It is designed to be one of discipline. I remember the story of a priest some years ago who gave up Chinese food for Lent (apparently he liked it a lot). As Lent grew to a close, he began to anticipate how good it would be to sit down and enjoy a celebratory meal of Chinese food on Palm Sunday. As sure as he had planned it, he went straight from the church to his favorite restaurant and bought all of his favorite dishes. He literally ate himself sick. So, the question that begs an answer is, what did this Lenten sacrifice bring about? The truth of the matter is that this is how all too many people approach Lent and Lenten devotions. The call of Christ is that we are to die to self that we might live in, with and through Christ Jesus. God isn't really very concerned with our bubble gum, soda or Chinese food cravings. What He is concerned with is the condition of our hearts. Lent is a time of sacrificing the physical for the sake of the spiritual, emptying ourselves so that we can be filled up. Whether you take back up that which you have set aside this Lenten season, I pray that you have taken on a new and deeper walk with the Lord. I pray that He has revealed Himself to you in a more powerful way and above all I pray that you have had an undeniable interaction with the Lord, Jesus Christ that will lead you to Easter and beyond. I have often quoted an Orthodox friend of mine in saying, we are not humans having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience. Allow the Spirit of the Lord to encompass you as we move towards the Great Paschal Feast that we may die to self and truly live in Christ Jesus, our Lord.
