Interview: Amy Perkins Interviews Perk Darlington
Perk came to Santa Barbara from Pennsylvania to attend USC. He is the
middle child in his family with one older sister and one younger sister.
When Perk was a young boy he wanted to be a “grown up” when he grew up.
Perk was in the United States Navy from 1964-1970. His hobbies include
trivia and history. He is interested in knowing what is going on in the
world: past, present, and future.
Program - Blas Garza - Tracing the Garza Family Roots
Mark Garza introduced his father. Blas Garza was born in 1934 in Runge, Texas. He graduated from high school in 1953 and then joined the United States
Army. Once he was out of the Army he attended the University of Texas obtaining his Bachelor’s Degree in English and History. Blas was married in 1959
and his son, Mark, was born in 1961. Soon after, Blas attended the University
of Houston and received his masters in Special Education in 1965. His daughter Melodee was born in 1967. Blas then went on to get his PhD in Educational
Administration from the University of Southern California. Throughout his life
Blas has been a teacher, principal, super intendant and assistant super intendant
at various schools in Santa Barbara. He loves volunteering and giving back to his
community.
Blas comes from a long line of “Garzas dating back to the Eleventh Century. In his quest to understand
and map out his family history he has uncovered many facts and stories about his ancestors. It all
started when his cousin Edna researched the Garzas and published a document specifically about them
throughout history. Nestor Garza was the first Garza in the Americas and he first arrived in Texas in
1886 where he applied for a homestead grant and became a citizen. Upon coming to Texas Nestor lost the
“de la” and became Nestor Garza (rather than Nestor De La Garza). Nestor was a direct descendant of
the first Spaniard to come to Mexico in 1583.
Edna had a book mapping out the heritage of the lower Rio Grande the shed
light on conquistador history which let them know that many Garzas were
in the military. During that time Captains in the military could come to the
America’s without having paperwork or going through the usual process which
explains why their documentation is missing. Francisco De La Garza was the
founder of Monterey where many Garzas live today. Garzas have been deeply
involved in politics in the area for years.
Garza is located back to the Eleventh Century in Galicia Spain. The inquisition
in Spain explains the Garzas’ emigration to Mexico from Spain during the 1400s.
The Celts had begun to inhabit Galicia in 1000 B.C. and they have a different
culture than most Spaniards. The dialect of Spanish they speak is called Gallego.
