IMPORTANT EQUIPMENT RENTAL INFORMATION - READ ONI
In preparation for the 1992 running season the GRTC
has purchased new equipment. We anticipate having a new
two sided clock for use at the KODAK AND HILLSIDB 5 MILE
race
on May
9
and
the
RUN
FOR THB
BUS
5K
on
May
10.
Additionally, we have ordered two 10 ft. ladders to
replace our old and warn out finish line system. These
purchases replace 10 and 16 year old equipment.
The
total cost of the new equipment exceeds $2400.00.
We
have purchased this equipment to provide you, the runner,
with an efficient and well organized finish line and
accurate times .
There is nothing worse than recieving
the wrong time as you cross the finish line, or worse
yet, no time at all.
The GRTC maintains and repairs this equipment 8S a
service to our members and area race directors. All our
equipment may be rented and is available on a first corne,
first served basis. Listed below are 1992 rental rates
and number of units availab le:
$75.00 - Overhead Clock (2 )
$40.00 - Chronomix (3)
$50.00 - Operator (1)
GRTC managed races do not pay the equipment rental
fees.
We do howeve r, p ay the operator(s) fee.
This
equipment is not available without an operator . To
reserve equipment please call Paul Richards at 381-7978.
In response to a newsletter add about two years ago
we were f o rtunate to have Paul Richards step forward and
volunteer his services as equipment coordinator and
operator . Prior to that time, an operator was not
provided with equipment rental. Paul has done an
excellent job of handling rentals and coordinating the
use of timing equipment . He is well worth the money you
pay him. Since Pau l has been accompanying the equipment,
the damage and loss rate has fallen off completely.
However, during the Summer and Fall months our equipment
is used almost weekly and doe s occasionally needs
rep a irs.
Most of our equipment is purchased in
California and must be shipped back to the supplier for
repairs.
A complete listing of GRTC's rental equipment and
fees will be listed in the June newsletter.

Heat saps Bagley chance for OlYIllpics
By Ed Cloos
Another Pete PHtzinger, to represent Greater
Rochester running in the Olympic marathon? It
could have happened , but it wasn't to be for Scott
Bagley in the Olympic Trials Mafdthon April 11 in
Columbus, Ohio.
Fit as be 's ever been in his ru nning career, Scott
wen t to the lin e with a solid base of lOO-mile-plus
training weeks cmd two very fine half marathons
behind him. But the day tu rned .out great for
spectators and terrible for runners with the temperature reaching 70, about the same as the humidity.
"The heal got 10 me; J wasn 'l really prepared for
Bagley recalled two weeks after the face. "Righ l
Irom the start I d idn 't feel good. I never really got
it,"
into it."
Rather than try to stay in the top 10, he found
himself off to
d
slow start. "} kept moving up," he
said, "and at 22 miles I'd gotten up to 15th, but I
was d ehydrated dnd got stomach cramps and the
IdSt fou r were pretty slow."
He finished 18th in 2:2 1:05 in d field in which all
103 starters had either beate n the 2:20 qua lifying
time in the past year or been d member o f a past
Olympic team, O nly 55 finished , with only 17
under 2:20.
With all that fitness, and back in light training
after recovery from the Trials, Scott is preparing for
another Olympic shot. He plans to try for the
10,000 mete r qua lifyi ng time of 28:45 in a meet
May 17 at Northeaste rn University in Boston . Last
year that race prOOuced sub-29 times for the first
eight finishers. Bagley's road best is 29: 12.
That's probably the one shot fo r a spot in the
Olympic track and field trials in mid-June in New
Orleans.
The three men who made the U.s. Olympic team
Me all racers of the highest order. Steve Spence,
this country' s brightest hope in the marathon after
having fin ished a surprising third at the World
C hampionships, ran a controlled, intel ligent race,
winn ing in a time of 2: 12:43. Ed Eyestone, a 1988
O lympian , was second in 2: 12:51 dnd Bob Kernpainen . a medical student who took a year's leave to
train for this, was third in 2: 12:54.
With time bonuses, Spence won $58,000, Eyes·
tone won $48,000 and Kempainen won $38,000.
The O lympians ran three abreast for the last mile
in d owntown Columbus, after waiting patiently
while others surged and picked apart a huge pack
that had gone out in search of a fast time. It was d
mistake, especiall y under energy-sapping condi-
tions. Among the leaders who had all met O lympic
qualifying standards (2: 14), time was not the place was everything.
Keith Brantly (a former Lilac 10K winner) and Bill
Reifsnyder d id the work throug h the race 's crucial
early stages , running together in the lead (rom the
13th to 22nd mile. Ken Martin, who had the fastest
time comi ng into the race, was with the leaders but
dropped out at 17 miles.
Other Lilac winners in the race included Chris
Fox (7 th in 2: 16:40) and Brian Ferrari (48th in
2:32:01).
Bill Weidenbach, whose wife Lisa finished fourth
in three consecutive Marathon Trials races, was
32nd in 2:26:47.

21st time in race
Coyne leads local finishers in Boston
By Ed Cia o.
Dave Coyne, as he has so often in the past. led Rochester
area runners in his 2 151 Boston
Marathon. His 2:33:30 was a
good masters time , b ut many
runners found conditions - cool
at the start and warm la ler in the
race -
not conducive to person -
al-best times.
Dave's wife Elle n fo und conditions as suitable as he did, b reaking three hours in her fourth
Boston (3:59: 29).
The oldest major American
marathon was an internati.onal
race with fe w Americans among
the top fin ishers. That was even
more strikingly the case Ihis year
with the American men's O lym-
pic trials face only a week earHe r.
As a result, the leading American finisher was masters runner
Doug Kurtis of Northville, Mich.
But his 19th·place finish in
2: 17:03 was hard ly worth dis·
missing. A 40-year-old systems
analyst for Ford Motor Co. , Kurtis finis hed his 125th marathon
and 6 4th under 2:20. Only Kjell·
Erik Stahl of Sweden has run
more marathons that fast, 68.
"When you look at me ," sa.id
Kurtis, who runs in as many as a
dozen marathons a. year and
once ran two a week apart. "you
can throw out all the rules. " He
was better than all the younger
American runners, but he was
only second-best master.
The men 's masters division
winner was the amazing Frenchman , Pierre Levisse, 40, who so
convincingly won the world mas·
ters eros-country championship
over Charlie McMullen last
month in Boston. He said he
would come back to Boston to
bette r his fin ishing time oj
2: 16:46. " I was very disappoint·
ed," said Levisse, who said he is
aiming for a time of 2: 12. He
finished in 2: 14:38 in New York
in 1988. Coyne had n't gotten his
fin ish card as we went to press
and masters results weren't available on race d ay because of
some p roblem with the Boston
Athletic Association compu ter.
Dave has been running Boston since 1969 (when he was 17
but said he was 18 because that's

bette r and left he r on the hills.
She finished in 2:22:43, as he
recalls it.
He previously had run
2:2 1:13 , but his best overall fi n·
ish was with a slower time in
1986. That's the year top run·
ne rs were p rotesting the lack of
prize money and stayed away. A
2:24 and three or four seconds

The men's race was dominated b y Kenyans, fo r whom it was a

of Kenya to the 20-mile mark.
Then [kangaa faded, One
mile later, Merende dropped
back, leaving Hussein' striding
strongly accompanied only by
Ihe Ihrong Ihal cheered from Ihe
sides of Ihe J'Odd. [kangaa fin·
ished fourth and Merende sixth.
Hussein, a Kenyan who won
his third Boston Marathon and
second in a row, ran 2: 18:14.
By fimshing sixth. in 2: 12:23,
Merende was named to the Kenyan Olympic team along with
Hussein and Douglas Wakiihuri,
who qualified by running lasl
month in Japan .
Among the women, overwhelming favorite Wanda Panfil
bum a comforlable lead by
charging Ihrough Ihe firsl 16
miles in the identical time she
posled lasl year. bul suddenly
faded.
Working olf Ihe lale 5:52 and
5:54 miles of wobbling Panfil.
Russian Olga Markova, 23,
barged into the lead and won in
2:23:43,
Both winning times were personal bests and the second-best
times recorded in the 26.2-mile
race, thai goes from the farmlands outside Boston to the Back
Bay section of the city. The race
records are Rob de Castella's
2:07:51 in 1986 and Joan Benoit
Samuelson's 2:22:43 in 1983.
It was the fourth marathon for
Markova. Her first resulted in a
course-record 2:37:06 victory at
the Marine Corps Marathon in
Washinglon in 1990. She Ihen
did a 2:33:25 in Los Angeles lasl
year. Ihen a 2:28: 18. good for
second place in New York last
lall.
The $60,000 winners gol may
be her only reward because she
faces the distinct possibility that
she will be held off Ihe Olympic
team of the combined former
Soviet states because she chose
to run in Boston, not seven weeks
earlier in Los Angeles at a mara·
thon the Commonwealth's athletic federation had designated
as the Olympic trial roce_
There, Madina Biktagirova 01
Belarus, Radmi lia Barangu!ova
of Russia and Valentina Yegorova of Russia finis hed first, second and fourth in times considerably slower than Markova 's.
"Now that I have this time. I
hope maybe they will select me,"
Markova said. "But I have no
assurances that 1 would be chosen. Maybe, but I don't know. "
The winners said their times,
many of them record-breaking ,
could have been even faster.
"I wanted to sort of leave
something for next year," said
lim Knaub, the winner of the
wheelchair division, who broke
the world record but said he was
leaning on the "binders," or
brdkes, through part of the IdSt
stretch. "Year to year, we sort of
li ve on the bonuses these things
generate. "
Competitors get bonus money
for every record they can break.
Knaub, who received $10,000
extra for his world best time of
I :26:28, said he wanted to set a
record he could break again
next year.

Rats Clinic
On March 29th, the RATS held the secand annual
triathlon clinic at Churchville Chili High School.
Based upon the number of participants, and the
enthusiasm shown, this clinic was equally as
successfully as the fITst. For a $5 donation, 25 people
received individual instruction in the three oi
disciplines. Individuals were video-taped as they
The videos were then replayed and the techniques
analyzed. Bob Terbush was as busy as ever with his
wrenches, adjusting and fitting bikes for one and all.
Mike Colucci and Mike Baxter were requiring the
participants to get tired before videoing, so that their
typical race fonn could be closely analyzed. It was an
excellent opportunity for beginning tri/bi athletes to
take advantage of some experience in the club, and for
some of the more seasoned RATS to fine tune their
techniques. Hopefully this will become an annual
event.
The Furman Challenge
We meet at Dennis' to ride and they say,
A Furman Challenge is on the agenda for today.
What is the Furman Challenge, you may ask.
It's fun, some hills, and riding fast
We stan out slow so the legs can wann,
But before too long, we're riding up a stOrm.
Out Five Mile Line and down Plank Road,
And the light is green, so you better go.
Now we're at Harris and the TOad is TOlling,
The ride is getting tougher and the sweat is
flowing .
My lungs stan ta burn and my legs are getting
tight,
but I have ta wark hard ar they'll be out af sight.
Now we're at Furman and the hill we attack.
The first one ta the top will be king af the pack.
It's not the Beast, or it's niece,
but I work hard to get over in one piece.
Glad that's over, but no time for jest,
there's more riding to do to catch up with the rest.
Now we're at Klem and the ride's almost over.
I like this TOad because it has a good shoulder.
We're finished now, and I've had a chance to rest.
What a great ride, when do we do it next?

A Facial !!
Having Read Bob Epstein's rebuttal to an editorial
by Ivan Lennon (was that a rebuttal or a pin sticking),
I must take issue. Here is a little history for anyone
who may have missed the past few newsletters. There
has been some debate as to whether drafting (wheel
sucking) should be legalized at biathlons and
triathlons since some bike courses tend to clog up on a
loop course or an unchallenging (flat) one. Ivan felt ·
drafting should not be legalized since the biathlons

and triathlons are an individual event. I agree. Race
directors need to have more imaginative road courses
with some interesting terrain (hills) to break up the
mob scene, plus waves.
Bob's argument was that this is ridiculous and
when caught with, or catching a group of other riders,
the most important thing is to know how to ride in a
pack (Wha!??). He then goes on to talk about a race
two years ago in Holley and even named the riders he
rode with. That race specifically stated they would
have marshalls on the course and drafting would not
be tolerated. Since most of the peop le mentioned were
new to the spon, and there were no signs of a draft
marshall , they can be excused. But two years and
many races later anyone who still feels that it is ok to
do it hasn't learned what the span is all about.
As for Bob's information on how to ride in a pack,
lets save it for where it belongs - in a cycling road
race. Remember, real men don't draft

A call to start a competitive GRTe open team
The following letter from Tracy Fox could be the start of em open competitive team for GRTC. Although
open team competition was one of the founding reasons for the Greater Rochester Track Club, only seniors
dnd masters teams have been active in recent yeaTS. An open team could be d way for recent college
graduates to contin ue serious competition.

Mr. Cloos,
The idea of having an "open" men 1rack/field team is some1hing I believe GRTC has
needed since I moved to Rochester about 2 years ago . This is one of several things
GRTe's board of directors wants from me to obtain sponsorship. The team that travels
with me, please understand, will compete with Division-Jlevel athletes. Please note, if no
one responds, I will be a one man 1eam. The article below is what I would like published
in GRTC's next several news letter.
Hello fe llow athletes, GRTC has needed an "open" men traveling track/field team
for a long time, and there is no better time to establish one than now, the Olympic
year. Who knows you may reach an Olympic Trial qualifying mark. My name is
Tracy Fox, and I will be the coord inator, and an athlete on the team.
I was born and raised in 81. Louis, MO. I moved to Rochester, NY almost two years
ago, after graduating with an electrical engineering degree from Southern Illinois
University at Edwardsville(SIUE). I have worked for the Eastman Kodak Company,
since I moved to Rochester. The fi rst time I ever ran on an organized track/field
team was during my senior year in high school. From high school, I joined SlUE's
track/field team. I eventually gave up track/field in college, because classes
demanded 100% of my time. Upon graduating , I knew I could continue compe ting
again. That is when I joined GRTC, and began competing again in the 200 and
400 meter dashes.
I am looking to coordinate a team of post-high school athletes interested in
competing during the winter, spring, and summer months in track/field. The team
will compete mainly with the best collegiate athletes around the United States and
Canada. Expect overnight visits, and to spend some money. Money wi ll be the
factor that determines the destination of competition for the team. The team,
including myself, has to be able to compete on a collegiate Division- I level. We wi ll
be Rochesters very own elite athletes. The team 's philosophy will be to function in
unity, win, and have lots of fun . Anyone interested in joining this team will have to
tryout, no exceptions. To tryout contact me, Tracy Fox, at 227-7669 atter 9 p.m.
on weekdays.

Committee present:
Ml.ml. Decker , Ross Rl.,der,
Ll.sa, Bower, ~ob
DiGiacco . Directors present : Jane raculll., George Tl.llson, Rl.ck
Iovine, Mark Harrison, Walt Check, Ed Cloos.
AGENDA :
Minutes from March Meeting; Treasurer's Report; JV County
Meet; GRTC/Hilton Marathon '92 ; winter Youth Track Summary;
Freezeroo SununarY i Request for GRTC Funds; Purchase of Cl ock;
Updates on Corporate Challenge , Five & Dine; Winter Clinic Summary;
Road Race Seminar; Club Finances; Purchase of Fax Machine ;
Midtown Tennis Agreement .
The meet i ng minutes from the March 1992 meeting were reviewed and
accepted as submitted. There was no Treasurer's report due to the
absence of Juli Nelson.
Mimi Decker reported for Rick Guido t hat the JV County Meet will
be May 15th.
GRTC will pay the $200 rental fee for the track
facility.
Wa l t Check submitted a GRTC/Hilton Marathon budget for 1992. There
wi ll be an eight mi l e run in addition to the marathon and relay.
walt would like a separate race coordinator/director for that run .
Pl ans are in the works for a pasta dinner the night before the
races i Hilton has offered to help with the dinner.
Rick Iov i ne reported on the winter Youth Track Meets at Roberts
Wes l eyan .
He was pleased with the youth emphasis and feels that
the goal of having meets where kids could have fun in a non competitive track experience was realized. Rick reported that many
young athletes improved over the course of the meets .
For next
year, more volunteers are needed, and entry fees will probab l y need
to be raised as the meets l ost money this year .
Rick also felt
that ribbons awarded to the youth should have been just for
participating rather than emphasizing finishing place. Plans for
summer deve l opmental activities are now being made for the GRTC
youth program .
Mi mi brought up two requests for GRTC funds from Charlie McMullen
and Tracy Fox .
On March 20th, Charlie p l aced 2nd in the World
Cross Country Championships in the Master's Division in Boston.
Since he represented GRTC, the Board approved $100 toward Charlie's
expenses. Tracy Fox is in the process of forming a touring team;
his request for funds was held for future board action. The GRTC
By-Laws were reviewed regarding allocation of monies to GRTC
athletes .
(THE BY- LAWS READ AS FOLLOWS:
"When a member receives
money from the club to go to an event, the following rules must be
followed: 1) The member must represent GRTC. 2) The member should
report to the c l ub within a reasonable time the approximate or
exact place and time or distance .
3) It is suggested that the
member(s) write a thank you note to the secretary .

allocates funds based on the following: needs, current club funds,
projected expenses, projected income, how long person(s) has been
a club member, performance of person(s).")
Mimi discussed the need for a new overhead clock.
The hoard had
previously approved the expenditure but GRTC timing coordinator
Paul Richards says that the existing clocks are in working order.
Since there were problems with them at several races last year, a
new clock will be purchased. The approximate cost of a new clock
with tripod is $1700 and will be purchased from RaceClock for this
year. Ross Rider offered to build a case for the new clock .
'.
Jane Iaculli reported on the Chemical Corporate Challenge race
plans .
So far, 550 packets went out to area companies and there
has been a good response so far.
There may be as many as 1500
participants this year.
Jane also reported on the first "Five &
Dine" social run, for which seven runners turned out. She termed
it a success, and hopes that word will spread and more will come
out next time (every Wednesday night at 6:15 at Mendon Ponds Beach
parking lot).
Rick Iovine discussed the GRTC agreement with Mid-Town Tennis .
Mid-Town personnel approved of the agreement with minor changes,
which will be worked out with them.
Lisa Bower reported on the winter Clinics. The last clinic on Back
Care by Dr. Leslie Lange was not well attended (only seven people
showed up).
Plans for next year include having two clinics in
January and two in February, with a prominent keynote speaker to
kick off the program and boost interest/attendance.
George Tillson reported on the Road Race Management Seminar, which
was attended by 20 race directors. He felt that there should have
been a better turnout, since road race directors could benefit from
the information which was presented. George mailed out packets to
17 race directors who could not attend.
Ross suggested that it might benefit GRTC to acknowledge the many
helpful volunteers at an annual party or banquet. Many ideas were
brought up; this may be able to be done at another GRTC event.
The next Board of Directors meeting is planned for Tuesday, May
12th . Minutes submitted by Lisa Bower, 4/92 .
