazing Jackson High community.
THANK YOU to the teachers and families who made Curriculum Night a success. We hope you enjoyed the classroom visits and the opportunity to meet your students’ teachers and learn about what they are teaching.
THANK YOU to community members from Mill Creek Foursquare Church for their generous donations of barbecued hot dogs and time serving dinner to busy students and families who visited JHS for High School & Beyond
Night.
THANK YOU to the counseling staff for organizing and presenting High School & Beyond Night. This night is a wonderful resource for all families and makes it easier to face the rather daunting question, “What’s next?”
THANK YOU to our outstanding administration, faculty, and staff. Your support and dedication to our students is
nothing short of amazing! With three new administrators this fall, the year could have gotten off to a rocky start,
but Mr. Peters, Ms. Young, and Mr. Monaghan with returning assistant principal Mr. Rohrich succeeded in making
the transition seamless.
THANK YOU to our hard-working and devoted PTSA Board of Directors:
VPs–Membership, Meggin Podnar and Becky Hitchcock, for your many hours at the membership table, entering
and checking membership data, delivering electronic membership cards, and overall support of PTSA.
Treasurer, Sandi Mak, who keeps careful track of our budget and finances and is a “treasured” resource to all of us
on the board.
Co-Secretaries, Brandi Lind and Nicki Gorski, who coordinate all of our meeting agendas and memorialize our business at each meeting.
E-mail Administrator, Lori Taylor, who diligently works to keep our membership email list updated so our families
can receive Wolf Tracks and e-mail blasts to keep us all in-the-know regarding the many happenings in and around
our school community.
Jackson Leadership Council Liaisons, Kathryn Lee, Linda Pazevic, Shonda Reinikka, and Lisa Steckler for their commitment to a strong school and community. They dedicate their time and talents to provide a strong partnership
between parents and JHS administration.
Newsletter Publishers, Kathryn Lee and Barbara Nowak, and Newsletter Editor, DeeAnn Williamson, who meticulously gather articles, edit submissions, and publish our monthly newsletter, Wolf Tracks.
Program Coordinator, Lyn Lauzon, for bringing informative and relevant programs to our staff, families, and community to support a Culture of Caring.

Principal ’s MESSAGE’:
Dear Parents and Guardians:
I want to thank all of the parents who have helped get the 2013-14 year
off to a great start. We have so many dedicated parents who help support
all of our students. Without you, we wouldn’t be able to have such a wonderful variety of opportunities for our students. So again, I thank you.
I hope many of you were able to attend our Curriculum Night and High School & Beyond event.
These are two large events geared toward providing critical information for our community. If you
were unable to attend these events this year, please keep your eye out for the dates when they
come around again next fall.
Our school’s mission is “to provide a rigorous curriculum that sets high standards and prepares all
students for the future.” One critical piece in achieving this mission is parent involvement. While
parents aren’t part of the teaching staff, they are just as important to their children’s education.
Parent participation is the ingredient that makes the difference. Parents’ active involvement with
their children’s education at home and in school brings great rewards and can have a significant
impact on their children’s lives. According to research studies, the children of involved parents are
absent less frequently, are less likely to drop out, behave better, perform stronger academically
from pre-school through high school, and are more likely to pursue education after high school.
Your child will receive the best education when you and our dedicated teachers work as a team.
It’s parent enthusiasm, support, and involvement that pushes children to do their best and a
teacher’s ability to teach what they need to learn. Together we can achieve wonderful things.
Thank you for your commitment to your child’s eduIMPORTANT DATES
cation, and I look forward to seeing
you in the very near future.

PSAT Results in December!
Everett Public Schools wants every student to be college- and career-ready by
the time they graduate. One strategy to meet this goal was to provide the opportunity for all juniors to take the PSAT in October. These test results will be
handed out to students the third week of December in US History and English 3 classes. Sophomores who took the test will be invited to get their score
reports by attending a lunch session in the library.
The PSAT is a practice SAT exam given to students to help them prepare for the
actual SAT, which is typically completed in spring of junior year or fall of senior
year for those wanting to enroll in a university after high school graduation.
Both the PSAT and SAT test students in three main components: Math, Critical
Reading, and Writing (essay writing on the SAT) or Writing Skills (multiple
choice on the PSAT).
All students who took the test will be given a score report showing their
scores, percentiles, areas of strength/weakness, and what things could be improved before they take the SAT. Students will also gain access to My College
Quickstart (www.collegeboard.org). Juniors will receive additional guidance
through two classroom lessons with the counselors where they will not only
get an interpretation of results but also do a career interest inventory and
start researching post-high school options, including college opportunities.
Call the Anonymous Drug Tipline with any

First-year science teacher from Henry M. Jackson High School excited to teach science
STEM teacher, Brielle Kemis, receives Teaching Tools grant from educational foundation
Principal Dave Peters (right), Assistant Principal Kevin Rohrich, and STEM Science
Curriculum Specialist surprised Kemis and her students—explaining to all why she
was getting the $1,000 check and congratulating her. Students applauded her
achievement, and, of course, are interested to know how the money will be used.
Brielle Kemis knew she wanted to teach science and was one of 50 recipients who
previously received a $5,000 AFCEA Educational Foundation STEM Teacher Scholarship (Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association). These grants go
to undergraduate, graduate and credential or licensure students preparing to teach
science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects in U.S. middle or secondary schools.
As a first year science teacher at Henry M. Jackson High School, Kemis has also earned a $1,000 AFCEA STEM Teaching Tools
grant. She will receive a $1,000 check each year for three years because she is teaching a STEM subject. Kemis can use these
grants to fund hardware and software, other classroom tools, field trips, STEM-focused clubs and other activities aligned with
student learning
“JHS is continuing to advance as a STEM school and this grant shows the dedication that our teachers have in continuing to
offer great experiences to our students. We are lucky to have Brielle in our building and look forward to continuing to work
with her as she advances in her career,” said Assistant Principal Kevin Rohrich.

The Jackson Way
Pride – Taking pride in all you do. Pride is not exhibited by
what you say; instead, pride is displayed by your actions.
Excellence – Excellence is putting forth your best effort in
all you do regardless of the circumstances. If you would be
willing to put your name on your work and have it displayed for
all to see, then you have achieved Excellence.
Character – Do what is right regardless of who is watching.
Character is not situational. Instead, a person’s character
should be predictable. For me a quote that reflects one’s
character is, “Doing what is popular is not always right, but
doing what is right is not always popular.” Character means
you consistently do that which you believe to be right, and you
do so even when no one is watching.

Pathway to Pride, Excellence, and Character
The Jackson Way is becoming a way of life at Henry M. Jackson High School. And that’s just the way we like it!
The Pathway to Pride, Excellence, and Character Awards were adopted to ensure that students are recognized
for their actions exemplifying The Jackson Way in the classroom, home, and community. By doing so, we focus
on the whole person and fostering strong, productive citizens. Learn more about the Pathway to Pride,
Excellence, and Character award program here.
Staff, students, friends, family, and community members who witness or receive the good work being done by
our young adults are encouraged to send in acknowledgements. A monthly program recognizes commended
students with their parents invited to the ceremony. If you are fortunate to “catch” a Jackson High student
displaying pride, excellence, or character, please complete a nomination form and submit it in a sealed
envelope (labeled Pathway to Pride, Excellence, and Character; Attention: Blythe Young) to the school’s main
office or email it or your questions to Assistant Principal Blythe Young at [email protected].
It’s that simple! Anyone can do this. Nominations are always open and taken on a continual basis. You may

Math teacher
Gadek honored
Each year, new students at
Stanford University are
invited to acknowledge a
teacher or mentor who
played a significant role in
preparing them for college
intellectually, academically, socially, and/or personally. Stanford’s annual Teacher Tribute Initiative acknowledges these
individuals and their contributions to the students. In addition, each teacher receives a certificate from the university on
behalf of the nominating student.
JHS math teacher Jason Gadek was nominated by 2013 JHS
graduate Jackie Becker, who noted: “Mr. Gadek possesses a
unique internal flame that shines a passionate light on both
the subject he teaches and on the people he instructs. At his
school, he has pioneered programs that bring students together and served as a mentor and friend to countless young
scholars. His influence has profoundly changed the lives of his
students, in whom he has instilled a ravenous curiosity and a
drive for betterment. Mr. Gadek not only teaches his students
to love math, but he also teaches them to appreciate life.”

Oktoberfest
It’s hard to believe that Halloween is already over and Thanksgiving is just around the corner! This year’s
annual Jackson High Oktoberfest was a major success. On October 30, hundreds of costumed kids from local
elementary schools flooded the JHS lunchroom to play games and, of course, earn candy! Activities ranged
from painting pumpkins (National Art Honor Society/Art Club) to braving the infamous “Haunted
Hallway” (Key Club). To top it all off, Jackson’s very own Theatre Society showcased a Halloween-themed
play to the sugar-buzzed kids. Even with all the fun and games, our community remembers that there are
families struggling to put food on the table, so once again Oktoberfest collected canned food to benefit the
Mill Creek Food Bank. Every year Oktoberfest keeps on getting bigger and better—uniting our wonderful
community. See you next year!

Congratulations and thank you, Mrs. Tanner and Mrs. Walters!
You exemplify excellence, The Jackson Way.
Science Teachers at The Hutch.
Hutch. What did you do this summer?
Making DNA and running gels is what biology teacher Carole Tanner did for eight weeks
this summer at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Mrs. Tanner was among a
group of select science educators from the Northwest, one of 11 in Washington, to work in
research labs to promote science education.
This prestigious two-year Partner in Science program, sponsored by the M.J. Murdock
Charitable Trust, partnered her with evolutionary biologist Katie Peichel studying the way
stickleback fish taken from different isolated Northwest lakes and streams react to viruses
and if the fish are adapting ways to combat those viruses.
Along with the distinction of studying with leading science researchers, Mrs. Tanner’s fellowship also included a $10,000
grant, which she plans to use to purchase scientific equipment for her classroom. Mrs. Tanner teaches Biology, AP Biology,
and new course Biotechnology. Her research at “The Hutch” allows her to incorporate real-world laboratory research into her
students’ high school biology classes. The foundation for this fellowship began with her first Science Education Partnership
(SEP) workshop at the Hutchinson Center five years ago, where she learned lab techniques to work in a research lab and
developed a curriculum based on her experience and specially tailored to meet the needs of her science students. Since then,
Mrs. Tanner has returned as a lead teacher mentoring new SEP teachers. Mrs. Tanner returns to The Hutch again next
summer to complete her two-year Murdock fellowship and continue to bring her expertise in science research to inspire her
students at Jackson High. For more information on Mrs. Tanner’s Murdock Fellowship, read here: http://www.fhcrc.org/en/
news/center-news/2013/07/science-education-partnership-carole-tanner.html
Jackson science teacher Gail Walters went to “summer school.” She was among a
select group of science teachers from across Washington chosen to participate in the
Science Education Partnership (SEP) at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
The goal of the program is for these teachers to bring what they’ve learned back to their
classrooms to enhance their students’ learning of bioscience and research, nurture their
interest in jobs and careers in science, and teach them solid science concepts from
which to make lifelong informed decisions such as understanding health care issues.
The science teachers began their summer program as students in a classroom to learn
laboratory basics before dividing half their time in a local academic research institution or biotechnology firm and the other
half of their time in the teaching laboratory at the Hutchinson Center to focus on refining their school curricula and
incorporating effective ways to use their science research concepts and techniques in the classroom. Mrs. Walters worked in
the UW Molecular and Cellular Biology department studying yeast genetics, where she used micropipetting and gel
electrophoresis skills.
Participation in the SEP also includes the loan of science kits for teachers to use in their classrooms so they can teach their
students to apply the research techniques learned through the SEP program. Mrs. Walter’s biology students are using a
micropipet kit and later will use a DNA unit where they will conduct DNA analyses as part of a mystery case scenario. “I had
never worked in research before so this gave me a chance to see what requirements and skills are necessary to be a successful
researcher. With this background I can more accurately inform students about science career possibilities,” said Mrs. Walters.
This also “allows me to make the learning more relevant by using true scientific tools,” she commented. In addition to
teaching Biology, Mrs. Walters also teaches Environmental Systems Design and AVID. To read about the Hutchinson Center’s
SEP program, click on the following link: http://www.fhcrc.org/en/news/releases/2013/07/science-teachers-join-labs.html

Henry M. Jackson High School students recognized for
contributions to science research
Shruti Parikh (12th grade) and Jacqueline Nguyen (11th grade), students at Henry M. Jackson High
School, were selected as finalists for the Washington State Academy of Sciences (WSAS) Junior Academy
Award in the spring of 2013.
Both students were formally recognized for their contributions to science research at the 6th Annual
WSAS Meeting and Symposium held on September 12 in Seattle. Students toured the Museum of Flight,
dined, and discussed current and future projects with notable scientists in their fields of interest.
Ms. Parikh, Dr. David L. Eaton, Dean of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, and Professor
Estella B. Leopold of the Department of Biology at the University of Washington discussed several fieldleading initiatives that closely relate to Parikh’s research in Phytoremediation of Arsenic in Coal Dust
using Western Sword Ferns (Polystichum munitum).
Ms. Nguyen met with Dr. Usha Varanasi from the University of Washington’s College of the
Environment and Dr. R. Curtis Graeber of the Graeber Group and discussed potential next steps in her
research concerning Minimizing Size and Weight in Standard Military Rations (MRE) for Increased
Optimization for Field Use.
“It was so impressive listening to the conversations the students had with the Science Academy
members. Seeing very distinguished
Ph.D.s talking to high school students
on an even footing was truly
amazing,” said Andy Sevald, Research
and Engineering Club advisor at Henry
M. Jackson High School.
“There was no pandering, dumbing
down, or condescension; in the eyes
of the Academy these students had
proven themselves, and a tone of
mutual respect was very evident,”
concluded Sevald.

concise, well-documented, and timely resource, A
Framework for School-Wide Bullying Prevention and
Safety: www.nasponline.org/resources/bullying/
Bullying_Brief_12.pdf.
If we have to cancel school or delay the start of school,
we will use our parent communication system to call in
the morning after 5:45 a.m. with a brief message about
the reason for closure or delay. We will also use local
media and post the message on our website. If there is
no announcement about Everett Public Schools,
school is on the regular schedule.
Stopbullying.gov has lots of bullying prevention information and strategies. There are training modules,
PowerPoints, toolkits, videos, resources, state-by-state
laws and policies, suggestions about how
to talk about bullying with your kids, and much more.
FAFSA
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is an
office of the U.S. Department of Education. FAFSA coordinates with postsecondary schools and financial institutions to help students and families pay for college.
FAFSA application season begins in January. Watch for
FAFSA completion events happening around the district. Find more information at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Comcast Internet Essentials
Comcast Essentials is a program that offers internet for
about $10 per month for qualifying families, a low-cost
laptop for about $150, and free internet training. If you
are not currently a Comcast customer and your student
qualifies for free or reduced meals at school, go to
www.internetessentials.com or call
1-855-8-INTERNET (1-855-846-8376) to learn more.
To see more information about preparing and resources for school closures or delays, see the district website under the PARENTS tab.
In cases of inclement weather or other emergencies,
please
 listen for media announcements,
 view the district’s website at www.everettsd.org, or
 call our district information line, 425-385-4636.
JHS office staff ask that you please check the above
sources before calling the school office.

Happenings
Mill Creek Library
Fall is in full swing at the Mill Creek Library! Teens and adults participating in National Novel Writing Month
(NaNoWriMo) are encouraged to come to a “write-in” at the café in the University Book Store in Mill Creek Town
Center on Monday, November 4, from 6-8 p.m. Join local teen author A.R. Kahler, author of the Immortal Circus trilogy,
and other inspiring writers to work on reaching your word count for the day. A.R. Kahler will also be happy to answer
questions, offer writing tips, and even sign a book if you bring one. This program is open to writers of all ages.
Teen DIY returns on Wednesday, November 6, from 4-5 p.m. Teens can go back in time and make the ‘80s favorite fuse
bead creations. They can make a fuse bead project to take home and become inspired to try more! Bonus: They can
also learn about awesome library resources that can help boost their creativity!
The final Teen Game Night of 2013 will take place on Friday, November 15, from 7-9 p.m. Teens can come get their
game on and grow new technology skills with friends by playing Rock Band, Wii, or Xbox Kinect or battle it out with
board games like Twister, Jenga, and Apples to Apples. Pizza and snacks are provided by the Friends of the Mill Creek
Library. Teen Game Night is open to teens in grades 6-12.
Instead of buying holiday gifts on Black Friday, teens can come to the library and make their own holiday gifts—
buttons, duct tape wallets, jewelry, and holiday cards—on Friday, November 29, from 2-4 p.m., and check out books
on other handmade gifts. Craft supplies are funded by the Friends of the Mill Creek Library.
For more information about these and other library programs, please contact Danielle Dreger-Babbitt, Adult/Teen
Librarian at the Mill Creek Library, at [email protected] or (425)337-4822 ext, 4233. The Mill Creek Library
is located at 15429 Bothell-Everett Highway, across the street from Central Market.
