Follow us on twitter: @sja_bloodhounds Tino Villarreal [email protected]—[email protected] The Saint Joseph Academy Track & Field team competed at the TAPPS State Meet May 6th & 7th in Waco, TX at Baylor University. The following students qualified for State: Boys 400 meter relay: Cole Conner, Miguel Guerra, Adrian Perez and Mario Garcia Boys 800 meter relay: Cole Conner, Adrian Perez, Gerardo Moses and Miguel Guerra Gaby Garza in the 100 & 300 meter hurdles Mario Garcia in the 400 meter run Mario Oliva-Sanchez in the 1,600 & 3,200 meter run Marifer Valencia and Camryn Gloor in the Pole Vault Miguel Guerra in the 200 meter dash in 4th place. Miguel Guerra finished 7th in the 200 meter dash. All in all this was a great finish to an amazing season in which Gaby Garza broke three school records and Mario Garcia broke the 400m record held since 1973. Congratulations to all of our State Qualifiers for making us proud. Also congratulations to Coach Meme Garza and the track and field coaching staff! The boys 400 & 800 meter relay finished 7th and 8th respectfully. Gaby Garza earned a silver medal in both the 100 & 300 meter hurdles. Mario Garcia also earned a silver medal in the 400 meter run. Mario Oliva-Sanchez placed 6th in the 3,200 meter run. Camryn Gloor finished Mario Garcia 400m Silver Gaby Garza 100&300m Silver The Saint Joseph Academy Baseball team traveled to Argyle, TX to play the Liberty Christian Warriors in the first round of the TAPPS State Playoffs. The boys had a good start and then eventually fell to a really good Warrior team. The Bloodhounds were coached by Christian Putegnat and graduate eight seniors: Adrian Garza, Ruben Lopez, Andres Borrego, Miguel Robledo, Adrian Garcia, Matthew Swartz, Nick Leal and Alexander Shane. The upcoming season returns many starters and should be a very promising year. 2016 Baseball Team pictured after Playoff Game Dave Lapeyre, Abraham Caram & Joey Navarro Gerardo Elizondo & Andres Rico Six Saint Joseph Academy Seniors were selected to play in the Rio Grande Valley All Star games this year. Gerardo Elizondo, Andres Rico and Gerardo Moses were selected to play in the RGV Coaches Association Soccer Game held on May 7th at Weslaco East High School. They played for the East team. Gerardo Moses (not pictured) was not able to play, he was at the TAPPS State Track meet that same day. Jose Santiago Navarro, Abraham Caram and Dave Lapeyre were selected by the RGV Coaches Association to play in the Football All Star Game held May 21st at Weslaco’s Bobby Lackey Stadium. They played for the East Team. These selections are the most SJA has had in recent years. We are so proud of our Bloodhounds! The Saint Joseph Academy Booster Club hosted the annual Varsity Athletic Banquet May 12th at the Middle Division Gym. This year was one of the largest crowds with over 360 people in attendance. Mr. Ben Sandoval was the master of ceremonies where he highlighted sports accomplishments: The Cross Country team had a good showing at the Regional meet. They qualified 15 members to the State Meet in Waco, TX. The Football team marked one of the best seasons in recent history with an 8-3 record. They defeated Port Isabel for the 1st time in 38 years and hosted a playoff game for the first time in 30 years. Seven members received All State honors. The Tennis team finished 3rd place in TAPPS 5A this year, marking one of the strongest finishes in recent history under new coach Oscar Garza. Six members qualified for State. The Swim team boys finished 3rd overall at the Regional Meet. There were 7 boys and 4 girls who qualified for State. Santiago Davila broke the school record in the 200 meter free style. Adrian Fierro set two records in the 50m and 100m freestyle. The Soccer team finished with an 18-6-1 record and won the district championship for the second year in a row. They made the State Tournament Final Four for the second year in a row. Five members received All State honors. The Golf team girls finished 4th at Regionals and Mariana Garcia qualified to the State Tournament. The boys and girls Basketball teams both made the state playoffs and attended the Regional Tournament held in College Station, TX. The Baseball team made the state playoffs and traveled to Argyle, TX to play against the Liberty Christian Warriors. The Track team qualified 7 members to the State Meet and Gaby Garza and Mario Garcia medaled as they finished 2nd in their races. Gaby also broke 3 school records and Mario broke the 400m record. There were 36 young players from the city of Brownsville and Los Fresnos who attended and were coached by the entire SJA coaching staff including some senior and current players. This concept came about when SJA graduate class of 1998 Santana Torres contacted the school and asked if we had any camps for youth. Santana currently coaches the Brownsville Cowboys a team under the Texas Youth Football Association. He has two sons, Alex and Diego both of them participated in this years SJA camp. “Having our field covered with young kids was something very pleasant to see. It reminded me of when I was in elementary and couldn't wait to walk the halls of Saint Joe” said Tino Villarreal. SJA Summer camp will feature five sports, students can select any three. We will be offering: Tennis Football Soccer Track Basketball Every Friday there will be fun competitions such as capture the flag, water balloon fights and dodgeball. The final day of camp will feature a lock-in and a Barbeque where fun team building activities will be played. If you are interested in attending, this camp or know of anyone who should be attending please feel free to stop by the Administration Building to register. The deadline is Thursday, June 2, 2016.
