BARROW UPON TRENT PARISH NEWS JULY/AUGUST 2014 www.barrowupontrentparish.co.uk Greenacres from St Wilfrid’s ST WILFRID’S CHURCH – BAD NEWS AND GOOD NEWS!! Please come to our Open Day – Tuesday 8th July How would you feel if you were told that our church had to close and was not available for the parish to use again? It is a very real possibility, and in the nottoo-distant future. We all want to keep OUR church building – yes, it is OUR church and does not belong to anyone else. It is here to serve the people of this parish, as it has been since around 800 AD when it was first built by the people of Barrow upon Trent. It is here and available when we want to have family baptisms, weddings or funerals, and year-after-year for the Christmas, Easter and Harvest services that many people enjoy. It is here for the village school to have its end-of-term services each year. The church belongs to us all in Barrow, and is kept open only through the efforts of a few parishioners. Money is not available from Government, taxes, Church of England funds, or anywhere else. All of the running and maintenance costs are met by the people of this parish. Most of our regular (and reducing) congregation are now elderly who live on fixed incomes; the running costs of the building are rising inexorably - heating, lighting and insurance take up most of the church’s annual income. Now for the good news! We can make it possible for the building to continue and to provide a resource for everyone – not just for those who go to Sunday services and youth group. We could make the church what it was when it was first built – a parish community space. We have been able, with legacies and grant funding, to ensure that the walls and roof of the building are reasonably secure and weather proof. The inside of the church now needs some work to make it more user-friendly! We have started to meet with architects, historical buildings organisations, South Derbyshire and the Diocese to investigate the possibility of making the church building more useful and more exciting for people to visit. It is the largest building in the parish and has the potential to become a focus for other activities; meetings, business conferences, concerts, exercise groups, music rehearsals, dinner parties, etc. The possibilities are many, and will result in income that will keep the church building alive and thriving. By doing this we can preserve our beautiful church and also continue to provide the services that people want for their families – Sunday services, weddings etc. We are 1 not proposing to change the basic function of the building – it will still provide church services with a dedicated religious area in the Chancel. This is not a request for money from you – if we take this project forward we shall seek grants from various organisations to make this work possible. What we need from you is SUPPORT. You can demonstrate your support by coming to our Open Day on the 8th July (see the separate poster) or by contacting us to let us know you are with us. The St Wilfrid’s Church Council is prepared to work very hard to make this project happen if this is what you want. Whether you think this is a good or a bad idea, you are equally entitled to let us know how you feel – please do so. However, if it does not happen, then we can confidently say that St Wilfrid’s Church, that recent research has shown is of National importance, will close in the next couple of years through lack of funds. We don’t want that to happen! A member of the public reported that the 3 bins at the community park were constantly full and that they had noticed an increase in the number of cars parking at the bottom of the village hall car park in the early evenings, with the occupants smoking and drinking leaving behind litter. Mr Wayne Harvey-Toon spoke on behalf of the Brookfield Colts and informed the meeting that a new under 13 Sunday team was being formed and that an advert for players would be placed in the Parish News. He also mentioned that nets will need to be placed along the boundary fence between the football pitch and the neighbouring field to prevent the ball going out of play too often. Dist. Cllr Peter Watson reported that Cllr Neil Atkin had been elected Vice Chairman of SDDC for 2014-15. With reference to the trees on Twyford Road a TPO has been served but the owner can still apply for work to be done to them. With reference to the application for building of houses on Chapel Lane, this will possibly be down for the June 27th planning committee meeting. Issues are still on-going at Hill Lodge and The Hill and enforcements have been served, the planning officers continue to monitor these developments. Make sure you’re always prepared, your exits are clear and everyone knows what to do if the worst should happen. As summer approaches, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service, as part of the Fire Kills campaign, is asking To find out more fire safety information, please visit people to make sure their family, guests and loved ones www.gov.uk/firekills . know how to get out, stay out, and call 999 in the event of a fire. A smoke alarm can give people the warning they need to get out of their home in a fire, but a blocked exit, locked door or unfamiliar surroundings can often shave vital seconds from their escape time, exposing them to the fatal dangers of toxic smoke. Some simple steps and a clear escape plan in the event of a fire will help ensure that everyone can get out, stay out and call 999: • Fit a smoke alarm on at least every level of your home and test them regularly. A working smoke alarm can buy you valuable time in a fire. • Prepare and practise a plan of action to help you act quickly if there’s a fire in your home. • Keep your escape route clear to ensure a speedy exit. • Make sure everyone knows where the door and window keys are kept. We are also reminding people of the vital importance of helping those who are less able to help themselves. If you have a dependent to think about SALE AND DAVYS PLAYGROUP • Make sure you’ve planned an escape route and think of any difficulties people may have in getting out, create solutions such as a torch to light their way or a stair rail. • Consider the best place to go if the worst happens and someone can’t escape, especially if they have trouble moving around or can’t get downstairs on their own. • Nominate someone in your home (perhaps a child) to be the ‘Escape champ’ - Regularly role-play escape routes and give children the responsibility to keep escape routes clear. We all love a good get-together when the weather picks up, but if you’re having guests round this summer, there’s no need to leave them in the dark when it comes to safety. Just two to three breaths of toxic smoke could leave you unconscious, so every second counts when escaping a fire and a working smoke alarm and knowing the escape plan in an emergency could make all the difference. It’s the end of another great year for Sale and Davys Playgroup. We’re all very busy in the final term keeping fit. The children have been collectively running 69 miles to show our support for the amazing Simon Moore who ran the length of Hadrian’s Wall and in the process raised very welcome funds for the Playgroup. If you have dependents or someone less able to care for, Thank you Simon – your support is amazing! Sports day is fast approaching and the children are making 5 great use of the improved outdoor space at the front NEWS FROM SALE & DAVYS of the Village Hall.
