he recovery here in the islands is still slow. The
future, however, looks bright.
HADA is predicting something just over 3% as the gain
for 2010.
The operative word is “gain.” The gain for 2011 is
predicted at 6%.
Disney is opening a billion-dollar property this
year out in West Oahu. With the advent of all the
new automotive technology Hawaii is thinking about what it will be like in
“TomorrowLand”.
We know for sure that the near future, 2011, is one for which dealers have
many more compliance requirements placed upon them. All the new federal
requirements will increase the cost of doing business. The cost of noncompliance may be even greater.
NADA has issued helpful guidelines on how dealers can comply with the
new federal Risk-Based Pricing Rule and also just issued guidelines on how
to comply with the new Model Privacy Notice. Both rules take effect
January 1, 2011.
Go to www.nadauniversity.com to order the material from NADA.
For Hawaii dealers who haven’t looked into complying with these
two federal rules—please know that they are a handful. It may take 6-8
hours for one of your compliance people to get a handle on the new model
privacy notice. Instructions, for example, are 54 pages long. It is not a matter of
just photocopying a new form. You have to customize the new form based on
your dealership’s practices.
HADA’s role in helping dealers with compliance issues is similar to NADA’s
role at the national level, with HADA’s focus being on the state and local level.
Here’s looking to a prosperous 2011 for everyone.

Hawaii’s 2011 Dealer of the
Year just goes by “Bill Van”
W
ilhelmus Maria Petronela van den Hurk
has been named Hawaii’s 2011 State
Dealer of the Year. Born in Eindhoven
Holland and given the first name of his father
and grandfather, he immigrated with his family
to Canada from the Netherlands in 1954 when
he was nine years old. “The passenger liner was
called Big Bear, and the long trip involved horrible
North Atlantic seas,” recalls Bill, who goes by the
shortened handle suggested by one of his first car
customers, years later.
“I spoke no English. I was in third grade and they
put me back in first which is probably one of the
reasons I don’t have an accent today,” said Bill.
“My brother was 16 and he still has a heavy Dutch
accident.” Later, Bill’s mother and father and sister
returned to Europe. “I still talk to my sister every
Sunday in Dutch. You just don’t forget”, says Bill.
6
Bill’s 1957 Black Chevy NOVA wagon was on display at the HADA 50th
anniversary in 2009
Sitting at his meticulously-kept desk, at Aloha Kia, in
the corner landmark known for years as the South Seas
Restaurant, and surrounded by his Danburry Mint pewter
car collection of 35 years, Bill recalls every date as he
recounts a story about becoming an auto dealer.
I was so young and small I had to stand on a box behind
the counter in order to help with the customers at my
dad’s butcher shop in Oak Ridges, Ontario. His father
later went into the cattle buying and selling business.
“In those days they called the job a cattle drover and
that was where, at a young age, I learned how to make
a deal,“ said Bill. “My father was like the salesman who
could sell ice to Eskimos; everyone knew him by the
nickname given to him, ‘Kaiser Whilhelm’.”
Bill was Wilhelmus when he started selling shoes at 17.
The young shoe salesman was
soon named to management. “I
remember giving my dad two pairs
of shoes when he climbed on the
plane to head back to Europe,”
he remembers with a shake of
the head recalling how hard times
were. But soon enough he’d earned
enough money to buy his first
car—a used ’59 Volkswagen, for
which he paid $995.
experience” involved an hour-long test drive and was
renown throughout Canada.
One weekend, a doctor came in wanted to buy a
Porsche, and “of course Mr. Pfaff was out,” Bill said. “I
didn’t know the price but I was sure that Mr. Pfaff would
want the car sold.’ The doctor offered to overpay on the
spot so he could drive home to show his wife--vowing to
return later that day to sign all the paperwork. When
evening came he hadn’t returned. So Bill, who was
worried about the unfilled paperwork, drove to the
doctor’s house and found the doctor at a large formal
dinner party. Embarrassed at his absentmindedness, the
doctor signed all the documents and on the following
Monday returned to pick up his overpayment amount—
but handed the amount over to a surprised Bill and
apologizing for the stress caused.
The owner of the dealership, Hans J.
Pfaff, a likeable older German man,
offered him a job washing cars for
$60 a week. “It was cold up there
in Canada and I worked outside,”
recalls Bill. “By October, when the
snows were falling, I approached Mr.
Pfaff and told him I’d like to be a
mechanic and work inside.”
“Soon I was changing oil and
other duties but says he was always Bill with wife Niki at their Aloha Kia dealership.

a Volkswagen dealership owned by Don Burns. “I still

“Well, we then had three barn-burner months,” Bill
One of his early VW customers, a vice president of Steel
recalls. Pfaff soon returned to health and Bill went back

“I’d change that to Bill Van.” He did. Bill, in fact, still has

find it, before adding, “I soon was
the number one salesman there.”
In ’71 he became the manager of a
Don Burns VW used car operation
and by contracting with a nearby
body shop and upholstery shop
–dressing out the used VWs in
outlandish colors (turquoise, pink,
lavender) was able to boost sales
from 25 a month to 45-50 a month.
In ’73 the Arab oil embargo hit. It
was rough for business Bill recalls.
He went then from VW used cars
to the high end part of the Burns
operation, starting as sales manager
for the Porsche-Audi store and in
‘74 became general sales manager
of all the Burns VW, Porsche-Audi
and Datsun-Subaru operations.
Bill with 2010 Hawaii State Teacher of the Year, Wima Chulakote (with key), and HADA
president Stan Masamitsu (shown on far right)
“I remember one night Mr. Burns
brought John Wayne to the
dealership. I saw the Duke from a distance across the
dealership coming down from upstairs and I said to a
nearby salesman, ‘I think he’s bald.’ The famous actor,
who must have had very good hearing, walked across
the dealership and came up to me and said, ‘Whal, fellah,
ya gotta watch that voice-a yers…it carries.’”
Bill points to the signed Reagan picture on the wall
with pride.
He points with equal pride to the rotary piston on the
shelf behind his desk. “It was taken from the engine of
a GT3 Mazda sports car—the one that won the National
Championship in Road Atlanta in 1985.
Then, after working for Burns for 10 years, in June of
1978 Bill put together a buy-sell agreement for the
Burns dealerships in Garden Grove, California, as a 25%
partner in the Porsche/Audi and Garden Grove Datsun/
Subaru stores.
Bill said he remains close friends with Don Burns and
pointed to a check for $10,000 Burns just sent him for the
animal shelter Friends for Life—a non-profit organization
Bill has supported for years. “We’ll match his donation
with one of our own for $10,000 next month,” he said.
Only 8 months later, with a new partner, Jim Crowley, Bill
bought out the other two owners. Bill was 33 years old.
Burns bought back in briefly as a 1/3rd partner.
Over the years, Bill owned or owned parts of Prestige
Porsche in Glendale, California; Sail Chevrolet in Laguna
Beach, California, and also acquired a new Mazda
franchise in Anaheim.
In ’82, he traded the Porsche store in Glendale for a
Mazda store in Santa Anna, California to be closer to
his home. It was during this Orange County period that
he became an early supporter of Ronald Reagan, the
actor, who was running for governor and then later
for president.

the Big Island.
In ’83 he opened Carriage Motors in Hanford California,
carrying Cadillac, Pontiac, and Chrysler.
He sold all his dealerships in ’89 and invested in
a product called “Locator” –an early predecessor

After returning to the car business in ’93, two former
partners in Locator, Doug Mazza and John Dorsey, who
were #2 and #3 at the Hyundai car company, asked Bill

Within a few years, he and Niki were able to buy out
Lillas and soon opened Aloha Hyundai/Kia on Maui and
Waipahu and Hilo. Also later adding a Harley-Davidson
dealership in Kona in ’09 and one in Kauai in ’10.
Bill returns to one of his favorite topics, the Friends for
Life animal shelter he supports in Waianae. “We have
235 dogs in the shelter.” We are raising money for a
mobile neutering unit; it’s the only way to stop inhumane
treatment of animals.”
Bill recently donated a van to the shelter. “It’s one of my
passions,” he said. Another is to build a gaslectric®, a
term Bill registered, car using a new generator for which
he has applied for patents, he added.
Bill credits the “great staff” at Aloha Kia for allowing him
to find the time to pursue those passions. It’s a staff that
includes Tim Rasic as COO and Russ Wong as CFO.
Bill and Niki spend half their time on Oahu and half
on the Big Island. They purchased a home in Waimea,
which includes 15 acres and 3 mules—a white male
named Casper, a black male named Elvis (Bill had met
the real Elvis early in his career when the King had
come in to test drive two celebrity-owned Datsuns
at the Burns dealership). Bill also has miniature mule
named Koka Kona—“a gift from Niki,” Bill adds with a
big smile.

2011 Hawaii State Teacher of the Year
Hawaii’s Honda Dealers presented a new Honda hybrid (use for a year) to Hawaii’s
2011 State Teacher of the Year at ceremonies held at Castle High School
KANEOHE, HI—The Hawaii State
Department of Education named Kristen
Brummel of Noelani Elementary School as
the 2011 Hawaii State Teacher of the Year
during ceremonies held during the Hawaii
State Board of Education meeting, Thursday,
October 7, 2010 in the Castle High School
cafeteria in Kaneohe.
The Hawaii Honda Dealers Association
presented the fourth grade teacher a new
Honda Insight Hybrid (use for a year).
John Shreve, president of the Hawaii
Honda Dealers Association, said the Honda
dealers chose to award a fuel-efficient
hybrid model to call attention to the state’s
Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative. The Honda
dealers, said Shreve, have dedicated
this quarter’s charitable contribution
component of their annual marketing
budget to the State Teacher of the Year
program which includes provision of the
car (use for a year), and an accompanying
media campaign highlighting the value of
exceptional teachers.
The 2011 Hawaii State Teacher of the Year, Kristen Brummel, with key, is shown with
her new Honda Insight Hybrid at ceremonies held at Castle High School. She will
have use of the new Honda for a year, compliments of the Hawaii Honda Dealers
Association. Also shown, L-R, are Charlie King, King Honda (Lihue); Anne Oishi,
Island Honda (Maui); Stan Masamitsu, Tony Honda; Michael Stoebner, Honda
Windward; John Shreve, Pflueger Honda.
“Teachers play a key role in the lives of our
children,” said Shreve of Pflueger Honda.
“They bear the weight and responsibility of
teaching, and apart from parents, are the
main source of knowledge and value for
children.”
“The Hawaii Honda Dealers Association is

teachers.”

Comprehensive Information on the Hawaii Automotive Market
Sponsored by: Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association
Covering Second Quarter 2010
Volume 9, Number 4
FORECAST
State Market Continues Slow Recovery from ‘09 Sales Slump
Increase likely in Fourth Quarter; more improvement predicted for 2011
Below is a compilation of key trends and
developments in the Hawaii new retail
light vehicle market.
Results in the Third Quarter of 2010
As expected, the state new retail
light vehicle market struggled to equal
relatively strong results a year earlier.
Registrations declined 1% in the
Third Quarter of this year, in line with
expectations.
Outlook for the Fourth Quarter
New vehicle sales should improve
compared to a year earlier. Auto Outlook
is predicting a 12% increase.
Forecast for all of this year
The state market is projected to improve
3.2% from 2009 to 2010.
Forecast for 2011
According to our latest forecast, new retail
light vehicle registrations next year will
approach 37,000 units and increase 6%
from this year. Despite the increase, the
market will still be relatively weak based
on historical averages.
Brands on the move
As shown on page 2, Acura, Kia, Hyundai,
and Mercedes have posted big gains in
the state market.
Key factors boosting the market
Record-setting pent up demand, combined
with an aging vehicle fleet should provide
an upward momentum for new vehicle
sales for years to come.
Detroit Three market share
The Detroit Three (i.e., GM, Ford, and
Chrysler) had a 17.5% share of the Hawaii
market so far this year, well below the
38.5% share in the Nation.
Key factors holding the market back
Excessive household debt, a moribund
labor market, and depressed consumer
confidence should lead to a market
recovery that is slow and gradual.
Best selling models
Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Corolla/Matrix,
Honda Civic, Honda CRV, and Toyota
RAV4 were the top five selling models
during the first nine months of this year.
State market results versus U.S.
The Hawaii market has emerged from
the 2008 and 2009 sales slump slower
than the Nation. State year-to-date new
retail light vehicle registrations increased
a slim 0.5% thru September of this year,
compared to 2.4% in the Nation.
Segment Review
Sub Compact Car segment is the largest
in the state, accounting for 19.4% of the
market, nearly three points higher than the
U.S. share.
The graph above shows annual new retail light vehicle
registrations in Hawaii from 2005 thru 2009, and Auto
Outlook’s projections for 2010 and 2011.

of this year versus the same
period a year earlier for the top
15 selling brands in the state.
Six brands had increases of

Explanation of Data
Data presented in Auto Outlook measures
new vehicle registrations in Hawaii. Monthly
recording of registrations occurs when the title
is processed.

Covering Third Quarter 2010
MARKET TRACKER
Pace of Recovery Hits a “Speed Bump” During Summer
Percent change in three month moving average declined in August and September
The graph to the right provides a clear
picture of the general trending direction
of the state new retail light vehicle
market. It shows the year-over-year
percent change in the three month
moving average of new retail light
vehicle registrations. The three month
moving average provides a clearer
picture of the trending direction than
individual monthly registrations, which
can fluctuate due to such factors as
the timing of manufacturer incentive
programs, weather, and vehicle title
processing delays by governmental
agencies. After increasing from April
thru July of this year, the market cooled
off, as it struggled to beat year-earlier
sales which were boosted by the CARs
program. The upward trend in sales
should resume in the Fourth Quarter.
COUNTY SCOREBOARD
Oahu Market Improves 3.1% During First Nine Months of ‘10
Registrations decline in balance of state
The table on the right provides a
summary of each of Hawaii’s four
retail light vehicle markets. The table
is divided into four sections. Market
Summary shows total new retail light
vehicle registrations during the first
nine months of 2009 and 2010 and
the percent change. The second and
third sections show Light Truck and
Detroit Three market share. The
fourth section shows market share
figures for the top 10 selling light
vehicle brands in the state so far this
year. The top rated county in each
category is shaded. The Oahu market
increased 3.1%, with registrations
declining in the other three markets.
Detroit Three market share was
highest in Kauai (25.6%) and lowest
on the Big Island (15.6%).

In a word, we’re driven.
For decades, Matson has supported Hawaii’s auto dealers as both a friend and partner. We have more sailings,
more often, to and from Hawaii than any other carrier. The Hawaii Auto Dealers Association can rely on Matson
to continue its proud tradition of providing regular,
reliable delivery of automobiles and outstanding
service, including up-to-date technology for vehicle
status reporting and tracking. And after 125 years
of service to the islands, members can continue to
count on Matson to deliver.
For more information, call our Customer Support Center at (800) 4-MATSON or visit matson.com.
