Pink Pumpkins
The Pink Pumpkin Patch
Foundation was created in 2012
to aid in the fight against breast
cancer. It is comprised of pumpkin
growers across America committed
to giving a percentage of proceeds
from every pink pumpkin sold
to the foundation, which in turn
will award grants to breast cancer
research organizations.
The Tall Corn FFA chapter
has seeds for this project to help
raise money for Mrs. Hannan in
her fight with breast cancer. Pink
pumpkin seeds are available in the
Superintendent’s front office.
In the fall, we want you
to donate a pumpkin back to
the FFA. The FFA will make a
donation based on the weight of
each pumpkin. Also, in the fall
we will be selling these pumpkins
to raise money for breast cancer
awareness, and to support Mrs.
Hannan.

Laurens Women’s Club Donates to 5th Grade Class for Des
Moines Trip
Jackie Stelter, Laurens Women’s Club
Vice-President, presented a $250
check to Mason Link, a member of the
Laurens-Marathon Fifth Grade Class.
This money was used for their annual
field trip to Des Moines, where the
students toured the Iowa State Capitol
Building. Class members also visited the
Hy-Vee Hall of Pride and the Science
Center of Iowa. The group took their
field trip to Des Moines on Thursday,
May 16.

IDPH Offers Free Nicotine Replacement Patches and Gum
During June
During the entire month of June, The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is offering four weeks of free nicotine
replacement therapy (NRT) in the form of patches and gum to Iowa smokers who choose to make a quit attempt using
Quitline Iowa. Quitline Iowa offers tobacco cessation coaching services over the telephone or the Internet, 24 hours a day.
"Data suggests the majority of smokers want to quit. We are excited to offer them extra support to increase the likelihood
they quit successfully," said IDPH Director, Dr. Mariannette Miller-Meeks. "Smart, efficient budgeting is allowing us to
provide this support for the first time in years. Historically, Quitline Iowa has experienced large increases in call volume
when free NRT is provided."Research has shown that quitting smoking at any age offers health benefits.”
Quitline Iowa focuses on the individual, with the realization everyone is unique and their quit plan should be, too.
Research shows phone coaching is twice as effective as smokers trying to quit on their own. While Internet-based coaching
is too new to thoroughly evaluate, IDPH Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Division Director Meghan O'Brien says the
preliminary data is promising.
"It is important to arm tobacco users who want to quit with all the tools we can, including Web options for those who
may be uncomfortable with telephone coaching. Preliminary data shows Web-based coaching is attracting young smokers
who want to quit. Most smokers make multiple quit attempts before successfully breaking their addiction to nicotine, so the
younger they decide to quit using tobacco, the better."
Current Iowa health care costs associated with tobacco exceed $1 billion. For more information about Quitline Iowa,
visit www.quitlineiowa.org<http://www.quitlineiowa.org/> or call 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

June 5, 2013
Well, our summer is off to a fun
start! The kids asked so nicely if we
could have a LegoMania day. How
could we refuse those smiles and
polite words? We scheduled it for
Friday – and naturally the weather
was sunny and beautiful! Lots of our
Lego fans showed up as soon as the
library opened so they could play for
a while before they went swimming.
But as soon as the pool opened, the
sound of sifting Legos was pretty
much done. Can’t say that I blame
them – we have to take advantage
of these perfect weather days! There
will be plenty more days to play with
the Legos this summer.
We have lots of fun in store next
week! Monday evening is the Danny
Santos Concert that we’ve been
looking forward to. The Texas singer/
songwriter will play his unique mix
of country/folk tinged with bluegrass
and the blues. Whether you saw him
when he appeared at the Library in
2009 or if you missed that show,
please join us at 7 pm on Monday,
June 10 for an enjoyable evening.
Then Tuesday at 1:30 our
Summer Reading Program will start

week we will dig into dinosaurs.

Western Iowa Robot Festival
Attracts 13 Teams to Test
Robotics Technology
Pocahontas County
4-H Agriculture and
Conservation Day
Some thirteen teams of 4-10th grade youth will challenge their
engineering and computer programming skills competing in an
upcoming “Western Iowa Robotics Mini-Challenge Festival!”
Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at the Pocahontas Expo Center. The
event is sponsored by the ISU Extension and Outreach 4-H
Youth Development Program and the Northwest Iowa STEM
Hub. The 6 hour technology contest will reach 38 youth from
9 different communities representing Cherokee, Pocahontas,
Sac, Webster and Woodbury counties.
“The Robotics mini-challenge experience is designed to
build skills in engineering, science, technology and math,“
said ISU Extension 4-H Youth Field Specialist, Carol Ehlers.
Participants will add to basic robot design and write programs
to accomplish tasks that are scored based on completion, time
on task, usefulness, originality and technical merit.
"We know the importance of science and technology
is growing," says Carol Ehlers, 4-H Youth Development
Specialist, with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
"This is another example of ISU Extension and Outreach
County 4-H Programs partnering with the Governor’s Scaleup STEM grant to equip youth with the skills they need to
enter the 21st-century workplace."
The western Iowa robotics event is a part of an Iowa 4-H
STEM Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics
initiative. The ISU Extension and Outreach 4-H initiative
is sponsored by local ISU Extension County Councils, ISU
Program for Women in Science and Engineering, and ISU
Engineering College.
4th grade students from the Pocahontas County Schools
of Laurens-Marathon and Pocahontas Area attended
an educational field trip focusing on Agriculture and
Conservation at the Pocahontas County Fairgrounds in
Pocahontas. The day is made possible by support of the
Pocahontas County ISU Extension & Outreach, Pocahontas
County Conservation, Pocahontas County Farm Bureau,
Pocahontas Area may term class of Mr. Meyer and Mrs.
Jarvis, Pocahontas County Cattlemen, Gamesa Wind Energy,
Farm Safety for Kids, and over 20 volunteers.
Students rotated through eight sessions throughout the
day. Donna Seehusen, Ag in the class room instructor, taught
Gate to Plate. This session taught the children how raw food
products end up on their dinner table. The example that was
used was an apple to apple sauce, and the process that it takes
to get from the farmer, to the factory, to the grocery store,
to the consumer. GPS in agriculture production was taught
by ISU Extension & Outreach Youth Program Specialist
Carol Ehlers. The children had hands on experience using
a GPS hand held system. Pocahontas County Conservation
presented on Water Quality and Bees. Mr. Meyer’s and Mrs.
Jarvis’ May Term Class taught livestock production with
the help of Virgil Behrendsen’s goats, Jerry Weiss’s horse,
and Jason McCartan’s assistance. Becca Johnson, Farm

Safety for Kids, taught the students the
importance of agriculture chemicals
and the importance of staying safe
around household, yard and agriculture
chemicals. Volunteers Deb Ekstrand
and Jeannie Elbert showed the many
ways in which corn and soybeans
are used. Gamesa Wind Energy had
a display on the different tools and
equipment that is used to keep the wind
turbines going. The students had the
opportunity to use their two-way radios,
try on their welding suits and see how
the turbines operate and are kept in
good repair.
A delicious beef burger meal was
provided to all the students and
volunteers by the support of Pocahontas
County Cattlemen.
Carol Ehlers, ISUEO Youth Program Specialist
instructs students on the hand held GPS.
Corinne Peterson, Pocahontas County
Conservation demonstrates on how water
quality is everyone’s responsibility whether you
live in town or on a farm.
Virgil Behrendsen is showing his goat as
the children got a chance to hand feed the
kids.
