featured on these pages have been carefully developed by the manufacturer for the thousands of individuals who need natural light for everyday tasks,

fabrics, wadding and batting
Wadding and Batting
Batting is the filling placed between two pieces of fabric to form the quilt. Barnyarns stocks three different types of batting,
manufactured from Cotton, Polyester and wool. The Batts are commonly processed using one of two different techniques,
bonding or needle punch and in some cases both.
Bonded batts usually use an acrylic based resin which is sprayed on during manufacture to bond the fibres together to stabilize
and prevent bearding. Bearding is when the fibres work their way through to the surface of quilt and is more of a problem with
polyester and wool batts. Cotton batts tend not to beard according to the manufacturer. Needle punched batts literally use
hundreds of needles to stabilize the batt by combining the fibres together to form a strong bond. This technique tends to bond
the fibres exceedingly well inside the batt but leaves the outer fibre looser and more prone to bearding. The needle punched
batts tend to be denser and have little loft compared to the bonded batts.
The type of batting you choose is really down to you, cotton will shrink slightly (which may be the desired effect) and polyester
will not, making it better suited towards frequent washing.
Heirloom Wool Batting
Heirloom Premium Cotton Batting
Hobbs Heirloom washable batt is one of the finest wool battings
available. It is 100% wool, fully washable with a resin bond to resist
bearding. It is warm, lightweight and breathes well, with the Lanolin
from the wool keeping your hands nice and soft during use.
Excellent for hand or machine quilting on light fabrics, best to pre-test
on dark fabrics.
Our most popular batting is the Heirloom Premium by Hobbs. It is an
80% cotton 20% polyester blend that is lightly needle punched and
lightly resin bonded. It shrinks less than other cotton battings and
uniquely, has a little extra loft. The batting can be used straight out of
the package and can shrink up to a maximum of 3.5% to give that
‘antique puckered’ look. If puckering is not required, leave to soak for
10 minutes without agitating, spin dry then air dry. Excellent for hand or
machine quilting on light or dark fabrics. quilters can quilt up to 4” apart

Polydown Polyester Batting
This resin bonded, fine denier siliconised polyester makes a very soft
and drapable batting that is wonderful to hand or machine quilt.
Polydown is easier to quilt and more washable than other battings,
thus eliciting comments from quilters like ‘ Polydown is like quilting
through butter’. Low loft, non-allergenic and resistant to bearding,
quilters can quilt up to 6” apart with this super product.
