have learned, we have grown, we have changed, and
we have grown some more! This newsletter will take
you on a trip down memory lane. Hundreds of people,
including all of you, have been a part of CPL’s growth.
You all have brought your love, dedication, and passion
to CPL and we have learned and benefitted from
each and every one of you! Looking back, I wish I had
seen over the years but, in the moment, I didn’t realize
that those small changes would turn into very big
milestones! When this publication hits your mailbox,
we’ll have hunkered down to start year 26.
CPL’s future is bright and exciting, but we face challenges. Our facility is in critical need of an expansion to improve our safety
and accommodate the needs of our staff, volunteers, and graduates. Many past graduates are returning for successor dogs
(and we are thrilled!), but with each successor placement, one of our new applicants gets pushed further back on the waiting
list. That makes raising and training enough puppies for the program even more challenging. Our breeding program is helping
to ensure the dogs in our program are physically, behaviorally, and temperamentally solid, BUT we still need those incredibly
devoted volunteers – new puppy homes. We have overcome many challenges in the past and I have no doubt we will find a
solution to each of the current challenges.
We want the world to see the life-changing work that happens here and we are always working hard to share our mission, but
we need your help to do that! Interact on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Participate on our Online Community. Read this
publication to learn the many other ways that you can help and don’t forget to share with your friends and family.
Thank you for 25 amazing years. It may have been my initial dream to start this organization, but it has been your love, passion,
and dedication that has grown and developed CPL into the world class service dog organization that it is today!

The 45 acre property consisted of a farm house that was not
handicapped accessible, a pole building with a goat living in it, and
very large fields. Our first capital campaign allowed us to purchase
the property, renovate the farmhouse into our current office space,
renovate the goat barn into a temporary training facility (knowing
we would outgrow it and need more suitable facilities before long),
and build our kennel. Designing and building the kennel was a
huge project. We toured kennels across the country to develop
our design. We asked kennel managers to tell us the “one thing
they’d change” about their kennels, and then we built ours. What

Our waiting lists grew. Our programs expanded to include Cardiac Alert Dogs, Courthouse and Residential Companion Dogs and
Diabetes Alert Dogs. We grew and before we knew it, we placed dogs in over 45 states. We placed over 600 teams. Our annual
operating budget grew to $1 million and later to $1.5 million. We grew to receive national media attention. We grew with the new technology:

Throughout all the growth, we had a strategic plan guiding our work, our Core Values
directing our actions, and a careful intention to grow but not lose the “heart” that embodies
Canine Partners for Life. CPL is not an organization focused on producing large numbers,
but instead on quality, follow up, service delivery, training, and addressing peoples’ most
challenging needs. Our membership and accreditation with Assistance Dogs International

(ADI) has helped us remain a leader in this industry.
Behind the scenes, unwavering and always available all 25 years, was my family. Robert
(my husband), Erik (my son) who grew up knowing nothing but CPL, George and Barbara
Burkhardt (my parents), Billy and Francis (mom and pop) Sullivan (my mother and father
in-law), Dan (my brother) and his family, Robert’s brothers and sisters (especially Melvin!),

and the extended family beyond that. When times were tough, money was short, decisions were
hard to make, and things seemed impossible ... these were the people who picked me up, reminded
me to allow my faith to guide me, occasionally kicked me in the pants, and cheered me on.
But who did I learn from most? I learned from the 953 dogs who have blessed my life by coming
through this program. I learned from the 653 people who I have been honored to place Canine
Partners for Life service or companion dogs with. Most importantly, after I was diagnosed with
Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome 19 years ago, it was my personal service dogs

CPL is not Darlene. But I had a vision which was shared by all of you. I will ultimately be just a very small part of CPL’s history. I’m just
the lucky gal who was blessed to be surrounded by all of you. With your support, I was able to guide this wonderful organization to
meet its mission, to follow its Core Values, to have the discipline to follow a strategic plan, to commit to excellence, and to never be scared to
change or grow, but to do it thoughtfully, with much input, and with intention. I’m glad I could share the first 25 years of our history with you.
The future? Whatever it holds, may it be focused on bringing empowerment to people with disabilities. May it help them live a better
quality of life; a life which is exciting, has dreams and has no barriers. May they never feel scared or alone again. May they wake up each
day envisioning the potential of the day, and may their Canine Partner for Life make that all possible for them! n

On June 13, 2015, Canine Partners for Life said good bye to a
beloved friend, advocate, and supporter. Charles Minor Barringer
(Minor) and his wife, Molly, joined the CPL family in 1991 when they
made their first gift. The organization was only two years old.

On April 3, 2015, Canine Partners for Life lost a member of our family. Lee Fertig was a long-time volunteer, supporter,
and advocate of the CPL mission.
“Dad was a very strong, passionate man and had so much love to share. Dogs and the CPL mission held a very
special place in his heart. Dad was a strong advocate for CPL and no job was too small for him. He loved puppy
homing with his family, whelping litters of puppies in their home, helping at information tables, and just sharing the CPL mission. Everyone in
Kennett Square, PA (our home town) knew dad raised puppies and would look forward to seeing the puppies during his business rounds. I can
still picture him out in public, wearing a CPL shirt and baseball cap, teaching the world about service dogs.
Each year, he looked forward to the Open House where he would park cars, give tours in the kennel, and
share the CPL mission. He loved attending the Wilmington Blue Rocks baseball game during Team Training
and socializing with the new graduates. It was extra special when one of the puppies we raised was graduating.

REFLECTIONS
My very first team training was at Darlene’s house. When I visit puppies at Darlene’s house
now, I can’t help but wonder how our class fit into the den of her home. That team training
was the fall class of 1997. My parents and I started volunteering the summer after I got my
first service dog; it was the best way we could think of to thank CPL for the wonderful gift
they’d given me. I have had three wonderful partners and am now working with my fourth
fabulous partner. All my service dogs have been from CPL, and there are two reasons for
this. One, the tremendous amount of support that the CPL trainers and staff give to the
teams and the support the recipients give to each other. I consider Canine Partners for
Life my extended family. Two, the staff at CPL have known me a long time and sometimes
know me better than I know myself (which is a good thing). They taught and continue to
teach me to be the best dog mom and service dog partner I can be.

The memories are endless, but most reflect on dogs that have been raised in the Prison
Puppy Raising Program. Some of the most heartwarming moments for me are when I see
dogs from the Prison Puppy Raising Program at graduation. I walk up front to congratulate
the recipient, their dog sees me, and they start wagging from head to tail! It brings happy
tears to my eyes every time. It’s a wonderful feeling being a part of the dog’s upbringing
and training, and then seeing them work with their recipient and change that person’s life.
It’s hard to really explain other than it makes my heart feel really, really good!

ago by a friend who knew I loved dogs.
I immediately fell in love with this unique
organization. I was overwhelmed when
I saw what dogs can do for individuals
with mobility issues and seizures.

mission and am in awe of Darlene and
what she has created.

come a long way since then, not just in size,
but also the quality and consistency of the
dogs and the training program in general.

I have been with CPL since it was a thought in Darlene’s mind. Her dad, George, was the first President of the Board of Directors – many are the times
that Darlene has wished for his guidance since his death 4 1/2 years ago! He found the property that currently houses CPL, founded the harness
shop, did every imaginable job, and always listened and gave advice when asked.
I have puppy homed, supported Darlene, and cooked the food for the Team Training dinners, graduations, and open house. I accompanied Darlene
when she did the prison at MCIW and one of my favorite memories is taking new puppies there and watching the inmates react to them!

the beginning. We started as volunteers 25 years ago when we saw
an article in the Kennett Paper. The article described how Darlene
Sullivan was starting a service dog organization and needed puppy
homes. We have supported the CPL program in all areas ever since.
CPL’s mission is one we have always been proud to be a part of.
It has been amazing to watch CPL grow and take its place among
the finest service dog organizations in the country. This is the type
of organization that makes a difference in people’s lives every day.
It makes one feel proud to know in some small way, you have
helped a person live life to the fullest.

I was “adopted” into the CPL family in August of 1995 as a trainer.
A special memory comes from that first Team Training class. A
young woman came through the door with her parents announcing
that, “she can no longer walk and will be doing everything from her
wheelchair.” Three weeks later she walked out of graduation with her
service dog and never looked back! CPL afforded me the opportunity
to combine my love of dogs and the importance of serving others.
Frequently, CPL is the last stop for people with disabilities who haven’t
been able to find help anywhere else. They have been to every doctor
and specialist and have been given up on. CPL changes their lives in
profound ways. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of an organization like
that? I’m thankful for CPL and my CPL family. I am proud to continue
to volunteer still today, even if from 800 miles away in GA. But I truly
miss you all more than you’ll EVER know!

which other dogs stayed clear of. So, we went home without Pepe. Upon talking with Melissa, I found out
the reason she didn’t know if she wanted him was because he wasn’t a LAB. You see, her friend had a
service dog and he was a Lab. Melissa and I had a heart-to-heart discussion and I explained to her the
most important thing was not what he was on the outside, but what he was on the inside. Two weeks
later, we were back on the road on our way to CPL. That is when the love affair started. Pepe worshipped
the ground Melissa’s wheelchair rolled over. And for her, it was the first time she was responsible for
something, or should I say someone. It seems it has all come full circle as I started working at Canine
Partners for Life as Administrative Assistant in July. I love talking with the families and relating all of the
positive and fun experiences we have had with Pepe, Melissa and the CPL family.

25 years ago, one dog and one strong-willed young lady is
where CPL started and look at what it is today. Since Darlene is
my sister-in-law, I naturally got “volunteered” at some point and
have not regretted a single minute of it. I have gotten to meet some
wonderful people I would have never met if not for my “required”
trips from NC to PA. Hearing from the recipients on how receiving
a service dog has improved their quality of life and given them
freedom to do things that were all but impossible before, is what
makes all these trips “required.” It is special to see where it all
started in a cramped area in Darlene and Robert’s house to
where it is today and the plans for the future.

CPL has always been like a family to me and it has allowed me
to grow up in a drastically different way than most people. When
I was younger my summers weren’t spent at the beach, but
rather in a converted horse barn where we held team training.
Our sunroom and living room were where the organization took
shape. I got to travel the country, watching my mother teach
people about service dogs and what they could do. I witnessed
people regain their independence as they realized they no longer
had to rely on other people to do everything for them. Canine
Partners isn’t just an organization; it’s part of my blood. I was
raised by the organization and all of the people who have
dedicated their lives to it over the years.

In 1989, Bob and I had only one dog and I was not into training and
showing at that time, but I loved dogs. We lived in Wilmington then.
I heard about CPL and thought it was a wonderful idea. Then I met
Darlene and Solla. I was so impressed with what Solla could do, and
what Darlene was doing all by herself. She was the trainer, marketer,
educator, and fundraiser. She was amazing!
I learned so much about service dogs being the first CPL volunteer.
I brushed, walked, and played with the dogs, who at that time were
chosen from the shelter. I remember Jessie, Chance, and Timmy. I took
them to stores and the mall. Our first graduating class had one recipient.
Darlene and I had fun making the first CPL video showing how a service
dog can make a huge difference in someone’s life. What Darlene has
accomplished is incredible. I am thrilled when I see how CPL has grown,
how many volunteers there are now, and how many people’s lives are
enriched by these special dogs.

SERVICE DOG TEAMS

Service Dogs enhance the lives of their partners 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. CPL service dogs go through a rigorous, two-year training
program. In addition to being socialized and learning basic obedience, the dogs are taught multiple service skills to assist individuals with disabilities.
During their second year of training, the dogs are paired with a human partner. At that time, each dog’s training is tailored to meet the needs of their
future partner. CPL service dogs can provide balance and support to people who have difficulty walking, retrieve dropped items, turn light switches
on/off, pay cashiers, alert people to seizures, blood pressure drops causing unconsciousness and hypoglycemic episodes associated with diabetes,
and the list of tasks doesn’t end there. CPL’s lifetime follow-up program ensures that each team continues to successfully work together for the
lifetime of the partnership, making independence a reality.

own – the emotional effect of having a dog has
also been life changing. Having a service dog
has made me more independent, confident, and
outgoing. I used to let fear of falling or needing
help stop me from living my life, but now I am not
afraid to go places, do fun things by myself, and
go after my goals. And the best part is – I have a
constant, loyal, and insanely adorable companion
by my side at all times.
