Letter to the editor
From Around The Globe…
Federal health experts have declared a small victory
against a fatal and untreatable virus, saying canine
rabies has disappeared from the United States.
May the Cutest
Kitten Win!
While dogs may still become infected from raccoons,
skunks or bats, they will not catch dog-specific rabies
from another dog, the Atlanta-based U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention said.
“We don’t want to misconstrue that rabies has been
eliminated -- dog rabies virus has been,” CDC rabies
expert Dr. Charles Rupprecht.
Rabies evolves to match the animals it infects, and
the strain most specific to dogs has not been seen
anywhere in the United States since 2004, Rupprecht said.
While the incubation period for rabies is as long as
six years in humans, it is only six months in a dog.
Kittenwar.com, the web site that pits two
photographs of adorable kittens against
each other and asks the viewer to vote
for the winner. If you have lots of time
to spare or are looking for a good
laugh visit www.kittenwar.com and let
the games begin!
“No matter how much cats
fight, there always seems to
be plenty of kittens.”
- Abraham Lincoln
DNA Testing for Mutts
What to know what breeds of dog your mixed-breed is? DNA testing can find out.
There are a couple of laboratories that will analyze saliva from your dog and can ascertain from what breeds he or she
is descended from. And it looks pretty cheap, about $65.00.
My dog Harvey is a mutt that no one seems to know what he is. I could probably make use of this.
These labs have assembled DNA maps from several AKC breeds. By analyzing your dog’s DNA, they can tell you if he’s
part beagle, or part dachshund, or part golden retriever, or who knows what. Visit the websites below to find out more.

DOGGY DAYCARE & BOARDING
U.S. free of canine
rabies virus!
Hi Animal Print,
My name is Lindsay,my husband and I have 5 dogs,
2 great danes, 2 dobies, 1 min pin. A few days ago
we experienced a very scary situation our 2 year
old male dane “Sly” bloated!!!!! We had just arrived home and picked him up at the kennel an
hour later he could not get comfortable he started
retching and trying to throw up, we rushed him in
to Bay State Emergency Services!! They performed
surgery and saved him!!!!!!
While we were away we met a couple with a great
dane puppy, who have had many danes, they stressed
watch for bloat, restlessness, throwing up with no
production! We also went into a doggie store who's
owners dog had died a week before from bloat. Before speaking to these people I knew about bloat but
it was in the back of my mind, I just think people
with higher at risk dogs need to know more about
bloat make sure it is on their minds at all times!!!!!!!!
If I hadn’t met that couple and having them stress
to me about it who knows what would have happened! Sly is now resting comfortably at home with
his loving brothers and sisters!!!!
Thank you- Lindsay and Sly

Cats are not as independent as you think. Adopting a cat
means making a lifelong commitment to love and care. Your
cat needs you just as much as your dog. Cats just show it differently. Cats are attuned to their environment and may prefer being
left home alone for short periods rather than getting uprooted to
places unknown to them. But cats need company – yours and sometimes that of other cats and animals. And cats need the protection
that only human companionship can offer. If a fire or other disaster
occurs and cats are trapped in an unoccupied home, they may perish. Illnesses progress quickly in cats’ tiny bodies, so someone who
knows their normal behavior and state of health should be around to
watch them regularly and take them to the veterinarian immediately
if needed.
2
A cat should not be given tuna fish for humans – no matter
what kitty tells you. Canned and fresh tuna fish contain an
enzyme that destroys vitamin B1 (thiamine). Cats who eat
tuna frequently can develop a vitamin B1 deficiency, resulting in
neurological symptoms like dilated eyes, loss of equilibrium, seizures,
and death if this vitamin is not replaced. The scientific name of this
disease is polioencephlomalacia.
Feeding cats tuna regularly over the long term can cause their bodies
to rob its stores of Vitamin E, leading to a very painful condition
called steatitis. Finally, recent reports about the mercury levels found
in tuna have raised some concerns about anyone eating tuna.
Tuna-flavored catfood is okay. A tiny bit of canned tuna as a rare
treat is okay, and even may stimulate the appetite of a cat who has
been sick and seems reluctant to start eating again. But when in
doubt, leave it out.
Other foods that can be toxic to cats include spinach, onion, and
members of the onion family such as scallion, leek, and garlic.
Before giving cats a treat from the dinner table, consider whether it
contains any of these ingredients.

Cats can be trained, even to do tricks. Positive reinforcement,
such as clicker-training, can help you teach your cat to come
when called, sit, stay, and fetch, among other tricks. Positive
reinforcement also helps cats learn to walk on a harness and leash; in
#7, you’ll learn how that can save your cat’s life.
Some cat parents have reported success in teaching cats their names
by simply repeating a cat’s name over and over while feeding the cat.
Mealtime is a positive association!
4
Cats who are not getting along, a kitty acting scared, or a
kitty urinating outside the litterbox, may get help from a
surprising source: flowers! Well, not really flowers, but flower
essences. Since flower essences are simply water containing a tiny
amount of liquid in which a flower has soaked, there are no undesirable side effects. For cats, humans, and other species, the right flower
essences will resonate with the being who ingests
them and may help improve heir condition.
Many cat parents also have seen great results from Feliway, a liquid form of
the friendly pheromone cats exude when they rub their faces against objects
or other critters (including us). Applying Feliway spray to selected areas of a
cat’s houshold may keep him or her from wanting to urinate or spray those
spots – just make sure not to spray it near the litterbox! Comfort Zone for Cats
dispenses Feliway into a home via a small plug-in diffuser. It tends to calm nervous cats and is recommended for use at times when cats typically feel stressed,
such as when their humans are at work or away from home. Feliway has no
effect on humans. Natural food markets carry Bach flower remedies, applicable
to people and cats. Flower remedies formulated especially for cats as well as
Feliway are available at many animal supply stores.
5
Cats absorb substances through their paw pads and they lick their paws
frequently. So the products used to clean floors, countertops, and other
surfaces may be toxic to kitty. A safe (and cheap) choice for cleaning is
a solution of 1⁄2 cup cider vinegar in 2 gallons of water. Anything stronger may
make kitties sick. If a product says, “Keep out of reach of children,” or warns
not to inhale or ingest, it’s definitely not safe for cats. Certain types of houseplants are poisonous to cats as well, including lilies.
6
Cats need to scratch. Cats scratch in order to leave their scent on their
territory, discard claw sheaths, and effectively stretch their spines and
joints. Regular scratching helps maintain kitties’ spine, joint, and
muscle health. Remember, declawing is a very invasive procedure of amputating cats’ “fingers” at the first joint. It takes a long time to heal, and results in
lifelong discomfort for some cats.
Carefully trimming cats’ claws and providing toys and attractive surfaces for
them to scratch will save your furniture. Animal care workers can teach you
how to trim your cat’s claws so that it is safe for you and your cat. Trimming
cats’ claws is relatively easy with high-quality, very sharp clippers designed just
for that job. Another option is a product such as Soft Paws, which you or your
cat’s veterinarian can apply to your cat’s claws. Soft Paws are blunt-tipped fake
nails that slip right over a cat’s claws and come in a variety of attractive colors.
7
Keeping your cats indoors greatly enhances – and saves – cats’ lives. The
average life span of an indoor-outdoor cat is about 4 years. Indoor-only
cats average about 14 years. Indoor cats are protected from disease and
dangers including contagious diseases as well as cars and larger predators.
Difficult as it is to imagine, cruel humans may harm cats for “fun.” Outdoor
cats have been found with rubber bands around their necks, air gun slugs or

BB pellets lodged in them, and worse. Heat, cold, and other extreme
weather conditions can kill cats. Further, keeping cats indoors also
protects other cats: a pussycat in the home may become an aggressive
tiger when outdoors.
Still, cats enjoy fresh air and outdoor exercise. There are simple, safe
solutions besides letting them roam. Cats can be harness-and-leash
trained in a matter of weeks – it does take some patience and willingness on their humans’ part, but the rewards of walking your cat
include outdoor adventure for kitty, extra bonding time for you and
your cat, and a chance for you to step out of the rat race and move at
a cat’s pace.
It’s easy and cheap to construct a cat pen out of wood and rolls of
metal cage. You can install cat doors so your cat can access the pen
from your home. Just remember to cover the top of the pen with
metal cage as well as the sides! Pre-constructed cat pens are available
through most pet stores and magazines, as well as the Internet.

When kitty eliminates (pees) outside the litterbox, there
are several possible reasons besides naughtiness. First, it is
important to make sure your cat has had regular veterinary
checkups. Some physical problems may cause a cat to feel pain while
eliminating, and may stimulate them to go outside the litterbox
to avoid the pain. Second, is the litter being scooped and changed
frequently enough? You probably wouldn’t use a filthy bathroom, and
your fastidious cat likely won’t either. Third, the litter itself may be
irritating to the cat’s paws or lungs. Always use scent-free litter; the
chemicals in scented litter are not good for you or for Kitty. Consider
a clay-based, dust-free litter, or litter made of recycled newsprint. If
the problem persists, consult cat behaviorists, such as www.catsinternational.org.
10
As long as we’re on the subject, litterboxes shouldn’t
stink. That’s right. If a litterbox stinks, it needs scooping or changing and cleaning. Like toilets, litterboxes
must be “flushed” after each use and cleaned out regularly. It’s not
fair to ask kitty to use a dirty bathroom, and kitty probably won’t
want to. Further, dirty litterboxes can harbor bacteria and possibly
cause illness. The easiest litter to use is clumping litter – just be sure
to buy unscented. Use a litter scoop to remove solid lumps once or
more daily. Clean out the entire box every week or two. In multiple
cat households, a suggested formula is to maintain one litterbox for
each cat in the household, plus one extra. More or fewer boxes may
be needed depending on how well your cats share.

A neutered male cat or spayed female cat will live a longer,
healthier, happier life than one not sterilized. According to
Linda Squires, VMD: “Spaying and neutering pets is important to their health for many reasons, including prevention of uterine
infection, breast cancer, and testicular tumors, as well as diseases associated with wandering behavior. But one of the aspects that disturbs
me the most about animals reproducing unchecked is that so many
of the offspring are unwanted, without homes, and end up being
euthanized. In our society today, euthanasia is the #1 cause of death
(among pets), and most occurs due to overpopulation.”
Most veterinarians recommend spaying female kittens before they
would normally have their first estrus or “heat.”

Mickey a striking neutered male was found
abandoned this past spring. He has a lap kitty
disposition and would make a wonderful addition to any household with or without other
pets. His fur is very long and must have Maine
Coon ancestry. He is UTD on rabies and distemper, was found negative for both FEL and FIV.
Ellie is one of Emma’s 5 kittens born on June
12th. She is all black like her siblings Tiny Tim,
Samantha and Tasha, but she also has a white
patch on her belly. She’s the one in the bottom
right hand corner of the picture of her and 3
of her siblings. She is so sweet and a very affectionate little girl who loves to be held.
Bee is a black and white, short-haired female
with a great personality. She is very friendly and
playful and loves to be around people. She also
loves to play with other cats and kittens and
purrs immediately when picked up.
Tomkins is a seven week old black and white
short haired male. He is one of Annabelle’s
kittens. He has several round black patches on
his sides which have earned him the name “Cow
Kitty.” Tomkins appears to be wearing a black
velvet hood over his head. Besides his distinctive
markings, Tomkins is sweet, energetic and fun.

Holt is a rescue from the local kill shelter. We really aren’t sure about his heritage, our best guess
is red heeler/cattle dog. We only know for sure
that he is a beautiful dog. He is now between
6-7 months old. He is about 30 lbs, and isn’t
expected to get any bigger. He is a loving pup,
with tons of affection to show to his family.
This gorgeous girl is Stella. She is approximately 6 months old. She and her sister Della were
found abandoned at the local water treatment
plant. How anyone could just dump them, we
haven’t a clue! They are beautiful girls and very
loving, friendly and happy. They are wonderful
dogs and deserve a chance at a happy life.
Meet Anya! She is a terrier/hound mix that is
between 10-12 weeks old. Her mom is a 35 lb
dog, and Dad was a sneaky next door neighbor
mutt! She is a lovely little girl. She’s up to date
on her shots. We’re currently working on housebreaking, using puppy pads and newspapers.
My name is Dusty and I love people! I am a
beagle/coonhound mix puppy, around 14 weeks
old, and still very small, as you can see by my
picture. I love to be played with, but it does take
me a little bit of time to get used to people.I am
told I am very sweet and that I am going to make
someone very happy when they adopt me.

Approx 8 yrs, Storm was surrendered to the
shelter with his “brother” Toby. Would like to
keep these 2 boys together, if possible. Recommend no toddlers and no other pets. Storm
takes a little while to warm up to people, but
will soon be wagging his tail and “smiling”. He
is a happy and friendly boy, mellow and quiet.
Approx 3 yrs, Riley is a handsome boy. He is very
nervous and unsure of new people and needs a
quiet, adult home with someone who has the
time, patience, understanding and love to help
Riley feel safe and secure. We recommend no
young children - as they would be too active for
him. He may also be ok w/another dog.
I’m Luna, I was brought here with Alexander
and he is my hero here. I find comfort snuggled
against him. I didn’t think that when my family
thought I was just such a cute kitten, that
would mean at 3 years of age, I would be left at
a shelter. Why does that happen? I am scared
here, but with a gentle hand I melt.
Toby is approx 5 yrs, surrendered to the shelter

1. The Great Outdoors
Natural light is your best friend when photographing
animals. Shoot outside. Always try to avoid using a
direct flash, which often results in no eye detail. An
animal’s eyes are the window to his soul, and you want
to see them. If it is impossible to take a dog outside, try
to find natural light inside—next to a window, etc.
2. Made in the Shade
When shooting outside, avoid harsh, direct sunlight that
washes out detail. Opt instead for shady spots or overcast days. Make sure that you are using a “film” speed
that will allow you to shoot in lower light without things
becoming blurry. Most amateur cameras have intuitive
“ISO” or “ASA” settings which automatically adjust to
changing light conditions, but you can also set these
manually. Very simply, the higher the ISO number, the
faster the “speed” and therefore the less light you need.
Experiment with what works best with your camera.

temporarily on the food you are holding. If you have
someone helping you, get them to hold the treat over
your head while you’re shooting in order to get a nice
straight-on face shot. If you’re alone, use one hand
to shoot and the other to maneuver the treat and the
dog’s gaze.
5. The Dog Whistler
The idea behind photographing animals is to catch them
in a state of simply being themselves. High-pitched
squeals, whistles, meowing, bird calls or any odd noise
that isn’t threatening often immediately grabs their attention and natural curiosity. Be ready with the camera—these candid moments don’t last long!
6. Practice Does Make Perfect
Some digital cameras can shoot many frames per second, but most are bit slower to respond. In these cases,
you need to know your camera and learn how to
anticipate the fleeting moment you want to capture.
3. Up Close and Personal
Make the shot about the dog, not the wall behind him.
Most cameras have a macro or close-up feature on Hopefully, these tips will help pet lovers everywhere

I believe that dogs are always honest and extremely
soulful, which makes them innately worthy subjects.

Where are you from?
Frankie: Halifax, MA
Lucas: San Juan, Puerto Rico
If you could change one thing
about yourself, what would it be?
Frankie: I’d like to be less lazy.
Lucas: I’d like to be faster so I can catch more squirrels.
What was your most humbling moment?
Frankie: May, 1993. Routes 53 & 139, Pembroke, MA.
That’s all you need to know.
Lucas: Okay. So there was this squirrel, right...
What are your best and worst qualities?
Frankie: I’d say my stubbornness
could qualify for both of those.
Lucas: Best: Chicks dig my scars.
Worst: I don’t catch enough squirrels.
What do you plan on doing
within the next year?
Frankie: I’m hoping to travel a bunch more than normal.
Lucas: To build the perfect squirrel trap.
What’s your idea of the perfect meal?
Frankie: I’m not much of a grand cook, but lately
I’ve been craving a veggie burger & a Hop Devil
from Common Ground in Allston.
Lucas: Okay. So there’s this squirrel, right...
