American Legion Supports Preston County Students & Programs
Post 56 Establishes Two Endowed Funds
After several meetings with Foundation staff, members of the American Legion Post 56 have
chosen to endow two funds to benefit Preston County students and programs; the Preston High
School American Legion Scholarship Fund and the U.S. Army
JROTC Fund Each fund is carefully tailored to serve the mission of
the Kingwood organization.
The Preston High School American Legion Scholarship Fund will
award an annual scholarship based on a competitive application
process to students of Preston High School for continuing education at
universities, colleges, junior colleges or vocational /technical schools.
To qualify for the award, applicants must be 1) The son or daughter of
a parent (mother or father) who is a Veteran or active duty member of
the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, or
U.S. Air Force or, 2) A student enrolled in the Army Junior ROTC
program who has successfully completed two periods of training at
Preston High School or, 3) a previous recipient of this scholarship who
is eligible to reapply.
The U.S. Army JROTC Fund will provide a grant to help offset travel
and program expenses for the Preston High School JROTC program
expenses.
The membership of American Legion Post 56 are to be commended for their service to their country
and their dedication and service to Preston County. Awards from the new funds will begin in 2014.

Winner of the 2013 Quilt Logo Contest Preston County resident
Dana Rexroad of Bruceton Mills, had this to say about her
design:
“The TCF logo is an inspiring graphic design - perfect for a quilt. The strong
colorful center of my quilt is a symbol of diversity. Different people, groups
and interests come together to weave the core of TCF.
“The strong
The work and impact of that core rays out powerfully in all directions. Bright outer squares shade
through the spectrum, representing a rainbow of bright new days for our communities.
Some fabrics in my quilt come from the collection of famous West
Virginia quilter Elizabeth Granholm. After her passing,
Elizabeth's family shared her fabric "stash" so that other quilters
could carry on her legacy. Quilts, and TCF, are about heritage,
family, warmth, sharing, and paying it all forward to the next
generation.”

Bash. The Bash is a school fair for returning students, their families and
other community members. Prizes for various games and other giveaways
will be school supplies.
Town of Hambleton needed financial help to reconstitute a community
board that is responsible for a historic church. The city hopes to help
restore the church to place it on the Local Historic Register and make it
available for community use.
Davis Health System Foundation sponsored a street fair in Elkins, WV
over the Fourth of July holiday. The fair included games, local foods and
musical entertainment. It was hosted between the American Mountain
Theater and the Davis Memorial Hospital’s Women’s Health Care facility.
Potomac Highlands Food and Farm Initiative used its grant funds to
purchase a broadfork and sod-cutter to help individuals put in new gardens.
Both tools are useful in removing ground cover or grass and loosening soil
to place a garden. If you would like to borrow these tools for your project
please contact Kimmy Clements at (304) 259-5388. SUMMER

Let’s Talk Rocks
Corridor H is creeping closer and closer to both ends of the county. Opinions vary
but on one point everyone can agree - a LOT of rocks have been unearthed; and
those rocks represent opportunities and challenges.
It has some of us talking about the possibility of a Tucker County Boulder Park, a
community enhancement project that could create an aesthetically pleasing visual,
provide a unique recreational activity for residents and
visitors, and serve as the focal point for a philanthropic
effort to support Tucker County Emergency Services.
The proposal has generated strong support and lively
discussions. Much has to happen to get the project off the
ground but if you’d like to learn more, call 304-259-5008 or
email [email protected].

Super Storm Sandy left too many in the dark
for too long. Emergency responders were
spread thin as they tried to address
community needs while trying to keep
generators fueled around the clock. This
spring, the membership of the Davis
Volunteer Fire Department made a big
commitment to the community by purchasing
a 48KW Natural Gas Generac Generator.
The generator was installed by Brad Phillips
of Phillips Electronics and according to
Callaway “It will allow responders to serve
the community more efficiently and
effectively.” Tucker Community Foundation
facilitated the grant.

The 2013 Uncle Sam’s Birthday Party was the usual resounding
success. Approximately 280 people were present for a fine dinner
and drawing that netted a certain Band of Brothers, Scott Hinkle,
Doug Milam, Ken Rothschild, and Mike Martin, a total $7,750. The
Band of Brothers were the lucky bidders of the auction ticket which
allowed them to both split the first drawing prize of $2,750, which
they shared with Cary Reed, and win the full $5,000 in the second
chance drawing.
There were additional cash prizes totaling $2,550, various door
prizes, as well as three additional raffle prizes. The additional raffle
prizes consisted of : Greenbrier Get-away Package that included a
three night stay at the Greenbrier Resort and funds for food or
other activities, the Across the Mountain State Package included
tours, golf passes, hotel stays, and other items from around the
Mountain State celebrating its 150st birthday, and the Totally
